Two months ago I bought an used EF 70-200 f/4 L for $9,900 mexican pesos ($574 USD) and I knew I had to keep searching for used L lenses. Now I'm waiting for the mailman to deliver the 17-40 f/4 which I bought for like $340 USD on facebook marketplace. Can't wait to use it with my EOS RP! Greetings from México!
I have it too. Bought a used lens very cheaply, and in perfect condition. Not the sharpest lens but colours and contrasts are outstanding. And the autofocus is brilliant, especially paired with the new Canon mirrorless cameras. It’s a really great travel lens.
I agree, it's a brilliant lens. I have one and then got the 16-35 f/4 which is sharper. But the 17-40 is excellent value now. So sharp, I've taken photos of people at 17mm then cropped to 50mm equivalent and you can still see incredible detail, and that was on my old 5D mk II. One small point, not all L series are naturally dust and droplet proof, the 24-70 f/4 needs a filter attached.
Yea I agree, but that is good to mention about the water and dust. I also think it's usually just good measure to have something like a uv filter attached just to be safe. The glass is scratch resistant but not perfect. Thanks for the comment!
I run 2 5d mark ii bodies, but my 24-70 lives on one. (70-200 is on standby to go on the second body with a battery grip.) I'm just now realizing this is taking up space in my bag but I don't think I've used it yet. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love my 17-40. Combined with the Canon R it is a great travel lens especially in places where you may not have enough room to back up to get the full image. It had daily use last fall on a 7 week trip to Portugal and Madeira and will be again with me on an upcoming 3 week trip to the Andalucia region of Spain.
@jeffreysproule I'm a bird photographer mainly so wouldn't go that far!! Lol...I am good but not 40mm good!! But as an urban travel lens it definitely has my vote as a good companion to a 70-200 or 70-300 (my preference).
I am thinking of using the EOS R and 17-40/4 on a 6 week trip to Australia & New Zealand. My concern is the size and weight of adapted EF lenses. If I may ask, what other lenses did you pack? Did you take 2 camera bodies? thanks in advance. thumbs up.
@smalltalk.productions9977 so both Portugal and Spain along with the 17-40 I had the ef 70-300 L. It was a compact system. As a follow-up to this year's travel, France and Italy I am going to charge things at least for France since it will be a bird photography trip. I will be taking the RF 24-240 (have not bought it yet) and RF 100-500. Camera body will be the Canon R.
It would be pretty good. I found the sweet spot for cars is around 35-50mm. If you shoot the cars completely wide open at 17mm you may get some unwanted distortion that wouldn't show the cars features properly.
Hey Jeffery! Really thinking about buying this lens! I’ve got an R6 and need something wider than my 24-105.. would you buy this lens if you were me? also have a 70-200 2.8
I would! I use this lens all the time. The lens does get a bad wrap for softness toward the corners of the lens but for the price it's a great lens. 17mm is very wide and very useful!
Thank you very much for the video ! 👌I am considering a Canon EOS 90D with a EF-S 18-135mm IS USM or a Canon EF 17-40mm F/4.0 L USM. I don't know which one is the best for video making in studio 🤔 I record video tutorials so I don't need a big zoom. I just need the lens to focus very fast and high quality picture. I record with external microphones so the noise is not my main concern. Thanks.
I would go with the 18-135 is usm. Since that lens is EF-S it will be a true 18-135mm. If you use the 17-40mm on an EOS 90D there will be a 1.2x crop on the lens since its a APSC sensor. So the 17mm would actually be 27.2mm. Happy shooting!
Just for people who are looking on this video for lense advice like I was, this information is not accurate. EF-S lense focal lengths are given in their Full Frame equivalent so you still need to apply any crop factor. For Canon APS-C bodies like the 90D, that's 1.6x not 1.2x. so the EF-S 18-135mm would be approx. a 30-216mm lense.
No, the image stableization in the camera works great. The only time it's a bit annoying is if you're shoot wide open video. The corners of the video tend to get a digital wobble if you have shakey hands.
but if both lens and camera has IS then that means image will be much more stable then right? as opposed to just camera or lens being the only Image stabilizer? @@jeffreysproule
@steveolesen8033 I disagree, it's a great lens, it has its short falls with loss of quality to the edges but overall it's worth the price. It's worth it for the weather sealing alone and build quality.

Those are some great prices! I'm still looking for some more ef glass to add to my own collection!

I love it, its great to have just to toss in your bag and not have to baby it too much. Thanks for watching!

Love the shots you did and lighting in the background
Thanks so much man, I appreciate it! 🙏
Yes it is! Works great on a R series cameras with an adapter.
I love it! 😀
I've needed a wideangle for (every now and then) milkyway and landscape. Lust bought ohne used, really as good as new, for 265 bucks. No brainer
Yeah you really can't go wrong with the price! Thanks for watching!
Just picked one up second hand for UK £225 couldn't resist it for that price.
You're gonna love it!
Im thinking about buying one for car photography, would it be a good choice?

Thank you so much!
A boom mic is technically a shotgun mic.
Not necessarily. You can use any mic type on a boom.
If it doesn’t have image stabilization but my canon r6 does, does it matter if the lens doesn’t have it?

I believe so
@@stevocanuck but, if I'm not mistaken, EF lenses with IS get a cropped image on the mirrorless full frame
If a lens is a full frame EF lens put on a full frame mirrorless camera, it’ll be a full frame image, regardless if it has IS on the lens or not.
Its more than 300 to 600 ...
Not here in canada, unless you're buying this new.
I guess if you're interested in a good $75 lens
if you can find this lens for 75 bucks that's awesome, because here in Canada you're not going to find it for that price.
@@jeffreysproule it's not worth any more than that lol
