This is another one of my favorite Superman animated movies!
It focuses on that classic DC comic novel of "The Death and Return of Superman". Also this movie's animation had him definitely looking very superior as he should be being the world's greatest superhero he's known as. Lois Lane was pretty cool and helpful in this one too, like that part when she was saving those kids on that bus from Toyman while Superman was presumed dead but of course he wasn't.

  • @DarthTach
    @DarthTach Год назад +8

19:36 In the comics Toyman was just a "funny" villain in the 70's to the end of the 80's. He would commit crimes with toys but not really hurt anyone. That changed in 1993 with Superman #84 where the Toyman kidnaps some kids and when one of the kids Adam Grant (son of Catherine Grant who was a prominent secondary character at the time) helps the others to escape he kills him. It was a very dark turn and actually made the news if I remember.
But it was the 90's and turning everything and everyone GrimDark was the thing back then. Which is why 2 years before you had "The Death of Superman" and "The Breaking of Batman" story arcs (among others between both Marvel and DC).

    • @phousefilms
      @phousefilms 5 месяцев назад

Some versions have made Toyman a pedophile as well, though I don't remember if it was the main canon or just elseworlds(the most prominent was the one in "Lex Luthor:Man of Steel".)

  • @freefall945

    Great reaction Meg.
The Death of Superman comic has a fascinating story behind it, in which the writers had intended that year’s big “event” to be a Superman/Lois wedding. But they were beat to the punch by the Lois and Clark TV series at the time. At a pitch session about alternatives, someone literally joked “we could kill him”. And everyone laughed.
Then stopped laughing and thought about it. Deaths happened in comics before, but were usually undermined the next issue by a resurrection. But the comics stuck to their guns for weeks, and launched into a follow up story about the world without Kal’El - a world you’ll see when you check out the more recent, two part, more faithful adaptation of the same comic: “death of Superman” and “war of the supermen”.
Looking forward to the next one!

Those movies are also more in line with the DC comics New 52 line which in the comics was when they reset & retconned stuff so that most characters were younger and technically new ignoring the almost 80 years worth of lore/history many had built up.

Lex was CONVINCED that it was Superman, who dressed up just to make fun of him. Also, as you may noticed from his multiple appearances, he is actually jealous as all hell that there's somebody better than him, both physically and as a person. Deep down, he knows he belongs with supervillains like Joker and Sinestro, but is in denial.

When you see Star Wars, will it be release date order, or time line order? and will it include the side movies and animated shows?
Ive always wanted to see some one Start with Rouge One then follow it with episode 4. I would also enjoy some one seeing the cartoons especially the 2D Clone Wars ones. And I would also enjoy some one seeing the Star Wars Parody stuff. And also Star Trek shows, cartoons and movies.
superman vs the elite answers some of your questions too
For me this was watched after knowing of but not reading the comic . Over all Not nearly as depressing as other movies and I like it better then the remake but the remake puts a lot more in to its story. Some of my favorite stories are ones you have not seen yet but at the time it came out it was really good.

Doomsday is Superman's greatest fear because he acts more like a force of nature than a living being. Doomsday can't be threatened or talked down or negotiated with or made to see reason. The only way to stop him is to kill him and that's why Superman is so afraid of him, because he forces Superman to cross that thin line.

EDIT: Removed the pesky movie request I keep commenting but still wanna give my thoughts on this specific film)
Superman vs Doomsday is a fairly okay film but I think it didn't adapt the original comic that well (especially the post-death story) and I think Doomsday would've felt like a bigger threat if the other JL members were present as well during the initial attack

