Fuji X-T3 Autofocus and James Bond: Focus Pulls and Eye AF WORK!

  • On the most circuitous route ever to Photokina, we start in England and move on to Switzerland, where I remember that as a kid I wanted to be James Bond. Which has what, exactly, to do with the X-T3 and AF?
    Well, this show was a narrow escape involving a pile of Aston Martins, including three development cars for the DB 11.
    I can't begin to tell you how challenging it is for me to do reviews from the road. I usually take weeks or MONTHS to sort through what I'm thinking, and then spend days editing, doing pick-up shots -- you know the drill. Still, what's clear to me is that the X-T3's AF is excellent: Eye AF in continuous mode works well and you CAN get smooth focus pulls - as long as you futz with the parameters and frame the shot to minimize distractions.
    Bottom line? The X-T3's AF sets a new standard in crop sensor camera AF, and provides all the AF capability needed for what we do at 3BMEP.
    But I still don't like futzing.
    And I'm still not quite sure about the linear motors.
    All talking head segments shot with Eye AF in continuous focus mode.
    Aargh - forgot to mention the Rennveg scene shot in Etern, light grade.
    Big shouts-out to:

    Please note that you are using the Fuji 35mm F1.4 which is one of the worst when it comes to AF, very slow. If you don't need the extra light stop, you could use the F2 version which is way faster, silent etc.

    hi. Can you help me with a problem I've been having. Recording interviews (seated subject) using X-T3 with 35mm f2. AF set to eye detect. The focus 'pulses' during the interview making the footage almost unusable. It doesn't focus behind the subject, just a slight blip then back to the eye. The image doesn't really go out of focus but its noticeable to me. The AF-C setting is _2 sensitivity -5 speed. What did I do wrong? I also notice my AF-S setting won't work. the only way to achieve that is AF-M and press the AF-L button to lock focus. Any advice really appreciated. Thanks.

    I am a Nikon shooter with my D610 and I am considering going mirrorless mainly to reduce size and weight in lenses. I currently have these lenses: Sigma art 35, Nikkor 50 and 85 1.8G, Tokina 17-35 and Nikkor 24-120.
    Photography is a serious hobby but not my job. I do mainly studio, portrait and real estate photography. I am tempting to switch to the new fuji x-t3. Would I loose quality going to Fuji? I also considered Sony A7iii but lenes are too expensive and Z6 does not attract me by the reviews I have seen.

    Saw your post and questions on your Patreon page regarding the X-T3's AF and video performance and the "if only" comments about the X-H1. I'm in full agreement with you on this point, Hugh. Which begs the question: why did Fujiflm release the X-H1 when it did, only 6 months prior to the X-T3? I've thought about this particular question quite a lot and the most important reason I can come up with is...they *had* to. They had to have a stiff and strong enough body with IBIS on-market when the Fujiflm 200mm f/2.0 and XF mount MK Cine lenses were released for sale, which happened before the X-T3 was announced/released. No matter as far as I am concerned: the X-H1 puts out the highest outright absolute image quality I've seen from any interchangeable lens X-cam, which is really saying something. Whether it outresolves the X-T3 will remain to be seen, but the overall image quality & detail I get from the X-H1 for stills is just....stunning. It's GFX50S-like. And I love its body, grip, controls, ergos, shutter, and handling. I think once Fujifilm puts the BSI sensor and X-Processor 4 from the X-T3 into the X-H2, we are going to have an *_absolutely spectacular_* camera on our hands. Have fun at Photokina! All best, Stephen

    Your ND filter probably doesn't cut IR anywhere near as well as it does the visible spectrum, hence the weird color shifts...

  • @Avidcomp
    @Avidcomp 6 лет назад

    Hi. Regards the comment at the start - Color shift. IRND issue? If it is, as you probably know, different IRND's perform differently over different sensors. There are a few n the market that seem to have made great strides although the only two that come to mind might be TrueND and Firecrest - I'm not so up to date. And maybe it wasn't that after all.

    So with the proper amount of futzing the X-T3 is okay for a stationary video set-up. If you are on the go a gimbal in place of IBIS? Or wait for X-U2. Speaking of on the go, nice to you get out of your comfort zone and drop a video on the road.

