Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols, or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death's music-and band name-too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

Kid Rock: how did I not know about this
Because you're Kid Rock ......
I think the whole "Punk before it was Punk" thing was just saying that they came from a time when this music was starting to emerge, I don't think they're claiming to have come before The Stooges or MC5 or any other band from the era. Music is like a branch on a tree, not a straight line.
Only came here because I thought they were called "A Band Called Death" like "A Pimp Named Slickback" or "A Tribe Called Quest"
Los Saicos from Peru where from the 60's and they were the first Proto-punk band I ever heard thanks to my uncle when I was living in Peru
@James Wood chill out guy, he didn't day anything about who came first. Elitist.
Plenty played similar music at the time
It doesn't matter who was first. It's a shame that these guys weren't signed in 1975 because we all lost out on some really good music.
It does matter who was first to do something. Or this Black band wouldn’t be almost lost to history. White society has a racist and disgusting pattern of trying to erase Black American from the music that we created.
So true !!
Elijah Wood gets cooler everyday
They're great and really similar to Ramones actually.
But don't forget that the MC5 and Stooges first albums were from the '69.
but they started in 64
Death said that MC5 influenced them.
Why are you being so salty? It's just a documentary about the first punk band.
Shit, if you knew your music history you would know that top white artists/bands like the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley were all heavily influenced by Black musicians.
Without the black musicians those artists/bands wouldn't be here today.
Yeah and still the were not first punk band.
Saw this documentary and met them in person last year at the LA film fest. Simply incredible.
not trying to take away from this AT ALL, because it's a great record, and ahead of it's time, but it's not the fucking Ramones. it's just not. it's totally different. if anything it's a direct sidestep from the MC5, which makes complete sense, given the Detroit/Ann Arbor proximity.
Everyone knows Dewey Cox invented Punk. Sheesh.
It was about time!
Seriously, Kid Rock? You want us to take this seriously or what? :')
Finn Siebelink Hearing Kid Rock talk about punk is actually an embarrassment to the true punks.
Finn Siebelink he's just another dude who loves music
Yes , and it was Belgian band Blast 1972(1974) )))
Things like this are so stupid. Punk rock was a scene, not a sound. Lots of bands had a sound similar to what many “punk rock” bands sounded like later, but it’s kind of hard to be punk when punk didn’t exist. Lots of sounds and ideas came together to make that scene. But the premise of this video is that punk rock had a particular sound that this band (which was great) inadvertently pioneered. There was no punk rock sound. The idea was to play your own music. Once the sound became predictable (hardcore), punk rock died. Death was a great band, but it’s stupid to roll them in to a scene that never even knew they existed.
Seriously. A certain tribe is once again stoking the flames of racial division. Punk's roots go back to the 50s and 60s.
@@NachtSchreck13 Talk about missing the point.
don't get me wrong, death had a great rock record. but its so stupid how every year there is a "new" first punk band . there are loads of 60s bands that musically sound more punk then death and If we're going on attitude jerry lee lewis was a punk rocker 60 years ago
MC5 comes to mind.
So now everyone's gonna know about Death... good.
Haaave to watch this!
Aaaah, I see. Thanks for the clarification! Even then though, I doubt either bands would've known about each other, it's very close.
I finally saw the doc yesterday. What a both sad and great story! So many idiots couldn't get past the name Death and sign these guys. Imagine the difference in music history if these guys had gone big back then. There probably would have been a lot of Black punk bands inspired by their success. Thank goodness the masters were saved so we have this great music! DEATH DEATH DEATH!!!
The color was the problem not the name (Death). Be Real!
@@danjackson5797 The documentary specifically shows in interviews with the surviving members of the band that the name was a roadblock to getting record deals with several record companies, most notably Clive Davis of Arista who asked if the band could change the name as in his view it would be hard to market a band with that name. In just re-watched that scene to make sure I had it correct. That's Real because that's what the band members said about it.
@@littleghostfilms3012 That's just not how it works in America. The rules change when it comes to blacks and what whites think they can steal and repackage. They may have convinced those brothers or maybe the bros are to afraid to say what was really the cause. QA was it black or white record labels? There is a mountain of historical evidence that supports my supposition.
@@danjackson5797 I'm completely aware of how it works in America. I agree and know from a lifetime of experience that there are different rules in all kinds of ways for Blacks and Whites. You'd have to be a blind fool not to see the evidence that happens on a daily basis to prove that. If you haven't seen the doc. then you won't know. These guys are not hoodwinked or convinced by anyone to say anything but the truth. The older brother David who was the leader of the band came up with the name Death, and when he told his younger brothers they were all shocked and didn't like it at first, but since he was the oldest and they looked up to him that was the name they stuck with. Because they wouldn't change the name for marketability sake they fell into obscurity and broke up. This is just the truth as they experienced it. I'm not going to spend any more time trying to persuade you. I've seen the doc., I know from the band members own words what happened. If you choose to believe your own version that's fine, do so.
