  • June recalls the night she met Ward at the USO in this 4 1/2 minutes of video highlights from the Feb. 1, 1988 Ensign Cleaver episode of The New Leave it to Beaver in which David Prather and Courtney Gebhart play young Ward Cleaver and June Evelyn Bronson

That was me. I wanted to be just like Ward. I met my wonderful bride almost the same way. She was stunning. I admired her from across the room and I knew she was the One. We met through the help of a friend and I began to get her use to having me around. I popped the question and she said YES immediately. We had to wait 2 years, but then we were married. I wanted what Ward had. A wife, a house and a couple of kids. A job where I could support them and come home to them every night. We had two children, a boy and a girl. This October, we will celebrate 40 years of blissful marriage. I'm not exactly Ward Cleaver, but I got no complaints.

Watching the old series the second time around as an adult.... the issue I laughed at the most was Wally and Beaver always new that they were cruising for a bruising from Dad. How many times did I hear Dad's gonna kill us! line. Ward Never even threatened a spanking and I don't recall him raising his voice. ..... Hind sight... Hugh Beaumount being a minister (for real) surely carried over to the show. his demeanor showed through beautifully. (the term escapes me now (when using a prop) anyway The simplest thing I saw Barbara B. do (and often) when she picked up the phone ... was listened for the dialtone first and then dial. yep those were the days!🙂

Maria Riva, daughter of Marlene Dietrich, said her mother got the clap from soldiers while hostessing there during WW2. Well, you have cited (third/fourth-hand) two of the millions of interactions and experiences at USOs. I have no doubt there were some bad experiences and surely many of the young men were looking to pick up women just as young women were looking to find a man. I think we (people in general) also tend to make assumptions that something negative we read or hear is the truth in most cases, when that may only be the exception or not the norm.

In some of the episodes of "Leave it to Beaver" Ward had mentioned he'd served in the Navy. They look soo good together they look like the ideal couple. This should've been part of "Love American Style" from that TV Series of the Lt 60's to early 70's. At least the episode where they met. He was a handsome young man and she was a beautiful young lady. The chemistry certainly was there!!!

For people complaining about consistency, I think LITB was pretty good at being consistent. There was one episode, "The Teacher's Daughter" where Wally and Eddie are double dating. Eddie comments that he doesn't really like the girl he's taking out that much, but that her father is really big in the construction business and that could help him when he's starting a career. In the New Leave It To Beaver show, Eddie has his own construction company. I have no idea if this was done on purpose, but I found it interesting.

I've just stumbled into this after searching fir Judy Hensler and finding that wonderful clip you posted of her as an adult with kids, being as delightfully snarky as ever to her nemesis, "Beaver" Cleaver, who for some reason, she still hates as much as she did when they were in Miss Landers' class. Consider this my comment for that video since you have them turned off there.
Also, what a cool flashback sequence this is, fanciful though it may be. It's so much FUN!! The little touches are perfect too, like the Glen Miller take on the LITB themesong, and how he's gleefully whistling it as he walks to June's door! I vaguely remember one or two of these scenes from my original viewing of TNLITB, but they stand really well on their own. Great stuff!!

A lot of people's voices deepen with age, including women. Think of what the average 20 year old college guy sounds like compared with a man in his 40s.

@@texasred2702 sure, I get that. But in a movie where the aim is to make viewers believe this is a young version of a character they are very familiar with, a detail like that can do a lot to make or break the connection. At least for me it did.

I had to subscribe to your channel, SOMEONE has good taste, and a certain refined sense of culture in their work, if the choice of this video is any indication of those qualities. I too remember them saying in the original show that they met in high school. This guy playing Ward has too high a pitched voice. Also, as conservative as he was I find it hard to believe he would grab June and kiss her after just meeting her. The real June would of probably turned her head and then slapped him. Sorry, I know it’s sour grapes on my part.

I remember an interview with the late Malachi Throne when the interviewer complimented him on his voice and he said that it was due to scotch and cigarettes (he had long quit smoking by that point). Back then, most men (and women) smoked regularly, usually cigarettes, but also cigars and pipes. So most people's voices became deeper because of it. I do not know if Hugh Beaumont ever smoked cigarettes or cigars, but he looked more like a pipe smoker. By the time of this episode, you had far less people smoking, so as a result, most people's voices are more high-pitched. So this actor playing Ward in the flashback seemed to either not have been a smoker or a very light smoker at best.

He didn’t have a high pitched voice. It’s WW2 he’s 18 or 19. Men stay in puberty until 21. When the show came on air in 1957 beaver was like 10, so he was born 47 & Wally 46. So Ward married June right after the war in 45. Joined the Navy before he could get drafted by the Army in 43. The fact they only had 2 kids when birth control was no existent until the “pill” came out in 1960 was rare. Most families had 3-6 kids, which is why they are called Baby Boomers which was the largest spike ever recorded in population which was out of control until after the pill was introduced & still required abortion caused by misuse or deliberate non use in order to turn unplanned or unwanted life into "wanted" life. That is why Gen-X born 1960-1980 was the first generation born that was wanted. But at great cost because birth control cut our numbers in half. 1/4 that of Baby Boomers.
