My brother and I met the Beach Boys back in the eighties. We picked Dennis up off the floor to which he was very thankful. He was very friendly had the voice of an eighty year old and was very dissipated, Mike Love was a real ignoramus and was trying to pick up girls half his age. Brian was one of the nicest people I ever met in my life. His last words to my brother and I was "God bless you guys".

That was such an ingenious quick witted answer by Brian. If you watch a lot of interviews over many years of Brian, you begin to realize how much of a genius Brian was outside of just his songwriting. And so honest without worrying about what he will say next. Those are true signs of a well rounded individual.
I enjoyed this interview. They seem to be a very nice group of men who happen to be musical icons. Bruce and Al seem really sweet. Don't know much about David. Mike is Mike, and probably has not changed one iota, personality wise, since the 60's. And Brian...Precious Brian. What's not to love. I'm such a huge fan of Brian Wilson that I would gladly pay to see him nod off on stage. LOL
Easily one of the greatest american groups of all time. When I was growing up my grandparents would just play the beach boys 24/7 thank God I was able to appreciate their music. So much talent and just overall better quality than what we have now a days.
It was always good how most of the band were supportive/protective of Brian, obviously Carl and Dennis more back in the day but nowadays Al and to a lesser extent David Marks are holdovers of that mentality and they know to respect him.
True.. Brian deserves respect, it’s his group! Alan Jardine is a good friend to him.. his cousin Mike not so. I could already feel the tension and it’s only at the 2:34 Mark! My dear! It’s like these can’t get along under the surface.
I like the way that when Mike says that being back together is 'really good', Brian Wilson waves his hand in front of his nose as if to say 'Bullshit'.
The Beach Boys will never be all back together as long as Dennis and Carl are in Heaven and not on earth. But fans like to see the surviving Beach Boys together.
The greatest songs in the Beach Boys catalog are the ones where Brian collaborated with Gary Usher, Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks. I always found the nasal quality in Mike's voice to be grating on the ears. To think that he e-mailed Brian, Al and David that he no longer required their services for the rest of the tour was an unholy act imo. Of all the Beach Boys and the different lineups they had I always considered Mike to be the least talented. Without Brian he would be a nothing.
Love did that because his touring band of “The Beach Boys” already had a tour sold and scheduled. Business is business. Maybe it wasn’t the best planning but the others haven’t been touring with him for years so it was to be expected as there was no further contract in place.

Thanks Google for doing this. A lot of bases covered, I found it fun and worthwhile. Al came off well; Bruce and David were generous with praise; Mike was informative but a little too wordy, and Brian was Brian.
I got to personally meet Mike Love and Bruce Johnson on The Beach Boys 50th year tour ( back stage) a couple of years ago. Great concert that night!! I’ve always wanted to meet Brian, though.

Tim Lazar being the oldest he really took the full abuse from Murray(dad). Murray was a very strong business mind. However from watching the biography I think Brian and Murray were much alike. Through all that abuse and learning how not to be I think the result is a Brian Wilson that is very damaged. But obviously a genius. To be able to write the early music to honour the contract and do the producing and literally everything else. He gave dad the boot and had to take over.
Also, egomaniacal Mike Love hogs the mic. Acts like Brian is just a bobble head there. Whew! Man has such an ego and doesn't even realize how obvious it is to most of us out here watching.
I saw you August 6th in San Diego at The Rady Shell. The Beach Boys were incredible! Thank you Boys for such a memorable night. In My Room is one of my favorites. You brought tears more then once.
TIM QUIRK!!! Can I please take your job?!?! You had the Beach Boys and one of the finest musicians ever, Brian Wilson on your show and you did an awful job. DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE'S BEEN THROUGH!?!??! and you tell HIM to speak into the mic?!? HE's Brian WILSON!!!! Hey business is business.
Well Rodrigo, what he had to tell to Brian? He didn't insult him, he only told him to speak close to the mic.... Brian words were not understandable because he kept the mic on his legs.
Yes Al I agree.... 'Please let me wonder' a great song & harmonies & 'Kiss me baby' also they are2 of my favourites from the Beach Boys...wonderful stuff
The most uncomfortable interview I've heard in a long time. Brian's looking at his watch, and only one that's really humorous. Good interview. Great music irreplaceable. Thanks for sharing.
So many people think it has to be Mike love or Brian Wilson. The fact is they were both original members, they both contributed writing, and the rest is history. To say there wouldn’t be one without the other is just a butterfly theory that is a waste of time to discuss because it is what it is. I have seen both bands Mike, Bruce, and the Beach boys and I’ve seen Brian Wilson with Al Jardine recently. Two great bands worth the money to go see.
