Prost lost out to Lauda in winning the 1984 WDC by 0.5 points, and Prost lost out to Senna in winning the 1988 WDC by 3 points. You consider who Alain Prost’s teammates were; you must consider that Alain Prost sits behind Juan Manuel Fangio and Lewis Hamilton as the all-time greatest F1 driver, especially considering how unreliable the 1980s F1 cars were. Both Lando and Oscar are great drivers, but Oscar has the more analytical, intelligent, strategic, and mature mindset, which is the same thing you can say about Prost.
But it all comes down to pace, and Lando very clearly has more of it. It is 9-5 advantage Lando in this years races. Qualifying this year is also 13-2 in Lando’s favor. I rate Piastri very highly, he is excellent. But Lando is faster.
@@Rimpreza sure but look at lando in his second season. Carlos was the better driver and outscored him that year and would you say that is the case now?
@@Rimpreza Lando is a damn good driver and so is Oscar. The prime goal of Oscar’s this year was to get tyre management under control and get better at his race pace management. It’s very rare for someone to be as competitive as Oscar in their second season. At the moment, Oscar is actually on par with Charles Leclerc and Ayrton Senna regarding second season performance. What I do see, is that Oscar approaches F1 weekends in the same way as Prost. His tyre management has been coming along nicely, as well as his overtakes. Come 2025, Lando may do better than Oscar in qualifying, but Oscar will most likely do better in the race itself.
Quite an odd interpretation of stats here, although I take your point that Piastri has arguably more of a Prost mentality. 1. 7 of Prost's wins came in the dominant '93 car against Hill in his first season of actual racing and not DNQ in a half-assed team. 2. Prost had 199 starts to Senna's 161. 3. Senna set up his car for qualifying and went all out, Prost focused on race pace and a pragmatic approach to scoring points. Which way is better....? Subjective. 4. Since the way points are allocated and the number races per season is totally different now, trying to grade drivers from different eras based on stats is largely pointless. All you can do is compare them to their contemporaries of the same period. 5. Yeah, Prost had some great teammates, but Lauda was at the end of his career, and Hill, who isn't as talented as Prost's other WDC teammates was at the start. 6. If not for Suzuka and Balestre, Senna may have had 4 titles and Prost only 3. Of course a title can come down to one crucial race or a few points. 7. Since Hamilton often needs his team to tell him what to do to win a race and he can't work out where he is relative to other drivers, and his own instinct can often cost him a win as much as gain him one, I'm not sure that Hamilton qualifies as "all-time great". Especially given that he never beat a teammate like Senna or Prost to a title, and most of his wins/titles are against fairly weak teammates like Bottas and Rosberg. I think Hamilton, Schumacher, Vettel and Verstappen's stats flatter them because of the number of races in a dominant car. And Hamilton more than the others for the sheer number of races. 8. What exactly is the point of 'second season results'? Schumacher and Senna didn't have a car as competitive as Piastri or Hamilton. 9. I think Piastri will have the better career than Norris, assuming they have equally competitive machinery.
@@michaelcobbin look guys, after today it’s pretty clear that he isn’t as fast as Norris. The best drivers don’t need 2 full seasons to be among the fastest. There are places and lines to pick up grip known only to those who know this circuit in their sleep. Lando deserves the win, but don't write off Max for the win either..
Russell would have been good for 3rd if Gasly wasn't ahead giving him dirty air in the wind. The top 4 is going to make for an insane start. Pressure on Max and Lando. And Russell will be looking for a cheeky move.
It is racing, after all, so I'm not sure what a cheeky move would be. Would you call Schumacher's or Senna's moves cheeky? They didn't have time to pull alongside and say "sorry, old man, would you mind if I ever so gently edged in front of you - thanks mate!" And credit to George, every time one of his competitors is in a serious crash, he is checking to see if he needs to stop and help as I did when I raced. Not saying George is always perfect. Are you? I am not.
The comment about Sainz and Williams is ‘not disrespectful’? Really? Certainly negative, and unnecessary. Williams may be back markers now, but consider the travails of McLaren over many seasons.
You seem to ignore the fact that changing conditions might have influenced the results. I heard Albon saying, (and some other drivers too), that the wind made it a bit of a lottery. Lando is probably the right pole-sitter, but the gap might also be flattered by circumstances. 0.5 seconds between Lando and Oscar is not what we've seen lately. And Lewis' 12th place was not how it looked like up to that moment. Is there a possibility that the constant change of conditions had an impact on the results?
Could be, but I think the McLaren is better though and Lando managed to pull out an amazing lap as well. Max made a couple of small mistakes, no doubt due to the car and the changing conditions. I think it is telling that the gap between Lando and Oscar is so big, can't recall when it was that big before. Must have been something due to changing conditions as well yesterday.
I think this time he'll actually hold 1st; especially with such a short distance to T1.. But I do think at some point (likely around the pit stops) Verstappen will be in front.

