    I watched a ton of tournament footage when ult came out and realized their shields were coming out way faster than mine and they were always angled forward. Went to training mode and had an epiphany that the run animation can be cancelled into shield if you hit shield while running instead of setting the stick back to neutral. Changed my life

    I'm surprised no one has asked the natural question: Why do you have to hold the control stick? The reason is that you have to be running (or about to run) to shield. When you hold forward and hold shield, what actually happens is that on the frame that your dash would normally transition into run, your character will shield. Here's the takeaway: whenever you want to quickly move and shield, tell yourself to *run* and shield, and you'll never mess it up.

      @@davidecimino7112 You're pressing shield too quickly. There's a brief window at the start of your dash where pressing shield will activate a roll. The fastest dash shields in the game are frame 8 if memory serves, so you don't need to press shield very quickly.

    I've never not done this, I wasn't even aware I was doing something right, I'm by no means a tournament ready player.
    Perhaps it's because ultimate isn't my first smash game. Ultimate has these insanely long initial dashes that would encourage this tap forward on the stick instead of holding it, but smash 4 for example doesn't have this, so I always hold forward when I want to run, and interrupt it with a shield, jump or whatever.

  • @Saskaruto16
    @Saskaruto16 3 года назад

    This happens because of Ults jank. So when you hold forward after initial dash like Void shows, you enter Run. Run can be canceled by shield frame 1.
    Unlike 64, Melee, Brawl, and PM, Initial dash can not be canceled frame 1.
    So when you dash dance you cancel an initial dash which can't be canceled by shield with another initial dash.
    But why can't you shield when you don't hold forward but don't do another initial dash?
    Because the people who programmed Ult are dumb.
    In Melee you can "act out of run" "instantly" by crouching. That and jump canceling is how you see Melee players do attacks so fast.
    Ult tried to mimmick this but make it easier by letting you act instantly out of run with no crouch.
    The problem is that for whatever reason they didn't make this automatic run cancel interuptible by shield the way run normally is.
    Smash 4 didn't have this and that's why you could let go and instantly shield without having to hold the stick forward to enter Run first.
