I love the part in "Turtle Dreams" where there's hard cuts of people laying on the ground cuz it reminded me of when Mike was at a con and he did the same thing.
So, when Josh said at the beginning that he knew who Meredith Monk was, it got me thinking that her name sounded so familiar... THEN Jay referenced The Big Lebowski as an example of having a parody of performance art in it, that Turtle Dreams seemed like a parody. That's when it hit me! I know Meredith Monk because SHE IS ON THE BIG LEBOWSKI SOUNDTRACK!!!!!! Her song, "Walking Song," is during the scene where The Dude first meets Maude, where she's above him in that harness flinging paint everywhere. This is blowing my fucking mind!!!!!
I know it's been a minute since this episode came out but I just wanted to say, I've employed Mike's Turtle Dreams at closing time method multiple times and it has literally always worked, besides in the instances where my coworkers got so frustrated they shut it off before it got the chance to work it's magic. Customers always remark "Sorry for overstaying our welcome" like yeah, I bet after being subjected to this shit you sure fucking are.
So weird factoid about Meredith Monk: they reference the Big Lebowski while covering her video, but her own music was used in that film. Her music was also used in the David Byrne film True Stories that RLM did a Re:View episode. She's actually collaborated with a lot of well known talented artists. If going to art school taught me one thing it's that talented artists often make total and complete garbage, I guess Meredith made Turtle Dreams on an off day :/
It’s the Walking Song! Oh my god that’s crazy. I’ve owned that soundtrack for 20 years and have inadvertently listened to it more then I care to admit - Well dome on making that connection it truly has just blown my mind down. First Rich burns down his grandma's house with french fries, now he burns down the RLM studios by smashing up lighting kits. Rich is not cool about fire safety.
The guys are overthinking Turtle Dreams. The artist was inspired while wondering what her pet turtle, Neutron, dreamed of. My interpretation is the turtle sees its owner about all day but cannot comprehend it's owners actions in a meaningful way, so in the turtle's dream humans are just randomly moving around making strange noises. In other parts of the dream, the turtle is moving about random locations.
I'm glad I came across your post. Because I abhor deconstructionist art like Turtle Dreams. But you have suggested a simple interpretation that is much more humble and believable. You describe more plausibly what Meredith Monk could not with her "high-minded", post-modern, ivory tower academic rhetoric. If it is about what a turtle might think of the world around her when she is a person's pet, then there's substance to the art and it provides a simple context for interpretation and, thus, enjoyment and appreciation. This is why I can appreciate paintings from the Romantic era and poetry from Transcendentalism: what would ordinarily be complete crap and worth throwing in a fire is given substance that can be grasped by the mind and, therefore, enjoyed and appreciated. It is given substance by a simple clue about its context-- a title, a short description, and/or other writings/paintings from the artist. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox. Thank you for your post. You put it simply, which I greatly appreciate.
This is a true story. One day years ago I came out of the grocery store to find a turtle sitting in a bare dirt area next to where I had parked my bicycle. I waited for a while to see if someone came to claim it, but no one did. So, I took it home. The next day I let it loose in a wetlands area near my house. As soon as I set it down in the grass it sprinted into the water and swam off - happily, I like to think. If nothing else, Turtle Dreams reminded me of my turtle friend. "I went to the ssssstore..." Indeed.
That clip of the geriatric foot being rubbed came on just as I bit into a particularly overdone edge-piece of meatloaf, and the combined effect has not only completely sterilized me but also allowed me to see into the 4th dimension whenever I sneeze. I'll be coming after RLM for damages.
Turtle Dreams is legit just what Meredith Monk thought a turtle may dream about and how they experience the world, there is no deeper meaning whatsoever. It was largely inspired by her pet turtle Neutron

Meredith Monk apparently has a Star Trek connection, too. Found this: In 1995, Monk went where no experimental artist had gone before: Star Trek. Albeit a rare, audio-only episode of Star Trek, Monk is listed in the credits as composer along with fellow musician, Theo Bleckmann. “Star Trek: Envoy” follows Captain Sulu in the “Captain Sulu Adventures” series. In the episode, Sulu acts as an envoy to a historic peace settlement between the warring races, the Krikiki and the Den-Kai. Monk and Bleckmann composed music for the Krikiki/Den-Kai Ensemble, although it’s not clear which artist represents the Krikiki race or the Den-Kai. Help, Trekkies?

That’s because the most important skill for any artist is salesmanship. Art only has as much value as we attribute to it. You have to convince an audience to see value where there may be none. That’s why most (all?) avant-garde performers are unapologetic con artists.

