If they tour again go!! You will not be disappointed. If I could add a clip of last years concert I would. They are amazing and sound the same. They never stop touring or playing. ❤
As usual, you guy have your timelines all mixed up. :)The Cure were "Gothic" before they went mainstream... New Wave is a post punk movement, as is Gothic, so they have lots in common, and Joy Division may have been the first to do it. Listen to "The Hanging Garden" or "A Forest", for early darker Cure. It's amazing.
The Cure were probably at their “gothiest” peak of darkness during the era of the albums Seventeen Seconds and Pornography. Through the strength of their music and songwriting, they managed to keep a lot of that core audience as they moved into more mainstream territory. The cool thing is they legitimately fit in both of those worlds. They wee never trying to be something they weren’t.
I think because of the asthetics, people who are unaware assume goth is some kind of extreme or hard metal when sonically it’s pretty melodic at its core.
Fun Fact: Robert Smith was in the throes of love when he wrote this song. His girlfriend, Mary Poole, he met when he was 14; in 1988, a year after "Just Like Heaven" was released, they got married, and it stuck. - This Song Was On Rock Band 3.
I love playing it on RB3!! Robert used to live in Crawley, round the corner from my Mum. When I visited her in school holidays, I'd always try to spot him 😂
I didn't know Robert was from Crawley!! Born in London in 1956, my parents relo'ed to Crawley when I was one. My 3 next siblings were born there. We emigrated to Canada in 1964. Saw the Cure north of Toronto in the mid-80s. It poured during the opening act, 10,000 Maniacs, and there were all these forlorn bedraggled young goths wandering around hoping to borrow some hairspray. Robert came out in a buzzcut. 😮 Great show nonetheless. 😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Glad you guys are listening to one of my fave bands. The Cure started in 1978-79. They’ve been around a while. Just like heaven and Friday I’m in love are their most mainstream, popular songs. A majority of their songs are very dark, moody and have a heavy goth sound. Another band I recommend you guys see live. Phenomenal 🖤🖤
I walked down the aisle to this song. It'll always be beautiful to me. One of The Cure's darkest album Pornography was released in 1982. They mixed it up all throughout their career. Although I don't think Robert ever agreed to the gothic title.
Yeah 80's was the best, innocent and carefree, we all had such hopes for the future and the music was banging, it was a blast! Love this song, great reaction guys!
This song is from 1987, the first gothic song by The Cure is probably from 1980 ('A Forest'). But of course you are probably thinking of the Disintegration era (1989) which included hit songs like 'Lullaby', Lovesong' or 'Fascination Street' when you talk about them becoming gothic after being new wave (which they did for a short period in 1982)
You guys are awesome!!! Can you react to a classic from the begginings of The Cure? I'm talking about 'Boys don"t Cry' it will blow your minds how they were way ahead of time, especially when this song was released in1979.
If you want to dive into the darker side of The Cure, a good place to start would be a live version of "A Forest". A live version of "100 Years" is also good. Even better, check out both from "The Cure in Orange". They're played back to back and go together like milk & cookies. That concert was about a year before Just Like Heaven came out.
The Cure had some dark stuff early on - Faith (1981) is a fantastic album, melancholy rather than dark - 'All cats are grey' for example. I also love 'Cold' from the Pornography album. Apparently this period was the typical rock 'n' roll cliche - burn out from touring, depression and drugs. Fortunately they got through it and their susbsequent work became more upbeat and commercial. I really don't get this obsession with precise genres, music and people are much more complicated than that - unless they are purely driven by commercial forces. Cheers.
They had dalliances with darkness in their first album - although prevalently pop punk. But the second album, Seventeen seconds, was like the first goth album ever. Check out A Forest from that album for a taste of early darkness
Early? That depends on how you define it. This is from 1987, which is 7 studio albums (about 9 years) into The Cure, with another 6 studio albums after it (from 1989 to 2008), and their most recent tour was in 2023. You could call it early in one sense, or mid way in another sense, but The Cure was quite solidly established by that point. So, by usual standards, I don’t think it’s considered “early”.
The Cure is a deep rabbit hole and the Post-Punk/Goth/New Wave(not polar opposites at all) rabbit hole is even deeper. All three are my favorite genres of music(almost indistinguishable and formed together feeding off of one another, though you can argue Post-Punk came first). Please jump down both rabbit holes and enjoy.
