The Sad Truth About The Beach Boys

- When the Beach Boys first came onto the music scene in the early ‘60s, their music encapsulated summer fun and surf culture. However, their music quickly took a turn for the mellow and introspective, pointing to the inner darkness that many members of the band were feeling. Brothers Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson had grown up with an abusive father who acted as their manager in the early days, while Brian had mental health struggles that put him out of commission for long periods of time. From the lawsuits between band members to the infamous Charles Manson connection, let’s take a look at the sad truth about the Beach Boys.

What fascinates me the most is how besides all that darkness and evil, The Beach Boys were able to produce the brightest and most beautiful music ever made by a rock artist. Somehow, ironic to say the least
@@johnlinnon2629 Susan Cowsill said he 'tried'. Where do you get your information?
I was waiting for this comment thank you
I'd have said the worst thing is the incorrect chronology and misinformation.
Too profound in my current state of mind….
Yeah it's called LSD
The Beach Boys are my favorite band. Their 70's music was pure beauty.
Songs like Good Timing, Student Demonstration time and Break Away are GREAT!
You must mean their 60s music, right? 70's for real? Even their greatest output of the 70s was written in the 60s.
Marcella!!👍.... Good timing👍...Johnny Carson👍🎵Its OK👍🎸DingDang👍🎵🎶
@@nikokaapa I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and guess that you never listened through their 70s output
@@shirtymop6463 Good guess! I have not listened to all the albums. I really enjoyed "Surf's Up" obviously, but I really wouldn't count that as true 70s output, because most of the good stuff was written in the 60s. Same goes for "Sunflower". "Holland" and "Love You" are obviously highlights of that decade (and I have a mega soft spot for "Had to Phone Ya" off "15 Big Ones") but it's nothing that touches their 60s output. MIU and LA I have never listened to at all apart from some songs. They sucked.
If you haven't listened to the SMiLE sessions yet, I beg you to find a way to listen to that record. Brian was years ahead of his time.
The unreleased beach boys record?
It was released a few years ago.
@@stevebradley704 ohh yeah, i thought it wasn't released because they began work on it in 1967 mb
Out of all the bootlegs I made 1 years ago based on the original track listing. 3/4 of Smile had been heard by '71 combining smiley smile-20/20&surfs up; then in 93 w/ do you like worms; the remaining 2 songs were the classic old master painter (only sunshine) & I'm in great shape which was the only 1 unfinished from what I heard.
I like this narrator's voice as it doesn't sound affected and doesn't grate. Also, the background music is not intrusive.
nah, it's just repetitive and annoying (background music).
Fantastic point! Completely agree ~
You MUST be trolling?!
Uber witty response!
Endured the voice and music for as long as possible, which was 2:00. No way making it 8 more minutes.
My favourite band by far , so immensely under appreciated for their later work
It's strange how happy their songs make me, but how gut wrenching and brooding all these facts are.
Right? I couldn't have imagined they're stories were this fucked up
Dennis DID NOT destroy Christine's home!? I remember an incident with the small guest house. Saying he "destroyed" Chris' home is embellishment. Even as his life spiraled out of control Dennis was fairly neat. Boat was pristine. Spent many days at Christine's and he was respectful of her belongings. She did buy him a car he could drive around and crash into things yet the home was never destroyed.
this is a lot of gossip
That’s awesome, appreciate you setting things straight for him.
right he just did a little landscaping in the front
That's super interesting to hear. Did you know him personally?
spacepatrolman What do you mean?
When you have a mother or father who belittle you all your life, this voices don't go away. It's been said emotional and mental abuse is worse than physical, and I agree. I truly believe that they were all fighting demons, and Dennis somehow couldn't face them. They did have good music for that era, and boasted California was the place to be. I watched the movie last night, and it was very good. They didn't want to have anything to do with their dad and fired him from being their manager. He was very controlling. Dennis was a player and left behind 6 children. Brian cleaned up according to the film, but Dennis couldn't find peace. It's truly sad how such creative good looking men could self destruct. It's almost like the letter their father sent them, was a curse.
Dennis Wilson’s “Pacific Ocean blue” is a masterpiece.
I LOVE it.
The Beach Boys are the greatest American rock and roll band ever. Its sad when you learn the history of the members, how they were traumatized as children and how that affected their adulthood, well with the Wilson brothers anyway.
Mike Love has killed the band in recent years, its not the Beach Boys anymore, its the Mike Love band
William McCollom Mike’s contributions to the band were minimal at best. No talent compared to Brian.
