@Ben Du Bois It was a play on words as there is a drink called a "White Russian" and Dr. Mike is Russian. So when she said she can really do with a tall white Russian she could have meant either the drink or Dr. Mike. :p
when i was in the hospital the nurses were so amazing. i was in after a suicide attempt and my nurses and security guards would talk to me when i couldn’t sleep, offer water, food, coloring books just like i was their child. it was those small things that started my recovery. i cant thank them enough. my goal is to become a nurse and help others just like they helped me
hey im really sorry to hear you’ve been in a dark place like that. please know you’re loved and appreciated. i’m so happy to hear that you were treated well. please know you matter to this world and i’m rooting for u in ur journey to becoming a nurse!!! you and your work are so important!! i hope you’re doing well. i know recovery isn’t always easy, so if you ever need to reach out to someone, u can visit mentalhealth.carrd.co ^it has a number of hotlines/textlines/chatlines that may be helpful. I'm a nursing student too! Unfortunately, I've had mostly bad experiences with docs and residents but watching videos from Dr. Mike and Siobhan (ViolinMD) make me so hopeful that we are going to have more doctors that are going to actually be team players. Healthcare is a team effort between everyone involved, including CNAs, nutrition staff, and countless others that are all involved in patient care. Good luck with nursing school if you haven't finished already! You got this!
Mr. & Mrs Smith : I know that the pain of a gallbladder attack can be excruciating!!! I had my first attack when I was in my second trimester of pregnancy. Being a military spouse, I went to the base hospital because the pain had me doubled over. When my nurse there tried to explain to the doctor that my symptoms seemed to indicate a gallbladder attack, he kept saying it was probably an ectopic pregnancy or appendicitis (even tough I not longer had an appendix!!). I knew it wasn’t an ectopic because since I worked in Labor and Delivery (RN) at the off base hospital, we had used the fetoscope to hear the heartbeat (this was before fetal monitor machines, EFMs). That doctor ignored the nurse and my classic gallbladder attack symptoms and did the painful procedure used back then to check for ectopics. Needless to say, it wasn’t an ectopic pregnancy and I was admitted, then I had a nasogastric tube put in and it was connected to a low intermittent suction machine (not fun at all) plus IVs in each arm for the antibiotics.
@@nancyyhow there are two actually. The one I was talking about is called 'Betty's Diagnose' and three weeks ago a new series came out. It's called 'In aller Freundschaft: Die Krankenschwestern' I like that one even more than the other one😊 Are you German too?
And still it's one of the worst jobs in terms of payment and general working conditions. Nurses all over Germany have been on strike the past two years demanding not even more money but more colleagues as most hospitals run regularly on minimum coverage (meaning at times there is just one nurse covering a whole station without help). Soooooo yeah.
I started school for nursing because I was raised in a rural, very economically depressed area. The only careers I saw growing up were in healthcare. I didn't know anything else was out there. I just knew I wanted an education and a career and nursing seemed like the only option. Let's just say I'm glad I got out before I even got in. I realized very early that my reason for choosing nursing was a very bad one and I would have been absolutely miserable as a nurse. I became a scientist instead- definitely the right choice! I can't imagine doing anything else.

Thank you for the tip. It was easy to find your coach. I did my due diligence before scheduling a phone call with him, and he seems highly proficient based on his résumé. FYI: Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment..
I’m a pharmacist, and sadly we are looked down upon.. and so is nurses, people in my society only look up to doctors and underestimate the hardships nurses and pharmacists go through to become what we are.
MahaDelRey I really appreciate pharmacists a lot. I am a person who gets sivk so frequently and pharmacists are so nice about what to use with other medications or even about how to properly use them. thank you for doing such an awesome job!
katerinafaith you're a beautiful person inside out! Your comment is so kind and really brightened my day. You deserve all the best 💜 such an awesome person you are 😎
My mom is a nurse and has been for 30+ years. She saw a doctor not knowing how to do a procedure properly a few months ago. She stopped him and reported him. It was really fun because no one really took her seriously and she had 20~ years of experience over the people she had to report to about the incident :))))
It usually isn’t a pleasant experience when having to report an incident like she did. When I had to report an incident that really was a big ‘NO-NO’ where I worked, the doctor was not ever even a bit pleasant to me after that (he was reprimanded and he actively tried to get me fired). I had made sure to go through the proper channels as per hospital protocol.
I would have listen to anyone with that amount of knowledge since they have been through it. For example when I was was new to truck driving I asked my employer to team me up with someone knew what they where doing and i was teamed up with a trucker that had 50+ years of experience. Even if it was for a short time I learned from him.
J Rick I can delete comments too buddy, it just shows who you really are. Calling someone a faggot and then getting called out on it and deleting it. That's real low. I'm done giving you any of my time bc all you want to is attention. Have a good day
Always, we have doctors that when we see them, we know is going to be a great day! Even if the ed goes down on fire, it is already better because we work as a team
Nurses low-key do 98% of the front lines. As someone who has both been admitted to and seen loved ones in the hospital, nurses are intense. They do a lot of the messy stuff that people don't always notice.
