Love how he can take a totally freaky microtonal drunken pitch wobble effect pedal and make it sound perfectly natural in a super mellow beautiful jazz context. His decades of musical wisdom show in every move he makes, and keep surprise in the mix.
This is so beautiful. When he started playing something changed in my whole body and I think the Beauty of this marvelous music broke into my mind. Thank you, Master.
I've seen Scofield live a few times and met him too. My favourite living guitarist and it's been that way since I heard him with Miles in the eighties.
I love Scofield. His playing has inspired me beyond what anyone can understand. Sco is Amazing. He is one of the few I would declare to be the GOAT at guitar.
dear john. may the masterplan give us your longest life ever. your music is guidance and prayer for all of us not to loose us in speed and to search god in music heart and soil
I remember back in Downbeat or some music magazine it was a roundtable with Scofield, Abercrombie, Metheny and some other fusion guitarist. They all said they had to teach privatel just to survive that was another bubble popped of mine. The first was when I started gigging with famous sideman for $50 a night. POP!!! Then I joined the Cartel. ( It wasn't music but boy did I make 💵 money.
There were times, we were hunting any reconding, John is playing chords on - back around the mid '80-s, in Hungary. But there were no results as far as I could remember... although I'd even seen him live in Warsaw Jazz Jamboree... in 1987, ( if I remember right ). Don't get me wrong, it was more like a special fan club. ... And here we go... and after the piano I learned some guitar, and I just don't feel like getting into chords too deeply. Well, piano is there for me for this purpose, so I can use guitar more like a solo instrument. ... Maybe some day I'll change my mind... :)
You can buy his last album in wich he plays solo like here (the one with dog on the beach) it is very good too and there is certainly a method on cliquing on the telecharg button for the one here ! Yes it is a very good gig here.
Each time I hear his solos I have a feeling there is this good old friend telling me a story. Unpretentious, raw and deeply humain. For me, he's the best music storyteller. Brilliant, inspiring musician. Thank you, Mr.Scofield.
When something brings you joy and relieves you from worries and sorrow, in Sweden there is a saying; it is a "conditioner for the soul" ("balsam för själen"). Scofield's playing is just that.
I recently went to see him in Noto, Sicily, and I honestly felt ripped off. I didn't just pay €28 to see a great guitarist just playing like he was in the privacy of his room, not showing his true talent when he is playing in a band. Ahhh, by the way, in the middle of the performance, he confesses that he ran out of his creativity "I don't know what to play for you." If you want to waste your money...go If I’d known what it was about, I wouldn’t have gone. PD He used loopers very well.
I must have seen Sco 3 or 4 times growing up. In an era where guitarists are playing pyrotechnics, polyrhythms and heavy conceptual ideas, John is playing the most laid back, blues-based personal language and it still sounds so fresh and relevant.
Totally agree !!!! At that time I used to listen to Pat Metheny, Mike Stern and Scofield. From Pat we had the melodic jazz phrasing and amazing musical structure. ( let’s not forget the standard albums which are incredible ), Mike Stern had this rock feeling that all of us needed in a jazz guitar player. Also I believe he did one of the great compositions in terms of ballads ( like “before you go” which has amazing chord progressions on it) and Scofield that was a plug and play guitar player with awesome weird grooves and a totally different approach on his melodic lines. It was hard to “copy” him. He is unique!!! A go go is my favorite album :-)))
I am but a lowly amateur player, but watching this somehow makes me think that I can plug in, fire up my looper pedal, and make something that gives me joy. It is all about having fun, after all.
John is not only a huge inspiration for us who try to be musicians. He is also such a kind person with no ego at all. The human behind the instrument is a big part of the influence.
Incredible sense of intimacy in John's performance...a privilege to watch. A man in complete command of his instrument simply doing what he does best - like being present at a 1-1 masterclass.
The first time I saw you was in 1981 (I think) in Amsterdam, I went to see another guitar player. You, Steven Swallow and Adam Nussbaum, I was flabbergasted. And since then, you have been the one to listen to. This was again a thing of beauty. Thanks, Sco love you
Call me a late comer to the Scofield fan club. All credit to Dennis Chambers for taking me here - if you've heard his live recording with Sco on 'Loud Jazz', you'll know exactly what I'm gushing about. The more I listen to Scofield, the more I appreciate that unique sound of his guitar and the way he speaks with every note.
John Scofield's kind of playing is so unique. You'll recognize his sound/style of playing instantly if you're open to it. Still love his sound within so many musical genres for so many years. Lots of respect John 🙏
It's all there: elastic, loosey-goosey-yet-in-the-pocket time feel; greasy, bluesy inflections; huge personal vocabulary grounded in a variety of styles of music and decades of study/performance... Love this guy, been listening to him since the 70's(Enja records, etc.) He's the real deal. Thanks for the music, Sco. Stay healthy and keep creating that sonic magic! ETA Love the way he uses the looper and other effects pedals in this performance.
Totally agree with you. I've seen him live once in Athens (Greece). One of the very few musicians that changed my perspective and approach on the guitar. By the way...any ideas on what unit he's using occasionally for that modulated effect?
@@dramanovel Regarding the modulating effect: I am not sure. I haven't watched the interview that accompanies this performance; maybe he talks about it there. Or, perhaps there is a recent(2022) Scofield "rig rundown" on RUclips that shows his current pedal set-up for his solo performances...
I never really noticed before but John doesn’t vibrato at the top of his bends. He just lets them stick out like a sore thumb. Fing genius. When that intense chorus comes in it’s like his dirty little rascal character
men... the end of the mrs. scofield is too much to handle, seriously, propper musicianship, scofield knows exactly what to express in music pure genius.
I just saw him at the capital theater in NY! I was surprised as I didn't knoiw he was the opening act for John Mcglaughlin & Zakir! Astonishing and even tempered player !!!
I feel like with age and experience the guitar faces just get better and more expressive.. at some point I stopped wating his hands n just look at his face
Thank you!!! Huge fan from the early 1990's of Sco, here. the sound ,the choice of tunes, the vibes, the after performance shot of the city...fantastic job! THANK YOU!!!!!
An absolute giant with genius phrasing, timing, tone, taste and feel. A great showcase how intelligent and subtle electric guitar can be. One of a kind - Master!
Was just thinking the same thing. I caught him in some intimate venues in the 90s with MMW and some other jam band adjacent acts. I didn't actually know what a treat some of these artists were, as I was so young. Charlie Hunter comes to mind from that scene as well
@@omerocampos969 Ha, I went back to listen again. Yes, an interesting rendition on his part and with a very identifiable Scofield sound. I bet Glen Campbell would appreciate the love Scofield put into this song.

"totally freaky microtonal drunken pitch wobble effect pedal" would be a great name for a band 🤣

Holy cow this was good
Waited my whole life to hear Scofield play on the neck pickup. Still sounds the same as his bridge pickup.
The first thing i look was his pickup selector and thinking is the neck but sound like twangy bridge.
He plays right hand near the bridge, you get that sound on every pickup you select.
LMFAO. Patrick Low for the win ;)
Neck-, belly- or footpickup... the secret why this man sounds like he does (and like nobody else) is hidden inside of him anyway ;-)
@@rasjavita It seems that he is using the Ibanez Trisound Switch that's on some of the Ibanez AS Models. Check it out.