Burn by The Cure from the soundtrack for The Crow is a GREAT song! I don't think they released it anywhere else. I'm not the biggest fan of them but they have a lot of good songs for sure
This is "The Cure" at their poppiest. Delve into their early stuff, especially "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography"...brilliant and dark stuff!
Certain guitar tones are just synonymous with a band. For example: you can hear one note from Slash or Eddie Van Halen and know what band is about to play. I love the guitar tone in songs by The Cure like this one, "In Between Days" and "Pictures of You".
I suggest “Master and Servant” (the slavery whip mix is my favorite) by Depeche Mode or anything by Erasure (Vince Clarke was in Depeche Mode, Yaz(oo) and is currently with Andy Bell in Erasure). Another is “I Before E, Except After C” or “In My Room” (both Yazoo/Yaz albums are AMAZING!!!!).
If I wear to move I'd totally miss the mountains and all the greenery here!!! Not the rain tho! Too much rain! But beautiful springs and fall months. I'd also miss the "artsy" side/scene around here and the murals and of course my friends I've made when I moved here❤️
One of the best songs ever from one of the best bands ever! When they were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Trent Reznor was the one doing it for them! He had always decried the Hall for celebrating others and not the Cure. And his speach is amazing!
Also like someone said he wroite this for the person who became his wife. And he had written a few songs for her Including Pictures of You when the house they had caught fire! He went back in and got the most important thing to him, a picture album of her and him!
My old band covered this song and we were trying to come up with a band name, so we settled on The Dizzy Edge...also in Philly, a popular club cover band named themselves Stange as Angels back in the day, has to be from here!
Morning fellas! I only know a few cure songs(my fav being "pictures of you".) I was introduced to this style of music by my friend Imelda who was a mod (same as goth I guess just the word they used for goth girls where I grew up in Salinas California early 90s)anyways,she loved the cure and Morrisy. I have always thought that the cure has a catchy sound to it that draws you into the music and has a unique style...🙂🤓
Thanks for the 80s nostalgia trip guys with The Cure who have endured more than most. If you are looking for darker from them check out the "Lullaby" or "Close to You" videos. For more UK 80s classics surely I'm not the first to ask for "Two Tribes" from Frankie Goes to Hollywood but I can't see it on your playlist. If any song has your name on it to react to it's that! The intro is epic and the video though comedic is strangely prescient in these times. Perhaps you can have it playing in the background when doing the trivia as the chorus lyrics are "When two tribes go to war/A point is all you can score". You got to do it my friends!
The Welcome To The Pleasuredome albums are a masterpiece for the ages from side 1 to the end of side 4. Not a bad song on it. It's got some interesting cover tunes as filler but they pull them off nicely.
I like three The Cure songs. I think you guys would vibe better with Lullaby. It's wonderful and more low-key. That's my favorite. Then Lovesong. Then Just Like Heaven
their earlier work, earlier than this, is my favorite. check out PRIMARY, A FOREST, JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE’s TRAIN, CATIPPILLAR, THE WALK, KILLING AN ARAB… this list goes on. to me they were dark from the beginning, if not darker.
Imagine a song titled "Fascination Street" and you found out it was written by The Cure. What would that sound like? "Fascination Street" preferably off the "Mixed Up" album.
I gotta say, as someone with a deep connection to my birthplace, I have indeed struggled to adapt to the environment of my new home. Went back to my old hometown after being away 2 months, got the familiar feel of the paving slabs and cobblestones under my feet, grabbed drinks at my old haunts, and I was back. 😊
I played this song for my Mama when she passed hoping she'd find her way with one of her favorite songs. I still can't listen to it. It's okay though, she needed it more.
Go backwards for darker Cure. The 1982 Pornography lp is pretty bleak. Songs like 100 years, the Figurehead and Hanging Garden are good examples of their early darker side.
Autistic people are behind a shitload of major human technological and artistic endeavors. Robert Smith could very well be autistic, but his special interest either way would always be Mary, his wife.
If they tour again go!! You will not be disappointed. If I could add a clip of last years concert I would. They are amazing and sound the same. They never stop touring or playing. ❤
Still my favorite band! Since 1981!😊
As usual, you guy have your timelines all mixed up. :)The Cure were "Gothic" before they went mainstream... New Wave is a post punk movement, as is Gothic, so they have lots in common, and Joy Division may have been the first to do it. Listen to "The Hanging Garden" or "A Forest", for early darker Cure. I'm glad someone else said this. Sometimes I get annoyed and don't want to comment because I can come off as an asshole when I do.