And most people don't get that this job is both physically and mentally intense. When I started, I remember having a good cry when I came home after my first death - and that after a 10h shift and having to be in the hospital again within the next 12h. It's just messy sometimes.
Aqua Li : I certainly do emphasize with you. Back in the 1970s when I first started out as a new RN working in a very small hospital, I stayed busy from the time I clocked in (time cards back then) till I left (usually late so that I could finish all the necessary paperwork). I was usually the only RN for the whole place (evening and night shifts) that meant not only patient care but also all of the respiratory and physical therapy treatments. I learned so much though as it was a job where I would either ‘sink or swim’!! Orientation back then was only two weeks at that hospital and after four months I moved to another state.
What I find very disturbing is when I hear people in my field (restauration) whine about the price of the healthcare system and the idea of paying people to "scam" patients with "fake" medicine. I'm in france btw so even the price argument makes me cringe VERY hard. And they spit on the whole healthcare units as a whole for just misunderstanding the field and the work that gets done there. While whining about clients that whine when they don't understand that a good meal takes time to prepare. It kills me every single fucking time. Some cooks should just talk to pans and stfu when it comes to social interactions really.
@@siali8683 My first job was a Med/Surg unit in a city hospital. I cried for six months straight. I thought I was having a stroke a few times. Started drinking coffee too. Lol I technically got off at 3:30pm but didn’t leave sometimes til 5pm. Thank god I lived near by. My supervisor was the best thing that happened to me. She encouraged me to stay. She said I’d learn a lot plus after my experience I could work in any setting, she was right. I suffered but I made it! God bless her!
Thank you for that! We really don't get the gratitude that we deserve. But when you lose a patient and the family hugs you tight, you know that you have made a difference and it isn't all for nothing. As an ICU nurse for 10 years, I have had my share of threats, guns pulled on me, bomb threats, punches, pushes, etc. But I have also had my share of amazing and meaningful days. Days where I laugh, cry, save a life, help a suicidal patient, make a patient laugh who is depressed, joke around and most of all love my day. Doctors like you are what make our job easier and more fulfilling. I love being my doctors right hand man, we are a team and it makes it more special when we function like one. ❤❤❤❤
Kaitlin, when my grandpa died after being on palative care for two days, his icu nurse met my family by the elevator as we left to show her condolences and support. That hug was very meaningful. So much love for her and nurses. Thanks for all you do. It's not easy.
Are you serious? I can't even imagine. My husband is fine now but he was VERY ill some years back. He's now an amputee because the illness caused him to lose his leg. While the doctors did help him tremendously, he credits the nurses for saving his life. Had they not been there doing the phenomenal job they did, we very likely would have lost him. I love nurses and will always be grateful to them.
I have been a nurse all my life and nursing is a hard job. Both physically and emotionally. It is hard on your body. Thank you doctor Mike for telling people about nurses
I'm a doctor too and getting along with the nurses is the key to the job. I see some doctors who are mean to nurses, which isn't exactly teamworking. Nursing is a tough job, they do so much for the patients when doctors aren't around
Lava Yuki : thank you so much for your understanding and professional courtesy.‼️ I can say from my personal experiences working as a hospital nurse, that at least the abysmal verbal and unnecessary physical contact received back in the 1970 and early 1980s, is no longer tolerated by administration and other medical professionals.
I definitely agree about what you said about nurses. My grandfather was in hospital for two months because of a big tumour in his throat. Yesterday he passed away from pneumonia at the age of 86. Anyways your right about the nurses. When he was in hospital he saw a doctor for about 15 minutes each morning. Everything else was nurses. Since this got so many likes I’m going to write some things I know the nurses did. Every time he clicked the call button they came, when he wanted to move from his chair to his bed they helped him, when he wanted to go to the bathroom they unhooked all his machines. They checked up on him hourly, cleaned out his tracheotomy, brought him for walks around the hospital which required two nurses, the did that even when their was no order from the doctors to do so. They also organized with the help of others for him to go home for a day. He loved it. I am forever thankful for those nurses at Muskoka Algonquin Health Centre.
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my GrandPa on march 7th, I cant believe how much I miss him(( You get used to loss but you really miss then to be there
Your message is so important! Nurses need to be so much more respected and appreciated! Every time I‘ve been to a hospital they were the ones who stayed with me, who calmed me, who were unbelievably caring and who explained everything to me with such sweet patience! Sending all the love out to those strong and amazing women and men! 💕✨
Chris Kearns I am really really sorry to hear that 😔 It was one nurse who took adventage of his/her position and there‘s no excuse for that. But there are still thousands and thousands of nurses out there with a kind and caring heart!
Chris Kearns I don‘t believe that. Surely there will allways be that one person who does but in general becoming a nurse and working as a nurse needs so much selflessness and passion for what you‘re doing and so much empathy and kindness towards the patients and so much thinking and knowledge that someone does not go threw all this to get rewarded by treating that one rich patient. I have seen it with my grandma, I am seeing it with my aunt and I saw it with all the different nurses that I have met threw my hospital journeys so far.
