Out of the 4 RTX 3070s we've tested so far (3 of them in our OC stream recap), the ASUS ROG Strix is the best we've yet worked with. It's also the best RTX 30 overclocker thus far, including versus the 3080 and 3090 cards, except its more limited GPU prevents it from outmatching RTX 3080 GPUs. We'll be looking at noise, thermals, noise-normalized thermals, and overall performance (and overclocking) of the 3070 Strix. Thank you for your patience while we work through all the RTX content.

Thanks for your patience while we worked through all the RTX 30 content. We have 2 more tear-downs done and we'll publish them shortly, but we'll quickly be ramping into AMD Ryzen 5000 (Zen 3) CPU reviews for the next little while. For now, enjoy the last of our RTX reviews for a little bit.

This is a brief reminder intels compiler is still cheating on ryzen chips in some applications that were never fixed despite the FTC getting legally involved.
"In addition, allegedly, Intel secretly redesigned key software, known as a compiler, in a way that deliberately stunted the performance of competitors’ CPU chips. Intel told its customers and the public that software performed better on Intel CPUs than on competitors’ CPUs, but the company deceived them by failing to disclose that these differences were due largely or entirely to Intel’s compiler design."

Zen 3s unified cache means that going from a 3700X to a 5950X is going to allow 4 times more cache to see those juicy 4 threads me being obnoxious ended up yielding.
Remember how StarCraft 2 was 2 threads only?
Thats right. Its not anymore.

Best one ive seen in years. You guys are night owls like me.
V2 rocket lake probably will beat zen 3 in single thread performance, though not by much. going from 10 to 8 core transistor estate means they are going all out for single threaded performance.
@DCMFB Linus is a cool guy.

Steve has ascended beyond his human form. This explains how he continues to put out high quality content on so little sleep. o.0
In all seriousness, thank you for putting in all the effort needed to ensure the scientific value of your reviews!
Was wondering if anyone would catch this!
@@GamersNexus Hey dude, just wanted to say that I only discovered your channel a few months ago, but you instantly became my favourite reviewer for tech. As a biochem graduate, its refreshing to see someone who employs similar methodology and properly caveats things where appropriate to help everyone make informed decisions, and does not shy away from calling out bad design and shitty practices - as determined by data and user experience. Your videos/articles on VRMs have also massively helped me fill in my big blind spot in understanding, and the factory tours stuff was awesome, I even got my dad into that series. LEGEND!
Humans? I thought we drove them to extinction years ago.
@@GamersNexus I feel like it was more of a "when" than "if" people would notice.
The robot's AI is slipping. One of these days, it will probably say "I am a robot" on camera.
Buy a card?
One does not simply walk into a store and buy a card.
These are mythical creatures that must be hunted down, blood sacrifices be made, and prayers to the gods.
well the overprice do...
And If you`re lucky, one descends upon this earth, than it`s a fight to the death with other consumers
As someone who works in an electronics store, I still fail to believe they exist.
3070 is not that rare. it's their feral brothers who are to be hunted.
I could get an RTX 3070 in Germany right now ... for 799€ and up. 🤣
At that point, I'd rather put another 200 on top and buy AMDs flagship.
Thank you for all the hard work GN.

Seeing this builds my hype for the 6000 series testing later on in the month!
You're probably the best RUclipsr when it comes to reviews. Love the knowledge you share and also we can skip to specific points we want to see by looking at the times you post in the video description. Keep it going man!
Steve is one of the top few reviewers with integrity that actually goes into much detail and gives credit where it is due and lets companies when when they done goofed up. GREAT JOB

These are $799 now, lol.
I found a 3080 strix selling for 2.5k lol
Just bought one for 900$ in Sweden
I appreciate it when you sponsor a product you reviewed and made sure is good.
Thank you for reviewing one of the STRIX models.
It was the model I was looking to get as I've had good luck with them in the past and no one else (I watch) had really been able to get a hold of them yet!
In Australia this 3070 strix card actually costs more than the EVGA 3080 FTW Ultra...
Yeah quite honestly it’s fucking stupid they should be between $770-$890aud to fit in with MSRP + 10% GST
Ya just got NVIDIA'd bro
How...
The strix 3070 is $1299 and I am in the long line waiting for my Ftw Ultra 3080 I payed $1259 for.
@@LOLn1nja that's amazing. :D
Thanks as always for such in depth and scientific content. It amazes me the level of detail you go in to making these reviews. I believe you are the number one reviewer on youtube for that reason. Keep up the fantastic work Steve.
Been waiting for STRIX reviews
Thanks for covering this, even if it doesn't seem important. A $50 usd difference often turns into a $150 Cad difference, so I appreciate the reviews of lower end stuff. As it stands right now, at my local Best Buy, an RTX 3090 is $2000 and RTX 3080's go for $1000. The 3070 just showerd up and it's $700+ ... and of course none are available ;)
They are mostly more than that.
Great review. Will need to watch it in March of 2021 when it is potentially going to be available for sale.
Thank you for he gaming benchmarks. It might not be useful for budget cards but OC focused cards should get a gaming benchmark or two. Great video, cheers!
thank you for putting out all that information! you guys got the most hustle #respect
I can't imagine the GPU overload you've had lately and I also don't envy you when the Radeon 60 series comes out. You'll only have about 2 weeks with CPU's before the GPUs release. Best of luck for the rest of the year. You've earned all the subscribes and then some.
In the future, can you add a legend to the heatplate pressure maps? Would be useful to know how colors correspond to what values, as well as address other questions (e.g. do colors map to the same specific values across different pressure maps, are they relative values between max and min for the current map, etc)
Managed to snag one of these from B&H yesterday, be here tomorrow. Can't wait!
Steve - "I want to get away from GPU's"
Incoming Raden cards - sad noises
For now cause Zen 3 is releasing

