- Sheffield and Tinsley Canal was opened 22 February 1819 and has just celebrated its bi centenary.
This is part 1 of a series of 3 videos that take you on a historical journey along the full length of the canal into Victoria Quays in the city of Sheffield
I am very thankful for the adventures that you guide us in. I am 51 and a medically retired guy. I have been fascinated by the British canal system since my younger days and saw them on tv. I may never make it over from Arkansas to GB to see them. I love the railroad lines, tunnels, underground places thst you visit. Its been fun and a blessing to see all of it. Thanks a million! A big fan of yours.
Thanks I really appreciate your comments, I know they are so, grateful and that's great and makes all my filming worthwhile. Part 2 continues the journey but by kayak to make it more interesting, see you soon, all the best Pat
This guy should have his own tv show on Sundays.
That would be interesting, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Frankly sir, you're too good for the tripe that passes for TV. You remind me of the OLD PBS when I was a kid. I'm 50 now.
I agree, I think a lot of people would like his format. I do. I used to like watching Fred Dibnah, for same reason. Interested in something that I am too, and format is much more personable than much of TV.
@@AshinAsia thanks, Pat
What a great canal ! Great job !
Hi Patrick, I am from the USA and I appreciate you doing your videos so I can see other places in the world that I will probably never see in person. I like how you film your videos and how you explain what is going on in the videos and what is going on around the areas.
Hi Steve and thanks, appreciate your comments Pat
Take care of yourself...thanx a lot for posting such informative video...my best wishes for your speedy recovery
Thanks Pat
Really enjoyed that Pat, your one man film production is amazing. That you for taking the time to do this. I also owe you thanks for inspiring me to wild camp. This week my 12 year old lad and I went on our second camp to Kinder Downfall, still a bit nippy at night but with video's like yours around we had the knowledge to do it in comfort. Thanks again, look after yourself.
Thanks for that and glad you and your son got out camping. Kinder Downfall such a great place to camp. Thanks for watching, all the best Pat
Another good production Pat. Informative as usual. I have just about watched all of your videos now ! Good stuff bud.
Thanks and so pleased you enjoyed my vidios, thanks Pat
Pat, you are an inspiration ! I so enjoy your videos of the beautiful peaks and the fabulous city of SHEFFIELD.
I used to live in Crookes in Sheffield, and have since moved away and miss the place, however, thanks to you and your videos I am able to get my 'fix' of the old steel city and its surrounding countryside !
I have also been back recently and replicated the pub crawl you did a while back and consumed too many beers from abbey dale breweries in the Norfolk Arms !!
All the best,
Steve B
Hi Steve and really glad my vidios are keeping you in touch with your old city. The beer round here has certainly improved over last few years with many new breweries and micro pubs, all the best Pat
Very interesting Pat. My old man was also in the RAF. He flew as a navigator in a Beaufighter out of North Africa during the war. They were brave men in the RAF.
Yes Maud, very brave men, and so young, thanks Pat
Hey Patrick, I live near the Lehigh and Delaware canals in Pennsylvania, I have always been interested in their past and fascinated by the way the locks worked. Unfortunately most of our canals were not maintained and allowed to go dry.
Your explorations of your canal systems make me envious to get on a canal boat and see where it goes. I hope that you
recover from your thyroid operation and get your voice back to full strength. Your videos are always looked forward to, I never
know where your adventures will lead us. Thank you.
Hi Joseph we are luckly our canal, s are looked after and maintained and many people do use them, part 2 will see me take to the water in my kayak, should be interesting, thanks Pat
Of your voice, I'll only say that I appreciate how clearly you speak such that even a Yank like me can understand you in some of the noisy environments you encounter. Even here you manage to speak well and I appreciate it.
I'm fascinated by Britain's canal system. It's not something that's been done in the US to anywhere near the extent that you've done it there and I don't really have a point of reference for understanding the full benefit of canals in the UK. It also amazes me how there seems to be a whole subculture that's developed on the canal system.
I also appreciate the WWII history connections. You all were certainly in the thick of it there. My grandfather was a Pearl Harbor vet, a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. It was the closest we got to being attacked although Hawaii had not yet joined the United States. I was in the Marines myself and came to London with my unit to participate in the 100th Royal Tournament. I was fascinated to learn that roof of Earl's Court where we stayed was used as an air raid lookout. I enjoyed exploring that building and am kind of sad that it has been torn down.
Thanks Jim for your interesting comments, everybody of our age seems to have connections to WW2, it just shows how it affected everybody at that time. Great story and really appreciate your comments, thanks Pat
the british canals have amazing history it's nice to see they are still there look forward to part two
Thanks David, part 2 more exiting, by kayak, Pat