Thank you Mike for being such a bright doctor! Спасибо Миша, моя семья с удовольствием смотрим ваши передачи! Спасибо за поддержку медсестёр! Мы уважаем вас за ваш ум, и ваше доброе сердце! Всего самого наилучшего вам и вашему папе!
When I was considering becoming a nurse I asked my friend who works nights on a hospice floor in a large hospital because i knew shed give it to me straight. She said “this job is hard as hell and you will cry and struggle, but it’s so rewarding and i love it and i know you would be good at it.” I graduated december 2021 and i will celebrate my graduation from nursing residency on a surgical floor next month. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling job.
My mom is a retired nurse!! My dad is a retired doctor! Mom never got the recognition she deserved!! She’s the best. Nurses are the best. Nurses as you have said Mike, are the back bone of the hospital!
Hey doctor Mike. I'm a 3rd year medical student and I just started my clinical rotations. It's quite tough but I'm enjoying this portion so much more than my basic sciences. Your videos and your outlook on the field is a real motivation. So I'd like to say thank you for the great content you're putting out ❤️ Love from Sri Lanka
When you thought you were already in love with Michael and then he acts like the doctor you wish you worked with! Become an OB let's work together 😅 #You'reMyFavDoc
As a nurse I appreciate you always bringing light to how much we actually do. I work in intensive care and the comment “ your just a nurse” really drives me nuts. Like you said until someone has a loved one in our care they don’t understand. Thank you for all you do, another great video 😊
Clancywiggum97 thank you I appreciate the kind words. But as they said together we save lives. It doesn’t just stop at doctors and nurses there are so many people in the healthcare team.
I literally almost cried watching this video.🤦🏽♀️To hear a doctor say we catch their mistakes. Omg! I’ve never seen an appreciative doctor. To be honest it’s really doctors who’ve been in practice for eons who truly understand and appreciate nurses. Thank you for the recognition.❤️
I wrecked my motorcycle recently. Outside of the doctors and NP/PAs in the ER and OR, 99% of my time was with RNs and LPNs. The most amazing, educated, kind, and dedicated people. Go nurses! I saw doctors in the ICU and recovery ward never, only in the OR or for 3 seconds pre/post op. Seeing "PT was WTC, alert, kind, and pleasant" in my notes meant they saw how much I respected them (it was note worthy!). Nurses of all levels are underrated and wrote 98% of my notes and were just there for me. I thank all of you! *oh, shout out to Nurse Bill who was there as I cried in pain trying to stand for the first time post accident. The most kind and empathetic person who was just encouraging the whole way. And Nurse Karen for being my rock.
As a nursing student this advice is great! I fell in love with the career because I spent my summers volunteering in a nursing home. I've been a patient as well and I loved the nurse I had when I was in the hospital sweetest lady I've ever met.
Thewindgamer Hi ! Thank you ! I would help bring them food from the cafeteria and would do whatever the nurse would put me to do ! Sometimes they’d let us read with them or do puzzles !
I also volunteered at our local nursing home when I was a teen (in the 1960s). They knew that I was going to go to become a nurse so they taught me about how nurses worked. I was allowed to help patients with bed baths, fed those who could not do it by themselves, and did whatever they allowed me to do. I was grateful for this as it helped me later to be able to adjust to the frantic pace of nursing a bit better than those who had no hands on experience at all.
My mom is a nurse and I can never be one, but hearing stories from her friends and watching how much she is and so many nurses work is amazing. I tease and joke with her about how much you the hospital love my mom more then me and my family. That being said can I have my mom back now she work five 12 hours shifts and is tired.
Doctor Mike : being a retired nurse, I understood the ‘my nurses’ comment and it is appreciated!!! It would have been wonderful to have had more doctors show such respectful professional curtesy back in the 1970s and into the 1980s. Back then there was a joke (now an old joke). Dr. Mike, what is the difference between God and a doctor?? Answer: God doesn’t think that he is a doctor.
Love this, Dr. Mike. Nurses are *SUCH* a critical part of everything we do in medicine. When I was a junior resident, I had some rough shifts in our cardiac surgery ICU - where many of our patients are on the brink of total cardiovascular collapse (i.e. "crashing") - and I can honestly say that on more than one occasion, it was the quick thinking of a critical care nurse that saved our patient's life.
I'm a dual licensed nurse (PH and US). I'm also a certified Nephrology nurse in my country and I train nurses who want to specialize in hemodialysis. Thank you for dedicating this video to us. I really appreciate it a lot. This pandemic gave us the opportunity to people see how valuable our work is. 🥰
Dr Mike coming from a nurse for 15 years this meant the world to me! I smiled the whole time. Thanks so much for your appreciation of us!!! ❤️ we also love our doctors!! Thank you!