Sorry, MIke wrote the chorus to Good Vibrations and i also prefer his set of lyrics at the song, but his pop surf rock lyrics are some of the best of the genre, but by 65 they were oldfashioned already and he never wanted to go with the times, hence brians other lyricists involvement. and musically he didn't do much, the music was all brian.
I'd say he was being slightly sarcastic. Brian's always had a wry sense of humor. All the Beach Boys seemed to get a great big laugh out of Brian's line - Bruce's laugh is particularly evident. :-)
At the 8:45 mark, Brian shines bright as the Beach Boy's beacon beaming Gold North Star, by becoming poetic about being on stage for their group speak; and magically writing a Lyric, on a whim. Wow.
Good ole Al Jardine, I've never seen a video of him where he doesn't in some way complain about the equipment. Either the microphone isn't on, the guitar isn't tuned, its the wrong type of guitar, his seats too high...…… great singer though. Shame the world is so against him really.
They never pay tribute to The Wrecking Crew. Without them, there is no I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda, Sloop John B, California Girls, Good Vibrations and No Pet Sounds or Smile!
Mike Love is desperate by recognition, he can't help but mentioning Kokomo like if equally iconic. You can feel how he's so hit driven, "don't fuck the formula" makes all sense.
I think it's got a lot to do with his situation before he joined the band. For him it was join the band or.....join the band, it had to be successful financially for him. That financial insecurity still drives him.
Mike Love, was a pain in the neck and still is a pain the neck wanting to take the credit for the job done by the other members of the band, Brian Wilson in particular !
I love Brian and he deserves all the praise in the world for his magnificent work in the pop sphere, but it almost seems like people kinda kiss up to him no matter what he says or does now. I know i personally would be annoyed if i were Brian sometimes.
StormlitAqua the tension between them, especially with Al Mike and Brian was unmistakable. If true words could be said they would have. But they couldn’t.
I love the story about Little Deuce Coup...getting it on the radio right after it was recorded, and the DJ "happened" to be the co-author of the song...
21:50 the announcer states The Beach Boys are or were the biggest American band at the time, the 4 Seasons had much more chart success at that time and even after.
The only guy there without a hugely overblown ego is the guy who really rates one, but could care less. He's also the only one who is truly a musician. Brian Wilson will go down as one of the greatest musical artists this country has ever produced. Next to Brian, the rest are just hacks.
@@funnycomedian2718 Considering David was only actually a member of the group for about a year and a half prior to this reunion, I can kind of understand him trying to capitalize on this moment (honestly, they might as well have asked Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar back as well). I think most avid fans would rank Al as the next best guy in the group after the 3 Wilson brothers (both artistically and personality-wise). But, yeah, Mike has done himself zero favors over the years -- particularly in trying to save face over his initial critical opinions of _Pet Sounds_ and _Smile_ .
I would think Brian Wilson might possibly be Autistic. Of course back then they knew nothing of it. I realize drugs have taken their toll but when you look at the stage fright and the dislike of people, the genius and his inability to really elicit emotion. He really does seem like he’s in his own world. But we love him just the way he is.
There's like a huge elephant in that room I can feel from just watching. The whole thing between the laws suites between Mile love and Brian. I wonder how many people in there were sitting there just pissed every time mike opend his mouth.
I have always thought that the records should have released in stereo also - 66 and 67. The market for home equipment and FM radio was starting to grow,. I heard Revolver and Pepper in stereo and it was great.
@@timbuckii9 that’s right, thanks. I think Brian Wilson’s model had been always Phil S. “Back to Mono”. A great MUSICAL model but definitely NOT a lifestyle model.

Dawn Murphy 83, he Drowned swimming in the sea, After He had taken Drugs, As Dennis had a drug problem, So sad really because Dennis was a great drummer and a great singer, Hes also the man that started the Beach boys.
Jackie robinson he hasn't taken drugs, he was drunk.
“this is Brian Wilson...Mike Love’s cousin”.
* Click *
I love their songs.... and this was a great interview.
His cousin Brian Wilson? Does this idiot know anything about the BB?
Dawn Murphy he is his cousin
Well, they ARE cousins.
@@MargotRobbieFan1 I am fully aware. The interviewer did not know apparently.
@@darastiner9812 Watch the clip. The interviewer is clueless.
All these guys are still alive. Come on mike love. You and. Brian get it together before it’s too late family is everything. Beach boys concert tour 2023 24. Make this happen. Family
17:20 ish
Alliteration is not the study of the English language. It is the recurrence of the same consonant sound at the beginning of several words.
Brian is definitely an introvert. The interviewer had to call him out by name, or he wouldn't say nothing.
@@marymagdalene3004 He realizes.
@@marymagdalene3004 Someone had to speak up. It was obvious Brian was going to just sit there and say nothing.
Thats why he's my favorite. He's so relatable
Great self-promotion. I do not believe I have ever heard anything better. I absolutely love how complimentary and kind they are to each other.