    Some context from other media:
In the early 90s, Lois and Clark had been dating for a while, and the plan at DC Comics was to have them get married. At the same time, there was a live-action TV show called _Lois & Clark_ (also known in some places as "The New Adventures of Superman"), starring Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain, respectively, in the title roles, and the show's producers had pushed to be allowed to do a wedding storyline first, but they were a year or so away from getting to that point.
So, when trying to figure out how to fill a year's worth of comics, one of the editors working on Superman comics at the time jokingly suggested "Why don't we kill him?". "The Death of Superman" was an arc that ran from the end of December 1992 until October 1993, starting with the Doomsday creature tearing across the US, flattening the Justice League of the time, and eventually being defeated, apparently at the cost of Superman's life.
The issue where Superman actually "dies" became a collector's item, and prompted a speculator boom as rich investors bought up comics thinking they'd become more valuable... and then a bust as they realised that comics don't gain value like that.
The story is split into three: "Doomsday", wherein Superman fights Doomsday, "Funeral for a Friend", which deals with a world grieving the loss of Superman, and "Reign of the Supermen", where several new heroes appear, each claiming to be the new Superman in some way (this adaptation replaces the Supermen with a single Clone Superman)... which I'll say less about.
Once Superman returned properly at the end of the story (this is hardly a spoiler - Superman comics clearly didn't stop 30 years ago), the success of the storyline prompted a number of similar stories for many characters at DC, starting with "Batman: Knightfall" (which was also a response to the popularity of ultra-violent, deadly vigilante anti-hero types in the comics at the time), leading to a few heroes dying (some of whom came back immediately, while others didn't get resurrected for _years_), and even Marvel tried to get in on that kind of story, with the infamous "Clone Saga" in Spider-Man comics.
A more comics-faithful version (not completely, but closer) of this story was also adapted in the DC Animated Movie Universe in two movies: The Death of Superman (2018) and Reign of the Supermen (2019). Further, many characters introduced during the story have become enduring fan-favourites in their own right.

Unfortunately all these versions of Doomsday fail to catch the idea of the original in the comics. Not even the more recent The Death of Superman animated movie, It's much better than this one but there is still something missing. Also as some pointed here in the 1st half of The Death saga in comics the Justice League was helping him...best said, he started helping the League and ended alone.
Regarding the clone, Lex wasn't forcing him to kill Toyman. As Lex said he has the same morals as Superman but lacks all Clark learnt in his childhood. The clone only has embeded in his mind all that is of common knowledge about Superman but nothing of what isn't common knowledge.

James Marsters is our daddy. But yeah it's very odd seeing Marsters voicing Lex Luthor as he plays a really cool character in Smallville and of course Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I do really like the art style of this film slight Animated Series vibes more so The Justice League minus the really cool retro futurism Art Deco Metropolis. That's one of the more negative things about alot of the non DCAU stuff Metropolis for the most parts ends up looking like a typical city and even alot of DC stuff has Gotham looking pretty boring as well such as the whole DCAMU line up of movies. The Batman series, Long Halloween, Under the Red Hood, Lego Batman Movie, and Batman: Gotham Knight these nail Gotham though.
Man of Tomorrow, DCAU, and the new Suicide Squad game are the only media's that really have a good rendition of Metropolis. Hopefully with James Gunn's Superman movie we get to see Metropolis brought to life like we see in the DCAU. But nontheless the stories are still fun even if the cities can be a little disappointing.

Any time I see Superman in a romantic situation, I’m reminded of Niven’s “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex” essay. If don’t know it, it has a Wikipedia entry which has a link to a copy of it online. It’s…not a G-rated essay. :)

With all this clone Superman going on, I wish they'd have went all the way and just had him become Bizarro, it's always fun having backwards talking misshapen Superman. Oh yeah, you goddamn right we get the black costume and mullet hair

This doomsday was better than the new movie even if that was more comic accurate

I would say "The Death of Superman" does this way better
The Death of Superman is a DCAMU (Dc animated movie universe) movie, and probably one of the best ones, i'm not a big fan of the rest of the movies besides the Superman one and Flashpoint

Watch the newer Death of Superman movie. It's so much better.

I want to recommend the injustice video game and comics but I think you should learn more about the other dc characters and the world of dc first

As for dark selves, I write short stories in my free time and I'm pretty sure I already have a supervillain dark self. He uses traps and poison (jigsaw-esque). He's an embodiment of nihilism at its worst. Nothing you do matters, so why not just give in to all the worst impulses you have. You can inflict the pain you have on everyone else so you should. Make them understand that the world is nothing more than a cruel series of random occurrences. There is no justice, there is no reason.

Hope you get around to watching All-Star Superman. Which is based on what's considered one of the best Superman stories.
Also, the voice of Superman's robot is provided by Tom Kenny, aka SpongeBob!
(Evil Superman may be new to you, but the rest of us are tired of it at this point.)

Superman does die in the comics. There is a game that shows what would happen if the superheros killed called injustice gods among us. In the comics Superman did keep the long hair for a bit but people hateded it.

This movie and Superman: The Movie are the best Superman movies Man of Steel and Superman Returns in my opinion are the worst they get Superman's character all wrong they portray Superman as dark and edgy which he isn't he's the most wholesome superhero ever I mean his mom made his suit that's more wholesome than any Disney film come on how can they screw up Superman? Also how could they screw up Henry Cavill playing Superman? He's the nicest dude ever the role of Superman was meant for him but instead of playing Superman he played Homelander