💯👏👏👏

Through the strength of their music and songwriting, they managed to keep a lot of that core audience as they moved into more mainstream territory. Also When It Comes To Mainstream Their Fan Base Was So Vast Mainstream Radio Were Forced To Air Them!!
And then he wrote Lovesong for their wedding!
I love playing it on RB3!! Robert used to live in Crawley, round the corner from my Mum. When I visited her in school holidays, I'd always try to spot him 😂
Great role models
I didn't know Robert was from Crawley!! Born in London in 1956, my parents relo'ed to Crawley when I was one. My 3 next siblings were born there. We emigrated to Canada in 1964. Saw the Cure north of Toronto in the mid-80s. 😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
I admire, respect and adore that Robert and his wife have such a solid marriage and relationship ...its awesome not to mention quite rare anymore
Glad you guys are listening to one of my fave bands. The Cure started in 1978-79. They’ve been around a while. Just like heaven and Friday I’m in love are their most mainstream, popular songs. Hey the Cure have just dropped 2 new songs after 16 years...love to hear your take on them.
Timeless song. Makes me think I’m at a high school dance in the 80s. Such innocence
This may be the best "single," period. It's a perfect pop song
I can’t fault it
Haha true. It’s not “early Cure” it’s Peak Cure. This is the one they’ll be remembered for more than the others.
I walked down the aisle to this song. It'll always be beautiful to me. One of The Cure's darkest album Pornography was released in 1982. They mixed it up all throughout their career. Although I don't think Robert ever agreed to the gothic title.
That guitar riff still gets to me to this day.!!
One of the very first guitar licks I learned when I was starting out on guitar. ❤️
You guys should hit up Boys Don't Cry next. An absolute masterpiece.
Love The Cure
One of the best to ever do it. Robert is sublime
Yeah 80's was the best, innocent and carefree, we all had such hopes for the future and the music was banging, it was a blast! Love this song, great reaction guys!
I love that the title of the song first appears as the last line. Very creative.
Virginia plain. Up the junction. Come on, who's got more? 😂
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode, Would? - Alice in Chains.

Next up from The Cure, preferably in time for Halloween: Burn, from The Crow Soundtrack?
If you want to dive into the darker side of The Cure, a good place to start would be a live version of "A Forest". A live version of "100 Years" is also good. Even better, check out both from "The Cure in Orange". They're played back to back and go together like milk & cookies. That concert was about a year before Just Like Heaven came out.

The Cure are post-punk. I saw them again live in 2024! Best show ever
They were originally considered Dark Wave.
1979 first album is Punk. Punk Era, This is 1989.
They had dalliances with darkness in their first album - although prevalently pop punk. But the second album, Seventeen seconds, was like the first goth album ever. Check out A Forest from that album for a taste of early darkness

Perfect love song , amazing vocals , he is amazing and totally authentic
What's up GENTLEMEN ... I pop in here and there but seldom chat y'all ROCK thanks for the content
There's nothing to argue here, Post-Punk was definitely first, gothic and new wave developed from it.
Burn by The Cure from the soundtrack for The Crow is a GREAT song! I don't think they released it anywhere else. I'm not the biggest fan of them but they have a lot of good songs for sure
Katie Melua does a very good acoustic version. It’s been played at weddings
Dinosaur Jr does the only Roberts Smith approved cover of this song.
This is "The Cure" at their poppiest. Delve into their early stuff, especially "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography"...brilliant and dark stuff!
This was NOT "early Cure".This was released in 1987, The Cure had been around for a decade by that point.
lol, as usual an enjoyable and entertaining analysis!🤘🏽😂
My sister was the female version of Robert Smith back in the day!! Cool older sis! She got me into the Cure!
Have you guys done Lullaby? The whisper-singing by Robert is sublime.
Just don't watch the video. One of the absolute worst ever made!
I heard “Lullaby” in the car the other day and literally thought “I wish the Trash Talkers would do more of The Cure.”
The Spiderman is having me, for dinner tonite.....
Certain guitar tones are just synonymous with a band. For example: you can hear one note from Slash or Eddie Van Halen and know what band is about to play. I love the guitar tone in songs by The Cure like this one, "In Between Days" and "Pictures of You".

The cure are great...i love this song in particular ❤ I'd miss the sound of the waves on a stormy night if i moved, I'd also miss the friendly people.
