I really don’t understand half of these complaints. None of Tomy’s engines were “proportionally accurate.” Was James the same length as Gordon in the show? Was Percy the same length as Thomas? Was Diesel 10 shorter than Toby? No. Every Tomy and Trackmaster model took some liberties with the length and height of the engines to make them work with the system. You also kept pointing out bad detailing, but I don’t really see what was missing on some of them. I don’t have many Tomy engines (I’m more of a Wooden Railway guy) but the Tomy engines I do have aren’t exactly Bachmann models. They’re simplified versions of Thomas characters, and I don’t see how these ones are any different. ~ Marco Rubio
This is my issue with this video. Yes, the narrow gauge toys aren't proportionate, but like you said, a majority of the Motorized line isn't proportionally accurate. If the narrow gauge engines aren't accurate, what about Thomas himself? Every single one of his models has always been stretched out , especially the very first tomy model in the 90's (which is still being manufactured that way today). Toys that ARE perfectly proportionate are very rare (i.e Neville, Dennis), and I don't expect the narrow gauge engines (props that gave even the show producers trouble with filming the first time) to be perfect. However, I do agree with some of the complaints like lack of moving siderods or extreme cases of inaccuracy such as Rusty's face or Duncan's length. But overall, I'm very happy we even got all the engines made. While yes, most are missing important details, Tomy Plarail didn't even make some of them (Duke, Bertram, Peter Sam, Sir Handel, Proteus, Rheneas). Furthermore, knowing what the motorized line has become as of today, I'm thankful for the both the models and detailing we DID get.
I’ve recently been imagining what the narrow gauge would’ve been like if they were tack master push alongs because those are a lot smaller than regular track master which which is more accurate to the models and real life.
5:33 That's not a boiler! That's his saddle tank! 7:06 Again, that's his tank. But it isn't a saddle this time. But you can see Luke's boiler or firebox before the cab, unlike Duke's, which is completely covered by the saddle. Saddle=Saddle Tank
I think the main point of them being bad because they are disproportionate does not have aleg to stand on, as these issues apply to basically the entire Plarail - Motorised range, there are plenty of non-narrow gauge characters that also have shape issues, so I think these toys having them should be expected and ignored. Duke and the Falcons really are not fat, I think it's the whole toy being oversized. Rusty is entirely based on the small model, as evident by the different shaped front bonnet, I think the face being oversized would be because there would be too much dead space from it and the edge of her body. Peter Sam does not have six wheels because his Season Eight ruler pictures were used where he was missing them due to refurbishment. Rheneas would be even bigger if he used Percy's motor, about Duncan's size then. Duke did not have a painted bufferbeam in his references, so naturally the toy never did either, but his original release did have windows. Also, is Mighty Mac in a league of his own?
How I'd fix them Skarloey = Keep as is but with moving siderods Rheneas = Taller funnel, correct orange, moving siderodes, use Luke's drive unit Sir Handel and Proteus = Keep as is Peter Sam = Keep as is but with moving siderods Rusty = Make based on Season 4 design but with Luke's drive unit for accurate cab Duncan = Keep as is but use Luke's drive unit Duke = Keep as is, not sure if siderodes would fit on the model with the cab in the way Luke = Use Plarail for both regions Victor = Trackmaster shape and drive unit but with Plarail's details
It would have been awesome if Tomy made a special Narrow Gauge system. Like new track, engines, destinations, etc. they might have even been able to use the Capsule Plarail motorized chassis for them
My thoughts: Skarloey- Would've been better if they put Oliver's siderods on him, but overall it's pretty good. 8/10 Rheneas- Would've been better if THE SIDERODS ACTUALLY MOVED 6/10 Sir Handel- Despite being an 0-4-0 here, I'm at least glad they actually bothered the mold his trailing wheels. But why can't they be consistent with his wheel coloring??? 7/10 Peter Sam- Okay, why didn't you mold his trailing wheels, Tomy?!? 4/10 Rusty- Ohhh nah 2/10 Duncan- WHY IS HE SO LONG BUT THE DETAILS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD- 3/10 Freddie- The best narrow gauge engine of the Tomy toyline, 100% agree with you 10/10 Duke- I do like the fact they modelled him after prop-reference photos, but he's pretty decent 6.5/10 Victor- The trackmaster one's better (Plarail: 7/10; Trackmaster: 9/10) Luke- The plarail one's alright, the trackmaster one is below average (Plarail: 7/10; Trackmaster: 5.5/10)
The only two narrow gauge engines in this range that are bad are Rusty and Duncan, everyone else is just mid. Skarloey is one of the better ones in my opinion, mainly because I had him since I was very young and still in good condition. I agree with your take on Freddie, he actually benefits from being so long because he is long in the first place. I was also not the biggest fan of the plarail victor either lol
I mean, if we're going to be judging the TOMY trains by accuracy of scale and proportion, they can all be considered bad in that regard. Thomas has 4 wheels and is the same size as Duck and Percy, Murdoch has no moving side rods and is the same size as Gordon and Henry, and Toby is larger than Diesel 10. TBH Thomas has always had a problem with its merchandise not really representing the characters very well, and really the only one that even attempted it to a degree was ERTL (which has an even worse scaling problem) and some of the Japan-exclusive merchandise lines.
I feel like they should’ve just did what they did with Harvey and have the engines be unmotorized and be pushed along by a motorized coach/slate truck/gunpowder van, hell that’s what they did with Mighty Mac and couldn’t have been that hard Trackmaster/Tomy Harvey has great proportions, yes would the NG engines be the same or similar dive to Harvey? Yes but would you rather have Harvey be the same size as Skarloey or have Rusty be the size of a brick? TLDR someone make 3D prints of the NG engines at the same scale as Tomy Harvey please : )
I do kinda agree that the narrow gauge engines were one of the weaker characters from Tomy and trackmaster but I don’t hate them except for Rusty and Duncan. You know what I would rather have, capsule plarail narrow gauge engines.
How u fix these is if u made them like the road vehicles where they have smaller track and smaller battery’s to power them Basically shrinking the motor design and track design
Honestly... I can't disagree My favorite one so far (in no particular order) Is: Duke Freddie Luke(both versions you mentioned) Victor(also both versions you mentioned) And Bertram But even then they're kind of suck Tomy plarail is pretty cool but I think that what would have made them even cooler is if they made a small scale range for the ng railway Like smaller engines with smaller boundaries and such It is possible judging by some types of "Trackmaster knockoffs" out there Y'know the one that just has random decals as detailing Low quality Plenty of versions of other characters that have nothing to do with Thomas Not sure if you know what I'm talking about but I think the narrow gauge engines should have been that And in case they can't do that, then well at least make them into push along models Kinda like TM push along, yeah it would suck that they can't move by themselves but at least they are proportionally accurate and small This could also be said to Mike Of TM2 honestly
You forgot ONEEEE thing and no it’s not mighty Mac It’s the wind up toys they look so RIGHT next to the tomy track because they are just small versions of the bigger engines plus the track!
I forgot Mighty Mac . . . Oops 😅
He's pretty good considering he has two ends. Prob my second favorite next to Freddie.
hey, you should make a custom set based on heave ho thomas
Mighty Mac and Freddie are the only ng engines I like tbh.
Mighty Mac was unique knowing how his model can flip positions plus the model isn’t battery powered.
What about the SPEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNN
To be honest, if you wanna make very accurate scaling for the narrow gauge engines just buy the capsule playrail and boom accurate scaling
I didn’t even notice Peter Sam was missing wheels bc the model looked so good
My goat, doesn’t post just on a Monday. We’ve hit the perfecto immaculeto timeline
wat happened to mighty mac?
This is Awful Narrow engines, mighty Mac is too good for this video
He's prob the only good one he's short which makes him looks good
He's peak
Mighty Mac was to peak to be here
Mighty Mac are so good is doesnt deserve a video it deserve a one hour long video talking about mighty Mac toys because they are a legend

