The magic was choosing him to sing this particular song even if he wasn't really known as much of a singer. His untrained voice and lack of technical skill imparts the song with naiveté, and raw vulnerability. It raises the stakes and the emotional intensity of the song's plea.

In June of 1968 I met a girl named Jeanette, on our first date this is the first song we heard together. On July 7th. I reported for the draft. On December 9th. 1968 I arrived in RVN and was assigned to a unit as an infantryman. We wrote, she more than me, as I write when I could. I somehow managed to make it through that period my life. We wrote more often. I got out of the service on July 7th. 1970. We dated again. On May 1st. 1971 that girl and I married and danced to this tune at our wedding. To this day I am the luckiest guy in the world and this is still a great tune....peace

Absolute stroke of genius getting Herb Alpert--who was a brilliant instrumentalist but not an experienced singer--to perform this. A professional singer might have made it too slick and impersonal, but Alpert just sounds like a regular guy pouring his heart out to his girl, and that's what makes it feel so personal.

We were all sitting around talking one afternoon. It dawned on me that sitting there were four generations of the ladies in my family at one time, together. My Mama has been gone seven years now. The one irrefutable fact of this Life I was warned about growing up and sadly did have to learn and endure daily is that of all the people you will ever know... your Mama is the most important one. And the one missed the most. There are times my heart and soul ache just wanting to see her laugh again... or just to hear her voice. This song brought back the memory of that day. It is a good song.

@@mariocisneros911 so what’s your point? Millions of weddings have taken place over the years and many have not been real because there are times when the love between the coupe is not equal or there’s no love at all. It happens a lot. I’ve been there myself only to find out 4 years later she never really loved me and she left me without warning for someone else. She’s now on her 5th marriage. Bad choice for me but after all she was a good actress. And I’m not alone in that and it can happen to anyone. I remarried and I now know very well what real love is.
All in a way of saying it’s important to know that love is the real deal before you get married. Herb and Lani’s love for one another is a real testimony of love that’s real and it has lasted for many years and probably after one of them passes. My mom is 98 and after my dad passed in 2013 mom has always said there will never be any other. That’s love, and that’s real.

Tears stream down your face when you think that this was the apex for this kind of music in 1960s.
Genius Burt Bacharach's music. Genius Hal David's unforgettable lyrics.
Two great musicians. And the other great one -- Herb Alpert -- making it come to life.
What a song, what a time. Every "guy" gets choked up and has a girl he's thinking about when this song is playing.

I agree. I don’t think any song at 11years old touched me like this song.
It helped me imagine what love can be like and how much you can be loved.
Sadly, the personification of Herb in this song and video is somewhat of a fantasy still for me. 56 years later.
It was a nice dream though that helped me into adolescence.
I am surprised it touched me so at 11 years old.

I was two years old when this song came out in 1968. I heard it quite often growing up. I just heard it in an episode of Bates Motel. I suspected it was written by Burt Bacharach. Hal David co-wrote it with him. His songs usually have a distinct sound to them, that I cannot explain. May he rest in peace.

10/27/2021. 63 now and my dad passed away a long time ago but riding in my dads car, coming back at night from dinner or a bar, listening to this on some AM Radio station (didn't have FM yet) my dad would turn this song up a little and start singing along as best he could. I was too young to know or understand what the song was about but hearing it today makes me understand why my dad loved this song so much. My dad was a Chief in the Navy, we had already landed on the moon and although we weren't rich, we still had as much or more than most people. Vietnam was still in full swing and I faced an uncertain future as to what to do with my own life, hell I was still hugging my teddy bear. But the music of my childhood, I can always come on here at YT and go back to a time I thought would never end. My dad looked so good in his uniform, he was SO HANDSOME and ALL THE LADIES LOVED HIM. I take after my dad. The ladies love me too. And I still hug my teddy bears.

Me and my siblings grew up with Herb Alpert, and the Tijuana Brass, being played over and over in our home by our mom, who loved this man's music. Funny, I love his music now 🎶 ❤ You had great taste mom 😥 💔

I can tell , by the amount of comments , this song touches many of us. It touches me cause in summer 1968 I was 15 and would hang around the Twin Brooks Golf Course hoping a golfer would call me over to be his Caddy. This song came on the radio the most times during that summer while I waited . A great song with good memories to all of us.

Knees still turning to jelly…….❤. Heard this song when I was ten at a roller rink. Almost 60 years later I listen to this, and I’m back in that roller rink, going through my first crush…

Sheer innocence ... no drugs, violence or sex filled lyrics. Just great songwriting and musicianship.

Herb Alpert has done more for other Musicians than many other people know .His talent is beyond our comprehension. I think it's really time to give him his due recognition as one of the most gifted musical artists of the Twentieth Century. He's also done more for the Latin Movement in American Music than many of us can realize . He brought us into the future where Jazz, Latin and Pop are part of the fabric of American Culture .

My father would order these albums from the TV guide Columbia Collection and he turned me on to these artists of his time, Lou Rawls, Sinatra, Dionne Warwick, Trini Lopez, Sergio Mendes, 5 Dimension, and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (Great Album Covers) I was listening to the Beatles, Doors, Mamas & the Papas, Grateful Dead, etc. I learned to appreciated it all to this day.The 60's was a great time for music and a change that would affect many. This song bring it all back
