I’m absolutely enthralled by Rainbowfish. Your story mirrors mine. Best fish, hands down. They evoke emotion, and I’m not kidding. Absolute living jewels. Thanks for your raw and candid take.
You probably don't remember me, but you personally responded to my questions about starting a Rainbow tank. Your advice and suggestions proved to be invaluable to me. I have transitioned from cichlids (which I'll always still have) to Rainbows and that has become a favorite part of my fish keeping experience. Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions with all us.
My boss's mother in law lives in PNG, she retired there to do mission work. The boss and one of his boys went there a couple years ago to help build some houses. More of us planned to go back prior to covid, but have since had to gold off. I want to take some extra time to get my stuff together for paperwork so I can collect something while I'm there.
Rainbows sure are stunning, I've just started keeping them, I picked up a group of 5 female bosmani who had already grown out for a good deal, and ive added 3 young males that have started to get those stunning colours, keep up the great content Bentley 👍
Wonderful video! I could feel the joy inside you when you were talking about how you love the Rainbows. They are fantastic fish, that's for sure! I love my guys, as well. The Angelfish video was great, too. I enjoy your species profiles. The only thing i'd have liked to have seen more of are some clips of your fish tanks. But i'm not disappointed. I really learned a lot from you. Thank you bunches., Bentley!
I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about rainbows! I was given 4 mops of eggs from my friend who is really into rainbows. Once they started showing colors I was hooked! Now they are my absolute favorite fish to keep and breed! Thanks for the history too, it was very interesting!
Great video, super informative. I too came across the Aquarium Co-Op tour of Gary Lange’s fish room and that’s what got me hooked. They are so fun to watch. Keep up the good work.
Wow thanks for the surprise shoutout! Very much appreciated. Ever since I was a kid I had been drawn to rainbowfish. I never thought breeding my first Wanamensis in middle school would bring me this deep into the hobby. They're just such a fantastic group of fish with so much variety. Hope to chat more rainbows with you once clubs resume! Loved the video 🤘
The same thing happen to me a year ago. Just got in the hobby at the same time saw the Gary's fish room tour and was hooked. I have 3 type now. Also sold my first batch of Turquoise (156). And the babies had babies found 5 that are on first bites right know. Thanks for the history lesson.
"wonder in your heart" is the perfect phrase to describe how I feel about rainbows. This was fantastic. The history was fascinating, and as always your sincerity and infectious enthusiasm warm my heart. I'll be rewatching this often.
Your videos are SO good!! Thank you! When I watched that aquarium co-op video tour I was like "oh I want that one!, omg and that one is amazing!, I NEED that one!" Basically, what I'm trying to say is, I love Rainbow Fish too! 😄
in my humble opinion I REALLY, really enjoy your channel bcuz when I heard you talking about rainbow fish I feel what is that you're trying to say KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MY FRIEND
We share the same passion for rainbow fish. I’m stoked that you put this video together. I view the slow growth as a test of a true rainbow fish lover. The reward far out weighs the sacrifice in time. Bravo sir!
I’ve heard time and time again about how awesome rainbow fish are by fish tubers. I have been slowly warming up to the idea of getting some. This video has convinced me to start seriously planning how to rearrange my tanks to make room for a nice school of them. “Let’s see, if I get that 40 breeder at Petco then move these rummy noses, ember tetras, guppies and CPD’s in there I will have enough room for them to join the 55 community tank. Yeah, that’s a solid plan!”
The history of these bad boys is mind blowing, beautiful fish that give so much, and with so much respect to the people like Gary lange etc, who collect these jewels in very difficult conditions, wow!!. I didn't think it was possible, but I love my rainbowfish more now!!.. Thankyou Bentley. 💚👌👍
I'm so jealous I'm in the uk, and that you have these weekend conventions just talking about fish and the experience you have aswell as others like Gary, wow! I would be like sponge Bob just absorbing all that information and years of knowledge! Wow maybe someday, now that would be a trip of a lifetime for me😁🤐💚
Bentley you are so on point. I just recently have discovered rainbow fish and hands down are one if not my favorite fish. For many similar reasons I am so intrigued by the bosemani.
Lovely video as always. And I learned more about rainbows. I have a mixed 125 with rainbows, eba, bristlenose, sterbai and sae. And they all swim around together and beg their little hearts out for food
I got hooked on rainbows 12 years ago. I had a community tank with a few of everything. I quickly learned that my favorite fish were the Praecox rainbows. Nothing beats them!
👌🏼Bravo Bentley. Thank you for raising the bar and taking the information available on RUclips for aquarium enthusiasts to another level. I've learnt alot watching your channel and appreciate that most other channels make content for the new comers to maintain views but you've carved out a nice little niche for yourself. Your personality and presentation style is really authentic. Keep up the great work.
So cool - thanks for taking the time to share this insight about the various Rainbowfish genera that single handedly keep me out of the maintenance hassle that is saltwater - there's almost no need with the vast array of beauty that is in the world of Rainbowfish!
Thanks so much for the history of these fish and I have successfully able to breed rainbowfish because of your advice from your videos....i love these Fish so thank you so much for what you are doing
Thanks Bentley for another really interesting video, great job! I was the same, thought they were goofy looking until I saw them in person and suddenly 'got it'. I have just come back from a trip collecting a second lot of Malanda rainbowfish. I have a few fry from my fist group I collected, and I too am excited every time I see a new fish hatch. Man they are slow growing though and tiny. Awesome though.
