  • When the Beach Boys first came onto the music scene in the early ‘60s, their music encapsulated summer fun and surf culture. However, their music quickly took a turn for the mellow and introspective, pointing to the inner darkness that many members of the band were feeling. Brothers Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson had grown up with an abusive father who acted as their manager in the early days, while Brian had mental health struggles that put him out of commission for long periods of time. From the lawsuits between band members to the infamous Charles Manson connection, let’s take a look at the sad truth about the Beach Boys.

    What fascinates me the most is how besides all that darkness and evil, The Beach Boys were able to produce the brightest and most beautiful music ever made by a rock artist. Somehow, ironic to say the least

      @@shirtymop6463 Good guess! I have not listened to all the albums. I really enjoyed "Surf's Up" obviously, but I really wouldn't count that as true 70s output, because most of the good stuff was written in the 60s. Same goes for "Sunflower". "Holland" and "Love You" are obviously highlights of that decade (and I have a mega soft spot for "Had to Phone Ya" off "15 Big Ones") but it's nothing that touches their 60s output. MIU and LA I have never listened to at all apart from some songs. They sucked.

    Dennis DID NOT destroy Christine's home!? I remember an incident with the small guest house. Saying he "destroyed" Chris' home is embellishment. Even as his life spiraled out of control Dennis was fairly neat. Boat was pristine. Spent many days at Christine's and he was respectful of her belongings. She did buy him a car he could drive around and crash into things yet the home was never destroyed.

    When you have a mother or father who belittle you all your life, this voices don't go away. It's been said emotional and mental abuse is worse than physical, and I agree. I truly believe that they were all fighting demons, and Dennis somehow couldn't face them. They did have good music for that era, and boasted California was the place to be. I watched the movie last night, and it was very good. They didn't want to have anything to do with their dad and fired him from being their manager. He was very controlling. Dennis was a player and left behind 6 children. Brian cleaned up according to the film, but Dennis couldn't find peace. It's truly sad how such creative good looking men could self destruct. It's almost like the letter their father sent them, was a curse.

      They experienced love from their mother and while their father was often cruel abusive and controlling, he was also caring, supportive in his way, and by no means detached from his son's or their success. Brian's life was incredibly sad. He had a wife that he married when they were about 16, but when he got into the drugs and voices and such, he stopped caring for his wife and family. Then he got a doctor. But this "doctor" was evil, and made him stay away from everyone he loved, and made him do prescription drugs. Way more than he needed. He would yell and hit him when he was trying to write songs, and he even wrote himself into Brian's will without his permission. Eventually Brian fell in love with a girl who helped to get rid of the doctor, and got his license taken away. Brian then got proper care and started recovering properly. Very sad. But he's doing better now, even though he went through all of that.

Nowhere did I read or hear that Murray Wilson hit Brian with a "lead pipe" causing Brian's hearing loss in one ear. While the vein of tragedy threads itself through the entire Beach Boys story, I proffer that it is this very angst from which the peace, fun, and light of their greatest work emerged. Its easy to write and sing about tragedy; that's called entertainment. But it's a whole different experience to live that tragedy and then turn it into music. That's called art.

    When you look at The Beach Boys history and The Beatles, it seems that sometimes it's better break up when it comes for the right time and stay just as friends. If The Beach Boys would've disbanded after Holland album, they would've been considered much more serious and respected band nowadays and relationship between them could've been much better. Being in a band, playing rock and roll and all that stuff, it's fun when you're young. But after you became older, your personality grows up and your demands too. The Beach Boys problem was that they were all too much talented and independent as artists to continue together after about 1974-75. But they all found compromise, probably because they were relatives and old friends. But it costed them a lot. The best thing Beatles did was breaking up. And now they're legends. There's very few occasions when band can continue together after all of the years and stay more/less friends, like The Rolling Stones.

FWIW I don't think that there would have been The Beach Boys without Murry (sold his business to invest in the group, knocked on every recording studio door to get them a recording deal-what a bastard!)< MIke for his business sense and Melinda his wife for encouraging the Pet Sounds tours, the Smile tours and the actual release of Smile. Three people who so-called "fans" love to slag off. Without them, The Beach Boys would be an obscure garage band whom nobody had ever heard of, and Brian's music probably never written or heard of. Fun fact: What do The Beatles and The Beach Boys have in common? They were both turned down by Decca Records!!!

Here's another Fun Fact: Murry Wilson sold the Beach Boys publishing company "Sea of Tunes" for 700K in 1969 without the consent of Brian Wilson or Mike Love. Today the Sea of Tunes catalog is estimated to be worth around 68 M. Was Murry a worse Dad or business man?

      @@jasona9 FWIW I think Murry sold Sea of Tunes out of spite. There are several versions of what caused BRian's deafness-I've been a fan since 1967 and have heard the story several times in many incarnations. The lead pipe is the latest, interestingly Brian in one account denied his father had caused it. For me, I now prefer to listen to the Beach Boys in mono, because that is how Brian would have produced it. A so called fan once told me he preferred to listen in stereo because it was better. Not sure if a real fan would want to "improve" on Brian's work. Btw whatever you may think of Murry, in his memoir Brian paid tribute to his dad, saying that without Murry, there would have been no Beach Boys.

    The darkest backgrounds always seem to produce the most inspiring content. The beachboys suffering so much from within, produced some of the happiest brightest greatest songs. Robin Williams, a man full of emotion, humor, and wit on the outside, was plagued with a deep depression. This may be weird to say, but without the continuous mental health struggles and the abusive stepdad, I don't think that the beach boys would have reached the same success. Not a fact but a theory.

    • @jKLa
      @jKLa 6 месяцев назад

      Not their step dad, their biological father Murry Wilson. Also, Mary while a very disturbed and abusive struggling blue collar man, was also quite artisticly talented himself but never found much success (most such people never do) except through his son's, which he began to exploit and become jealous of. Yet by all reports he also cared deeply about his son's success and was a very sentpsitive and emotional man with an oftdn hair trigger temper, -he was in other words a simultaneously horribly abusive and disturbed and also loving and deeply caring person. This is not a contradiction, but it's controversial to say this as it sounds to many like sympathy for abusers. It's not, but it is empathy for a very real and extremely difficult type of situation with only dificult answers and decisions to make. I know it all too well and this can lead to different and seemingly ( to the mainstream) irrational priorities at times.
