    What a treat Rob and Steve, we do not have your kind of dangerous weather over here in the UK, the power of nature is awe inspiring and every precaution needs to be attended to for you and your family, my prayers to you and all. OMG, when I saw that grinling whittler my jaw did drop, got a lovely wooden handled one, she ends up in my pocket more than I should although more she gets out and lightly used, the better she looks. Every one of my trad American folding knives is a gem to me, except my beloved 735113, she got a vicious backspring, like some ladies I have loved. God bless all.

      Travis H Hey Travis you can go to Great Eastern Cutlery Production schedule and it will have links to click on to show you what just finished, what’s in production and what’s coming next. Congrats on getting your first GEC!! You picked a perfect pattern in the Oil Filed Jack to be your first GEC! It’s absolutely a great jack knife! I have 4 of the variations and the fit & finish is perfect and so is the size of this #86. The Oily Creek #86 is a beauty and has the sweetest Shield! Your going to love it! I’m pretty sure you already have it. What do you think about your #86? I love the added Tidioute in the wrench! I got the Sucker Rod Wood, JSR SFO Almond Mocha jigged bone, Gunstock Jacks SFO in Bloodwood and the Northfield UN-X-LD autum jigged bone .

      That's a great heavy-duty slipjoint, both the oil-rod covers & the oily creek bone look good. Best way I know to get new GEC knives is to add your name to the KnivesShipFree mailing list. Then it's a horse race but at least you have a chance.

      I like my 72, but as a new GEC buyer who had to save months for it, this run had a lot of finish issues that really left me crestfallen. Thanks to Rob's videos, I knew how to fix a lot of them myself, but I shouldn't have had to. BUUUUT, a little bird told me they may be doing new stockmans in the spring, so perhaps, if I have the means, they can make it up to me ;-p.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  4 года назад

      GreenEYE#3 Value is a difficult thing to determine on a knife like that. But I think in a situation where the right buyer comes along, it’s probably a $250 knife.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 4 года назад

      I would agree that $250 would be the bare minimum price for this one. To the right buyer who understands & appreciates how rare this knife is, easily north of $350. Trust me. Many of the patterns made years ago by GEC that are special in one way or another, such as "Genuine" or "Natural" stag, are no longer being produced because exceptional stag is far too difficult to source nowadays, or runs that are very few in number in some other handle material, are now fetching prices at auction that exceed the now "cooled off" fervor brought by the TC Barlow's. Don't go by what the newer GEC knives are fetching, because they are not produced using the old WW2 era Nicholson grinders. Those machines were retired a year or so ago, and GEC is now using CNC machines. The newer GEC knives of the past couple years to present are also made in much larger runs........some even surpassing 700 in number, and that's for only one particular knife in one handle material. Many patterns that are now "vintage" ( mostly produced from 2006 - 2013 ) GEC's, such as the 85, 48, 72, 73, 42.....to name a few, are now fetching prices that boggle the mind. But again, it's usually the ones that are special in one way or another. "Factory Test Run, prototype, orphan knives" are a few that come to mind in any particular pattern or handle option.

      @@314319 Thanks for the kind words and you're very welcome friend. You are so polite, just call me Steve. I have Greg of TSA knives to thank for not only this knife, but many other rare birds by GEC, and especially the fact that he is the one who made me aware of such things to keep an eye out for. Sorry it took so long to notice your comment/question. I've been so busy lately, but I'm just about finished with writing the text for some really cool knives, from GEC and other makers, including an old classic, to send to Rob for a video. I have just acquired yet 2 more knives that are the oldest yet, and I will have the written info for that video ready to go soon afterwards. One of the knives dates from 1857 to 1877, and is the finest 4 blade big congress ever made by anyone. The precision absolutely smokes anything I've ever seen, and it was produced before the machinery was available that we would consider "old technology" today. The men that made those knives were true masters. It has quite a bit of wear on the blades, yet it's still 100% usable. But the entire chassis including the jigged bone handles are pristine as can be, and so classy. When I first got it in hand, I was floored. Now I know why they called the New York Knife Co the best of the best. This 2nd video will have some really special GEC's to go along with the old knives as well. I won't take as long preparing for this one, so keep an eye on Rob's channel & have a great evening.

      The Schatt & Morgan brand was sold in Queen’s liquidation, but I don’t remember who purchased it. The rarest one for me would be one without blade play! I'm just giving a hard time, but they do need to tighten up on that...