    XT3 was the result of a slow and steady focus from fujifilm. You notice all these RUclips videos praising the XT3 now?
    It's funny because most of these people were the same people to criticize Fujifilm for making a subpar camera, but a generation behind Panasonic and Sony. I am happy for Three Blind Men though, because they have always tried to keep a positive influence and he has always stated that the XT2 was in his heart, but not quite there yet as a camera he needed. Notice how his vlog has increased dramatically in quality since they've used the XT3. They've even stated multiple times that they loved the camera but it wasn't for the work they needed. Apologies forgiven about the AF hunting and please continue with the exceptional narrative you provide.
    In fact, we should all be happy that Fujifilm has stepped their game up and were actually the first to pioneer 4K60P at an affordable price. Thank you Fujifilm for listening to people that had genuine feedback and ignoring the Sony fullframe, IBIS, and technology trolls.
    Maybe if you do a meetup or workshop in Boston one day, I can finally get to have a conversation with you.

    How is the autofocus/eye detection working with stills? I am contemplating switching to Fuji XT-3 from m4/3. No video work, mostly portrait, street and event photography. Sometimes background is busy. Does it mean the focus will be lost? I have no blind elephants who’d do the futzing for me, the camera function would have to be reliable.

    No ibis with a brand new body that touts it's video capabilities is a deal breaker for me. If Sony could fit really good ibis in my two year old Sony compact I paid $385 bucks for so can Fuji on their XT 3 or no sale to me. Plus it is not full frame. Another deal breaker in the market segment this competes in. Z6 or A7iii are better for me.

      I like the depth of field you get from standard full frame. I take flower and plant photos all the time. I have a full frame and APSC crop sensor Nikon. Using the same lens on both I just like the look I get from full frame. And I feel no interest in going up to Medium size. I used to have medium format film cameras and preferred full frame 35mm film. My 38 year old OM2n is still my favorite camera. I may buy one of the new Reflex 35mm film cameras. Removable back. Something needed in a film 35mm. I know off the subject but I am excited about trying the new Ektachrome finally released for sale yesterday. I love projecting huge pictures of the Grand Canyon and such with slide film. Even my OLED big screen does not have the color of slide film projected on a screen.

      F ab You are not wrong. IBIS was left out of the Panasonic GH5s for this very reason. But with this written - as I said - we’re willing to trade off ultimate smoothness for smallness: we’ll live with what the best IBIS can give us, rather than go the extra mile with a gimbal (at least, 95% of the time). The other 5% we have a Sony a6300. :)

    Hi Hugh, or should I call you James, welcome to Europe, at least this little bit, called England is still in Europe!, for now that is. Nice to know you are over here with us, I live just over the road in Cambridge. The lens you using has become my go-to lens most of the time, except when I need the long telephoto or macro lens (the 80mm), the focusing speed and accuracy on my XT2 is so so fast! never misses, never fails, the images are always so clear and sharp. I think that it is a very good example of just how variable lens performance is, while the 80mm macro is nearly as fast also the 50- 140, most of the other, older lenses are quite different, particularly the 56mm F1.2, it sounds like its using an old lawnmower engine!. I think it is only fair that you have to spend some time 'futzing' with settings, to get the best out of an XT3 will require some care and consideration, each and every lens is going to be different!, it can't know what you want, but it can deliver it, if you do the right things!. I have been saying lately that I won't be getting an XT3 just yet, not because I don't like it, not because it is somewhat better than the XT2, but simply because I feel that I still have so much to learn on the XT2, I've only had it for two years/8,000 shots, and I only do stills, I am still having to dump more than three quarters of the shots I take because I keep making small mistakes in settings or handling. I have handled an XT3 and look forward to being able to transition quickly when the time comes because it feels almost the same, (better grip), but until I get a better keeper rate the onus is on me, not the camera!. I still can hardly believe what its capable of!. Cheers, Richard.

      Farther along than given credit for. Granted this was done with a slow AF lens and before the firmware update. I own the A7III and the X-T3. Sony is still #1, but the X-T3 eye AF is damn good. This video not a great representation of its abilities. My biggest issue has always been the lack of IBIS on these cameras.

