    Tony Bose lives in my hometown of Hymera Indiana now. I've had the pleasure to meet him in person at a local antique shop that has a plethora of Case knives.

    These knives should be between $200-$300 depending on the model. I really want one, but these prices are ridiculous

    • @howabouthetruth2157

      I agree. And if you think the price of this version is steep, the abalone version is somewhere north of $600.00!!! Maybe even more! Good grief. Crazy, isn't it?

      Stand Straight It is really stunning... from 3 feet. Even the way the main blade action works is amazing in a traditional knife. It's just such a shame they botched the details so badly.

    Wow...Rob and Steve. Glad I watched this video BEFORE buying one of these. It's been on my radar for a while...and based upon what you are showing...this knife's lackluster quality is not something that I'd be willing accept. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO. Once again, Case just makes me go, "Huh???!!!"

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 9 лет назад +1

      Hi Chris. Yeah, it is a shame. You should've seen the 1st one. The main blade crashed into the secondary pen blade. It would close with a nice snap, but bounce up a quarter inch ( the tip ) out of the blade well and just stay there, until ya pushed it closed with your finger. Had the exact same bad grinds & poorly fitted handles. The abalone version appears to have better swedges, but I just don't know about the rest of the knife. And the price for the abalone is insane. What's so bizarre, is the fact they fabricated & built the guts of the knife with amazing precision........only to turn around and let a group of hacks complete the knife from there.

    • @cmonsterz
      @cmonsterz 9 лет назад

      That is sad. I'm eyeballing a Case/Bose trapper...but even though my Lanny's Clip has jaw dropping quality, I probably won't get it.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 9 лет назад

      cmonsterz Yes, I watched your video about your Lanny's Clip, and she is indeed a real beauty! I would love one! All I want everyone to know, is to shop carefully and politely demand a pre-inspection of ANY knife, regardless of its maker. That way, hopefully we can all enjoy these knives without any unwelcomed surprises, as the companies learn from the "duds" they let slip out the door, adjust their methods accordingly & tighten up in QA. :-)

    I think even Tony Bose said that he does not design most of these, he resurects them from early designs and improves on them.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 6 лет назад

      Correct. Tony says: "I bring old patterns back from the grave".....end quote. Made "better" due to the way he uses a special insert at the blade joint, for a smoother walk & talk, that doesn't scratch up the tang stamps & extending the life of the joint, modern steel, and Tony's own specially shaped pins to hold the covers on. The taper of Tony's pins enables him to hand hammer them into rivets, yet the shaft of the pin does not "expand" inside the hole passing through the bone or other natural cover material, which eliminates any chance of causing "pin cracks" in the covers. Very smart technique.

    Great overview! I agree it’s not nearly a Bose custom, and the price reflects that. All things considered, this is the best Case knife they’ve put out in 50 years 😂
    I carry mine daily as a secondary knife. For the $250 I have into it, I’m pleased with mine.

    Getting ready to watch your video and am glad of the subject that you chose. I am looking to get a whittler and I've read a recommendation for this knife. Great that I can get a "no hand in the cookie jar" review from you. Still looking for recommendations ;)

      Hello. GEC is just about to start production of a brand new model whittler, called the #38 "John Chapman". They are making a 3-blade splitback whittler version of this new pattern, as well as a 2 blade "half-whittler" version. The knife will be 3 and 7/8" inches long when closed. They probably won't be rolling them out to the dealers until around February. We KNOW they will get it right. You can see the pattern mock-up on their main website. It will cost a fraction of what this Case/Bose does. .........and be a much better value too! Check it out. :-) ( On their main page, look down the right hand column. The listing will be found there to click on. Then we can all watch them build the knives soon! )

      Thank you Steve. I've heard of the #38 here and there but haven't seen a pic or mock-up. I will certainly check it out. Thanks again...blessings

      Stand Straight Your very welcome. One thing I forgot to mention, is this first new #38 will have a clip point main blade, while the half-whittler version will sport a hawkbill. I'm pretty confident that GEC will begin production on a wharncliffe version for the whittler after they're done with this first offering.

    It is a very appealing high end custom Case XX knife ? !- ... or is it ? at first glance the unboxed uber - cool luxury pocket knife appears delightful and compelling - YET however a detailed & MUCH closer inspection of the key core design elements by a true seasoned cultery expert reveals that all it not quite alluring as it may ' appear ' to be with more careful and through examination - by a well trained eye - upon the expensive & highly collectible Bose traditional pattern folder. I was almost entranced and informed ; yet dismayed and wiser. " O grasshopper what you see is not what it may seem to be at first ! A brave sage must walk through many reeds and water to truly know the nature of mud. "

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 2 года назад

      Yeah, it was a shame. The mechanical aspects of the knife ( the back springs/and tumbler.....and the integrated bushings for the pivots, and liners ) were spot-on. But the rest of the knife was shameful, for the price.....really, at any price. And ya should've seen the first one: it was an outright disgrace: the main blade when closing crashed right into the rear secondary blade......and that same secondary blade rubbed the rear liner too. Plus it had all the other flaws that this one had. I sure hope at least some of them left the Case factory better than these. And none of these problems had anything to do with the late, great Tony Bose. He simply delivered the actual working pattern in person to the Case factory, with all the spec's for each part, gave them some tips in construction, and then the Case workers were on their own after that. Tony played no role in actually constructing any knife inside the Case factory.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 7 месяцев назад