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 4 года назад

      I know I'm awful late in finding your comment, but hopefully, you'll find my response here. The following information applies to ANYONE who seems to be "having a problem with blade play in GEC knives". 99% of the time, the real source of the problem is NOT the knife itself, the problem started WITH YOU. Not being disrespectful, but guys like you are SO obsessed with "blade play" on a traditional folding knife, that you are constantly grabbing your open blades and yanking on them "to see if they have blade play yet". I bet you do it every time you open a blade. You know it and I know it. THAT is exactly what's causing your blade play, so DON'T DO IT. Knives are made to cut things, ya don't use a folder in any way that involves "yanking on the blades sideways to check for blade play". Keep slamming and/or opening your car door so hard, that it bounces off the limit of opening, and you'll have a sagging car door that does not shut properly in no time, same difference. If you insist on checking them periodically, grab ANY blade ONLY NEAR THE BASE, NOT OUT NEAR THE TIP, where you are applying far more pressure than you realize through the increased leverage, and then give them only the slightest amount of pressure to check. Over 95% of my 240 or so GEC knives have ZERO blade play. This includes the 8 GEC knives I use in EDC rotation throughout the week. I carry & use them every day.........NO blade play. Shoot, I've got antique folders over 100 yrs old that still don't have any blade play whatsoever, and these knives were used quite a bit over the years. This is why I'm convinced the problem lies with you, NOT the knife. Ever hear that old joke where the patient says to the doctor: "Hey Doc, it hurts whenever I do this".......to which the doctor replies: "Well then DON'T DO IT". Still not convinced? Then HOW COME the vast majority of us traditional knife users do NOT have this problem, yet guys like you do? My suggestion to you is: Buy a new GEC knife, upon opening it for the first time, CAREFULLY check it for blade play by BARELY giving each blade a very slight jiggle ONLY NEAR THE BASE of each blade. There ain't no blade play ( aside from the rare factory defect ) Now, just use and enjoy the knife.........forget about "blade play". Check that knife a year later the way I described. That knife will still be just fine, and will remain so for decades to come..........trust me.

    • @1221vito
      @1221vito 4 года назад +1

      Howabouthetruth no worries about the lateness to the party. I see what you’re saying, but to believe that you know all about what ‘guys like me’ do is a bad habit to get into. I know how to handle knives. I’ve owned and used hundreds and have carried them daily since I was a kid. The blade play I was referring to wasn’t slight, or within reason, nor did I make it worse. It was a lot of up and down play and side to side on a lockback and horrible side to side on a slip joint. Both sent back immediately and repaired and are fine now. I’ve seen several other examples in friend’s knives and on various forums. GEC makes great stuff, but they do sometimes have excessive blade play. My suggestion to you sir is to climb down from your high horse and don’t assume you know everything and others know nothing.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 3 года назад

      @@1221vito I just stumbled across your latest response to me posted over 10 months ago. Didn't I tell you that I wasn't trying to be "disrespectful"......YES, I DID. Furthermore, I find it awful funny how NOBODY is posting videos........not even years ago, complaining about their GEC knives "having blade play". There are now dozens upon dozens of youtube channels featuring GEC knives for years now. NOT A SINGLE COMPLAINT ABOUT "BLADE PLAY". Yet "you and your buddy" have gotten "several". Denial is a helluva thing. I already know darn good & well the ONLY handful of people we hear from making these complaints, are the very ones CAUSING THE PROBLEM YOURSELF. I will say it again: Guys like you obsess over "does this knife have blade play yet?".......AND SO YOU YANK ON THE BLADES FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME. YOU KNOW IT, AND I KNOW IT. I currently have 13 GEC knives in various patterns for my EDC rotation, and depending on the year each knife was made, they are now anywhere between 7 to 12 YEARS OLD. NO BLADE PLAY. Not counting the near 200 or so GEC's in my collection. So yes, I DO know more about GEC knives than you mister. GEC's lockbacks ( many, but not all ) have always been known to have ever so slight up & down blade play, and Bill Howard says that's so the lock can be released easier. It has NO AFFECT on the use of the knife whatsoever. But I can already sense this issue is like beating a dead horse with you. One last thing: "Where's all the other viewers in these comments making the same complaint?" I DON'T SEE THEM ANYWHERE. "Gee, I wonder why".

SEVERAL OPTlONS ARE AVAlLABLE & EASY TO FlND ONLlNE. l WOULD AVOlD USlNG "A BUTCHER'S STEEL". ONCE PROPERLY SHARPENED & STROPPED, PREPARE TO EXPERlENCE WHAT "WlCKED SLlCERS" THESE KNlVES TRULY ARE!!! KEEP YOUR BLADES STROPPED OFTEN, TO LESSEN SHARPENlNG ON STONES, THUS EXTENDlNG THE LlFE OF YOUR BLADES. THE 1095 CARBON ON YOUR NEW GEC KNlFE WlLL SHARPEN SUPER EASY & TAKE A WlCKED SHARP RAZOR EDGE, LlKE A SURGEON'S SCALPEL. THAT'S WHY WE LOVE THlS OLD STEEL ON THESE OLD STYLE THlNNER BLADES. lF YOUR NEW QUEEN KNlFE HAS D2 TOOL STEEL, lT WlLL BE DlFFlCULT AT FlRST TO "GET THE EDGE YA WANT". AN AGGRESSlVE DlAMOND STONE lS YOUR FRlEND, BUT AFTER THAT, TOUCH UPS ARE MUCH EASlER WlTH LESS AGGRESSlVE STONES. BUT D2 HOLDS AN EDGE VERY WELL. THE QUALlTY OF GEC lS USUALLY MUCH BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE QUEEN KNlFE. MANY NEWBlES GET "OBSESSED WlTH BLADE WOBBLE" AND ACTUALLY CAUSE LOOSE BLADES BY CONSTANTLY "WlGGLlNG THE BLADE". NEVER, EVER, GRAB YOUR BLADES NEAR THE TlP TO "CHECK FOR BLADE PLAY". BY DOlNG THAT, YOU ARE USlNG MORE LEVERAGE FORCE THAN YOU REALlZE. thank you for all that great advise, I'm definitely excitedly awaiting their arrival, I also grabbed a queen swing guard 1 of 100 in winterbottom. I wish I'd been involved when the gec swing guards were available, it's definitely a unique design that I definitely love.