@@littleghostfilms3012 MegaDeath, Rob Zombie, Dead Kennedys. Fishbone didn't make it big but playing the same kind of music, Red Hot Chili Peppers did. RHCP got started by immulating Fishbone. Flea still says he can't understand why they didn't make it. Tina Bell was seminal to Grunge Seattle music. Kirt Cobain used to be her roadie, but you never hear about her. White America has stolen rock n roll, blues music, and country now they are after Soul R&B and Rap. There is a pattern Death is not a one-off. OK, now I done too. I won't try to convince you anymore. Peace!
didn't know frodo was a punk rocker!
The bird is the word.
i dont understand why there is fighting this music is good and i love it and now lets listen and be quiet if you dont like it go listen to something else
Now im curious....researched to be done
it IS GOOD! They deserve it!
Totally. Did people forget?
I can't believe everyone arguing about who created Punk first as if they are getting royalty checks! THAT'S NOT EVEN THE PUNK ROCK ATTITUDE! And Im sure most of these bands don't give a shit and just want to fucking ROCK! FTW! PUNKS NOT DEAD!
Nobody copied anything. But this is cool
Henry Rollins has such a fucking strong neck.
Can anybody tell me what VOD is? I'd like to check out this documentary
Video on demand. Through your cable provider, Apple TV, Amazon, etc.
The first punk band before all these bands were "Los Saicos", from Peru.
What about the mc5? The sonics?
henry rollins !
That's fair enough, the documentary does spin things a little bit.
god forbid they get the recognition they deserve.
THEY CALL HIM KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID
The Monks I say.
"Punk before punk existed" lol hipsters
Chuch schuldiner definitely changed a lot
I guess they're ignoring the Velvet Underground, the MC5, the Stooges, the Sonics, the Primitives, Monks, and the New York Dolls... You fucked up with this one, Vice.
Dickbox1080 nice seeing varg around
Los Saicos, The Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, The Kinks, The Sonics and other bands is not "punk before punk"? Sound and attitude of these bands is very "punk before punk" and these bands are born in late 60s-first 70s.
All of this is proto-punk, Death was formed in 1971 and no, is not a first punk band on the world, is a interesting proto-punk and garage rock band, with very hard rock/funk and prog influences...
Only reason they were not classified as 'punk rock' is that 'punk rock' had not been invented as a term yet.
Death started out as a punk band in 71 and were considered proto punk. I'm surprised no one talks about pure hell started in 74. Arguably, you could say they were. -shrugs-
If this is true then the Saicos were before Death
raw power came out in 1973 by the stooges
I wanna be your dog came out in July 69, but I have to hand it to Death for having even the slightest interest in rock music in the early 70s let alone being the real Bruddas and forming a wild sounding raw rock band. As I understand it they were a funk band until they witnessed a live performance by The Who.
Thnx noisey. :)
Actually you could say that about just about any band that was rebellious that's what rock is supposed to be when punk came out it was due to a man called legs McNeil who wrote A fanzine out of New Haven Connecticut I lived in that area around that time he went to cbgb's and did interviews the very first one was Lou Reed now we know Lou Reed is not Punk but the magazine was called punk magazine and it just stuck because it was a revolution of underground music bringing Rock back to where it should be in the first place because we were swamped by poser bands like Queen and Aerosmith the drippy drippy lullaby bullshit by posers packaged product just for sale we needed to bring it back to what it's supposed to be and so the coined the phrase punk from legs McNeil's Punk magazine I was there
Thomas Norton wow no response to this. Truth hurts but I AGREE! PURITY OF PUNK MUST COME BACK
You will say anything to avoid giving credit to the greatness of innovation in culture and science that came blackness.
I'm so glad my comment was grossly misunderstood.
You guys killed post punk rock?
Questlove The Ramones got no glory at all
I ACTUALLY MEANT IT WAS A GOOD THING. IM NOT AN ELITIST. THEY SHOULD GET THE RECOGNITION THEY DESERVE.
We created everything
Lol buying into a manufactured myth
Uh, Punk is multiracial
And you most likely weren't even there ? So not part of the Culture ?
Yeah. Your Subscriptions show you are a Generation who wasn't there and has a taste OPPOSITE to Punk
But you do you
lol
C'mon Death is much punk than The Sonics, MC5, Ny Dolls... In my opinion, is fuckin gooood
1976 ? Wtf are they talking about?