Love was poison to the dynamics of the band. He was ego driven from day one.
William McCollom no it the Beatles
Brian, Al Jardine, and Blondie are still touring and traveling. I saw them a few months back and they were like the old time beach boys band.
Yeah, I did think it sounded unfair that Brian May or may not have taken credit for songs he didn’t write yet who knows what’s true besides them and God. I honestly can’t say I blame any of them for the things they did wrong as it seems they were always held back and well their childhood was how they learned to live life so sour and sadly, I feel bad for them and honestly this will always change my perspective on their music, while the music is great I now won’t be able to forget the tragedy that went on behind those closed doors
When one adds up all the dama, tragedy, highs and lows, and the bizaare (i.e. Dennis's brief relationship with Charles Manson) and you've got a story that rivals any fictional account.
donkeydump63 that’s why they’re a better band than the Beatles

What book you are reading. He does not.
Lennon have a horrible life and personality. Read lennon's half sister book.
Not one word about the genius of Al Jardine
Do tell
True, but the video is about sad events in Beach Boys history so in a way Al’s lucky he wasn’t mentioned in it.
I can't tell if you're joking or not. Al was always one of my favorites but making an important contribution and being a nice guy isn't really genius. Unless we want to throw the word around loosely, there was only one genius in that band.
The59thHooh I just think Al should be given a bit more credit for being part of the band and his contribution . Yea and your right the Wilsons were a pretty fuked up bunch because of there dad
D ooonot kidding he's a genius in my eyes .in fact he's a fuking Einestine compared to Mike Love
dude, this is sad
Just listen to "catch a wave", and you forget all about this BS
why catch a wave? why not something nice and relaxing llike Cool Cool Water?
@@jerrysmith2354 Love that song. It sort of encapsulizes why I ended up there as a young man.
I love The Beach boy's it's so sad what they went threw!May thier music live forever
So sad and heartbreaking.. that they experienced so much violence and no love from their parents. The Beach boys gave so much beautiful happy music to the world.
To my understanding, they had a good mother. It was the father
They experienced love from their mother and while their father was often cruel abusive and controlling, he was also caring, supportive in his way, and by no means detached from his son's or their success. Actually that made it all the harder then if he had simply been a cruel but cold and uncaring distant figure. Having a deeply disturbed and abusive parent or other relitave who is ALSO very emotional, and shows signs of genuinely caring and deep love is incredibly hard. I know all about this personally! Yes, this seeming contradiction is posible without any of it being pretend or faked. It may be hard to understand or not believed by most who only see sociopathy, but I am familiar with such self countrodictory figures from my own extended family! 😢😡❤
God I hate when I hear stories about guys being abused by their father when they were kids and we always stress the fact that kids need a man at home.Sometimes having a man at home is just as bad as not having a man at home at all.
Brian's life was incredibly sad. He had a wife that he married when they were about 16, but when he got into the drugs and voices and such, he stopped caring for his wife and family. Then he got a doctor. But this "doctor" was evil, and made him stay away from everyone he loved, and made him do prescription drugs. Way more than he needed. He would yell and hit him when he was trying to write songs, and he even wrote himself into Brian's will without his permission. Eventually Brian fell in love with a girl who helped to get rid of the doctor, and got his license taken away. Brian then got proper care and started recovering properly. Very sad. But he's doing better now, even though he went through all of that.
Beach Boys produce some of the best harmonies ever.❤️
Brian, We loved your harmonies. You are a genius. Thank you, to
All the gifts of music, from all of you. Days Youth; listening and
Singing, to the beach
Boys. God Bless, each of you.
Wow!! And I guess being around Charles Mansion would drive anyone nuts! Now that relationship, rabbit hole goes deep!!😵 Poor Dennis Wilson. 😟
Not a non stop 🏄 safari for The Beach Boys. Good Vibrations is the greatest song ever ! There is an eerie atmosphere about it. Ultimately , The Band perservered over Manson , drugs & death.
It's a great production, but not a great song.
I had read about all of these harsh times quite a while back. Remember the involvement of Dennis and Manson when it was going on. So sad
That’s not Brian in the Kokomo video. That was Carl.
And Kokomo is an excellent song with incredible lead vocals by Carl, don't like to see it dissed.
So sad. I knew things were bad but I never knew how bad the situation was.
The Wilson father was a real prize. Like the jackson father, the Whitney Houston father, the Amy Winehouse father..... In the end, t's really just about the money, isn't it?