@youtuber-cc8sx yes, I'd say very setup dependent.. and you can usually take different corners of the same track with different lines that suit them. Late apex onto long straights for example
@@kesh_r For a regular person, it's not easy to tell the difference between how different pilots drive, much less what's due to the cars, what's due to their habits, and what's the overall fastest. Now, according to the table shown Ver is 0.2 seconds behind Nor, but in reality the difference was 0.356 seconds (0.4 seconds if rounded). That is 43.8% off.
It is a shame in a way that within formula 1, real straight fights with near equal machinery are so rare. Because of the impact the machinery and conditions of the moment have, we rarely see those moments, for example often one of the two cars is clearly better due to better tyres. Would be great to see a head to head duel in equal machinery and conditions between the top drivers, such as Max, Lando, Oscar, Lewis, George, Charles and Carlos. I guess we have virtual racing for that.
What do you think a long corner is. It's about distance and time. Shorten less time and distance .. long we'll longer distance and longer time to get round it.
I believe it is what is also called a V corner, spending less time and covering less distance turning and more time driving on the straight before and after the apex.
He's done two videos on it. It's basically extending the straight a bit before turning and not taking a traditional apex which a long corner driver does, who makes the corner longer by rotating the car in a smooth arc. Short corner drivers have less time rotating the car and get the car straighter more quickly after the corner so they can go full throttle faster than a long corner driver.
There is a certain inevitability to Lando winning tomorrow, at least in my mind. I hope Max and RB can pull one out of the bag, as we haven't seen Max win in forever, but "the numbers don't lie", so I wouldn't hold my breath.
I don't know who's being saying Oscar is like Senna . Who ever it was most likely looking for Clicks. He is totally a different type of person and driver. .
If Max can't get to 1st place at the start (the first 3 corners🙏!-) but instead holds on to second place, there is gonna be a chance for him to Undercut Lando...soo it should be an exciting strategic race today!
Hopefully Lando will have finally learnt how to cover off Max off the start. Lewis gets a penalty because he is at a part of the track where there was nothing anyone could do, I guess Lewis will think it was already a lost weekend so why not throw a few grid penalty places in as well.
nothing anyone could do ? he was just on wrong side of track ... so he could have gone the inside , and not the racing line ... like all others did .. rules are clear , he impeded and got penalized .. Lewis knew he f.cked up , reason for his pathetic try to get away with it as usual ..
@@DouweEgbert So much hate, you could almost be a steward. Even Perez said afterwards that Hamilton tried his best to get out the way, it was just the wrong time wrong place - but hey - hate on.