Hello Rn Tn! I would love to get into the nursing field. How do I go about gaining experience and having a better insight of the nursing field before applying for nursing school? Thank you for your time and everything you do!
livepassionately247 Well thank you. And I would definitely see if you have a “teaching hospital” in your area. Ones that train residents. They are much more likely to let you shadow a nurse for a shift. If there’s a certain field you think you would be interested in ask that manager. I have never seen them turn someone down wanting to watch and get a feel for it bc school isn’t easy and no one wants you wasting your time if you get in there and don’t like it! I would also read on some websites “there’s a ton” about nurses experiences good and bad. I picked nursing to begin with well my mother and grandmother are nurses and also like he said the stability, the options, etc. my mom loves geriatrics. love labor and delivery. And have done travel nursing. Got to see Hawaii. There are so many options. You can do insurance and be at a desk or trauma and have fun shot would patients. Sounds like an easy question but trying to explain I feel like I’m not answering you the way I would like to. My first thing is think of what you would be interested in and then find a teaching hospital that will let you shadow. I love having people shadow and teaching so I hope you def do so and thank you so much for asking. And I’ll check back see if there’s anything else I can help you with. Give you my twitter. Or whatever else I can do to help. Ty Again! Sorry meant I love labor and delivery would t let me edit for some reason but got into it bc family my mom and I graduated together lol. But stayed for the love of patients and coworkers!!! So don’t be discouraged if don’t like one field you thought you would there are hundreds out there. Like o said feel free anytime to contact or I can give you my twitter.
Cardi B outsoldT, outrelevantedT, outtalentedT I work at a nursing home and sadly, yes there are some doctors that are rude to any staff not just nurse.
Thank you so much, Rn Tn! I have looked into neonatal nursing; labor and delivery is currently striking my interest. Any field that involves babies and young children are on my radar. I will search for a teaching hospital in my area. I don't have a twitter account therefore I will reach out to you on this comment thread. Thank you again!!
When I was the sickest I'd ever been, just woke up from a 7 day induced coma, one of the nurses that worked with me put off her lunch to help me hobble to the nurses showers. She got a shower chair for me, and those mini shampoos, so I could have a real shower. I felt so gross and demoralized when I woke up and that shower made me feel so much better. It pushed me to work harder when the PT came and feel like I could have friends visit which made me feel even stronger. All hail nurses, that one small act of kindness totally turned around my recovery
❤❤❤I’m a retired RN with 44 years in the career. You either love it and stay with it or you hate it and get the heck out!! I loved it. And I miss it so much! I have been blessed and honored to have been able to serve in the capacity of being an RN. I believe it is indeed a noble profession. I didn’t choose it, God chose it for my life and I am grateful for that! I think people are much more aware of what we do since Covid came along. It was a big eye opener. Thank you for posting this. ❤❤❤
I'm a Critical Care (ICU and Emergency) Nurse and now a Midwife too. NURSING is an awesome profession and is truly rewarding each and every day. Thank you for this video Doctor Mike x Sending you love from Sydney, Australia
@@merinachai813 hi merina, depends what you want to do with your career. if you're just going to work in the BU, SCN or Maternity, you dont need to be a RN. However if you want to go into flight nursing or similar, its handy to have the dual qualification
Ah yes, where all the Kiwi's and Brits move to get better pay and working conditions. Honestly, Nurses are underpaid, understaffed and work awfully long shifts. I hope it's not too bad where you work.
Nurses have always been my heroes ever since i went through chemo/cancer treatment. They deserve so much, they are the most amazing and compassionate people. I love them all! 🥰❤❤
There was actually a Grey’s Anatomy episode where the nurses were on strike and talk about some doctors not appreciating them. It gave a somewhat good light onto how important nurses actually are and how the hospital can’t function without them.
HaMaa you'll learn alot More than you can bargain for 😜 It will change you as a person... In a good way 😝 Enjoy the challenge and remember that you can do it, when it does get hard 😘
I am a nurse and a thoroughly approve this message! 🙋🏽 Thank you for this appreciation video, I know I appreciate working with Doctors like yourself who value us as much as we value them! Happy National Nurses Week to all the nurses out there!! 🏥❤️ Treat yourself to a new pair of shoes this week maybe?! 😜
as a nurse, i see how wholistic the career of nursing is. just last night i was jumping between two rooms where i had to console a sobbing patient who was dying and calm an angry confused patient. nursing takes so much compassion and patience. not to mention forward thinking, being able to look at the big picture, and pay attention to little details about your patients.
I work as an EMT, and delivering patients to hospitals, I see nurses get treated so poorly sometimes. Even by people who I work alongside with. I always try my best to thank a nurse when the opportunity arises. Thank you so much for this video! I hope nurses feel much more appreciated because of you! Also, you're sooo cute
Rebekah Drews i feel like there is this underlying culture of friction between nurses and EMTs and that makes me so upset. We cant do our jobs without the entire team. YOU GUYS AMAZE ME! And you certainly arent compensated enough for your extremely important and stressful job!!
Great! Nurses are mostly underrated (for example Grey's Anatomy) but they have such an important Job, thanks for this video! P.S.: You've got a new subscriber :)
MORE PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS! I'm in nursing school currently and I definitely think that nurses do not get the credit that they deserve! Thanks Dr. Mike! :)
My mom is a nurse. & I appreciate this video so much. Nurses don't get enough credit. She works so hard and I could not be more proud to have her as a mother.