I guess it still kinda counts since the boiler is underneath the tank.

@merlinandmurdoch7837 It was a satirical comment. Apologies if it sounded serious.

One question tho,
Doesn‘t skarloey have rear trailing wheels too?
It would have been awesome if Tomy made a special Narrow Gauge system. Like new track, engines, destinations, etc. they might have even been able to use the Capsule Plarail motorized chassis for them
Why not use the take along models instead
This is why I'll stick with using Wooden Railway for Narrow Gauge engines, or ERTL, or Take Along/Take N' Play to say the least.
i could try and make a tomy oliver skarloey
edit: just need a skarloey first...
1:58 Sir, Handel is too fat is funny😂😂😂
Thomas should tell the narrow gauge engines they’re too *FAT* they need exercise. Way too inconsistent and disproportionate
OG Tomy and classic Trackmaster was where it’s at for me. I remember the Target on Roosevelt rd having them.
If Plarail and Trackmaster did Railway Series characters, I wonder how Ivo Hugh and the Culdee Fell engines would look.
My thoughts:
Skarloey- Would've been better if they put Oliver's siderods on him, but overall it's pretty good. 8/10
Rheneas- Would've been better if THE SIDERODS ACTUALLY MOVED 6/10

Peter Sam- Okay, why didn't you mold his trailing wheels, Tomy?!? 4/10
Rusty- Ohhh nah 2/10
Duncan- WHY IS HE SO LONG BUT THE DETAILS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD- 3/10
Freddie- The best narrow gauge engine of the Tomy toyline, 100% agree with you 10/10
Duke- I do like the fact they modelled him after prop-reference photos, but he's pretty decent 6.5/10
Victor- The trackmaster one's better (Plarail: 7/10; Trackmaster: 9/10)
Luke- The plarail one's alright, the trackmaster one is below average (Plarail: 7/10; Trackmaster: 5.5/10)

It's such a shame that not all the narrow gauge engines were done that well because of how amazing they look in the show
8:01 I instinctively was about to click the side of the screen
i don’t care if they’re oversized i like them they are funny little things
Nobody noticed....
Not one person noticed the subtle bit of real life humor you included in this video.

Ok, nice video, but where's Mighty Mac or Millie?
I dont think they made a tomy millie (i dont 100% know tho) and Tomy mighty mac is just too good
Millie was planned for Trackmaster, but sadly cancelled.
Honestly... I can't disagree

Is:

Freddie
Luke(both versions you mentioned)
Victor(also both versions you mentioned)

But even then they're kind of suck
Tomy plarail is pretty cool but I think that what would have made them even cooler is if they made a small scale range for the ng railway
Like smaller engines with smaller boundaries and such
It is possible judging by some types of "Trackmaster knockoffs" out there
Y'know the one that just has random decals as detailing
Low quality
Plenty of versions of other characters that have nothing to do with Thomas
Not sure if you know what I'm talking about but I think the narrow gauge engines should have been that
And in case they can't do that, then well at least make them into push along models
Kinda like TM push along, yeah it would suck that they can't move by themselves but at least they are proportionally accurate and small
This could also be said to Mike Of TM2 honestly
wait plaril luke exist?