Max definitely playing with fire on pit exit, but the live commentators, so greedy for something to talk about after a wrecked session, seemed to forget Monaco 2022 where the rule was clarified (after a 2021 amendment). The intention is alway to keep the slower car within the exit lane, so the rule became “no car’s tyre may cross the line on pit exit” from the previous wording of “no part of the car may cross” so Red Bull successfully argued on that day all of a wheel has to be over all of the line to “cross the line” and get a penalty. Its a good rule of thumb to say that pit exit white line is a wall, but in F1 now its more accurate to say beyond the line is soft soap 😼
Turn 1 and lap 1 will be interesting tomorrow. Will Peter be calling the stewards on Oscar again? Will Lando finally break that first lap after a pole hoodoo?
Who's calling Oscar the next Senna?! I've heard of him being compared to Prost though. He's definitely the more consistent McLaren driver, highly likely he'll take second in the driver's championship. It'll be Oscar or Max tomorrow for the win after Norris chokes again
Norris the Choker he's not even remotely close to winning in the peanut gallery. He's had over 6 years & this is his best, being beaten by his team mate showing he's only a step removed from Ricciardo.
Prost didn’t get as many poles than what Senna did, but Prost got more wins than Senna. Why? Prost was focused on ensuring that the car was at its best in the GP race itself. Prost was more consistent than Senna. I remember Senna was leading a Monaco Grand Prix, easily out in front, then next minute he crashed it Portier. Why? Senna simply lost focus. Oscar is definitely more Prost like when comes to driving a F1. Since the Miami GP, seems to have gotten better overtaking others, especially on the outside and first two laps, which is Senna like driving.
17:50 Please stop nattering on about Lando yielding to team orders in Hungary (after many laps of team radio bad parenting and teenager petulance) at least long enough to listen to Zak Brown and to Andrea Stells's reasoned explanation of team philosophy and approach. Lando lost a lot more than those 7 points in bad pit calls and slow starts.
Regardless of what Lando lost in pit stops, slow starts, etc. and irrespective of how team Zak and Andrea spun it, he was forced to lose 7 points by team orders.
The problem with Norris is he's mental ability to sustain these techniques & he has proven over the years, he can't. This track will advantage the car in front but I feel the advantage & danger to Norris will come from behind he doesn't like being muscled or harrassed.
@peterwindsor . Peter i love your stuff. Russell would have been good for 3rd if Gasly wasn't ahead giving him dirty air in the wind. The top 4 is going to make for an insane start. Pressure on Max and Lando. And Russell will be looking for a cheeky move.
Oh not, not George with his "cheeky" moves.
Williams may be back markers now, but consider the travails of McLaren over many seasons.
mclaren have been up and down, but have had a lot more ups than Williams have
What channel (causing changeable wind/weather conditions) is Peter talking about? I hope he meant the sea, the North Sea. It's behind the main stands.
You are a God! Your unbelievable perceptiveness and your ability to articulate things so eloquently is a treat. Thank you for your commentaries 🙏🏼
Exactly what I was thinking. With all due respect to Russel and Norris, there is no way in my mind that their teammates are this far behind.

With Lando on P1, Max will win the race,.On the second corner Lando will be second or third.
I think this time he'll actually hold 1st; especially with such a short distance to T1.. But I do think at some point (likely around the pit stops) Verstappen will be in front.
mclarens are to fast. if lando is smart just dont take to much risk and let max go if no other option, then pass max easily at lap 3 or 4. that mclaren with new updates are just fire

If Lando is in P1 after lap 1, I'm pretty sure McLaren will be telling Oscar to support Lando 100% so it's very much Lando's race to lose.