    Very good. 2.Things: 1. How are you getting that video so sharp? Is that straight out of the camera, into the video editor and uploaded? My videos never look that good! Is it me, my camera, my import settings haha. 2. How much of a factor would lack of IBIS affect your decision to use the camera as your first choice - I ask because the handheld shots at the Aston Martin place were a little shaky. Thanks for posting, informative and enjoyable as always.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 6 лет назад +1

      j p I doubt the "style" is what puts people off, but the firm opinions that do not allow for different priorities and different methods. Everything is a binary choice, no options of a gradient as in real life, very bad or very good being the only views of the world. The proof, as always, is in the results and you can't point to a single image he has done that you would allow on your gallery wall. He is a gear hobbyist and not a photographer so distills the sum total of a camera down to great or trash without allowing for his criteria has little relation to how a creative photographer creates. People using cameras he has trashed have created images that far surpass any of his snapshots. Using that criteria of results, he is wrong , dead wrong most of the time. His latest targe for hate is the z7 but it is surely doing to be used very effectively, having a lot going for it, and build quality at D850 or higher level, made in the assembly facility in Sendai that is devoted to top pro cameras, the D5. Even the D850 is made in Thailand. In trashing is because of having a single XQD he misleads the viewer about the significant superiority of that card system over his preferred SD slots. Mean Time Between Failure for that card system is BETTER than 2 SD cards, and ignores the fact that using that card allows for the ultimate in backup, 1000megabit per second wireless real time transfers over a 660-foot radius. Why have any card removeable when a pro can and direct transfer faster than a card reader full files directly to the editing computer? He is being dishonest for not mentioning that nor how that card allows clearing the buffer in 1 second resulting in a greater throughput than the camera he is pushing. These are just examples of errors and misleading statements.
      Hugh's reviews are "focused" on results, as creative creates with the hardware instead of details in isolation that overall makes no connection between a feature and results. A camera is a system much more than a collection of parts to be judged individually. The real value of a camera is how little it enters into the creative process.

    So XT3 or A7iii?

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 6 лет назад

      They are completely different cameras.If you plan on keeping it for a while, more than 1.5 years than definitely, the XT3 is the better investment because it is built to last, another of magnitude more rugged and reliable. The a7III hasa FF sensor which has some advantages for many types of images but its lenses are much more expensive so the total cost of ownership will be a lot higher even if the bodies are not that much different in price. The Sony is better in low light while the Fuji has far better ergonomics

    • @laeicawezlar4417
      @laeicawezlar4417 6 лет назад

      Stan SPb This is total crap! sony cameras will last just as other Canikon cameras will, my sony A7 1st gen is still going on and I dont baby my equipment. So do all of us a favour, dont talk something you either dont know or have experience with. Much more expensive? not really, especially when you factor equivalence. Ergonomics? well thats subjective, for a hybrid shooter (video + stills) I prefer Sony, for stills only I can relate if some people prefer Fuji. And yes, I have the Fuji and Sony system.

    • @VariTimo
      @VariTimo 6 лет назад

      Yes when I saw that you packed Syrp NDs in your packing video. B+W and Heliopan both make excellent vario NDs that are perfect for video because they both have hard stops so you never over crank them and get a X pattern. I used the B+W one on my M5 when I was doing street in New York with a Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM. Image quality from those pictures is really amazing. No color shift to speak of. But that’s film. I actually shot a 25min short film with the GH5s and the Heliopan vario ND (not the slim version, the slim version doesn’t have filter threats) and the image quality and color reproduction was outstanding. It didn’t produce any fog when shooting into the sun, unlike the one from Syrp. A bit of flare but nothing extensive or unpleasant. One advantage the Heliopan (again the not slim version) filter has over the B+W is that you’re simply able to use the lens cap of the lens your using (if you’re not stepping up), since it has a filter threat the same size the lens/filter has natively. The B+W one is one our two mm wider to avoid vignetting. Meaning you’d need a larger lens cap for the same lens. Hui this has gotten extensive. I could send you some images from my trip to New York with the B+W and some screen grabs of my GH5s Tests with the Heliopan filter. I also called Heliopan a few time because I had some questions I wanted answered after the Syrp situation and they where very forthcoming. Won’t help you much since there based in Germany. But it great to know when a company has personal at their phones who can answer nerdy questions.