Gonna be a great video as always, Keep up the amazing work!!
I'm absolutely loving my Strix 3070! it was one of the few available at micro center when I went and while I wasn't happy with the price initially, I'm in love with the card and would buy it again in a heart beat!
What resolution do you play at? Don´t want to be that guy to point it out but 8GB vram is gonna make this car outdated fast. AMD just showed Godfall that use 12GB vram in 4k on max (with ray tracing) settings and we should expect something similar in many games from now on. This Strix is a nice card and if you play at 1080p you will be fine but for 1440p+ gaming i would not buy 8GB card today.
@@arteljus983 allocated doesn't mean used and 8gb is more than plenty for 1440p and even 4k. There are a handful of games that would realistically use more than 8gb at 4k and those are modded games with custom textures.
@@arkdesign9517 It´s the developer of the game that present it and say that game use 12GB vram. I just repete what he said and if you use some common sense you will understand that this will soon be the norm. We had cards with 8GB vram for four years or something now and games that are in developement will use it and more. I don´t care if game allocate vmem or use it. All i care is if the performance decrese if there is not enough of vmem or even if you can´t use some settings because of it. In 2021 we will probably have a lot of games that use more than 8GB vmem so buy card with that amount if you play at 1080p. If not wait for 12/16/20GB vmem cards. Don´t be fooled by Nvidia.
@@arteljus983 it will take some years for that to happen, new gen consoles are the stop point for developers to not been able to go so far for system requirements
How much did u pay for it?
YESSS THANK YOU!! i really love this card but i was waiting for a detailed review to make a decision
spend $100 more for a 3080...
Idk how but my father got one at micro center for Christmas for me I’m so thankful because for the past 2 years I’ve been playing on his 6 year old pc which has a gtx 760 and now when I build my new pc it’s gonna be a ton of fun
great content as usual, ty GN!
Someone needs to make a compilation of every time Steve says "nebulous". It's just his own word at this point.
Was there ever a teardown vid of this exact card made? thought it was mentioned in the video but cant seem to find it
thank you for this video good stuff as always.
That golden t-shirt of 1 million subs😀 that shirt is dang good! Also your precise explanation and experiment data are also very much unique,🔥
Good Review. Much Thanks.
Thank you guys for covering all these GPUs! Any chance we'll ever see a review for the Asus Strix 3090 OC?
I already did some looking in to Turing when I got my 2080ti back in 2018, but I would like to see an in depth look on how the 2000 and 3000 series cards scale with regards to power limit. From what I can tell running most games at over 80% power limit yields very little additional performance while costing a huge load of more power draw.
I am honestly waiting for the 6900XT Steve Burke extreme water cooled edition instead of Kingpin
That’s gonna be one **nice** video.
When u see the pitchfork that's when u know it's good
Not yet got into OC but these are great videos to watch. The FE is just so nice looking I might try to hold out if they are not in stock and other become in stock. On the other hand AMD/Radeon might change my mind all together.
Just hang in there a little longer, Steve!!! We need ya buddy! Sleep will come - but before then, we need you to stay in top of your game!!
Would be interesting to see comparison with other Asus 3070 versions: TUF and Dual
Wow, I have never been so early for multiple YT videos in the same day.
Will you ever do Graphics Optimization guides again? Like you did for The Witcher 3 or Watch Dogs 2. I would love to see a Cyberpunk 2077 guide from you guys eventually.
In the U.K. it’s close to $300 more than the FE. Dealers are after over £660 compared to £469 for the FE. Just a crazy increase in cost over other cards and the FE.
Great vid! Are the G6 non X modules ECC on the 3070s too? Just curious. I always kinda think of these non flagship Strix cards in comparison to other high end cards like 3080-3090 Strix or others as that puts the price in context a bit more, but yeah a lower end 3080 makes sense since there are great coolers close to MSRP.
And now it is $800, wish I could have snagged one back then...
850
Hey Steve. Like always, an awesomely detailed review :D. On the note of Ryzen 5000 series... do you guys have any info which retailers are going to list it on November 5th in USA?
Thank you once again for a thorough review.
One question I have is how indicative is the 3070 strix cooler and performance to that of the 3080 strix? Would've liked to see that review too, to get a better idea of the value.
Thanks, stay safe and take care!
Nice message in thumbnail
Just got one of these on today's best buy drop, I know I'm very fortunate
Love your reviews and look for a MSI Ventus 3080 oc review~
7:16 The goal is indeed a small box with whiskers.
0:43 the value is a little bit more nebulous. Steve this is epic wording.
I bought this gpu after watching the video. So far I am happy with my choice. Thanks ❤️
I'm still waiting for my 3080 Strix (ETA Dec 1st). The Strix cooler looks legit, but hard to justify the cost on a 3070. The price is just to close to lower binned 3080s.
Great in depth review thank you. Ok still bought the rog strix 3070 😅 i run mij rog strix gtx 1070 @ 2100 clock and mem + 500 it is a beast
I love content like this. I bought the Strix 3070. It's going on a Strix Z390E and 9900k. Can't wait to throw BF4 at it.
Crazy how expensive these things get. Good work on the review though
Holy moly - more than 300W overclocked...this seems to be the 1.9 power efficiency improvement Jenson mentioned !
Good for mining 🤔
Don't even say the word MSRP to my face lol.
They don't exist at this point in time.