If I wear to move I'd totally miss the mountains and all the greenery here!!! Not the rain tho! Too much rain! But beautiful springs and fall months. I'd also miss the "artsy" side/scene around here and the murals and of course my friends I've made when I moved here❤️
Please check out “100 years” such a great song
One of the best songs ever from one of the best bands ever! When they were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Trent Reznor was the one doing it for them! He had always decried the Hall for celebrating others and not the Cure. And his speach is amazing!

Pomme de terre! I knew that one 🥔
I would miss pierogies lol. Not everybody has them!
Dinosaur Jr do a brilliant cover version of this
My old band covered this song and we were trying to come up with a band name, so we settled on The Dizzy Edge...also in Philly, a popular club cover band named themselves Stange as Angels back in the day, has to be from here!
In Between Days is another of the my favorite Cure tunes. Thanks!
Love that " this is a song about oxytocin" smokey! Lol. True dat!!
Burn, from the crow soundtrack is a particular favourite of mine, but you wouldn’t go wrong picking any of the songs listed in the comments
Thanks for the 80s nostalgia trip guys with The Cure who have endured more than most. If you are looking for darker from them check out the "Lullaby" or "Close to You" videos. AFI covered this live at The Cure tribute show.. and that was my first experience with it.
The instrument, the music just sounds so good on this song it’s perfection imo
Robert Smith sounds the same on the Korn Unplugged.
I would miss the natural beauty. I live in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina!
I like three The Cure songs. I think you guys would vibe better with Lullaby. It's wonderful and more low-key. That's my favorite. Then Lovesong. Then Just Like Heaven
Y'all should DEFINITELY listen to meshuggah - new millennium cyanide Christ, it is one of THE grooviest songs i have Ever heard, 🙏
I love that video 😆
Someone coined the genre name “Dark Wave” to apply to groups like them and Depeche Mode.
Goldfinger does a great cover of this song in a pop punk style
This song is just pure nostalgia for me. I was never huge into the cure but this song just makes me smile and takes me back to the 80's.
Definitely takes you back to 80s...hanging at mall
Every generation has bad bands you’re forced to suffer, and great bands that change your world. The cure changes your world
Great way to start my morning. Instant smile on my face.
for a goth guy Smith wrote some of the most lovely pop songs
I love the Cure and this song is so heavenly.
This Is High School Goths Smoking In The Yard Listening To Their Walkmans!!
The cure disintegration might be one of the best albums ever made….listen to the same deepwater as you…youll feel like your entering a dream
Wonderful song
Oooooh! i love The Cure💜🖤💜
The stacked intro to this song is classic
Band - Joy Division. Song - Love Will Tear Us Apart.
This is the classic 4 chord progression that's in thousands of pop songs, not in the slightest bit gothic, but i still love it!
This is their 7th album, so it's not that early
Love The Cure. Listen to their acoustic version and also Katie Melua’s version it is stunning. ❤
their earlier work, earlier than this, is my favorite. check out PRIMARY, A FOREST, JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE’s TRAIN, CATIPPILLAR, THE WALK, KILLING AN ARAB… this list goes on. to me they were dark from the beginning, if not darker.
Lullaby by The Cure
A one way ticket to Creepyville & A MUST SEE/HEAR Classic,, The Cure "Lullaby"
(Official Music Video A MUST!!) 🔥
Fyi. Goth tend to LOVE new wave. You'll often hear new spun at goth clubs.
80s music just rules…
Love this song!
each layer is a masterpiece in its own right
Fear Factory!!!! Powershifter!!!!!
So nostalgic 😊
He. Had the poster in the room this way there in hull of fame
Ferris Bueller took place in Chicago and nobody talked with an accent!!!!
love The Cure!
Concrete Blonde - God is a Bullet or Everybody Knows written by Lenard Cohen
My wife and I danced to this at our wedding
They were darkest in the early days not later , lol , their darkest album is Pornography which came out in 1982, Just Like Heaven is from 1987
Both new wave and gothic are offspring of the post-punk movement.
Robert Smith singing about his love for his wife. Still are happily married.
Now you need to do Dinosaur Jr's version of it...
The album Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me is a great album but the next album after that, Disintegration, might be the best album of the 80’s.
I played this song for my Mama when she passed hoping she'd find her way with one of her favorite songs. I still can't listen to it. It's okay though, she needed it more.
Have you listened to lullaby by the cure?
Next song The Cure ''Love Song'' please
Please do Family by Badflower or Spotlight by Future Leaders of the World
Go backwards for darker Cure.
The Cure were never New Wave
good but not their best
