I bought it for $ 600/- new three years ago. Use it exclusively for landscape shots with my Canon 5D Classic and 5DII. Occasionally used for group portraits.
The 16-35 F4 is much sharper at the corners! I guess it all depends what you want to use it for, if it’s just vlogging or personal use, I think this is still a great option for those who are on a tighter budget :)
I know I’m late but I still use this lense in 2024 with my Canon c70 with the speed booster. It becomes a 17-40mm 2.8 but, I mainly use as a 24mm 2.8 since my 24mm 1.4 becomes a 17mm 1.2 😂😂 it’s weird because of the 0.71x booster
Awesome video! I just picked up this lens second hand for $350 usd and I think is a great lens. Like you, I’m new to the world of photography/cinematography and trying to start a channel as well. Keep up the good work.
Erpre_ thanks! If you’re shooting with an crop sensor camera, the sigma 18-35 is definitely the way to go (the only thing is it’s heavier and more expensive). If you’re planning to upgrade to full frame eventually, the 17-40 is great value! 👍 can’t go wrong with either!
Crop works fine, but I would keep in mind that the depth of field won't be as shallow as if you were using the whole sensor and zooming in optically. But I guess that doesn't matter as much for an ultra-wide angle lens. I still find the 4k video to be very high quality.
Hmm... I think since the 250D is a crop sensor camera, this lens doesn't have IS and the cropped focal length would be 28mm-56mm (full frame equivalent) - you'd be better off getting a standard lens with image stabilization such as the Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS
Hi,Great content,Im planning to buy this lens on my eosr?shuold i need the adaptor for eosr or i can use the free adaptor from the eosr kit?Thank you..
Hi Abed, this being an older lens with a USM autofocus motor it's not going to be as quiet as a STM motor lens. However if you want to vlog with it you can look into getting a shotgun microphone (directional) which can be placed on top of the hot shoe which should help a bit. Another option is to use a lavelier microphone so you don't pick up as much noise. Hope this helps!
I just got a 6dmkii and was looking at this and the 16-35 but everyone says the 16-35 f4 is the way to go but it is way more expensive but is it way better or that much better to warrant the difference...
The 17-40 is definitely a bargain if you're looking for a solid ultra-wide angle lens. Also depends if you're going to use it for video because the IS would be really helpful!
Hey I am struggling currently with finding a good budget lens for my canon crop sensor camera to shoot overhead recipe videos.. can you please please suggest me a good lens for overhead recipe videos that look like tasty videos..
Hi Masala, do you happen to know if your camera is a DSLR or a mirrorless camera? I’d suggest a lightweight zoom lens to start! Looks like you already have some overhead camera. I’d recommend getting better lighting before the lens for what you’re doing :)
Kyle Wong hey, thanks for responding.. it’s a DSLR 1200d canon crop sensor. I’m currently using my phone to shoot overhead videos and it gets pretty hot by the end of the cooking 😄.. I really have no clue which wide angle lens will give me crisp video quality 🤷🏻♀️
It would depend on your budget, but you could start off with the kit lens 18-55mm which would work just fine. I would still recommend getting a good light and soft box! 🤗
Kyle Wong hey thanks a ton.. I’ll use the kit lens.. yes, I am thinking about getting a soft box.. even I’ve noticed how the video turns magical with natural light as compared to the kitchen light 🙈.. I’ll buy a soft box soon.. Thanks a million 🙏🏻😁🤗🎥
This lens is pretty poor performing because of the corner distortion, its very hard to impossible to get a sharp shot. Also, you need a lot of light to use it. F4 is rough, especially when you have to get to f7 to get some sharpness
Yeah there is a lot corner distortion, but I find that for photography, you can easily correct it in Lightroom. Also I don't worry too much about corner sharpness cause I normally never frame my subject(s) in the corner. I think it depends what you're using this lens for. If you're doing real estate photography I wouldn't be shooting at f4 anyways and would probably be using an off camera flash if it's interior. If you're using this for video, depending on what you're shooting it might not be the right choice. Of course this lens won't be state of the art, but it's a great option if you're looking for a budget ultra wide angle lens for full frame with weather sealing.
It's good value for money if you have IS on camera body, otherwise the lens it self doesn't have IS. That's why 16-35 it's better value for money and a bit better quality.
For video, IS would be helpful, but I found canon's digital IS is not half bad. For photos, most times you don't need IS since this is an ultra wide angle lens.

Good deal! It's a very versatile lens!
I was tempted but the edges and corners are very soft! I went for the 16-35 f4 and that is a next level lens

Great insights to the lens. Definitely gonna look into it! Keep creating brotha👊
Kevin Exconde thanks Keven! Really appreciate the support!

Thanks Ken! It is a great value! You just gotta start, don't think too much! Thanks for your support 🙂
Good job explaining bro! Might grab this one or the 18-35mm 1.8 sigma art . Thank you!

What about for 4k video on the EOS R? Does it work better for the crop!
Crop works fine, but I would keep in mind that the depth of field won't be as shallow as if you were using the whole sensor and zooming in optically. But I guess that doesn't matter as much for an ultra-wide angle lens. I still find the 4k video to be very high quality.
Hi just came on ur video do you recommend this lens for videos
i got a canon 250D But looking to get this lens mainly for videos what do you think?
Hmm... I think since the 250D is a crop sensor camera, this lens doesn't have IS and the cropped focal length would be 28mm-56mm (full frame equivalent) - you'd be better off getting a standard lens with image stabilization such as the Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS

I believe if the adaptor comes with the EOS R, it should be the RF to EF adaptor which would allow you to use this lens.
Bruhhhh I got this is exactly as my first lens on my full frame :) good to know I made the right choice. nifty fifty too coz it's cheap
Haha yes! It's a great lens! :)
Dude, between this and the nifty, you're shootin' sharp man. REALLY good starting choices for real
just picked one up for 50$ currently in shipping and I couldn't even imagine the price for a fully operational L series lens
Hello i have a question, i just purchased one how do you vlog with it? The focus noise is picked easily by the camera
Hi Abed, this being an older lens with a USM autofocus motor it's not going to be as quiet as a STM motor lens. It's great for landscape photography. Even without IS, just mount it on a tripod.
What lens do you use for recording the video? 24mm f1.4?
I think I shot that with the sigma 35mm 1.4
I just got a 6dmkii and was looking at this and the 16-35 but everyone says the 16-35 f4 is the way to go but it is way more expensive but is it way better or that much better to warrant the difference...

@@KyleCWong I don't do video,.mainly pics
@@michaelclld Then the 17-40 is a great option!

I like it I bought it today thx 😊☺Kyle
Works on r10?
Great information, but try to improve your hand movement. You’re constantly pointing at your right hand.
Noted! Thanks for your feedback!
Suddenly I want to buy a 17-40 F4L!
you should!
got mine for 300€ in great condition ;)
Awesome review, but I couldn't help but laugh cuz your background music is the same as Ryan George's it's the 90s series XD
Love the CA on the lens. :D Still great value though.
mirasga it is great value! Anyways for ultra wide angle lenses I tend not to pixel peep as much 😂

Really awesome!
Thanks Herb! :)
No image stabilization
hand movements are disturbing bro ...i am drawn to your one hand ... other than that nice quality vid
Thanks for your feedback! I'll keep that in mind for future videos
Awesome video review bro, just a tip.. keep your hands down when you speaking cause it distracts your content a bit. cheers!
Thanks for watching Daniel, I'll keep that in mind!
It is useless because it does not have IS
