    After recently discovering your channel Bentley, its reinvigorated my passion for Rainbows. I just got back into fish keeping over the last year or so after a 8 year hiatus. Coming from Melbourne Australia, seeing your photos from Neil Armstrong reminded me of the ANGFA meetings I use to attend. Both Neil and Barry Crockford were great influences for me. The discussion and mentoring from these gentleman was truly amazing. For us aussies they are apart of rainbowfish history now. They are sadly miss! You guys in the States are so fortunate with the varieties you are able to obtain. Seems ironic that here in Australia we seem to be limited as to what can be obtained comercially.
    Keep up the gr8 content, much appreciated.!!👍🏼

    Thanks for the tips! You aren’t kidding about jumping. I’m asking for a bigger fish tank for my birthday in a couple of weeks and it’s a good thing because it’s either my juvenile Boesemani or juvenile Turquoise rainbow fish jumping in my tank next to me with no lid…. Lol. “s**t.” It’s a 40 breeder. Not enough. It’s my community tank that only has 10 platies and 4 rainbow fish in it right now because I really want to convert that tank into my much bigger betta sorority bc betta fish. They are in a 20 tall.
    I think I’m gonna get a 75 gallon and I’m going to move my fish into that because there’s only two of each right now. I agree with the turquoise rainbow fish coloring remarks because my female turquoise rainbow is amazingly colorful right alongside her male counterpart.

Also how warm do they need to be kept? (All of my other tanks are unheated - goldfish, variatus platys and neo shrimp.) I have the 240g and they do not look tiny in that..the plain boesemani makes it to(so far) about 4 and 3/4 inches..deep body and wide too. In fact when they swim right at you..its like they have human forward set eyes. I do also have a Male hybrid(bought that way) M.trifasciatus and its grown to be the longest of them all at 5+"..yet the male boesemani is numero uno fish,built like a tank. I do have lacustris and New Guinea..I have had losses after over a year of perfection..near two,New fish,non rainbows infected the tank. Why some died when all the rest recovered after treatment is the usual mystery.
    I'm now holding out for those red boese's..but never seen them for sale and LFT says covid has made it lucky for him to get what he gets.
    Rainbows in a large tank? Prefer mid to low water areas of the tank...meaning Giant danio's or other surface fish have room to roam too. I doubt Rainbows care if you add plants..they will eat soft leaved plants...but they do like to swim around tree "roots" usually portrayed by branches stuck in the gravel and to the surface.
    Great fish after 40 years near 50 really,I think they are the best and never had a bit of regret or feeling of "trade them away". Nope, the 240 is home for life.

    Bently, can you talk about what you feed your rainbow fish (Boesemani rainbow and others of similar size)? I know you have other videos on fish food discussion. For example, you discussed using frozen bloodworms as a treat for the rainbow. What other foods do you feed them? The rainbow fish I just got are from two sources: larger ones are 3.5" and smaller ones are 2". Each group has 6 to 10 fish.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  Год назад

      You can certainly keep a mixed school of rainbow fish. You just have to keep in mind that you can't breed within a mixed school because they will crossbreed. So as long as it's purely for enjoyment or a display tank. Yeah, makes your rainbows as much as you want. But if you want to breed some of those rainbows, you'll want to move the breeding pair to a different tank to make sure that no cross breeding occurs.

    @bentletpascoe I'm way behind on RUclips, but true to catch up. This may be too basic for a video, but I would be interested in your opinions of best tankmates for rainbows, obviously bottom dwellers, but I'm thinking tetra type small fish that color may compliment rainbows.

    Aww no mention of Irian Rainbow for the large tanks and Millenium for the 4ft ones? I think they are probably the prettiest with their absolutely charming red and the females also look good especially millenium females wkth their golden colour

    Hi Bentley, great video. I have a community tank that is just over 3ft long, its a 200L, UK size, (53 US gallon) tank. I was thinking of adding some rainbow fish in there and I've shortlisted the praecox rainbowfish and Madagascar rainbowfish, however I didn't see them feature on your list, so I wasn't sure if they are suitable for a community setup. I hope you can help. Thanks 👍

      Those are both great fish, especially at your tank size.

    • @nayanmistry4641
      @nayanmistry4641 3 года назад +1

      @@BentleyPascoe I'm assuming a minimum of 6 of either would be a good starting point. The praecox is just stunning and very easy to keep. The bosemani is the ultimate rainbowfish I want to keep, but the tank is too small and therefore unfair for the wellbeing of the fish

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 года назад +1

      @@nayanmistry4641 Actually if you get one of the creek/stream Boesemani like Aves Creek or Kromsa, they are MUCH smaller and can do quite fine. Same rules as praecox, try for 6+ fish and if you can have 1-2 females per male.

      @@BentleyPascoe thanks a lot, really appreciate your input. I was thinking of having between 7 to 9 rainbowfish. I was thinking about tearing down my 40 breeder and wanted to put puedos and threadfins. Im keeping Africans in there now, so it is over filtered. I want a large school of Corys (15=20) and 15 - 20 of each species oh rainbows, way to much? Also it’s weird, you see photos of threadfins and look amazing, but when I see them the store they look blah. Do you think it’s bad stock or not grown enough, or not happy in their environment. I never kept Rainbows before but with my hard water I think it’s a good option,

      Most of the time those fish are pretty stressed in stores. Get them into a planted tank and in a few days the settle in and color up. I think the numbers are fine given the equipment, just keep those water changes going.

    Hi Bentley, I have a rainbow breeding question. I have some juvenile rainbows that are 2 months old. I thought they were turquoise rainbows but I recently saw red fins on some and came to realize that all 3 types of rainbows in the main tank were spawning in the mops I pulled! There are MacCullochi, Dwarf Neon Rainbows and Turquoise too. I believe I remember a video of you saying that rainbows will not cross breed if there are opposite sex of their kind in the tank. Is that true to your knowledge? The juveniles do not appear to be hybrids and there are both males and females of each kind in the parents' tank. I just wanted a pretty tank of rainbows. It was not my intention to breed them. I put mops in to hopefully breed the rummy nose tetras that are in with the rainbows. This was sort of an accident but it's been a really interesting adventure! Thanks :-)

    • @BentleyPascoe

      They can cross breed without a female. The best way to safely breed is to split them up by species and mop which one you want to breed. Remaining can be in mixed community
