  • This 'The Late Show' episode screened in 1993 is dedicated to Alasdair Gray, presented by Tracey McLeod and featuring interviews with Douglas Gifford, Jonathan Coe, Iain Banks, Liz Lochhead, Will Self, Maggie Gee, Kathy Acker and Alasdair Gray himself! Directed by Ian McMillan who has given us permission to share. Screened in 1993 by BBC. A bit of background to the program shared below by Ian,
"As a student I worked in John Smith's bookshop on St. Vincent Street. I'd read Lanark and was a staunch advocate for the book. I hope I made an impact on people who were persuaded to buy it by me.
I moved to London in 1987 to start working in television and was lucky to become a director on The Late Show which was unquestionably the most progressive and dedicated arts programme of its time. I guess 'Ten Tall Tales ...' was about to be published and I asked the editor of the programme if we could do an interview with Alasdair, but as by then I was making the regular full-length 45 minute specials he suggested I turn it into a proper film documentary.
Alasdair was an exceptional person and I cherish the time I spent with him. There's a bit in the film where you can hear me ask him about the 'issue' with Something Leather and when I watched it back this morning (the first time in just over thirty years) I was so struck that I managed to get to do such an interview with someone I revered. It's nice to hear us have an exchange as opposed to just his contributions without my questions.
What struck me most was that having left Glasgow in '87, and very rarely returned in the intervening years, visually a lot of it is my tribute to my home city. Especially the stuff around the Necropolis. There's a real pride in the city there I think, and of course it's a bit of a time capsule too."

Wonderful, thank you for putting this up; I hadn't seen it before. So interesting to hear all the opinions and see 'Snakes and Ladders' and others, on the wall.

The same "Poor Things" that just came our last year as a movie?
Good to know it was a book.

Hello, thanks for this! Is there any chance you could upload Kevin Cameron’s Alasdair at 80 documentary? It no longer seems to be online. It’s the one I like to send to people as an intro to Alasdair

I remember this - maybe a certain Greek director didn’t quite get what Glasgow meant to Alasdair. Such is life .
