Mortal Kombat 2, which version is better? SNES or Sega Genesis? Might not be what you expected..

- Back in the 90’s the console wars were epic! When Mortal Kombat 2 came out expectations were high, SNES dropped the ball on MK1, how did they handle MK2? Was the Sega Genesis ready to go up against the SNES’s full might and hardware capabilities? Well let’s break it down and find out what version really was better in this comparison review video, MK2 SNES VS SEGA GENESIS!
Enjoy! Игры
Me in the 90s: These are exactly the same game
Me now: These are completely different games
Right? Lol
This is not even a competition, SNES wins hands down
Negative!
The SNES was near perfect arcade conversion. The Genesis was grainy and blury af but the SNES version was nearly identical to the arcade
Who ever says that the genesis version is better, what the hell is the matter with you? Im a sega fanboy, and even i know the snes blows it out of the water.
.Better graphics
.Actual shadows
.Way more voice work
.Colors
.Sound effects
Ill argue mk3 is better on the sega. But mk2 had so much more potential.
Excellent comment I respect this 🫡
Me personally, I always thought growing up that Mortal Kombat was better on Sega Genesis and Street Fighter was better on SNES.
Agreed.
SF2 was good on Genesis too, if you had a 6 button controller. Super SF2 however had awful music on genesis.
SNES is the better version, despite the slowdown at times.
100%. No one should have a legitimate argument against this. 🍻
There's no slow down
There is no slow down
lol, I was scratching my head on the “slow down” part, haha. I’m just agreeing with SNES version is better in every single way. 🍻🤣
Shouldnt the snes port be better automatically because the snes was several years newer than the genesis?
SNES is better in every way possible. The speed thing was never an issue honestly since the arcade wasn't exactly fast. But yeah graphics, sound, gameplay and the voice clips were all better on snes with MK2 for sure. Nice video.
Snes version, enough said, better graphics and sound
SNES is easily the superior version. In literally every aspect. They really put the effort in after the MK 1 shitshow.
SNES is better
When these came out the SNES version was considered the best arcade to home port ever released.
I remember when SFII Turbo was released for the SNES, the editors for Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine gave it straight 10s. Howevr, I do agree that the developers practically took the arcade rom and squeezed it into a 16MB cart.
SNES by far. Even Boon himself acknowledged the SNES version being the better version.
❤🔥"Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. When I was dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this" - The Notorious B.I.G. 🎮
All respect to Biggie 👊🏼
The only thing about the SNES version is that it misses that awesome fatality "moaning" sound with the logo fading onto the screen. The Genesis got that one down pretty well minus the speech.
I still remember the blood code for Sega G.. A,B,A,C,A,B,B.. 😂 but now I can't remember a cellphone number for the life of me!
Got the same issue with my phone number, yet still remember the Aladdin skip levels code A, B, B, A, A, B, B, A 🤣
1. Arcade MKII
2. SNES MKII
End of the conversation.
Pd: now a comparation of N64 MKT and PS1 MKT, that was awesome.
SNES, no contest. I had both and all my friends agreed.
👊🏼
Snes wins hands down.
"muffled" is the word you were looking for to describe the sound on the SNES version.
"The Sega Genesis version does it have the same exploits as in the arcade?" which version of the arcade? the 1.01 version? yes it does.
It only muffle if you play it through the crappy RF video signal, you had to play it via Composite to get clearer stereo sound. Many people back then who own a Super NES were previous owner of the NES and they kept using the same RF coaxial video signal to play their system which I had to say thanks to Nintendo for keeping that as compatible as they could between generation of console since people don't had to worry about buying another video cable to use but reusing the RF video cable only add terrible sounds and audio to the game. Play it through Composite or RGB and the audio sounds fantastic. This applies to the NES as well, there are buzzing noise and muffle sounds when playing with RF video signal on NES, use AV Composite and it makes a world of difference plus it give it better pictures too.