And the Cowsill's father- dickhead
I would ask actor Macaulay Culkin what he thinks about that but he’s on a pretty bad heroin bender at the moment.
And Beethoven's father .
I like the beach boys. There music is so creative
Manson taught Denis Wilson to play guitar, in spite of footage of him playing guitar with his brothers? Please.
I cought that too, it's total bullshit, Manson tought him nothing. Manson swore one time the beach boys stole one of his songs, and that's also BS. I know they did hang out some, but once they knew how manson was, they had nothing to do with the idiot.Manson was a freak cause of his past, Beach boys got over theirs and went forward.
@@garyr7027 Unfortunately the Manson episode was a a sign of the times then- crazy, inspiring, not a lot of intelligence...
*cough* Never Learn Not To Love *cough*
I've read both of the Brian Wilson biographies as well as Mike Love's book. I've also watched a bunch of their interviews. Nowhere did I read or hear that Murray Wilson hit Brian with a "lead pipe" causing Brian's hearing loss in one ear. I did read, however, the Murray hit or slammed Brian very hard with a punch or open hand to his ear. If Brian was hit with a lead pipe as described it probably would have killed him. I'd check my BB facts on that one.
First I've heard this "lead pipe" story. I believe that is what it really is...just a story made up by someone seeking their 15 minutes of fame. The lead pipe story is fabricated!!
I just found the passage in Brian's book:
"When I was out playing in my neighborhood, between my house and another, a kid hit me in the head with a lead pipe. His name was Seymour, I think, either his first or his last. The feeling was just shock at first, but the next day I realized that I couldn’t hear as well out of my right ear. I told my mom and she took me to the doctor, who examined me and said that the eighth nerve in my head was severed. I say that my right ear’s completely deaf, though doctors are more specific. Some say 98 percent and some say 95 percent."
They don't make pipes out of lead anyway, not in hundreds of years. Pipes are made of steel, copper, or PVC but never lead. It's just stupid.
He was hit by a lead pipe later on, not that young, and it wasnt by his father but some neighborhood goon.
@@kevincurry6159 I've never seen any, but even if it was true, it would never hurt. Lead is soft and if the pipe was truly made of lead, it would be thin walled like copper pipe, if they hit you in the head with it, the pipe would bend and not hurt you at all
Dad was a fiend, but dad's prophetic words ended up becoming a curse that came to fruition sounds like to me.
Mike Love appears to be the most stable of the original members, and the trials and tribulations of the Wilson brothers can be attributed to one thing - a shitty father.
I'd say Murray and Carl's relationship with Charles Mansion that combined to make that happen
I think Al Jardine is. Mike Love has had his moments (the "apple juice" incident) and five marriages is not not to be sniffed at.
You learn something new everyday. Thanks for this video 🙃
some of the stuff the mention is wrong. The stuff about dennis's wife is over exagerated. Also, they only mention their popular surfing songs, rather than their great songs that are just fantastic pieces of art.
I LOVE THE BACKGROUND MUSIC AND NARRATION OF THIS QUICK BEACH BOYS SUMMARY!! RIP DENNIS & CARL WILSON !!🙏🙏
Atleast they can prove their father wrong. They made something of themselves. I’m proud of them and for them.
I am reading the comments while looking at Brian Wilson and Al Jardine's autographs in a frame on my wall. "God only knows" now that is some song.
I remember one of my late brothers was crazy about the Beach Boys and their music. He played the LPs out. My friends and I thought some of their songs were cool. Good Vibrations, In My Room, etc. 🎼 🏄
In my Room was a beautiful song. Definitely my favourite of theirs.
@@C0maT0ast Thank you for reading my comment. The song, "In My Room" seemed to be personal to my late brother. When he went to the military, I began listening to the song and understood why it was special to him. My Beloved Dad heard me getting emotional, and told me to stay over my best friend's house.
While the vein of tragedy threads itself through the entire Beach Boys story, I proffer that it is this very angst from which the peace, fun, and light of their greatest work emerged. Its easy to write and sing about tragedy; that's called entertainment. But it's a whole different experience to live that tragedy and then turn it into music. That's called art.
man i love the beach boys and carl wilson
I love the Beach Boys, but I think Carl had the most beautiful voice of anyone in the group. Brian was smart to assign him lead vocals on GOD ONLY KNOWS.
I love the Beach Boys and enjoyed watching this. Kokomo was a real place, I was lucky enough to go there in the early 2000s before the name got changed. Its now called Sandals Cay. Amazing small island and very inspiring!