      I would agree with that, but not in the way you may assume: From the early 80's until the present day, the quality of Case knives has been a roller coaster. Quality would become horrible, then they would improve later on, only to go downhill again. This has happened several times. The last truly great Case knives ( at least bearing the Case tang stamps ) were the Case Classics, but all were produced by Queen Cutlery under the guidance of Bill Howard (James Parker owned Case at the time, and he commissioned Bill Howard to produce the Case Classics ) using the original tooling & dies. Case Cutlery only actually made 3 of the patterns for the Classics program: the #88 Big Congress, the Anglo Saxon splitback whittler, which was a cross between a long cigar and sleeve-board shape, and I can't recall the name or pattern number of the 3rd knife, but it's a trapper type knife with a funky curved handle. So other than those 3, the majority of the Classics weren't even made by Case. ( The last AUTHENTIC Case knives to be actually produced by Case ended in 1979.......when "the DOT era" had ended. Those knives and their earlier cousins were truly hand-hafted knives, unlike those made in 1980 through their present offerings. ) Now let's talk about Remington: just like Winchester, the ONLY real Remington traditional folders were made between WW1 and WW2. After that, there has never been a real Remington traditional folder........only the name/trademark. Alongside the Case Classics, the authorized reproduction Winchesters were also being produced by Bill Howard at Queen Cutlery..........known as "the Black Box/Red Letter" Winchesters.........this project was founded by Charlie Dorton, who co-owned Bluegrass Cutlery at the time. Just like the Case Classics, the original Winchester tooling & dies were used for the Winchesters.

    I had ordered a case lannys clip in ebony wood from shepherd hills cutlery Since i cannot afford a custom
    tony bose. When i received the knife the blade was off center and the ebony scale on one side had a small crack.
    I am not demanding in general however i paid a premium price for the knife i was very dissapointed, return the knife to shepherd hill and write a letter.
    I love case but i dont know what Is happening in their quality control department or to their workers.
    I started collecting gec more now, i hate to say it but case has dissapointed me. More. Than a few times

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 9 лет назад

      Yep, I have seen several of the Lanny's Clip knives with terribly off-centered blades and gaps in some of the ones with ebony covers. The covers were coming loose from the scales right up next to the bolsters. I would still love to have 1 with the bone covers, providing of course it has no issues. Sorry to hear about your experience Clayton. I hope they make it right for ya. Other than the Case/Bose knives ( without issues ) I am not even interested in Case anymore, but I still love & collect their knives made from the mid '70's and before. I also like many of the Case Classics. Happy New Year Clayton!

      @howabouthetruth2157 9 лет назад

      +Dwight E Howell You should've seen the first one, that I returned. The main blade wouldn't even shut because it bounced off the secondary pen blade and would come to a stop with the tip about 1/4" above the blade well. Then ya had to push it closed. It was downright disgusting. Plus it had pretty much all the same imperfections this one does. They do retail for $450, but I found a dealer selling them for 400. That's still about 250 too much for a knife with all these flaws.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 2 года назад +1

      Sorry I'm so late noticing your question, and I hope ya see my belated response: This was THE 2ND knife, the other one was far worse: the main blade crashed into the rear secondary blade when closing, and that same secondary blade in turn, rubbed the rear liner. I did get a refund on that one. I kept this 2nd one for a short period, and sold it to a dealer for a very cheap price......just to dump it. Of course I did disclose all of it's flaws to the dealer. He bought it anyway.

    ATTENTION ALL VIEWER FRIENDS: It's a doggone shame we have to show such a magnificent & historical design that possesses perhaps the most wicked-cool old-world engineering in traditional cutlery history, in such a harsh review, but the truth is the TRUTH. Firstly, KNOW THIS>> I have also seen other patterns in the Case/Bose series with terribly centered blades such as the "Lanny's Clip" model, yet thankfully, most of the Lanny's are superb. DEMAND that pre-inspection on ALL these knives. Case really blew it on this one. I'm afraid it would be next to impossible for Case to address these issues in a timely manner. The very nature of the shameful flaws would lead to starting from scratch and producing the dissatisfied customer entirely new blades & handles, which requires a total break down & rebuild. Yikes. That's why I would demand either a total replacement, refund or store credit. Kinda blows the "honeymoon" to kingdom come, doesn't it? Excellent video Brother. The next batch will be amazing, including a knife that's 96 to 114 years old. Stay tuned everyone!!!

    • @howabouthetruth2157

      Bob Jordan I agree Bob, from the standpoint of how this knife was produced and with such a high price tag. The guts of the knife, being the springs, milled liners and the lockbar known as "the tumbler" are made to amazing tolerances. You can barely see the seams among all those parts. It's almost as if Case's best cutlers produced the chassis, only to hand it off to a bunch of hacks for the main blade grinds & swedges, bolsters, bone covers, and horrible fit & finish. Believe it or not, THE FIRST ONE was even worse than this knife. I returned it, and this 2nd knife is only marginally better. For near 400 bucks, Case should be ashamed.