@@VOAN LOL..... sorry, the RF cable is not the culprit for the muffled sound on the SNEs, but the low sampling rate of the PCM samples in order to save ROM memory on the cartridges which were expensive to produce back then, the SPC700 sound chip is very dependant of ROM space since it works as a "wavetable" ADPCM tracker, it doesn't generate audio by itself, it only plays pre sampled instruments stored in the cartridge memory to generate music and FX sounds, almost like the Neogeo but way more limited (32k/s max sample rate) almost 90% of commercial SNEs games used 8-10 k/s sample rate.
Slowdown is a no go for me ..Nintendo loses
In this case the SNES version is better literally in every aspect.
SNES version was better. In MK1 I thought SNES version was better also it just didn’t have the blood.
Grew up on the SNES version. Love it. Even still to this day, I play it a couple times a week. The sounds and colors of the Genesis are terrible, but the people who only played that version growing up might be fond of it.
Mk1 sega was better. Mk2 snes
SNES version is SUPERIOR close to the arcade even Ed Boon said it was better than Genesis version
Ed Boon also let Mythologies slide so lol kidding, SNES is better in my opinion as well 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion
Speaking about Subzero Mythologies.
When are you playing it again?
😂 😂 😂
FINISH IT!
@@davidbermudez7704 it’s coming *tonight!
*never
@@BushyStallion
Thanks 😂 😂 😂
Snes version, but i like the genesis version as well
I respect this. Both GREAT versions 👊🏼
Consolewars has a funny comparison video of these two versions. SNES is even better than the Sega32X version. Genesis stands no chance, Sega32X loses to SNES in some aspects and it takes Sega Saturn to destroy SNES. Saturn has slowdown and some really odd sounds but graphics wise the true 32-bit version finally gains the upper hand over the SNES.
MK2 for SNES is perhaps the greatest SNES port of all time.
The Sega sounds kinda reminds me a little bit more of the arcade sounds. I feel like super nes kinda lacks on sound. Like for SF2 the sound effects and music are kinda weird too(super nes)
snes version
The Genesis version left too much of the sound out for the sake of making the 32X version seem different.
The 32x version was way closer to the arcade than either of these two...
Sega left a lot out because the genesis didn’t have the memory
The ONLY good thing about the Genesis version was the name of the characters inside the health bars. That's it.
I remember playing the Genesis version as a kid AFTER playing the SNES version for a few months. It totally felt like a severe downgrade in every aspect.
Bro there was more then just that how you can't see the genesis was it own style and has more stuff in the game nobody knows about but I do
SEGA 32X is the best version!
The SNES version looked so good back then. Still does
I always have a special enjoyment from Genesis audio since it uses FM Synthesis to organically create audio through waveform manipulation as opposed to the audio sampling on SNES. I always had SNES growing up, so I have to give the edge to the grittiness and hard hitting sound that MK2 had on SNES, but I do like the Genesis synth.
Really dig this comparison video going back and forth showing them. Really lets the viewer see and hear for themselves the differences while giving your own opinion. Can't wait for Vanilla MK3 comparison! 💜👊🏻💚
Appreciate it bro, it’s fun playing through the two again, MK3 should be interesting as the Genesis version is very similar to the SNES this time around.
Mk1 for genesis was my fav, cuz of funky sound and fatalities, and mk2 was incredible for snes no question.
Nice video. SNES all day
Excellent 👊🏼
I miss playing games with friends in the 90s.
MK2 on Snes is objectively FAR superior and it's not even close.
Anybody saying Genesis, is on nostalgic crack!
Snes MK2 is closest to the Arcade version in almost every way: Accurate music, colors, graphics, all stages, sound FX, etc.
Only thing Genesis got right was the names in the healthbars.
Facts. Even Sega 32x too.
Thank you, whichever game is closer to how the arcade game looks, since that was the game was originally for, that's the better version. Regardless if its super nes or genesis. MK1 was better on genesis then snes because they had the fatatlities, even though the super nes version was closer to the arcade system.