      THE ONLY REASON l DlDN'T TRY OUT ONE OF THOSE QUEEN SWlNG GUARDS lN WlNTERBOTTOM, WAS BECAUSE l WAS SO BUSY BUYlNG OTHER KNlVES & COULDN'T MUSTER UP THE EXTRA FUNDS. l WAS lNTERESTED THOUGH. lF YA HAVEN'T ALREADY DONN, CHECK OUT OUR TKA VlDEO ABOUT "BEN HOGAN". THE VERY LAST KNlFE lN THAT VlDEO lS A SPECTACULAR GEC SWlNG GUARD, HAFTED lN THElR "GENUlNE STAG". VERY RARE KNlFE. "GENUlNE STAG" ONLY MEANS GEC CUT THE STAG FROM WHOLE ANTLER ROUNDS. ALL THElR STAG lS GENUlNE SAMBAR OF COURSE, BUT THEY ARRlVE AS PRE-CUT SLABS TO BE SlZED, HAFTED & FlNlSHED ONTO THE KNlFE HANDLES. l DO LOVE WlNTERBOTTOM, AND l HAVE A FEW, lNCLUDlNG A COUPLE QUEEN BARLOW'S.

    I would just like to apologise to anyone I may have offended. it wasn't my goal or point. to be honest I don't know much about these knives, haven't handled one, might be the greatest thing ever. I was truly just curious about hearing some views of why they're great, why they're desired by esteemed collectors.

      GEC KNlVES ARE MADE MOSTLY WlTH EQUlPMENT & HlGHLY SKlLLED HANDS-ON TECHNlQUES BETWEEN 75 & 150 ( + OR - ) YEARS OLD. VERY DlFFlCULT TO DO, ESPEClALLY FROM A FACTORY PRODUCTlON APPROACH. THE AVERAGE GEC POCKET KNlFE REQUlRES OVER 200 HAND OPERATlONS TO COMPLETE. SOME MORE DlFFlCULT PATTERNS (MODELS) REQUlRE EVEN MORE. THEY ARE TRUE WORKlNG TOOLS AS WELL AS VlRTUAL TlME MACHlNES FROM THE PAST. MANY OF THESE PATTERNS HAVEN'T BEEN MADE THlS WAY lN OVER A HUNDRED YEARS. THEY ARE ALSO THE EPlTOME FOR WHAT "MADE lN USA/GERMANY/ENGLAND" ONCE STOOD FOR. SO MUCH TO SEE, LEARN & APPREClATE ABOUT THESE KNlVES AND THE MASTER ARTlSANS lN FACTORlES WHO MADE THEM, EVEN TODAY. WE WELCOME YOU TO RESEARCH & BEGlN YOUR OWN JOURNEY lNTO THESE KNlVES. THE "TKA SERlES" OF VlDEOS HERE, AND lNDEED MANY OTHERS HERE ON ROB'S CHANNEL ARE A GREAT PLACE TO START. THERE ARE SEVERAL GREAT BOOKS & PERlODlCALS, AS WELL AS THE AWESOME PEOPLE TO MEET ON VARlOUS PUBLlC ONLlNE FORUMS.

    nothing special here, you want a rare knife? no i mean a real rare knife not some new traditional knife that can be remade with a couple of keyboard presses of the cnc machine. find a kinfolks toledo scale or a case cigar with composite scales from 1945

      Richard Mcginnis Obviously you’ve never seen the GEC factory. FYI: people could understand you more clearly if you pulled your pants down before talking.

      Hey kiddo, these knives ARE indeed, very rare. I challenge you to FIND ONE. Furthermore, if ya pay attention to this series, we've already done a couple videos of old vintage/antique knives AND their history, that are hard to find today, dated BEFORE "1945". But the difference is the fact that ALL of those old knives were made by the tens of thousands back in the day. So don't even try to educate me boy, I've been using these knives for over half a century now. But I will forgive your rude ignorance as I invite you to look up those videos in this series, and keep an checking this channel, as I am just now finishing up material with some truly old historic knives to be included. The first is nearly done, to send to Rob for a new video here. But the material & knives for the 2nd video afterwards, will have 2 extremely ancient folders that are nothing short of breathtaking. How does the years of manufacture: 1857 - 1877 sound. We're talkin' around or even before the civil war era......NOT "1945" kiddo. So keep an eye out here, and come join us TO LEARN..........that is........if you can behave yourself in these comments.