They still got it. Got the opportunity to watch them live a few years ago
Dennis and Shawn Love weren't second cousins, they were first cousins once removed. Yes, there is a difference. They are more closely related than second cousins are.
Will someone please explain what that difference is?
If your first cousin has a kid, you and the kid are first cousins once removed. If *you* then have a kid, then your kid and your first cousin's kid are second cousins to each other.
Regardless it's still kinda sick in my opinion.
@@stevequinn9617 it’s even more sick. second cousins would be way more acceptable.
Thanks guys for your wonderful music.thanks Brian for discovering our Flames band members:Blondie and Rick
My First Love in Rock n Roll ..
Love them To This Day .
In the 60s I new a sure fire way to feel good was to listen to some Beach Boys songs. I saw the movie about Brian but I found he had more problems than I imagined. Which came first, the heavy drug and alcohol use or the schizophrenia? Anyway, good vid here and it shed some light on the strange relationship with Charles Manson. Well, time to go back "in my room".
Are you gonna make video about Miraculous Ladybug & Chat Noir? I heard it's one of the most popular tv show in France. Some people said that it's kinda Nightwing & Spider-gwen version of Paris
I was under the impression Kokomo was the one of the tiki bars at the Holiday Isle resort in Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
It seemed pretty
definitive in the song.
I thought it was about the town in Indiana.
Ken Jacobsen Kokomo video was shot at the grand Floridian hotel in Disney world Florida, but the actual place “Kokomo” seems to be an idea of a place, at least that’s why understanding. That song is my guilty pleasure
It's so sad to hear about child abuse........I'm so sorry....
Damn, Murray Wilson makes Joe Jackson look like Mike Brady in comparison :(
And of course, that stuff also contributed to the infamous eating disorder his daughter Carnie suffered.
So sad, such an AMAZING BAND, AMERICAN MADE! WONDERFUL young men, Thank God they showed up and just at the right time, bless them all
Hal Blaine was the studio drummer. I worked for him for 15 years.
That PHRASE "There's A Fine Line Between Genius & Madman" .. It FIT Brian to a tee...
When you look at The Beach Boys history and The Beatles, it seems that sometimes it's better break up when it comes for the right time and stay just as friends. If The Beach Boys would've disbanded after Holland album, they would've been considered much more serious and respected band nowadays and relationship between them could've been much better. Being in a band, playing rock and roll and all that stuff, it's fun when you're young. But after you became older, your personality grows up and your demands too. The Beach Boys problem was that they were all too much talented and independent as artists to continue together after about 1974-75. But they all found compromise, probably because they were relatives and old friends. But it costed them a lot. The best thing Beatles did was breaking up. And now they're legends. There's very few occasions when band can continue together after all of the years and stay more/less friends, like The Rolling Stones.
Couldn't help but notice that Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston were not mentioned at all. I guess the problems were all in the family and relatives.
I once heard Al being described as "boring" just because he did not enter into the groups shenanigans, THis video is not done by a fan, it only talks about the bad things, not the good things. FWIW I don't think that there would have been The Beach Boys without Murry (sold his business to invest in the group, knocked on every recording studio door to get them a recording deal-what a bastard!)< MIke for his business sense and Melinda his wife for encouraging the Pet Sounds tours, the Smile tours and the actual release of Smile. Three people who so-called "fans" love to slag off. Without them, The Beach Boys would be an obscure garage band whom nobody had ever heard of, and Brian's music probably never written or heard of. Fun fact: What do The Beatles and The Beach Boys have in common? They were both turned down by Decca Records!!!
@@Paul020253 I guess everyone has issues with their parents. I certainly did. Good points though.
@@Paul020253 , the late Murry Wilson had ambition and tenacity. I'll give him that, but hitting your son with a lead pipe and causing him to become hearing impaired? I wouldn't of wanted him for my Dad. Murray paid the price in the end. Once Brian learned to produce, Murry was OUT! BTW, I liked your fun fact about Decca. Here's another Fun Fact: Murry Wilson sold the Beach Boys publishing company "Sea of Tunes" for 700K in 1969 without the consent of Brian Wilson or Mike Love. Today the Sea of Tunes catalog is estimated to be worth around 68 M. Was Murry a worse Dad or business man?
@@Paul020253 , At least Al could handle Murry. That's something David Marks couldn't do.
