Ive just relocated to Thailand after spending 17 years in Egypt, karnak. Wonderfull life, then it started to become dificult for foreigners living there, visa wise. Having been in construction all my working life it was difucult to live with their idea's on building standards, so ended up working virtually every day i lived there lol doing corrections and updating my large property, 3 apartments. Enjoyed it immensely, but quite happy to leave when i did, januery this year. I would advise that anyone should think twice about buying property there against what it was when i first arrived there.

I don't know about Luxor, but I've heard some pretty heavy first-hand stories there. Siwa Oasis is not at that stage. We didn't have a land reg till recently and only now can you legally register your land in your name etc. Slowly slowly. UAE seem to be coming in and buying up the area. I plan to sell and move to rural Spain. Onwards and upwards :)

@somewheredifferent can't understand that as when I arrived there in 2007 the land/property ownership option had been operating in the whole of Egypt for at least 8 years. Maybe it's a regional thing. I wish you luck in selling, due to the stupid increasing exchange rates I just walked away from my property selling at a loss of £100,000. Such is life.

Don't know what to say to that really. Most say I am crazy, one commented the other day " A fool is quickly parted with his money". It's not for every one this way of life. It is however , right for me :) Are you restoring a house at the moment? Or planning to?

This is my literal dream. Wow I’m so glad I found you from the Turnip. Now I need to investigate how to do the same…

Its a lot of hard work and every one you know will give you reason why they, sorry you... should not do it. Speak to people who have done it, not people who will never do it and.... you will find a way :)

If that box didn't load up when on the grid, perhaps it doesn't like the power. I suggest a power conditioner; but that won't correct frequency variance, just voltage sags and transients. A frequency stabilizer may be required. In any case, some power conditioning and frequency stabilization may be required and appreciated by your young 'charges'. They will feel assured their laptops will operate, as it's necessary for their ability to make money to remain there, and yours too. There is a beast called an online UPS which runs continuously off the battery whilst connected to the grid to remain charged. It's much rarer, and be sure to absolutely confirm the output is independent of the grid.
Also, a small solar panel could keep your battery topped up. Although, I knew a diplomat for Sierra Leone who was robbed blind by the hired help, so not sure what you can leave behind. In fact, I would not even be surprised if they're using the battery when you're gone. I would suggest making - discreetly and unobserved - a small unobtrusive mark somewhere on the battery; telling no one, and check it next time. Just for shits and giggles.
But I suppose one must not report back here in the RUclips comments, because the second and assumedly also Third World has cel phones and discovered their favourite RUclipsr. Thanks for telling us where you put the key - just for emergencies, of course - we would never use it all year while you're gone.

Thanks for the feedback. Don't really understand what you are saying. Yes would not connect when plugged into through the UPS, yet when the power did go down, it worked without changing how it was plugged in and assigned an IP address. Since then it worked fine, it runs the CCTV cameras when I am away which deals with the other half of you message :) Are you saying I need something to regulate the power that goes into the UPS battery, so it gets the right volts and amps etc?

Unfortunately the set up there makes no money at all, so having staff is not on option these days. Thank you for your interest.