From 18:24 - 19:00, Brian Wilson: "Shut the fuck up, Mike."
I love how Bruce ALWAYS wears shorts.
Love Brian. I don't think he's as out of it as we think. He glances at his watch at 16:02 hoping Mike shuts up. Haha. He's bored.
I saw you August 6th in San Diego at The Rady Shell. The Beach Boys were incredible! Thank you Boys for such a memorable night. In My Room is one of my favorites. You brought tears more then once.
"Mike Love.....his cousin Brian Wilson" - his cousin Brian Wilson!?! What kind of an intro is that? It's the other way around............
Yeah, I caught that too!
Yeah I was like WTF
The disrespect was palpable.
I have made music my life and have a masters in it, please let me know if google music is hiring for your job or similar to it, PLEASE!!! sorry to be so direct, but I would give anything to sit in that chair as you did and you did not do well. Hey business is business.
Well Rodrigo, what he had to tell to Brian? He didn't insult him, he only told him to speak close to the mic.... Brian words were not understandable because he kept the mic on his legs.
Legends
Yes Al I agree.... 'Please let me wonder' a great song & harmonies & 'Kiss me baby' also they are2 of my favourites from the Beach Boys...wonderful stuff
Brian is definitely napping from 31:39 to 31:44.....love these guys
And it was great to hear the story behind Disney Girls!
I attended the Beach Boys concert in Berkeley, California. Shortly afterwards, the bandmembers began to feud and canceled the entire tour.
The most uncomfortable interview I've heard in a long time. Brian's looking at his watch, and only one that's really humorous. Good interview. Great music irreplaceable. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent panoramic BB career spanning and confrontational interviewer! Lots of candid give and take. Bravo!
Brian: says something
Mike: (explosives with laughter)
Yeah, coz Brians a funny guy!
:-)
I'm laughing too!
:-D
Mike Love, was a pain in the neck and still is a pain the neck wanting to take the credit for the job done by the other members of the band, Brian Wilson in particular !
michele Poggi ego and jealousy
I love Brian and he deserves all the praise in the world for his magnificent work in the pop sphere, but it almost seems like people kinda kiss up to him no matter what he says or does now. I know i personally would be annoyed if i were Brian sometimes.
Mike HAD to mention "Kokomo" which isn't even a Beach Boys song
What do you mean? I think it is? Can you explain?
@@alika207 I think he means it was made without Brian and Dennis so it’s not worth to be called beach boys
18:39 Imagine the seething white-hot rage fuming within Brian
StormlitAqua the tension between them, especially with Al Mike and Brian was unmistakable. If true words could be said they would have. But they couldn’t.
Four Original Beach Boys with 1/2 of Bruce & Terry.
I saw the Beach Boys last summer and just saw Brian this last week, it's crazy how quickly he'll hop off the piano to get off stage.
He did not want to be re united he does not like Mike at all
David Marks is Ed Leslie and Mike Love is Terry Bollea
Long live the memories of Dennis & Carl Wilson. xoxo The Clarences
I love the story about Little Deuce Coup...getting it on the radio right after it was recorded, and the DJ "happened" to be the co-author of the song...
Brian says the least, but his presence is overwhelming 😊🎉
disneygirls is one of my all time favourite songs Bruce!!!!!
His voice is still as great as it was before which is amazing.
Love Mike Love's voice emphatically
Im glad david lee marks is back. He created the surf guitar sound of the beach boys. He is a forgotten beachboy
Classic Google, making the two non-founding members of the beach boys share the yellow mic.
21:50 the announcer states The Beach Boys are or were the biggest American band at the time, the 4 Seasons had much more chart success at that time and even after.
Nobody knows who the hell the 4 seasons are
@@pancakelegend7826Oh they do, come on.
The only guy there without a hugely overblown ego is the guy who really rates one, but could care less. He's also the only one who is truly a musician. Brian Wilson will go down as one of the greatest musical artists this country has ever produced. Next to Brian, the rest are just hacks.
i like Al Jardine, but you're right about the other 3. I can't stand David Marks or (especially) Mike Love.
Every member made their contributions. Every member was (is) talented.
But, yeah, Mike has done himself zero favors over the years -- particularly in trying to save face over his initial critical opinions of _Pet Sounds_ and _Smile_ .
i love when David marks pull at 8:05
Brian could not wait to get away from Mike.
I don't think Brian appreciated stereo because he's deaf in one ear.
@@timbuckii9 that’s right, thanks. I think Brian Wilson’s model had been always Phil S. “Back to Mono”. A great MUSICAL model but definitely NOT a lifestyle model.
listening to Mike Love is like listening to a 70-something year old millionaire rock star still insist he is smarter and stronger than a 14 year old
Mike "you should listen to" love
