  • In Episode 19.0 of Rob & Steve's Traditional Knives Anthology, we take a detailed look at a large improved trapper pattern from Great Eastern Cutlery, the #74 Saddle Trapper from 2012. With a a robust blade set including a main clip with exquisite lines and a full size wharncliffe secondary, nestled in one of the most graceful and functional handles GEC has ever made, the #74 was an instant classic.
    I think perhaps it's time to resurrect this one for another run... I have an idea!

    I didn't even know these knifes existed until I watched your vids on slip joints. but your passion for them made me want one. I only have one as if right now. but a SFO that looked like that would be super sweet. you should put a long pull in it.

    I forgot to mention that this knife in a single clip is pinchable! Also I had my boslters satined, I wish GEC would satin up some bolsters instead of always polishing. All steel or nickel silver construction would be great, Especially if you go with Gabon. Black wood with bright white steel is very classy.

    Great video Brother. The knives look awesome through your camera lens! After I wrote & sent in this body of work, I found out that Perry Miller had become the president of the NKCA.( National Knife Collector's Association ).... But then tragically, Mr. Perry Miller passed away close to a couple years ago. Such sad news to learn so late in my research. I think cancer took his life. Mr. Miller's SFO bullet trappers & lockback's with the TUNA VALLEY tang stamps made by GEC were also the earliest SFO's from GEC, and highly sought after today. Very rare knives. We hardly ever see them for sale. His now closed "Space Coast Cutlery" store was only a 30 minute drive from my home. How I wish I could've discovered these knives sooner, visited his store & met the man. He was a true hero to the traditional knife renaissance. Look for his knives folks!........that is.........IF ANY ever turn up on the market.

      + Howabouthetruth another good one my friend. Really enjoyed and I thank you both for sharing with us. May self that knife would look good with either blade. I bought the lock back warncliff. The blade had a good bit of play. I called and the lady told me to send it back. And when I got it back it was solid as a rock. Keep them coming and may the blessings of the Lord be upon you all.

      +Randy Parker Thanks for the kind words Randy. Glad you enjoyed it. It's also encouraging to hear you had a good experience with GEC's warranty service. I also have one of their lock backs with wharncliffe, but it doesn't have any blade play. Well, other than just a tiny but that is barely detectable. But I also have some of their lock backs with zero blade play.

    Rob, your idea for the single blade 74 is excellent. Go for it! I would be severely tempted to buy multiple. The 74 looks like my beloved 47 viper but with the blade(s) on the opposite side. For quite a while I have wished for a Northfield 47 viper with a nice clip point blade, satin blade finish, a cloud shield and possibly a lanyard hole. I think your concept would definitely satisfy my desire.

    Perhaps the Wharncliffe rides high in the frame so that the shape of the spine of the blade meets with the tail end of the handle in one continuous curve? Maybe it's just designed that way for looks rather than pure function.

    Rob: Great video. An SFO comprising a single blade clip, FFG, cut swedge, long pull, no etch, satin finish in the handle materials you described would be an absolute winner. Put me down for one Ivory Bone model...

    Word is that there may be a 'surprise' run of Saddle Trappers before Christmas to follow on from the current #74 Mustang release, and in the same materials - having seen the examples in your video I hope so! And with a lower-seated Wharnie...
    Never seen ram horn on a GEC before - stunning, perhaps they'll do it again one day?

      Sorry it took so long to find your comment David, and I hope ya see my response. Seeing as it's now nearly 8 months after ya posted here, turns out we didn't get another run of Saddle Trappers.......hopefully someday. Yeah, there weren't a lot of GEC releases with ram's horn handles.......but I happen to like em, provided it's a good pair of slabs. Some ram's horn don't look so good. It's been a very long time since GEC has used this material, and I don't know if we'll ever see it again. We know sambar stag is tougher & more crack/chip resistant than bone, and I'm assuming ram's horn would be about as tough as stag. ????? ( I don't know why, but "google tube" no longer sends me automated notifications for COMMENTS/RESPONSES like they used to. Only for new videos. This is why it takes me so long to find new comments, I have to search through my emails to find them, or if I come back to these videos. That's how I stumbled onto your comment so terribly late. I greatly appreciate your kind words David!!! )

      @@howabouthetruth2157 A great pleasure to hear from you Steve, and thank you for your informative and gracious reply. As a man just a couple of years into his GEC journey, I find your wisdom (and Rob's) invaluable.
      My #74 (a 2020 Mustang in Arizona Ironwood) is among my most prized knives. At least there's a #73 Trapper coming, and I'm hoping to get the Tidioute in Rosewood. Unlike some, I like a Trapper, and I use a Case Trapper for fishing - the clip for cleaning the fish and the spey for eating lunch. It'll be great to have a GEC for the job!