There is a 32x hacked rom that has the arcade music in the correct order. 32X has all the voices like SNES and sound effects sound close to the arcade. When the arcade music is substituted for the Genesis style FM synthesis music, it's night and day.
@robkrasinski6217 oh yeah I got that too. Same as mortal kombat 1 for arcade edition genesis.
Great video! I remember noticing the shadows in the snes version as a kid too!
I’m gonna be honest I play this mortal kombat games on the Super Nintendo and sega when I was a kid and I could never beat it at that time not even the arcade version so I moved forward for the other mortal kombat like the 3D era version and I play the heck out of those games all the way to Mk11 and let me tell you I bought the ps2 to go back to play trilogy and mk2 from the midway arcade treasure and I thank you @Darryl that I watched your first video of how to beat mk2 arcade version and I practiced and now I can beat it with no problem and now I’m doing RUclips to play mortal kombat again thank you so much brother for bringing us back to this again and feel like the 80s and 90s much love to you man ❤👊🏼
I appreciate the comment dude, I feel like a lot of people have jumped back into the classics and if they watch my stuff and I have any part in that whatsoever then I am beyond thankful. So know that I appreciate you my friend and this comment because those games bring so many of us so much joy, and there’s nothing better than sharing that with others 👊🏼
Everyone knew hands down Mortal Kombat (original) was better on Genesis just because of the blood code.
You're absolutely right..
OG MK was terrible on both systems. I had both systems back in the day. I rented the SNES version and the graphics and sound were great but the gameplay was off. I wound up buying the Genesis version. The gameplay was better but IMO the soundtrack and sound effects sounded terrible on the FM synthesis chip and the graphics were meh. MK II on SNES got it all right - graphics, sound, gameplay, probably the pinnacle of 16 bit MK conversions.
Genesis version had way better responsiveness. The SNES version was really not that bad, but the input lag was unbearable.
Great video idea and well made
Thanks Jeremy I appreciate it 👊🏼
Hey Darryl... Is there a way you can hook us up with info on the SNES mk2 version 1.0 and 1.1... And whatever Else there is... Somehow? I've always wondered what's going on
Genesis 32x was the best version end of decision SNES can't touch the 32x
Good morning darryl! Snes version is the better one. I played both. I am a sega growing up, but i give it to snes for mk2😊
Oh for sure, that’s an unbiased response and I appreciate it 🙏🏽
SNES and it isn't even close. Better color, better sound, better music, better control. The grimy MIDI audio on the Genesis is ear-piercingly bad. The graphics look like slightly better NES graphics. The missing speech and terrible battle sounds don't help.
I respect that, good comment my friend 👊🏼
No one noticed how male characters have female grunts when doing sweeps and jumping on SNES?
That said, SNES is better, but I have a thing for Genesis sound chip too!
U guys were snot nosed kids when these came out. I had both as an 19 year old. Genesis control and game play was far superior to SNES. I played in local competitions in my city. GENESIS all the way.
I won local MK2 competitions as a snot nosed kid all while being nursed on the teet
@@KDawgg-zh6qi I concede..lol. Kudos!
No matter how you look at this the SNES version is far superior. I guess someone can prefer genesis if that’s the version you’re used playing/listening to but to me genesis just can’t compete with the snes version.
Control is everything...sega
Good review. I have only ever played the MAME rom arcade one on my pc as well as in the arcades.
MAME and Arcade emulated versions are far superior 👊🏼
Good review man. I had the snes version I used to play this so much. Have you done the 32x video review on mk2?
Not a review but I’ve done a couple play throughs on 32X
When will you do a comparison of MK 2 Snes vs MK 2 32x? Just asking cuz I like how you do the reviews.