Only scalper prices. Even from official retailers.
Yep, I have a shop chain in this area that is listing every single card for +$70. Fucking assholes.
@@uthumb1 yea I was on a waiting list for zen 3/rtx 3000 and they were selling IN STOCK 3070s for 1400$ cad. At first I thought it was a mistake but they has more 3070s for higher prices...
@@reelwater7983 1200euro here... $1400
You’re a legend Steve.
Grats GN. Well deserved
11:24 Steve fails the Turing test(!)
"Alternating fan flow directions"
ASUS loves to harp about that but I haven't seen anyone testing if it really makes a difference. So does it really work in this configuration, or is it just another marketing bullet point that doesn't really hold water?
"Placebo Slider" sounds like White Castle's new and improved burger that tastes exactly the same.
For such a small performance uplift I don't see how this card could ever be recommended by anyone for the price.
It's the cheapest 3070 @ $1100 in our place now. Hearing $600 is like a steal now
Yep Steve. A change from graphics cards would be good. I can't wait to see Zen 3 results. Then back to graphics with 6800XT and then 6900XT.
The only reason I bought this was it was the first 3070 I saw on Amazon on launch day.
Ayo, is there a Arctic Freezer 420 review on the way? Very excited
Just a brief mention of Colorful at the end. Now THAT's a tear-down I'm dying to hear/see! (Not the card, the bullying, for those who haven't heard)
The quality is there, and so is the mass. What a cute lil chonker
Now, let's get ready for some BIGger numbers.
2:12 mentions a teardown video for this card, did that ever go up? Desperately trying to find a video on the strix cards showing how the fans connect...
I managed to get the palit 3070 gaming pro, world great, overclocked doesn't passes 68 degrees. Silent as well. Cannot complain.
Curious to see how this card does compared to my 3070 FE Overclock. Just started the video 🤣. I've been crashing like crazy finding that sweet spot, right on the edge. +30-50 fps on my most played games so far, over my 2070 Super. That's nuts!
Do you think you'll do a review of the Gigabyte Vision cards? My favorite aesthetic design this gen but not sure if the performance/cooling holds up.
I was able to overclock to just:
+75 GPU (~2060 MHz)
+1150 Memory (8150 MHz)
On the EVGA Black RTX 3070 with power limit maxed
Ultimately I settled on an underclock which cut power to ~75% TDP
1845 MHz at 868mV
+1150 Memory (8150 MHz)
Hey dont forget increasing ram speed on those 3000 cards can actually hurt your performance. Watch Jayz2cents video about it. It doesnt crash at your +1150 but it could lower fps instead. I just got my Ventus 2X 3070 and got it to 2130mhz at 1025mV. Running around 74°C in heaven benchmark.
@@smashenYT Hey, I'd like to ask how's the ventus 2x? Isnt it running hot, loud under heavy loads?
I can't believe we still don't have a 3080 strix review
ima get this video notification about 3 days later thanks YT
Are there plans in the future to review the oc capabilities of the water cooled variants when they become available (asus and gigabyte have both announced water cooled 3080s and 3090s)
As soon as I seen the pitchfork in the thumbnail I knew this was going to be underwhelming for the price.
Another great review of a card I still can't get a hold of. ;_;
can you do a video on how much of a difference CPU's actually make in workstation tasks when using hardware acceleration? I see so many people saying AMD for any workstation because of the CPU number but they have always been without GPU acceleration when almost NO ONE uses just the CPU for rendering, I would love to see how much of a difference CPU makes during hardware accelerated rendering.
Could you do a quick and dirty data dump on the second channel for any card you did some testing on but don't feel like reviewing?
If Big Navi's performance is true, can you guys do a comparison for the features each one has? Like if Nvidia has shadowplay, how is AMD's answer? Encoding? I think this is where the battleground might be if the rasterisation is within a few percent.
The price is worth it in the US. In Australia they are asking $1300 AUD for the OC edition and more than $1200 AUD for the non-OC. note that the current exchange rate would put $600 usd at around $840 aud. I'd accept $900 or even $999. I was planning to get one but...not for more than $300 aud on top of the American MSRP.
I recently got my hands on it. I bought it because it was that one or a slightly cheaper model from another manufacturer, but I liked the look of the strix more. It cost me roughly 1100$ and it was from a retail store. But what is one to do? Keep using a 1050ti after your 1080ti dies or buy a new gpu?
At the time of buying, I had no idea that the strix was pretty much the most juiced up variant.
I'd like to request a review of the Gigabyte Aorus ATC800 air cooler, could you please do this Steve? Can't find a single review of it on RUclips despite it having been available for around a year now.
Thanks in advance, have a great day and keep up the great work.
Dear Steve and GN. Could I trouble you to try to give us some insight with different benchmarks by using 1080p all low settings instead of ultra. This way the 240hz 360hz gamers will really know what this generation of AMD and Nvidia GPUs can push in a cpu bound scenario. It seems counterintuitive but we have noticed quite different results between high end GPUs with high IPC cpus. It would be nice to know if we have reached 240 or 360fps on any game such as battlefield, cod mw, valorant, etc
Sorry I forgot to say that in some games like the frostbite engine you have to press tilde then type in GameTime.MaxVariableFps 400 for example to get past the 200fps stock cap. Why on earth did AMD leave the cap on some of their benchmarks haha. Still love AMD of course
Ditto. I am especially interested in this and what happens to a 5950x vs 10900k
i simp for you
Dude yes please! Go Steve Go!