    I had a Northfield 74 cocobolo made into a single clip and I love it! It's smooth, light weight and molds to my hand. If one didn't like the 47 Viper due to the upsweep. I have both the viper and 74's and am convinced these are the same frame simply reciprocated. or dyslexic twins if you will. I bet a 74 single wharnie would go over as more comfortable for some. My 74 has a long pull clip but the swedge runs over the top of the pull instead of starting just in front of the wedge like the 15, and 54, and many other GEC clips long pull versions seen commonly. I prefer the more commonly seen long pull clips, also mine has a shorter long pull. I'll try to post a pic.

      +Brandon Nelson Hey Brandon, thanks for chiming in. While your knife is indeed a 74, it was not a "Saddle Trapper" to begin with. What you have is what is called the 74 "Ranch Hand". The frame is identical, but the blades are different. There was yet another 74 "Cotton Sampler", which was the very first knife made on the 47 frame. ( other than the Farm & Field/Hay'n Helper line of knives, without bolsters ) Yours originally came with a rather large spey blade for the secondary, whereas the Saddle Trappers have the wharnie secondary. I tried your link, but I couldn't get it to work. I would love to see how your knife looks as a single blader. I bet it's really nice!

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 8 лет назад

      +Howabouthetruth OOops.......When I mentioned the Cotton Sampler knife, I meant say it's also on the 74 frame. ( not the 47 ) And I've noticed that too Brandon, the 47 and the 74 really are the same, just inverted as you said...........good eye friend !!!

    A buddy of mine was the first to have the 2012 BF trapper modded into a single by modder on BF Glennbad. Turned out wonderfully. "Lanny clip" esque. In fact, two other forum members did so afterwards as well. Links to the photos below. Good luck getting getting an SFO though, many patterns haven't resurfaced for quite a while.

      +R Tsai I don't think you fully understand how GEC operates when it comes to requesting SFO's. If you order enough units, GEC WILL make that SFO run for you. ( Providing both parties come to an agreement on the obvious things, such as price.) If you cannot afford enough units to be made by GEC, there still exists the possibility of a smaller SFO, providing GEC is interested in the pattern itself being requested, where GEC will produce the pattern for themselves, IN ADDITION TO, and right alongside that smaller SFO. It has been done both ways, many times. A perfect and very recent example is the #38 Grinling Whittler, where a gentleman & fellow knife enthusiast named Roy Humenick kicked off the idea for the pattern, yet he could only afford 25 knives.......that is only TWENTY FIVE knives. Not very many at all. Yet Bill Howard was so excited about the idea, that he gladly designed the knife from scratch, as "The American Whittler" for Roy Humenick, and penciled it into their schedule alongside a major production run of the same pattern for GEC, and then Derrick Bohn decided to get in on the action & added HIS OWN SFO for that pattern as well, in Black Camel bone. The rest as they say........is history. .......So A TINY SFO ORDER of only 25 units turned into a rather massive run by GEC standards, in something like 13 ( + or - ) different handle options.

    • @Ryouchijtx
      @Ryouchijtx 8 лет назад

      +Howabouthetruth
      Much of it I actually did already know (38 whittlers, the history of how the American Whittler came to be ) but I did not know through all the correspondence with GEC/Chris that even if you could only afford "x" amount of units with GEC there still might be a possibility of the knife becoming a reality. On my end we only got as far as the tooling for a new pattern...estimated $5k to $8k (tooling charge) for a new pattern, 500 piece minimum...

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 8 лет назад

      +R Tsai The tooling charge your speaking of and the 500 piece run minimum, if that is with GEC, it's obviously a new pattern for them, but it must not be a pattern that they were willing to build for themselves at the time, is the only thing I can figure, because they had none of the tooling for the 38 Grinling, as evidenced by it being a premier production run, which they etch on the blades of only the Tidioute brand. Or are you speaking of a different company? Just curious. By the way, thanks for the link to see the knife, while it is the same 74 frame, the blade is not from the Saddle Trapper but from what I believe was called the Rancher. The blade is quite a bit different.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 8 лет назад

      +Howabouthetruth I said the knife in the link you provided was actually a "Rancher"........but the name of that pattern is "Ranch Hand". I was pretty close though.
