How to deal with rude, cold, arrogant doctors when you’re the patient. That’s what I would like to know too. I’ve witnessed so many incidents of doctors talking in a sarcastic way to disabled people, I’m disappointed and frankly lost hope.
I love these tips! Another idea when speaking with Administration about this: we hear more and more about how important it is to "manage up", and say good things about each other. But when Doctors (or any staff) get mad and throw tantrums that is definitely "managing down" and is not going to make the patient feel safe or that they are receiving competent care, and there goes the Patient Satisfaction Scores. (Wow, did I just find a way to use HCAHPS for good?)
Thanks so much Robb! You're right...when providers treat others with condescension and cruelty, it creates an unsafe environment for patients. Why? Because employees don't feel safe speaking up.
'The culture of any organisation is shaped by the worst behaviour the leader is willing to tolerate' Great to see leaders stepping up to support their nurses
Thank you for posting this video. I am an ER nurse and have overcome some hostile work situations involving an MD that pulls her new nurses through the ringer.
Glad you liked it! I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with that. It's baffling how people can be so kind and compassionate to their patients but so cruel to their co-workers.
Hello, and Thank You for having this issue discussed. I am not a nurse but I work as a technician assistanting the doctors. I had an issue with a doctor and my response was to argue back. I never thought about putting on the breaks and saying "hey this is not okay". I will have to try that next time. I'll let you know how it worked out.
I have see physicians throw charts, wadded up paper at nurses. I have been hung up on, cursed out and bullied by physicians. A doctor where I worked had an affair with an administrative secretary. She was single, he was married and about 15 years older. She was fired. He became chief of staff not a year later. Double standard
Seriously, this video is an angel sent from God and I’m not religious! lol I actually said the SAME words. A doctor just “ripped me a new one” lol I’ve subscribed and I will listen to your advice!
There is an Infectious disease female doctor at doctors hospital that is a nightmare. I had the pleasure of reporting her today. The way she spoke to me today....crazy!!!!! Heck nah.
Listen residents have very limited time sometimes. Sometimes an attending pops up and the resident might quickly need to cut the call if it's not urgent. Sometimes he has blood on his hands or iodine. Sometimes he gets called to the OR and answers ur phone call while wearing his scrubs and as soon as he realizes that ur matter can be postponed he quickly tries to finish the call to get to OR. Sometimes he's writing orders, doing a dressing, has a million checklist to go through. Sometimes he is on postcall and haven't had a good sleep. Don't take it seriously when they do that. Ask them why they did that... And ask them nicely... 99% of the time you'll find that they have a reason.
Report him. If he isn't listening when you are calling about a concern for your patients, report him to your charge nurse or the medical director over him.

Doctors try to treat a lot of their patients like they were kids at high school. Solution - Call them out for their pathetic sad act behaviour, have a hidden camera filming it and make an official complaint, taking it to the highest possible levels. I got in touch with my local MP, backed up with documentation proof and got one of them sacked from his job. Sweet.... Got a teacher sacked when I was at college as well. Sweet....

Me too. That's how I stumbled upon this video, lol. I actually searched how to handle rude, dismissive doctors.
Get a hidden camera and take it to the highest possible level. I got one sacked.
I'm with you on this -- Renee -- could you address this issue for how patients can find their voice to self advocate. thanks.
Oh absolutely! My mother in laws doctor was so rude with her I literally stepped out of the room because I was about to punch him. Sickening!

Yes yes!! Just say, "The way you're talking to me right now is not okay." You deserved to be talked to in a respectful manner - especially at work!