Love seeing the rapport you have with the nurses you work with! I’m a nurse and it really does take a whole team to care for people. Which is why I also hate the medical shows that show doctors doing it all lol. Happy nurses week to all the amazing nurses out there!
Plus, right before pinning I received a job offer to be a float nurse. There are so many changes about to happen in my life, but I could not be more excited. I love that the timing of it was right before nurses week too, because it helps to emphasise how important the field I'm entering is and how much of a difference I can make.
The nurses at the hospice that took care of my sister when she was dying were the kindest, most amazing people I've ever met. I would not have gotten through that situation without their support.
FeñaMusic keep that attitude and your years as a doctor will be much easier. Always befriend the nurses, always, and they'll help you where they can, piss them off and your life will be a living hell. Trust me I'm a nurse lol. Seriously, good luck with your career, you have a great attitude, you'll go far.
Hey Dr.Mike! Love the recognition of Nurses Week. I am a Lab Tech and would love to see you do a video about the multifaceted aspects of the ancillary services. Not enough people know what else is out there besides being a doctor or nurse! We’re all a part of the medical team and I would love to hear what some of your experiences are with maintaining those relationships. Take Care!
Sizzlik, no problem! Yes essentially we test bodily fluids for a wide range of things which in turn, provides possible diagnosis and antibiotic treatments when needed. Labs in lager hospitals typically are ran in separate sections by different people in: Chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, blood bank, histology, shipping, and processing, just to name the bulk. It requires us to maintain equipment as well as ensuring specimen integrity. There are many requirements for different tests. I like to spread as much knowledge as I can because it’s not as simple as it looks at face value. A lot of frustration comes from miscommunication or lack of explanation. If you work in the medical field, we are usually very nice and have no problem helping you out if you ask!Truthfully, there is a lot of details that goes into testing so I can’t really type it all out! Hope that helps a little though!
I know most of the people in the medical field are really helpfull and nice. And you answered my question, thank you =) What lab field do you work in, if i may ask? (And i know its uncalled for..but you are very beautifull..not a flirt, just a compliment)
Thats pretty impressive..i like the field of micro biology (not that i know much about it)..all this little wonders on microscopic level and how different cells interact with each other..its facinating. Study a parasite..how it works..what to do against or do with it..future needs people like you. Big thumbs up for your field of work =)
Nurses are incredible!! Having been hospitalized multiple times has left me with an unending gratitude for them. They are with you all day, comforting you, assisting you, being endlessly patient, and so much more! My sister is in nursing school and doing clinicals and it is not easy! They work hard and they care so much. It's incredible and they are so under praised. Much love to all the nurses out there!!
I've been an RN for too long, now I'm in NP school. Nursing is an a rewarding career and never have I worried about not having a job. The issues w it these days are : the pay -a new grad should not make near the same as a RN w 20 years of experience. Experience counts. New grads staffing ERs with already not enough staff. Hospitals have became a business, not a healthcare facility. Same for long term care facilities. Look at cases coming out of those places. Nice video. Though! Thank you!
Ers just arent worth it for most experienced nurses. After a few years, most move on with “that was fun but i want a break” and never come back. Im starting as an RN in my ED in 3 months. where Ive been security forever. I am fearful but looking foward to new experiences and learning. Cause god knows nursing school didnt teach us enough.
I just finished my last (and long) clinical before starting finals tomorrow! Thanks for brightening my day Dr. Mike! I would be honored to work along side an amazing doctor like you! 😊
Congrats, it will soon be over. Keep studying, even long after graduation and working as a nurse. Learn something every day, improve your skills, self identify weaknesses and strengthen them. Medscape is a great free resource to learn. I have all my staff do monthly CEUs to become ever sharper. Then comes the day that you save your first patient and you know you are in the right profession.
Most nursing schools in Germany require that you complete a 6-8 week internship before applying to nursing school so you get an in depth look at what you can expect from the career. (There is also a requirement for doctors during med school to complete a nursing internship to help them appreciate everything nurses do, even though this is unfortunately rarely the case. Both from doctors side and from nurses side who tend to just have the med school interns do all the unwanted jobs instead of showing them what being a nurse is all about.)
Ive been in my profession as a nurse for 2 years now. We dont get credit we are underrated most of the time we are not valued for many. But i am not regretting becoming a nurse bec its in this profession that i trully love what i do even if its really tiring. Its true that we even opt to take a break during holidays and instwad of spending time with the family we are spending time with the strangers. I hope one day we are being valued because in this job. Thank yiu so much doctor mike for recognizing our worth! You are trully an amzing person!