I appreciate the question, I’ll drop that video soon 👊🏼
Genesis had a piss poor port. Other games on Genesis looked awesome, MKII was not one of them
Darryl, I love your content! I’ve been subscribed for months and really enjoyed the video you did about the “older kid” mentor thing. Real quick, I had a Genesis and I played the crap out of it but I played the SNES version at my cousin’s house and even rented the console and played it a few times. Hands down, the SNES is the superior version. Easy. But you were super fair about it. You didn’t dog on the Genesis and put it down. Plus, we have to remember that the Genesis was a late 80’s console and that synth was huge back then! That Yamaha chip can really put out great sound! Its purpose originally was to sound like the OG Sega arcade games, which it did. So it did its job, it just struggled some as gaming grew and advanced.
I also noticed that terms like “graphics” and “the computer” are normal language for us but they’re rarely used these days! Part of the fun was looking through magazines and comparing those graphics between systems and shouting angrily, “I blocked that! The computer is so cheap!” 😄 That console gen/war was truly an awesome time to be a gamer!
SNes, the best MK II
Dang bro. MK2 on the genesis was my first game ever. Maybe it’s my nostalgia, but I remember it looking a lot better on Genesis than it did! Crazy. SNES looks far superior. Cheers 🤙🏽
I think the nostalgia definitely plays a role in how we remember things 👊🏼
I can't figure out why Probe made the choices it did with the music. The Kombat Tomb uses the music from The Tower (though the original Kombat Tomb track appears to be missing, so if they chose to sacrifice that track for cartridge space concerns, a substitution makes sense). The Tower uses music from Kahn's Arena (and The Portal). Kahn's Arena uses music from The Pit II (and The Wasteland). The last two make no sense because the tracks are on the cart!
Same weirdness with Probe's port of MK1 on Genesis (which I commented on) AND on the MS-DOS (PC) port. (The music issues with the PC port broke my heart because otherwise it was almost perfect!)
Did you / would you ever check out the DOS port? Do you have the means?
Yes, this. I'd also like to see a DOS comparison.
There are hacked rom files that have the music in the correct order on 32X as well as the real arcade music.
@@robkrasinski6217 Yeah, someone called out the MK2 one in another comment and MK Arcade Edition Enhanced fixed it for MK1, too. Hats off to those teams
My bro here is so jacked 👊
Now you got to tell me bro , how often a week do you work out ? I've got to get back to it , I was at it for over a year and a half and never looked that fit. Back to the drawing board , oh and this content is fire as always brother ! 👊
Lol thanks dude, I workout 4-6 times a week, I fast 5 days a week where my schedule is 18/6 so I skip breakfast those 5 days. And my workouts never exceed 45 mins. We gotta keep in shape in our 40’s dude health is important and you NEVER regret a workout. Keep that in mind. Thanks for the comment my friend I appreciate it 👊🏼🙏🏽
@@BushyStallionYou never work out over 45 min! Wow!
SNES is way better. Hands down.
Do you have the contrast way up? They look way too bright.
It’s just the camera I use and the way I record the videos, I’m seriously old school lol
I still have my copy of MK2 and SNES and i still dust it off and fire it up now and again. Such a fantastic port everything about it was awesome! For a 16bit machine they did a brilliant job on it.
SNES is better. Better graphics, better sound, the controller has more buttons. MK2 had blood along with the genesis version. I really can't think of anything the genesis version did better than the SNES version.
I feel like this is really a competition between the developers more so the consoles. It could’ve been done better based on who is porting it.
i was gonna say nah because the 32x version was almost as bad but then i realized Probe was hired to do both ports. why was Sega such a failure lol, not surprising at all that they're no longer around.
@@joesaiditstrue don’t know if Sega’s eventual faliure in the console market was directly connected to Midways decision to subcontract probe on a couple of games lol
SNES has way better music version
Genesis seems to have missing frames, the way u can tell is when scorpion gets uppercut he keeps his legs straight, on Nintendo his legs fold up, then straighten up when he lands
Definite missing frames 👊🏼
Love this little comparisons and retrospectives. I was a SEGA man myself growing up, but never had MK for it. However, out of these two I think the SNES offers overall a better looking and sounding game. Close, but no Motaro. SNES wins. Flawless victory. WELL DONE, Shang Fun! 👊
Usually Super Nintendo games are superior to Mega Grive graphically and in terms of sound and music but we need to remember Super Nintendo came out few years after Mega Drive.
