Do I need to be pressing shift click when the closest rock is depleted?

Simply spam left-click until your inventory is full.
Before you start using the method, it is important to swap-left-click walk-here on the depleted rock as demonstrated at 0:12 in the video. In order to access this settings menu, you can shift-right-click on a depleted rock.

Great question. There is no mouse movement while mining, and the player can leverage this to reduce attention to the client. For example, using a wireless keyboard/mouse would enable the player to briefly leave their computer while still gaining xp.