I bet you anything that 80% of the people who clicked on this did so because they already knew about death.
MISLEADING ELLIPSES. Sorry everyone.
Someone needs to do a movie on the band Death
This band is 'ok' but nothing to get hyped about.Punk music existed way before this band.
MC5 comes to mind.
right....tonsa of bands before...SWAMPRATS, just one of these...1966
Seriously. This is a total j00 ruse. They had one record and it was not punk. Someone pulled them up out of nowhere and brought them into the studio to record some new tunes which they are trying to pass off as old recordings so they can blackwash yet another musical genre/style that was NEVER "white" to begin with! Punk was a UNIVERSAL scene open to ANYONE, with contributions from everywhere. This is beyond asinine, this video. More divide and conquer poison for the minds of the weak.
MC5
Ramones two years earlier. Or the Stooges three years later :D
I'll agree with you it's an exaggeration, the whole "before the Ramones" thing doesn't even bother me, because that is historically true. If people are dumb enough to buy into the idea that Death were the first Punk band ever then they probably shouldn't be listening to the genre in the first place. But who knows? Maybe if they did release that album back in the day it would be considered a piece of historical significance in the development of the genre, or a cult classic at the least.
Not true at all. They were not mainstream at all.
The stooges????
The first Punk Band was Los Saicos. From Perú. 1964. Do your homework kids!
death is great, buttt. i just threw up in my mouth
IMO, The Who played with more reckless abandon than any of the for-mentioned "punk" bands anyway. Another thing, "punk" is a made up word to describe rock and roll that's played slightly faster. The terms "grunge" and "alternative" are even more ridiculous. It's only rock and roll.
@Anderson Cooper 😂 So sensitive.
There's definitely more similarities than differences.
@Anderson Cooper I think that you're putting way too much energy into labels
Ugh. Does Kid Rock have to be involved in this? 🙄
Los Saicos were first! Google them!
those are all garage rock with the loose exception of the Stooges. and the Velvet Underground isn't even punk.
I can't say I consider bands like Death, Mc5, Stooges, It's All Meat and lots of unsigned garage bands from the 60's to be punk.. but definitely not too far off.
just another money-making documentary.
Punk before punk existed? Surely they must be talking about 'Los Saicos' (originally named 'Los Psycos'), a peruvian band that recorded at least 12 proto-punk tracks between 1965 and 1966. [[Like this and let the truth be known!]]
death >> ramones
Xers do your reaserch, you are wrong. Alot.
These guys are great, and they could only have come from Detroit! But let's please stop with the blackwashing of punk. It makes people look desperate and pathetic, attempting to proclaim Black "ownership" of every genre of music under the sun. Punk is not "Black" music, it's not "White" music. It is Universal. Artists of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds have contributed to its legacy. If you want to split hairs, you could call The Who's "My Generation" the first Punk record, and it came out in 1965. The Who are clear progenitors of punk. They were the first band to intentionally use feedback on a recording ("Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" from 1965) and they often smashed their instruments at the end of their sets - incorporating the noise of dying guitars and punctured speaker stacks into the music. Yet they were heavily influenced by Motown and Black Soul records from the USA. Early Who sets always contained sped up Motown and Blues covers, frenetically belted out at high tempos under the heavy influence of amphetamines. And around and around it goes. Can't we all just enjoy the effing music without turning everything into an argument about race and cultural appropriation?
Yeah, Punk is multiracial
black punk before punk existed*
so many goddamn racists here
A Black Woman named Tina Bell, invented, Grunge Rock. Kurt Cobain was actually her roadie. 💯💯💯
She didn't invent Grunge, the roots of Grunge are Way Older
lol
She was part of plenty of bands of Our Alternative Cultures
Punk is multiracial
btw
They did the same thing to FishBone in L.A. ask Flea the bass player for RHCPs. and any other honest white band from that error. The reason Death and Fishbone are not household names is because America has, is and always will be a white ethno-state that hold or erases blackness when ever possible. This is a sad story again.
Punk has always been multiracial
Nothing was erased
Another hollywood liberal bullshit twist, trying to credit a black band as the first punk band. First of all-- the Ramones smokes Death... this is NOT the Ramones, 2 years earlier... Second, this conveniently ignores that this is "protopunk" of 1971, of which there were protopunk bands dating back to 1964--- such as the stooges, mc5, the seeds, the monks, the sonics, the velvet underground, the standells, the kinks, and a handful of other protopunk songs that preceded this sub-par music here.
You seem really butt hurt over this.
Mike Hernandez not really--- bend over now, and i'll show you what but hurt means chola
This isn't punk.