Always preferred the grungier music on the Mega Drive - but the clarity of the voices on the SNES, e.g., Street Fighter II, did make a difference. Graphically, too, the SNES was clearly the more capable because newer console. Had both in my childhood; preferred the Sega.
@feliscorax In my case I prefer Super Nintendo, soundtrack in games like Super Castlevania IV, TMNT Turtles in time, Prince of Persia, Donkey kong country were a masterpiece.
Mega Drive on the other hand also had really good games like Ranger-X, Gunstar Heroes, Soleil, Streets of Rage II, Thunder Force IV etc...but it's a shame Mega CD didn't work out (I had one back in 93) games like Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Batman Returns CD, Terminator CD, Robo Aleste, Bari-Arm, etc...I enjoyed it all.
@@lukasjozef1774 I hear you on both. Nothing but love for both consoles, and their games, from me. Those were the days.
@feliscorax 16bits era was a Golden Age for gamers but not only consoles for. A500 is a legend, Turrican II, III, Shadow of the Beast, Another World, Flashback, etc..made history.
Those truly were amazing days.
MK2 on snes was like an apology for the atrociously edited MK1 version. sf2, MK2 and KI with the included soundtrack disk, great times at home and the arcades...Well done vid and appreciate the nostalgia trip.
I like the mega drive sounds much more... Also the graphics are sharper
Snes. Moves and fatalities are much much easier to do for whatever reason. Maybe it was just the Sega controller I used but still. Even moves where it wouldn't have made a difference were way better on snes.
bro you gotta do a side by side comparison.
Technically (sound & graphics) the SNES was always the superior console, so Devs were (usually) able to wring more out of the SNES than the Genesis / Mega Drive, this was the case for most games. The equaliser for the Sega console was that games in general played as well as the SNES games.
I will always side with the sega genesis version
I had both consoles and SNES is win
I had it for Saga and I loved it I remember waking up on Christmas and my mom and dad had it already play on the TV best times man I'm 36 now
Sounds like a great memory my friend thank you for sharing 👊🏼
Snes for the win!!! Even Tobias said its one of the best ports ever!!
The SNES version is better overall but the Genesis version has some definite high points & is a great effort. For instance the sprites look at little more crisp on Genesis, but the animations on SNES are better...
No the sprites don’t
I had the Sega Genesis only. The Sega version had a lot of missing sound fx, the color palette is limited, and the music is a little different compared to the arcade. Also, the VS. screen is missing.
We settled this in the 90’s. Blood wins Sega 🔥
MK 2 had a ton of blood on the SNES
I settled this in the 90's and 2000 up. Graphics, filters, music engineering, blood wins snes. I like Genesis though.
I was a Sega. So I’m gonna side with Sega 😂
I had both versions, genesis version first. The Super Nintendo version was far superior. You could feel it gameplay-wise.
The SNES version has more manageable AI than not just the Genesis version, but also the Arcade version. That alone makes it the better version, as far as I'm concerned. On the SNES, the AI, while still cheap, doesn't get really bad until the last few fights, just as long as you it set it to "very easy."
SNES MK2 all the way
In all fairness i noticed the water at the dead pool stage had animations on genesis it did not on snes .the programers pick and choose what they can fit in a game
Um, I don't get how anybody can say the Genesis ver was better. I had both and the SNES was better in everyway. If you do a side-by-side comparison, the SNES far more resembles the arcade ver than the Genesis. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Sega Genesis and it had some great games, but fighting games like MK and SF were superior on the SNES.