Hi Patrick. Only found your channel recently. Fabulous. Love it. You explore all the areas I used to as a teenager. I'm living abroad for almost 30 years now and the memories just come flooding in when I see your well presented exploits. You are one of the wonders of Sheffield. Long may the recording gods shine upon you sir.
Thank you for the kind words and its great that it is bringing back memories, Sheffield is changing with construction work all over the place with major works going on around the Moor area, hope to bring you more about the canal soon, thanks Pat
Thanks for the reply Patrick. I'm looking forward to the rest of the canal video. When I was an early teenager I used to walk my dog along the canal and I am more familiar with the canal basin end up as far as where the running track was built years ago for the Student Olympics. Thanks again for creating magic with your camera. Funny fact...... I do lots of work for the business next door to megaflash technologies. Really nice bunch of lads. Take care.
Glad you’re feeling better, looking forward to your new camping and exploration videos. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Joe will be exploring soon, just like to vary my vidios, thanks Pat
The us is such a young country. In a historic village that was founded in 1791. Love your exploring these places and actually sharing the history and importance.
Thanks appreciate your comments, Pat

Another great vid Pat cant wait for your next one
Thanks Brian, on with filming in my kayak now, thanks Pat
As alwaays Pat you make fantastic and interesting videos. Good to see you back.
Thanks Alan
Hi Patrick,
Just wanted to tell you that you have been the main inspiration for me getting into wild camping. I’ve been camping with the scouts since I was 6 and I’m 25 and a scout leader now but new to wild camping. I first caught your first ladybower plughole vid after I visited it last year, since then I have watched all your videos multiple times and I love all your camping and exploring videos- well anything you make really. I’ve been on two wild camps in the last month with a friend and this week I’m attempting my first solo wild camp on Kinder(sure is nice getting away from the kids!) Canals are another passion of mine so I was thrilled to hear you were making this video. You’re the only person I subscribe to on RUclips as love ALL your videos.
I want to wish you a full recovery and I look forward to your future videos, all the best, Jack.
Thanks for those kind words Jack, yes I was in the scouts and loved every minute of it. Was still going on Dad's and Lads camps a few years ago and brought back many happy memories.
Hope the wild camping goes well, and see you on part 2 when I,ll be taking to the water with my kayak, all the best Pat
Love a bit of history pal. Good job as usual
Yes Billy such a tranquil place in the old industrial part of Sheffield
Really enjoyed that Patrick .. Thank you for sharing it with us all ... look forward to part - 2 and 3 .. take care ... Frank
Thanks Frank, such alot to see, Pat
Great video photography it make you realise how much work went into building these canals. People take it for granted when they see a canal and don't think twice about how long these took to build with out todays machinery. When your stood next to that lock you look so small it makes you realise the scale of these things. Thanks for sharing such a Historical look into the canal looking forward to seeing the next part. Take care
Thanks David yes we are lucky to have all these massive structures from our industrial past still with us and places we can use for leisure. Just walking along the canal is a pleasure with so much to see and so many people to talk to, all the best Pat
Great video Pat. ty and God bless you...
Thanks Gazza, kind of you to say
Great watch Pat, very interesting and informative.
Thanks Rob very interesting place, loads of history hidden away, and I managed not to fall into the canal ..... thanks Pat
I love getting out and about and going exploring but when I cannot I try and watch others doing what I would like to do and find your videos very relaxing and humorous. You are a top man for doing these and look forward to working my way through all that you have done in no particular order. Good job top man.
Thanks Box, nice of you to say and hope the vidios make you feel like your are there, sorry about the delay in answering, just going through comments I have missed, thanks Pat
Another smashing video Pat, very informative and I'm looking forward to the next part. 👍
Thanks Clive, out on the water with my kayak in Part 2, all the best Pat
Greetings from Chicago Patrick. Yet another great video. I love the way you incorporate history into your work, especially the tribute to the armed forces of that generation , men and women whose terrible sacrifices are all too forgotten in this age. Thank you, Neil

Thanks for this vlog Pat, brings back some great memories of my youth. Growing up in Darnall I spent many happy times playing and cycling up and down the canal. Hope your feeling much better after your op.. 👍
A great place to send your childhood, fishing biking and generally messing about on the canal, sounds great, all the best Pat
Well done Pat. I enjoyed your video immensely; especially the family history. The English people truly showed their courage: 1939 thru 1945. The greatest generation. I've watched videos of living on the canal boats. Yes, very pricey indeed. I cannot wait for part 2. Thank you!
Sorry, I should say "British" people.
Thanks Doug, yes everbody was a hero in those dark years in 1940, all the best Pat
My wife's uncle would have certainly corrected me as he fought with the Black Watch in Holland.