Thank you Bentley for this excellent video, with history I should know as an Australian and a fish keeper. Very little in Australian media about our smaller fish species, although recently heard there are probably freshwater fish species that have gone extinct without ever being seen by Europeans. Most Aussies would be familiar with the Murray Cod and Barramundi, but ask them if they've heard of Rainbow fish (or Hardy Heads) and they'd give you a blank look.
Enjoyed the Video, just started with Rainbows and really enjoying them! I have some Glossolepis Pseudoincisis and just waiting for them to stop being silver minnows and colour up!
I am planning on getting a 75 gallon tank after we purchase a house this year or next and Rainbow fish are first on my list. I'm definitely going to get some of the smaller varieties in the meantime. I can't wait to get a group of boesemani in that 75.
I have not kept rainbow fish before but am hoping to get a school of praecox in the next few months for my 120g. I have become quite enamored with with them in particular.
A few days ago I was lucky enough to be able to get 20 juvenile praecox. I am already in love with them and having to convince myself not to get another 10 just because I can.
Love my rainbows, I keep and breed Threadfin, black banded and central desert rainbows, but I’m lucky for my breeding stock I go out to a local waterhole and catch them 👍
Very informative - thank you! -just doing research for a project but you make me want to get some! -been thinking about Discus for a few years but idk, I might have to switch! -had no idea rainbow fish could be aquarium fish too - super cool! :D
I got one for my daughter 3 months ago for her bday (i did not want any fish first of all) when we saw it at the store, I couldn't understand why she really liked it... (yes I did the typical "oh its just a silver fish" ) thing. I get home that night and googled the fish, I'm a newbie at all this so I wanted to make sure i knew something about this fish at least lol Well... needless to say... I got MYSELF 5 more rainbows and im getting my new 55 gallon set up asap Lol. They got me bad. Great video as always Bentley.
100% Agreed! They are my favorite fish, too! I have a couple of Bosemani's from Gary Lange lines, Man are they colorful!!! Some Kamaka's , an Irian Red and an Axelrodi.. truly beautiful and fun water puppies! Can you do a video , like this, on Shellies? I'm currently cycling a tank for Multies, so excited!!!!
Most fascinating is how Rainbows occur in Madegascar Tens of thousands of nautical miles from the islands of Indonesia, Paupa New Guinea, or Australia. Also found in Madagascar is the Pom Pom Crab...
If im not mistaken crabs have evolved essentially "from scratch" in lots of completely unrelated places, almost as if nature just defaults to making crabs to scavenge
Dwarf neons colour up so quickly. Thank goodness. I'm tired of waiting for larger rainbows to get colours. I need to put colourful fish in with my rainbows to add colour while others develop and grow.
Incidentally I live in southern Australia and while we have some excellent local fish stores here, rainbow fish of any species are never easy to come by. Compared to my state at least, I suspect you have easier access to many Australian rainbow fish then we do!
Really? I live in Southern Australia as well and there are tons of rainbows readily available in retailers and shops. Red Rainbows, Lake Bhleher rainbows, Lake Kutubu rainbows, lake kurumoi rainbows, Mccullochs rainbows, ornate rainbows, boesmanis rainbows, Doryiti rainbows, Eastern rainbows, Western rainbows, Banded rainbows, black banded rainbows, Murray river rainbows, crimson spotted rainbows, ramu rainbows, splendid rainbows, Parkinson’s rainbows, honey blue eyes, pacific blue eyes, spotted blue eyes, delicate blue eyes, red neon blue eyes, neon blue eyes, fork tail blue eyes, neon rainbowfish, ivantshoffs blue eyes are just some of the many species available in the aquarium trade down here
@George Costanza Nah, they’re extremely popular here, not as much as a standard community tank (tetras, barbs, corydoras) or even cichlids but they are still quite popular with most stores having at least 5 species of rainbows and some having in excess of 20 species in stock at any given time.
@@BentleyPascoe thx for the answer sir. I realy like the boesmani can i keep them in à 240l (66 galon) so yes how many i can keep in this site of tank.
I wish you could make a video comparing rainbow fish vs african cichlids. Both hard water fish, both very colourful. Im on the fence with getting rainbows but when i see a colourful tank of AC the choice isnt so easy
I am going to be setting up a 50 gallon (Length 29.14” Width: 18.75” Height: 16.14”) planted tank with a 30 gallon sump. This seems a bit too small for Boesman, or would the depth of the tank account for the shorter length? Thank you!
It can, swim space matters for them and a smaller growing species, like aves creek can work, I just wouldn't do more that 7. Make sure you give them plenty of swim space with planting/aquascape
I thought, I won't watch this now, I don't have time. Thirty odd minutes later.....😂 Fascinating and worth it to see Gary Lange chest deep in a river. Can't wait for the end of lockdown, to get my first rainbows which will be...........Kamakas!

My next step maybe trying salt any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.
If you want this specifically in a rainbow you would want either the Melanotaenia Kali Tawa or Chilatherina Kali Awalim. Best bet is either Dan's fish or Aquabid. Possibly getgills. Granted all those are US only.
@@BentleyPascoe oh awesome! After watching your video I started doing some research on the Bosemani Rainbows and I'll sure grab a pair or two :-) Thank you Bentley. Keep those AWESOME videos coming!