When I was a student nurse, I tried to talk to one of the doctors at a small country hospital about his patient whom I ha reason to believe was experiencing a slow GI bleed which had the capacity to become a hemorrhage and needed to have an endoscopy to investigate and was shut down based on my being only a student and whats more, just a nurse. The patient was slowly dropping their pressure, was experiencing abdominal pain, signs of shock and melina. Also, his emises had evidence of hemoglobin. Latter that day his pressure dropped massively, his abdomen became distended and he had to be rushed to the nearest major city for emergency surgery. It was very frustrating to me even then not to be taken seriously in spite of the numbers and the data on the basis that I am just a nurse. I don't know if that patient is still alive today. From the moment I had taken a days worth of vitals on him, I knew his thermodynamic status was poor and that that hospital was not equipped to deal with it should he crash. and he did. that equals wasted resources, That patient should have been transported sooner so that he would be treated sooner. It wasn't until he crashed that the doctor saw fit to do something. If a nurse comes to you and you're a doctor and they tell you they are worried for a patient and that's reflected in whatever data they can provide about their condition, for god's sake go and see the patient!!!! On the flip side, another time I was admitting a patient to rehab and taking their pulse and ECG, standard practice in a rehab ward. I noticed her radial pulse was highly irregular, as were her heart sounds. She was also talking loop diuretics and cardiac glycosides. Her legs were extremely odematous and her ECG showed non existent P waves, irregular QRS complexes and at least three PVCs. I took this ECG to her doctor and explained to them, their patients ECG was highly irregular, she's been on these drugs for some time with no effect so she was at risk of toxicity and I pointed out the PVCs. They listened and then without a word to my background, took the ECG paper and walked into her room. I found out latter that day the patient' dosages had been changed and she had had blood taken for therapeutic levels as well as a cardiac enzyme and FBE. I was astonished, that doctor actually listened to me despite my being a student nurse and in bringing it to his attention, its likely together we saved the patients life. I was exhilarated. I may be a nurse, but I live for those times I get to work closely and collaboratively with doctors because those are the times when I learn the most.
Love this video Dr. Mike! Thank you for acknowledging the often overlooked role that us nurses play in a patient's wellbeing. Some people do not realize the hard work and sacrifice/s nurses do in this field. Happy Nurses Week to all nurses out there!
My mother is a nurse and this video is truly needed. They are VERY underrated and need to be paid and treated better. Thank you, Dr. Mike, for respecting the nurses you work with and for treating them well.
I just came across this video. It’s really nice to see there are actually doctors out there who respect and value nurses as I work in an inner city hospital and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been yelled at and looked down on by a doctor because “I’m just a nurse” 😔
Thank you Dr. MIKE. It is also rewarding for us, nurses, to work with doctors who value and recognize our part in the health care team. You are an inspiration to the medical field. May your health and wellness tips reach a lot of people. =)
I work as a volunteer at a hospital near where I live and the nurses I work with are awesome and work hard but still make some time for a laugh. I love helping out and it definitely made me think if nursing or healthcare is my field.
Hey Dr. Mike, I love the fact that you have such respect for your nurses. I'm currently in school on the road to my nursing degree. I do however wish that others in the medical community could be recognized with the same level of importance. I work as a housekeeper at a nursing home. Housekeeping and maintenance staff within a medical facility to me, is part of The medical community. The language and attitudes towards those of us who aren't on the "clinical" side is to say the least offencive and heartbreaking. Sadly I myself was told in the nicest way possible that my role is equal to that of a slave with pay. People tend to forget that germs, viruses, and any number of infections are all around us, and we who clean help to keep us all safe. How can we help to change these attitudes? How do you view the housekeeping and maintenance staff within your facility?
Best decision I ever made going to nursing school for my BSN and I'm not stopping. Going on for my Masters, even with a family at home. Never stop learning!! You're right, gotta have a sense of humor :) love it!!
To every nurse that has left a positive comment, thank you! Unfortunately I've been reading (and watching) horror stories about the nursing field. I've been considering making a career switch to nursing for YEARS now and the internet has been really discourging that. There is a part of me that believes there is a silver lining and that it is worth it.
In ICU when my dad was dying it was the nurses that watched him 24/7, giving medication and general treatment, monitoring all his vitals, cleaning him up and maintaining his dignity and making us all laugh despite a tragic situation. They were the most empathetic, compassionate, amazing people I’ve ever met (along with midwives).
Talia Hunt : it is wonderful to hear your experiences, thank you for sharing. I chose maternity nursing though I did sometimes work in other areas. I certainly appreciate all the work skills of ICU/CCU nurses.
After 16 years in different profession I am due to qualify as a RN in September. Best think I have ever done. Such an amazing profession that makes real difference in so many peoples' lifes. Happy nurses week ❤
LOVED THE VIDEO!!!! My friend and I love your videos and always watch them the second they come out! You're so professional and genuine and we wish you lots of success!
You should watch the show The Resident. I believe there to be a nurse that is also one of the important characters in the show. One of the most prominent episode where she is shown caring is when she looks after a cancer patient. Although, any episode can really demonstrate her skills.
Nurses are amazing ! I spent a few months in the hospital. It was a scary and depressing time for me. I don’t think I would have gotten through it without the AMAZING nurses ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm an ER nurse. I 1000% agree with this video. People don't truly appreciate what we do everyday. I really wouldn't mind that doctors said thank you, just once would be enough
I'm my clinical time from what I saw techs, which many are EMTs working as techs, do the most busy work. running room to room to room. nurses over see the real care of the patients. they tell the techs what needs to get done. they tell the doctor important information. and they are the ones that fill in all the blanks. the scope of your tech makes a big difference. i.e. a paramedic the got a tech job can help the nurse by doing a lot more than an emt-b.