‘still going on about Norris’ inherent superiority over Piastri. It’s getting tiresome. Let the results speak for themselves
Wasn’t Norris better than piastri ?!
@@964cuploveI have edited my comment accordingly
Yep his bias is getting boring
What bias? Seriously. He's been lauding Piastri's skills for ages. Today, Norris put in a stellar performance and deserves the praise. Some of you people need to understand that F1 pundits will sometimes praise a driver at the expense of your favourite driver. Now, who's biassed?
Certainly not how I heard it. It was more like look how impressive landos drive was against an equally impressive team mate.
Ut Oh, Peter is talking about short corners again....
someone really needs to tell Lando about short corners. Im sure he will be hugely grateful

@youtuber-cc8sx yes, I'd say very setup dependent.. and you can usually take different corners of the same track with different lines that suit them. Late apex onto long straights for example
Dreary times for Peter, with Lando annihilating all his short corners theorycrafting.
Never understood the obsession with this tbh. He even said that Senna was a long corner driver
@@kesh_r For a regular person, it's not easy to tell the difference between how different pilots drive, much less what's due to the cars, what's due to their habits, and what's the overall fastest. Having a nearly proprietary way to rank the drivers via "short corners" is therefore quite an advantage for a youtuber. Does that hold any water? Not like a regular person could argue Peter.
Funny isn't it, that RB is losing its edge exactly as predicted by Jos Verstappen at the start of the season?
this hero to villain, then back to hero mentality in F1 commentary is just getting rediculous. last week Lando was broken by Oscar, the new number one at mclaren - now Lando is king again. Just stop it.
I find that's more with the punters on RUclips. Peter seems to have gone from loving Oscar in 2023 to not loving him in 2024.

@@JC-lu4se I have been seeing this as well from Peter. Clearly, Peter is biased towards Lando. As an Australian, it pissing me off that Australian can be so unfair against an up and coming Australian sports person competing at the top level and favour the British driver.

Is S1+S2+S3 = total lap time? Might I suggest to use sector times with 3 digits after decimal point or check if they are correctly rounded to one digit after decimal point? Now, according to the table shown Ver is 0.2 seconds behind Nor, but in reality the difference was 0.356 seconds (0.4 seconds if rounded). That is 43.8% off.
Let's see if Peter's Lando can turn Saturday's P1 to a win.
Haas wasting a new set of softs for Hulk to go out first in Q1 was an absolutely ridiculous idea. Haas should be doing their banker a lot later.
I like the old track configuration more. I especially don't like turn 13. Let them go fast.
Lando is again looking very sharp, but will his first-corner-curse strike once more on sunday?
thanks
Must have been a biggie if Logan dropped it between turns 1 and 2 - seeing as he got out of the car at turn 4...
3:53 Albon quali result discounted due to illegal floor volume. Starting back of the grid. 😢
Too bad…
can someone please make a visual diagram of what Peter means by “short corners”
@@MMAli-rq8kd A V line means you're turning earlier. Short corners means extending the straight and turning later.
He is totally a different type of person and driver. .
If Max can't get to 1st place at the start
(the first 3 corners🙏!-) but instead holds on to second place, there is gonna be a chance for him to Undercut Lando...soo it should be an exciting strategic race today!

Oscar, definitely the more consistent driver, even after being comfortably behind for two years? 😂😂 Yeah, that's some great logic, bud. Well done.
🤣🤣🤣
But lando is beating the living shit out of Oscar? He is 2 champ positions up with double the podiums and up 15-4 in quali
Max on higher downforce than Checo , or not all the engine modes anymore?
17:50 Please stop nattering on about Lando yielding to team orders in Hungary (after many laps of team radio bad parenting and teenager petulance) at least long enough to listen to Zak Brown and to Andrea Stells's reasoned explanation of team philosophy and approach. Lando lost a lot more than those 7 points in bad pit calls and slow starts.
Regardless of what Lando lost in pit stops, slow starts, etc. and irrespective of how team Zak and Andrea spun it, he was forced to lose 7 points by team orders.
@@RayMelville Norris only got the *potentisll* for those 7 points because of team orders. Piastri had him beat that day
The problem with Norris is he's mental ability to sustain these techniques & he has proven over the years, he can't. This track will advantage the car in front but I feel the advantage & danger to Norris will come from behind he doesn't like being muscled or harrassed.
Logan binned it coming out of turn 3 not turn 1