@@jasona9 FWIW I think Murry sold Sea of Tunes out of spite. There are several versions of what caused BRian's deafness-I've been a fan since 1967 and have heard the story several times in many incarnations. The lead pipe is the latest, interestingly Brian in one account denied his father had caused it. For me, I now prefer to listen to the Beach Boys in mono, because that is how Brian would have produced it. A so called fan once told me he preferred to listen in stereo because it was better. Not sure if a real fan would want to "improve" on Brian's work. Btw whatever you may think of Murry, in his memoir Brian paid tribute to his dad, saying that without Murry, there would have been no Beach Boys.
The darkest backgrounds always seem to produce the most inspiring content. The beachboys suffering so much from within, produced some of the happiest brightest greatest songs. Robin Williams, a man full of emotion, humor, and wit on the outside, was plagued with a deep depression. This may be weird to say, but without the continuous mental health struggles and the abusive stepdad, I don't think that the beach boys would have reached the same success. Not a fact but a theory.
Not their step dad, their biological father Murry Wilson. Also, Mary while a very disturbed and abusive struggling blue collar man, was also quite artisticly talented himself but never found much success (most such people never do) except through his son's, which he began to exploit and become jealous of. Yet by all reports he also cared deeply about his son's success and was a very sentpsitive and emotional man with an oftdn hair trigger temper, -he was in other words a simultaneously horribly abusive and disturbed and also loving and deeply caring person. This is not a contradiction, but it's controversial to say this as it sounds to many like sympathy for abusers. It's not, but it is empathy for a very real and extremely difficult type of situation with only dificult answers and decisions to make. I know it all too well and this can lead to different and seemingly ( to the mainstream) irrational priorities at times.
great info, THX
That was a heart-breaker. 😨
If Mike Love is their first cousin that makes her a first cousin once removed An offspring of Dennis would be her second cousin
And that's really strange, no wonder they have two relatives who'd played in the NBA & not having a singing career or creating a rock band. You search that on google on what I'm talking about.

Who exactly is “them”?
LampwicksCigar the only one that’s really original is mike love. Bruce Johnston is kind of part of their history so he’s in the group but if you want to see the real beach boys see Brian Wilson and Al Jardine together if they still play concerts
@@emmahartvig9966 Come on Emma, Bruce has been a part of the band since 1965, I think that qualifies him as a Beach Boy. That said, you are right on about seeing Brian, I do so every time he goes on tour, and thankfully Al is there as well. The best thing about Mike's group is Jeff Foskett, who goes back and forth touring with Brian and Mike.
For those who don't know the difference, Mike Love went to court to claim sole use of the name "The Beach Boys", so anytime you see a concert advertised as The Beach Boys it will always be the Mike Love / Bruce Johnston version. I understand that the Beatles are forever going to be more well known and appreciated than the Beach Boys, but being a California kid that grew up alot of times alone "In My Room" (get the reference?); I always felt closer to the Beach Boys and their Sweet/Happy music....I connected with them more than a bunch of Mop Tops from Liverpool...
Dude how about a happy story about them? Jezz Brian turned into a good husband and father and Mike has managed to be a good activist. It's sad about Dennis and Carl. I guess there's no happy ending there
You could make a movie out of all this craziness! hey band biomovies are back in!
Same sad old story that’s been told over again and again. Some interesting clips of Brian. They even pulled Charlie( Manson )out of the bag just for good measure.
When he was talking about Kokomo he says "It's probably playing in head right now" No, it isn't. Never even heard of the song.
His Breakdown over the Fire music was NOT because it caused forest fires. The building next to the studio burnt down the same night they recorded it and their were more fires in LA than usual which made Brian think he had tapped into some form of black magic. That for many people is were he started to lose control and was the beginning of the end of the "Smile"album
Yes ...Rock and Roll produces only good things...and great people!
Carl Wilson was the best of the Beach Boys.
Would appreciate more context about the lesser known Beach Boys projects, for example - Dennis Wilsons "Pacific Ocean Blue". There are aspects to that album that relate to the theme that comes to mind after seeing this video - that frequently great artistic work is significantly the product of adversity.
Good to know! Awesome Brian, you rock!

I'm guessing that Al Jardin was the lightest part of the beach boys.
The most drama Al ever dealt with was the breakdown between Brian and Murray during the "Help Me Rhonda" session, being divorced from his first wife Lynda, and being sued by Mike Love over the use of the solo band name Beach Boys' Family and Friends.

Amazing what life of rocker can do to people
It's not the life of a rocker but their evil fathers serious mental and physical abuse. It kills a person.