My mother is a nurse practitioner now, but was an RN for ten years before she went back to school for her Master's. She's incredible!! I always ask her first whether I should go to a doctor or not if I'm worried about my health. People who want to be nurses better love people though because you see many different kinds of people at their best AND worst.
As a nurse student, thank you.

Tall white Russian.... I love that nurse already :D
Yeah, she sounds like she'd be super fun to hang with. 😂
@Ben Du Bois It was a play on words as there is a drink called a "White Russian" and Dr. Mike is Russian. So when she said she can really do with a tall white Russian she could have meant either the drink or Dr. Mike. :p

In Germany we have a whole series about nurses. It really showes that they have a huge role in a hopital....
Which one?
@@nancyyhow there are two actually. The one I was talking about is called 'Betty's Diagnose' and three weeks ago a new series came out. It's called 'In aller Freundschaft: Die Krankenschwestern' I like that one even more than the other one😊
Are you German too?

I’m a pharm tech and I totally agree!
What procedure was it
I would have listen to anyone with that amount of knowledge since they have been through it. For example when I was was new to truck driving I asked my employer to team me up with someone knew what they where doing and i was teamed up with a trucker that had 50+ years of experience. Even if it was for a short time I learned from him.
So basically she is a snitch

Your message is so important! Nurses need to be so much more respected and appreciated!
Emma Niskanen so true
Chris Kearns I don‘t believe that. Surely there will allways be that one person who does but in general becoming a nurse and working as a nurse needs so much selflessness and passion for what you‘re doing and so much empathy and kindness towards the patients and so much thinking and knowledge that someone does not go threw all this to get rewarded by treating that one rich patient. I have seen it with my grandma, I am seeing it with my aunt and I saw it with all the different nurses that I have met threw my hospital journeys so far.

Nurses of all levels are underrated and wrote 98% of my notes and were just there for me. I thank all of you!

Hello Rn Tn! I would love to get into the nursing field. How do I go about gaining experience and having a better insight of the nursing field before applying for nursing school? Thank you for your time and everything you do!
livepassionately247
Well thank you.
And so sorry about delay. My 17 yo does ballet and had her last performance before she goes to college today. Bittersweet!

I love how he has a close relationship to each person he works with

Nurse's = *hidden* *Angels* 😇

I'm a Critical Care (ICU and Emergency) Nurse and now a Midwife too. NURSING is an awesome profession and is truly rewarding each and every day. Thank you for this video Doctor Mike x Sending you love from Sydney, Australia
Oh my gosh... Thanks for the like on my comment 😊
hey i’m from Nsw too. I’m doing my bachelors in midwifery, should i also study nursing or worry about that later? x
@@merinachai813 hi merina, depends what you want to do with your career. if you're just going to work in the BU, SCN or Maternity, you dont need to be a RN. However if you want to go into flight nursing or similar, its handy to have the dual qualification
Anna Baggins thanks so much, i’ll take that into account x
Ah yes, where all the Kiwi's and Brits move to get better pay and working conditions. Honestly, Nurses are underpaid, understaffed and work awfully long shifts. I hope it's not too bad where you work.
Nurses have always been my heroes ever since i went through chemo/cancer treatment. They deserve so much, they are the most amazing and compassionate people. I love them all! 🥰❤❤
Dr. Mike I absolutely love all of your videos, my mother is a nurse and I love that you are doing a nurse appreciation video.
Thank you Dr Mike. I'm a nurse and it is the hardest job, but most rewarding job! Thank you for the recognition! 💜💜😊
RachelBBeautyXo Nice
I'm not sure if I would be so naive to say that being a nurse is HARDER than being a doctor... Maybe the day to day work is.
JCB my sister is a Dr I didn't say being a dr wasn't hard either. But a dr working with nurses and see what we do, he sees it is hard, but worth it.
JCB and are you a dr or a nurse? If not you can't say which one is harder..
There was actually a Grey’s Anatomy episode where the nurses were on strike and talk about some doctors not appreciating them. It gave a somewhat good light onto how important nurses actually are and how the hospital can’t function without them.
One out of like a million episodes. Scrubs gave nurses more credit.
Living with a nurse has definitely changed my mind on everything
I see what you did there. That comment can go either way lol
He either has a nurse as his wife or he fell in love with nurse
Nurses fill the public with all sorts of false narratives
thanks doc , i am a nurse student and this video gave me a motivation 🌹🌹
HaMaa Good luck!!! I just finished mine, whoop whoop!
😘😘😘
thanks mate , and congratulation , for me i have to study 3 more years haha :D
HaMaa you'll learn alot
More than you can bargain for
😜
It will change you as a person... In a good way 😝
Enjoy the challenge and remember that you can do it, when it does get hard 😘
VSTF yeah you are right it actually already changed me , and thanks for your advice
I also have three more years!!! Yay!!