These go for around 1050 bucks new on gov group now. They were 950 a month ago but still that’s a great price considering the market and they don’t charge tax. So 1100 after shipping new. Considering these are selling for 1300-1800 on Amazon, eBay and Newegg rn and the fact that even 2070s are selling for 1k plus rn that’s a good ass deal if you can’t wait.
Nothing beats the Placebo Slider. It's like free performance.
Sana all!
I found a Palit RTX3080 GamingPro OC and a STRIX 3070 OC at a local store. Guess what, the Palit 3080 card was cheaper than a 3070 by around 20$ (most stores have similar pricings but no stock). nVidia MSRPs work in mysterious ways.
Nvidia's MSRP only applies to their cards(FE). Board partners can sell theirs at whatever price they choose
Just got one of these for 960 bucks new plus shipping. Didn’t have to pay tax. So I spent just under 1000 in total. Around 993 to be exact. I’d say that’s great considering gpu prices and the market rn. These retail for around 750 Msrp so that’s only around 250 over Msrp.
Is there any chance of a NR200 review in the future? Interested to know your thoughts on it
Love the video as always, but am I the only one that hears the weirdly irritating hissing/static noise coming through? It almost sounds like a second microphone was recording in a "quiet room" with the gain turned up high. Thought it was my headphones or tablet at first but I hear it on 2x IEMs, 2x earphones, 1x on-ear headphone, and 2x over-ear headphones all on 2 mobile devices, a PC, and a streaming device
Any plans for a STRIX RTX 3080 review, Steve? If you could get your hands on one. I know I shouldn't be picky when it comes to 3000 series cards and get what's available, but I'm torn between the STRIX and EVGA's FTW3 or XC3
Thanks, i was going with ASUS 3fan if i couldn't get a founders edition 3080 or 3070.So many choices "in the 800 and below" when Navi card drop. :)
Hey GN! Really loving all the gpu breakdowns recently. Also is there any chance of a Lian Li Galahad review in the next few weeks?
No
When the new AMD GPUs come out, please please please do some benchmarking with RTX vs the AMD equivalent, with and without a Zen3 CPU so we can see how the AMD card performs without the SMART capabilities!
he can just turn off sma and still use the faster zen3 cpus to eliminate every possible cpu bottleneck
