I feel your pain, I’ve literally just spent the past two hours trying to save months of work. I’m restoring a 74 VW bus, bodywork and paint are finished and I was about to begin the reassembly. However, over the past few hours, storms have battered the UK and in a last minute switch, they changed course and dumped right on my area. I have been working in one of those temporary tents. Well, the tend is destroyed and the winds blew the bus over its wheel chocks, down the drive and into the garage door. Its dark so I cannot see the damage, so tonight has just been ensuring nothing else is damaged. So right now the VW is now out in the open and chained to my Ford Transit. Gah! Remind me why this is fun!

I was working a full time job during the day and worked weekends at a Firestone dealership. My buddy asked me to paint his car (I'd done about 10 already). I was tired and we couldn't really start until after the Firestone closed so it was late. Set up plastic sheets to make a booth, then it's 10 pm when I'm ready to go. I forget to add the thinner. It just spit out BB's all over the hood - little blobs of paint, like a sheet of sand paper. We had to wait hours for it to dry so we could sand it down and start over. Crap happens.

Mobile SMART repair work, inside, outside, in the wet, in the dry, in -2c in 35c, in the dark, out the back of car dealerships, in the best paint booths, in the wind, the snow, next silicone loving valeters, in people’s driveways and all of it in the UK, a damp cold island. You have to become very Fox Mulder and Trust No one or anything when it come to paintwork.

I paint them right in the backyard around 10:00 here in Florida before the wind or bugs come out, no booth. I use a Fuji turbine unit for 4 years now with a 1.3 . I paint houses for a living, and run a few of my sprayers on a generator because my sprayers can pop certain breakers in many of my customers homes. Those (CAFCI) breakers pop on my sprayers all the time, I definitely bring my generator with me on those jobs.

I keep my inflation blower plugged into a battery backup power bank just in case a tripper breaks or someone disconnects my extension. It gives an audible sound if i lose power, and over an hour of backup to figure it out. It also has a monitoring app that lets me know if i step away during curing. I think it's essential with inflatable, especially if you run a 3 blower setup that's drawing lots of amps. Ecoflow Drlta 2 has worked great for me, but there are lots of other comparable units for under $500 (a lot cheaper than losing a job).

Well, it was good experience. Experience is what you get, when you don't get what you wanted. But at least we all have learned that the inflation blower needs to be on a circuit separate from the sprayer and other stuff. We know, however, that the hood will look awesome by the end of the next video.

Had a similar experience but instead it was just a windy day and the wind blew over the top Down enough to touch the panels while clear was drying, and this was on a Kandy job on some motorcycle fairings 🤦🏽‍♂️

Was surprised to see you using the C cap for clear! I have a 5 stage and use the A or B. Maybe the extra fan makes a big difference in the 6 stage. Turbine on same circuit as 2 blowers😮 ohhhh bad idea as you found out😮

Man, I was clear coating a molded carbon fiber part in an inflatable paint booth on my porch, and I setup the part too close to the back wall of the booth. The last coat of clear went on amazing, and I left it to flash for a while. When I came back into the booth, I realized the wind had picked up, and pushed the booth wall into the part! If left a similar result on the part, and on my sanity!

you would think the booth manufacture would have built a one-way valve in it to stop this kind of thing from happening. At least if you blow a fuse it will stay inflated for a little while. That could have cost thousands of dollars in damages if a whole car was in there and almost finished.

  • @nickforder8202
    @nickforder8202 20 дней назад

Or you could use one of those fold-away pagodas with an Aluminium frame. It would be strong enough to hold up the spray booth if the fan goes down again, and it should cover a complete car.

That's a "should have had 2 fans on that booth moment. 1 for flow, 1 for inflation and the both operating in 2 separate circuits. That's painful, but it happens and it's easily fixed. That 4:1 clear looks pretty good all things considered. I've used Tamco clears and colors for years, but I may be trying out that Eastwood for some random projects.

For the people suggesting PVC frames...keep in mind, these booths are also generally not waterproof. So a fast-developing storm can also ruin your paint job. High winds can also push the sides into your car if you're doing an entire car. Make sure you pick a VERY good weather day.

I’ve had ‘dramas’ happen, and in this case and many others, I’d have wiped it off with thinners straight away. It’s messy but you can fix it straight away and be painting again within the hour. You remove the problem, instead of trying to fix it and risk reactions etc. Of course it depends on the size of the job, but on a bonnet off the car, I’d have chose to wipe it off. Thinners, a clean isopon spreader and some clean cloth.

In fact, just last weekend I had to paint a door outside (yes I know but it was that kinda car), strangely it was perfect, 20 mins later the wind had blown the paper into it and stuck, wiped it off in 15mins, and maybe 15 mins after that I was basecoating, and oddly…. The job required no buffing when done… but that was just luck

It's heartbreaking when sh*t like that happens.
I have my Harbor Freight 10x20 canopy, so when I want to paint, I drape plastic down the sides for a makeshift spray booth.
Not perfect, but it works for me.
I like the suggestions here to make a PVC pipe frame, just in case.