Great review and comparison video bro. I pretty much agree with your opinion on all the categories. The only thing i didn't like about the SNES version was the sound effects when you uppercut i believe or do some fatalities, its sounds like and elderly man that just stumped his toe. "Ohhhhhhh" 😂 That always cracked me up. Another thing that people sometimes forget or mabey aren't even aware that the Super NES was released a full 2 years after the Sega Genesis. I'm sure that played a factor in the technical limitations of the Sega version. 👊
Ahhh see, always cracked you up that means you actually LOVED those sound clips lol as for that fact about the Genesis it’s actually something that is looked over all the time but a great fact, however there’s a couple games that pushed the hardware even back when the system came out such as (you know what I’m gonna say lol) MUSHA! That game pushes the limits and when I take a look at MK3 you’ll see they were VERY capable of making MK2 even better on Genesis. Thanks for the comment dude, very informative 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion oh I agree, Vectorman was another Stunning game graphically for the Genesis. I wasn't referring to you in my comment. I'm well aware that you know what you're talking about. 👊
Snes game is absolutely better. However, there’s one thing I won’t relent on. The music is FAR better on Genesis. The music on SNES is awful. Which is a shame because if the music was good on snes the game would be perfect
Are you high?snes sounds closer to the arcade
Genesis sounds like the old sega system would have sounded if mk2 was made for it
The Genesis version does sound cleaner but they screw it up by putting the music at the wrong place and they made those music sound calmer. MKII isn't suppose to be calm, it's suppose to be loud and exciting cause it's a heated tournament. When I'm playing the Genesis version it feels like I'm just revisiting some past fight but when I'm playing the Super NES version it actually feels like I'm in a tournament fighting for my life.
@@VOAN fair enough. I don’t feel that way at all. And I think some of the changes (unintentionally) work awesome. Like the re-working of the Kombat tomb theme for the character select. It’s awesome! And for the most part the tracks just sound so much darker and more fearsome to me. Wasteland, living forest, armory. All sound so much better on Genesis imo
SNES
This is not even close unless you are a Genesis hugger.
Lol
SNES by far.
personally I like my arcade cabinet the best but for this the gensis version was the one for me because I grew up with that version but deffinetly props to the SNES for making a closer to the arcade version.
Nothing beats the arcade 👊🏼
Mortal Kombat 2 Unlimited on the Genesis is the true winner here
You got me there
I need to play this version 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion You can easily emulate it somewhere, Or find a physical cartridge.
Ultimately, I know the SNES version is better. But I grew up with the Sega version and will always be partial to that version. Unpopular opinion, but I prefer the music on the Sega. I think it makes the battles sound more sinister.
The Genesis version is also darker and captures the darker, more serious atmosphere. The SNES is goofier and less scary.
Thought you were talking about mk 92 still wanna see u do Sega Genesis mortal Kombat to compare good afternoon
I did that video a couple weeks ago my friend 👊🏼
Had both also in the 90s ofcourse and for MK 2 I found it superior on the SNES. I mostly used my Genesis but this game was a masterpiece on the SNES. The Genesis version had its own vibe but the colors just killed it for me and the lack of voices. The Living Forest trees wooing noises were amazing in SNES and the stages colors and sounds was just legendary. Awesome review man!! 💪🏽
Bro Genesis came out 2 years before SNES so of course the SNES is going to have better colors
The problem of the Mega Drive drive is that it looks like a unfinished game, also happened in MK1. It hasn't got all voices and some stages, details are missing, that doesn't happen on Mortal Kombat 3, I think mega drive was capable of doing it better. Mortal Kombat 3 looks very close to Super Nintendo with all voices.
Wasn't the snes closer to the arcade version
In terms of graphics. Sega had the more fluid gameplay.
Yes
If only the character names were in the health bar, you have a visually perfect emulation of the arcade.
That’s a question you should be asking when the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis was the newest consoles right now you can play the arcade version on PS3 Xbox 360 those are the last consoles that got mortal kombat 2 but came in a 3 pack mortal kombat 1 2 ultimate mortal kombat 3
