- The Su-30SM has an outstanding capability to turn in a dime and reverse the direction of flight (hence the funny title), but jokes aside, the way this jet manages to just turn around in the air at the whim of the pilot is simply mind-boggling. Much more so when the plane is doing that just bare 100m above your head, roaring with full afterburner for almost 15 min straight!
Maybe this is the plane equivalent to the God of Mischief and Misdirection... wouldn't surprise me if there was a parallel universe where a Loki variant assumed this form, LMAO.
This flight demonstration was performed at the MAKS Airshow in Russia by Irkut corporation test pilots, and in a single performance they included a mind-boggling formation tailslide, close-coupled formation flight, take-off and landing, high energy bleed WVR dogfight mockup and plenty of post-stall solo maneuvers to make your head go boom.
By the way, the pilots (Vyacheslav and Evgeniy Averyanov / Вячеслав и Евгений Аверьянов) are father and son respectively, and are accompanied by a couple of pilots from the Russian fleet of Naval Aviation (Авиация Военно-морского флота России).
The Su-30SM multirole fighter aircraft (Сухой Су-30CM; NATO reporting name: Flanker-H; SM stands for production, modernized) was developed by JSC Sukhoi Design Bureau for the Russian Air Force. It is an advanced derivative of the Su-30MK combat aircraft family. It is designed both to gain air superiority and engage ground and surface targets. The aircraft uses canard surfaces and TVC (thrust vector control) engines, a combination that allows the aircraft to perform post-stall, high angle of attack maneuvers that very few fighter jets can match. Its available weapons include a wide range of air-to-air missiles and precision-guided air-to-ground munitions as well as a large-caliber automatic cannon. Being a bi-seater, the Su-30SM can also be used to train pilots to fly advanced single-seat fighter jets. These aircraft have been in production for the Russian Air Force since 2012. The first SU-30SM performed its maiden flight on 21 September 2012.
The 30SM is a specialised version of the thrust-vectoring Su-30MKI and MKM export variants that have been adapted and further modernized for use within the Russian military. It is produced by the Irkut Corporation. Russia's Defence Ministry was impressed with the MKI's envelope and performance so 30 Su-30SMs were ordered for the Russian Air Force in early 2012. A contract for 60 more of the multirole fighter was signed later on. Russia currently has 80 jets of the type in service within its military and some have already seen action for the first time in Syria.
The Su-30SM is considered as 4+ generation fighter jet. The new version has been upgraded based on Russian military requirements for radar, radio communications systems, friend-or-foe identification system, global positioning and inertial navigation systems, ejection seats, weapons, and other aircraft systems. The aircraft is equipped with the Bars-R radar and a wide-angle HUD. The airframe of Su-30SM is made of titanium and high-strength aluminium alloys. The nose of the fuselage houses cockpit, radar sections and avionics bay. The glass cockpit accommodates two pilots in tandem configuration. The open architecture design also allows the integration of further modernized avionics in the future. The Su-30SM is powered by two AL-31FP by-pass turbofan reheated engines that provide a maximum unrefuelled flight range of 3,000km. The aircraft is also equipped with a flight refuelling probe and system.

As an American, i have to say this is truly a superb airplane, and very sleek. I'd say its excellent in looks and manueverability. Too bad, we can't appreciate technology, without making it a fight, rather than putting our minds together to explore technology for the benefit of mankind.

Considering the US had thrust vectoring planes in 1988 I doubt they care. We've already flown our 6th generation fighter. Meanwhile Russia can't produce more than 10 SU 57s. Win 🇺🇸

В Жуковском полоса длинная, можно без тормозного. А каждый выпуск парашюта это лишняя работа для парашюто-укладчиков. Летчики думают о наземном персонале, наземный персонал - о летчиках.

Может быть посадил машину не в начале полосы, а поближе к трибунам. Может быть специально выпустил ТП, чтобы продемонстрировать короткий пробег.

All of Russia’s aircraft are engineered and designed for air to ground rolls. They also need a lot of guidance from radar and a ground unit to complete missions. They would get spanked air to air or in a battle. Having to ping data from a remote ground location to operate in the air has its draw backs….like…..blowing up the ground units…their aircraft are very limited. They also all have a huge radar cross section. They look cool and are agile but in a battle they would be picked up, locked on and taken out quick

Forget the F-35, Su-30 can run circles around it ! Let's reverse the shoes: If Su-30 was a U.S.-made, whole world be in line to buy and bypass Russian-made F-35!
The whole point behind the F-35 is you can't run circles around a plane you don't even know is in your airspace. Its software over hardware.
The US has the F-22 (Until that's replaced by a sixth-generation air dominance fighter after 2030) and soon the F-15EX as more dedicated
counter-air mission alternatives.

Su-30, Su-35 have excellent jet engines, in addition, they have fairly good PFAR radars, but the main thing is an excellent electronic warfare system - a radio electronic jamming system and an opto-electronic target tracking system. And most importantly, they have long-range missiles - R-37M - reach other aircraft at a distance of up to 400 km.

Su's are pieces of art defying the laws of physics in the sky. They a huge fighter jets. I'd like to see these next to f16, f18, f35 & f22. They have to be 30-40% bigger than those single seaters.

In my uneducated opinion, like it's US counterpart, the F-15, they are both excellent platforms and will be around for some time to come. ❤️ Them both!
The 4 gen planes willl definitely be around for years since 5th gen is too costly and upgrades are being applied to 4th gen that give most of them 5th gen or close to capabilities. Thrust vectoring is being applied to 4th gen planes along with new radars and sensors.
They will end up supplementing up coming 5th gen planes as well as serve as defence on the home front.

What I want to know, did the designers build them intentionally to be able to do these gravity defying maneuvers? Or did the test pilots in the course of seeing where the edges of it's stall envelope were realize that relative to other categorically similar aircraft it almost didn't have any edges?
I think the answer is, a bit of each. I'm pretty sure the design requirement was to improve nose-pointing capability at high alpha and beta ranges, which is what the TV does. Presumably should also help alleviate trim drag at supersonic speeds. So it is meant to be able to do crazy stuff for that alone, but the very limits are something that the test pilots have to work out indeed.
Imagine the poor guys in rear seats...

Varios miles. Los pilotos que vuelan en los shows son pilotos de prueba de la Sukhoi / MiG / Yakovlev... antiguos pilotos militares contratados luego por el sector privado para ayudar en el diseño de las máquinas. No es sólo el número de horas, sinó la formación y variedad de modelos que han pilotado, llevándolos al límite como parte de su trabajo de pilot de pruebas! ;)

@@Airguardian Firefox with Clint Eastwood (I'm an 80's kid), He plays a retired test pilot with PTSD from Vietnam that's asked by the government to help steal a one of a kind Soviet fighter that fly's beyond MACH 3 and has advanced flight controls that are controlled by the pilots thoughts, Clints character had Russian parents so could fly the aircraft, "Think Russian..." Was what one of the characters told him in order to control the aircrafts weapon control systems👍🏻🏴