In interviews, Meredith Monk has explained Turtle Dreams as being about the endurance of something slow and earnest, and how that spirit can survive the end of our fast-paced, chaotic society. I think this idea is most apparent with the plodding, honest organ refrain that repeats throughout the piece, which outlasts all the chaos in the vocals. Similarly, the simple, side-to-side movement of the dancers outlasts the rest of the erratic choreography. In short, the turtle will walk through the ruins of our cities.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Turtle Dreams. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Meredith's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Turtle Dreams truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Meredith's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Turtle Dreams tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. Actually, it is a thing; cat droppings can contain a parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis. So it is often recommended that women who are pregnant or plan to be pregnant soon should (if possible) have someone else change the litter box, or else be VERY careful, and sure to thoroughly wash their hands immediately after.

In other parts of the dream, the turtle is moving about random locations.
this is such a cute fact!
This should be a pinned comment, lol.

"I went to the ssssstore..." Meredith Monk apparently has a Star Trek connection, too.
Well their vocals remind me of the Thermians from Galaxy Quest, so a Star Trek connection makes perfect sense.

"We're not looking for trouble today. We're just looking for meats that taste delicious!" That' s how you found trouble in the first place, pregnant teenagers!
Well, tasting alone would get them in too much trouble...
STILL looking for that juicy Shaq meat?
Really puts "wait for the juices to run clear, not red" in a new light.
The first time in a rap song where 'I know your kitty is lookin' real pretty' and they're talking about an actual cat.
😂😂😂😂😂
“The only thing I know is I don’t want Massaging the elderly.” That’s massagonistic, Rich.
*slide whistle*
Also, quality taste in best girls.
Wouldn't it be more like massagophobic XD
Unfortunately for Rich, Mike's massagechistic.
@@Asparaesque Ritsu 😳
Seeing four grown men sit and watch the elderly get massaged is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a month.
And VHS tapes of it will be sitting in those ruins.
Oh.
Ah, so she really is just an avant garde art asshole.
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Turtle Dreams tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
Or maybe Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird wrote that on acid
Maude Lebowski is listening to Meredith Monk when she flies on the ropes in The Big Lebowski.
Oh cool! I *love* Walking Song!
Her music is also featured in True Stories as seen in Re:View. Goddamit, boys, focus!
...Johnson?
I truly loved Walking Song then dug deeper into her work. For 5 minutes. Most shallow hole I've ever dug.
Came to the comment section to see if someone mentioned this. Nice!
Mike: "I would love a party just like this."
[Jay will remember that.]
Hopefully they will bring it back.
Mikes supersoft birthday party.
Great now I'm getting turned on at the thought of Jay dressed as a princess servicing the master of the manor this is all your fault

Jay was actually spot on in mentioning the Big Lebowski segment, as that was in fact a Meredith Monk composition. The Coen brothers used her music for that sequence.
had to scroll down while the old people footage was on screen, so i didn't feel like i was participating in mike's weird fetish
I like to imagine Meredith Monk is an avid fan of redlettermedia and when she saw Turtle Dreams on the wheel she just froze and stared in disbelief
I kind of feel sorry for her. They judged her and her art that she may be proud of. She's still active and I'm sure she will watch this one day.
The first tape is like a David Lynch’s wet dream that suddenly became a Lars Von Trier nightmare
I was thinking it would be crazy to watch that shit on acid. It was probably made on acid though.
I’m just back from listening to all of “Everything at the End of Time”, so this just sounds like trashy mainstream pop for the masses.
If you sort of like it, check out Philip Glass’s “Einstein on the Beach” - it’s hypnotic but it does feel like you are going nuts
If you put the clips of it on mute and play a Talking Heads song in the background, it kind of works
@@mfenn7325 I thought of Einstein on the Beach as well, but Philip Glass' music is a million times more engaging. Repetitive, yes, but once you get over the initial surprise, the rhythmic shifts are pretty captivating, and the winds really bring the instrumentation together into some great textures.
35:27 "Dolphins are famously rapey." Hahaha, oh my god. It's true, but the phrasing combined with Rich's super confident delivery made this line extra funny to me. Thanks for the video.
I had to RUclips the turtle dreams video. I watched it whilst enjoying a single plum floating in perfume served in a man's hat.
You pretentious fraud!
Your Simpsons game is strong, good sir.
You're taking things to strange new places.
The more superior meal would have been a pip in steam.

Wow, I can't believe they didn't mention Felissa Rose is the actress who played Angela Baker in Return to Sleepaway Camp AND Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor!
I'm sure that anybody interested in her and Sleepaway Camp already know that, but might have missed the video where she raps as a pregnant lady to young mothers.
She's the resident Mangled Dick Expert on _The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs._
In Turtle Dreams, the turtle leaving the swamp to go on an adventure in the city is basically the plot of The Muppet Movie, but with a frog.
