I've gotten a couple requests for a PVC atlatl. I've made and thrown with a few wooden ones and a couple PVC ones as well. I'm still new to it and not particularly good at aiming yet, but I like the PVC throwers better. Probably the ease of getting good flex and putting curves into the thrower easily.
So here it is, a simple semi-basketmaker style atlatl. These are my personal favorites so far.
We'll be making a simple dart for our atlatl from a bamboo or cane garden stake. The stakes I use are six feet long and around 3/8" - 1/2" thick, usually the former on the nock end and the latter on the front end. We'll go over straightening bamboo, one style of point using a duplex nail and how to fletch the dart with duct tape.
    Thanks for watching and enjoy!

So about a week ago I was gathering wood for a fire and I came across a piece of wood that was perfect for an Atlatl thrower. I grabbed another stick that was pretty straight and threw it. I was amazed at how straight and fast it flew. I had never done this before and was blown away by how well it worked on my very first attempt. So I decided to look up some info on it and ran across your youtube channel. Thank you for sharing what you have learned. Your videos have been a great source of info for me.

I've bought some solid, fiberglass rods, at the BIG (Orange) Box store, (these rods are often used to mark a walkway or driveway, or fire hydrant, etc. so that the snow plow driver won't hit them, or so he can see the approximate edge of an obstruction beneath the snow). They are about 4 feet long, are very straight, and quite consistent in cross-section, and density, and have a lot of flex, but are super strong! Perhaps these would make a good "dart/spear" shaft?!...

How do you get the correct spine so the dart flies well. I have seen a lot of videos of people trying use an atlatl. Their darts seem to always not have enough spine to get good flight.

If I can't find bamboo stakes, can I use the green plastic tomato stakes instead?

Nick Joslin yes, but they bend pretty easily, they work well other than that. But you have to have a weighted tip with them

I'm following this video to make cane arrows for my PVC bow. At the moment I don't have access to a belt sander or a grinder, and I plan on using it to take mostly small game anyway, so would leaving the duplex nail blunt instead of sharpening it to a point be OK too?

Douk Douk That would be fine. If you have a file, you can always just file a rough point in. This can even be done after the arrow is built.
      Hope this helps!

What kind of bamboo is that???
In the Philippines there are different kinds of bamboo!

This is Tonkin cane and I also use a couple different arrow bamboos. Pretty much any 3/8" to 1/2" diameter bamboo will work for this.

hi! great tut here. what would you think about using a PVC arrow ?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  9 лет назад

Uncle Ho I've made a PVC arrow, but the problem with PVC is that it is very flexible. So a PVC arrow of a good weight would bee far too weak to be shot and a PVC arrow strong enough to be shot would be really large and heavy.Using PVC for atlatl darts can be fun. They are very heavy, but fly pretty well all things considered.

Great. Yesterday I shot a few bamboo arrows (just cut them and they were still green). I found that they are quite fragile. I also tried to straighten some of them on the kitchen gaz stove but it made them crack..
      I ll keep experimenting !
Keep on the good work updloading nice vids, it s really inspirational.