Definitely the most rewarding career to be in!!! Just seeing the patients smiling after helping them is something that keeps me going 😌
as a nurse, i see how wholistic the career of nursing is. just last night i was jumping between two rooms where i had to console a sobbing patient who was dying and calm an angry confused patient. nursing takes so much compassion and patience. not to mention forward thinking, being able to look at the big picture, and pay attention to little details about your patients.
EMT is another job that doesn't get enough recognition, thank you for what you do.
Great! Nurses are mostly underrated (for example Grey's Anatomy) but they have such an important Job, thanks for this video!
P.S.: You've got a new subscriber :)
Yeah! Nurses are mostly underrated but they have such an important Job
Can you please react to the first episode of "The resident" it's a great doctor show you will love it and keep up the good work
Doctor Worm ii
Sadly early years they had nurses, but Shonda ex them out 😡😒
Chicago Med does a pretty decent job of showing how important nurses are
MORE PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS! I'm in nursing school currently and I definitely think that nurses do not get the credit that they deserve! Thanks Dr. Mike! :)
Yep I agree, the more we can share this the better!
My mom is a nurse. & I appreciate this video so much. Nurses don't get enough credit. She works so hard and I could not be more proud to have her as a mother.
How do you know how harsh she works
What if Violin MD and Doctor Mike did a collab

Love seeing the rapport you have with the nurses you work with! I’m a nurse and it really does take a whole team to care for people. Which is why I also hate the medical shows that show doctors doing it all lol. Happy nurses week to all the amazing nurses out there!
Graduated with my BSN yesterday, great way to spend nurses week! Love this video and how much you appreciate nurses 💕
Oh man, congratulations!!!! That’s a huge step in your career :)
Congrats!
Plus, right before pinning I received a job offer to be a float nurse. There are so many changes about to happen in my life, but I could not be more excited. I love that the timing of it was right before nurses week too, because it helps to emphasise how important the field I'm entering is and how much of a difference I can make.
Congrats fellow new grad!
That’s amazing. Congrats 🍾🎉
The nurses at the hospice that took care of my sister when she was dying were the kindest, most amazing people I've ever met. I would not have gotten through that situation without their support.
I'm in medschool, and I think that your relationship with nurses is amazing, and it's how it SHOULD ALWAYS BE❤
FeñaMusic keep that attitude and your years as a doctor will be much easier.
Take Care!
Im sorry if i sound like an idiot..but what does a lab tech mostly do? Analysing blood, pee and poop to find out the problem and right medication?
And you answered my question, thank you =)
What lab field do you work in, if i may ask?
(And i know its uncalled for..but you are very beautifull..not a flirt, just a compliment)
Sizzlik thank you! I vary between Microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and parasitology. Sometimes fungal work but not as often.
Nice video. Though! Thank you!
This is a lot of the reason I left. The other, got burnt out doing too much and working too much. Let's not forget all the Dead.
Congrats, I just finished too. I start my nursing residency in July. Good luck with finals!
Hannah Marie pl
Hannah Marie odds are....you won’t. Most docs are older dicks
Home stretch! You’re almost there-good luck on the NCLEX!
I’m a CNA just starting Nursing School, and this video means a lot to me! I wish all doctors were like you! 🥺
I loved this video considering I will be going to college next year and major in nursing!!
Jordan Forstadt ight
Always overlooked a nurses job! Never realized how much nurses do.
Aw sweet and informative. She totally told you to go away :)
As a nursing student, seeing the things that my mom does as a CNA, I truly admire their strength and optimism.
Melena was a dead giveaway
Thank you.

Thank you. You have given me motivation to go on as a nurse student.🤗
@John Cena paragraphs are optional. :/
This makes me appreciate the nurses even more! Such incredible people!😀👍👍
Maurice Cooper 👋 hey!! I’ve seen you before on Remington James vlogs!!
Becoming a nurse to me is more of a calling then a job, and this video just solidified my decision to become a nurse.
My mom is a nurse and she cares so much about every person she has cared for. I hope that we all get to learn more about nurses with this new year.
There is a part of me that believes there is a silver lining and that it is worth it.
nurses truly deserve a special place in medical practice... they are not only the right hand fr doctors but an open hand for patients.
“Not everyone’s an alcoholic like you” SHMOOOOODDDD😂😂
After 16 years in different profession I am due to qualify as a RN in September. Best think I have ever done. Such an amazing profession that makes real difference in so many peoples' lifes. Happy nurses week ❤
Great to see this appreciation! Good job Dr. Mike!
TurtleCraft i was legit about to comment the same thing!
Noone cares what u do attention seeker
It’s so nice to see doctors appreciating nurses. I’m starting my nursing program in 2 weeks and 1 day. Have prereq finals tomorrow! Wish me luck!
Good luck hope you crush them!
Doctor Mike react to the tv show Nurse Jackie
Good luck!!
J-net Lane Thanks! I aced it (:
I don’t know about anybody else, but I feel like EMSs are also extremely underrated
Very.
What does « EMS » stand for ?
Doki Doki Emerg medical services
As a nurse and an EMT, I love this comment.
