    My only issue with it is the pacing after Sigurd is rescued.. you do so many missions that don’t benefit the main story and feels more DLC than anything. Other than that it’s good. Loved the end too

    Great video, and I agree with your points. I loved the interactions with Aelfred, Guthrum and the others, I'm glad they got the original VAs back, in terms of tone and writing it felt a lot like the base game (Darby wrote this). I actually really liked the interactions between William and Basim, and the final bleeding effect scene. It sounds goofy in concept but Darby was really able to pull it off in an AC sort of way lol (Does the term solar flare mean anything to you?).
    And yeah, the set up for Mirage's MD is smart too (William will use it to verify Basim's sincerity), looking forward to it.

      @@WalshieYT1 that’s because the series is no longer narrative based. That left the building when they introduced dialogue and sex choices. Origins while still weak in certain areas at least still had a good story (plus DLC) and Bayek as a strong character. This little DLC shows how strong an AC narrative could be again if they just let Darby write out a great story and expand characters into something great. Ubisoft doesn’t care though, they are doing the same dialogue/ sex choice shit for the Japan game. This is why old fans of AC including myself and old streamers like yourself and Lazeers criticized the direction it went because it forgoes great lore, story, and characters for shitty executed rpg elements. This DLC gives me slight hope for Mirage but without any sense of gameplay yet, I remain skeptical. I still remain skeptical because the live service plan along with rpg bullshit for Japan so I might for once finally wait for reviews before I buy because they fooled me once with AC Valhalla being a potential all out AC game when it was like 15% AC stuff and 85% boring generic Viking shit. DLC were also just boring Viking arcs.

      @@mrv3509AC lore isn’t purely Assassin’s, it’s What it stands for the party’s that contributed and The purpose they are trying to achieve (peace and freedom) the Cassandra and Eivor’s arc was very important to serving that purpose. They are not longer fighting against templars, but the worlds survival as well… so that’s the modern day assassin’s prerogative now. All the Assassin’s stuff is just the history they look back on to aid them in achieving that goal. The survival or the planet. Only reason why assassins are important is because the ISU chose them to carry their will since they are more aligned in value then the Templars.

    As someone who never really changed his mind on AC Valhalla and truly always did love it (flaws and all) I was definitely at least discouraged to admit that given how increasingly unpopular it has begun to be to say anything positive about the game and with the DLCs not playing with the biggest strengths the main game's story had I was definitely almost forgetting why I ever held this game in such a good regard, but this final update not only gave Eivor a great ending to her story but it also reminded me of what Valhalla meant to me back in 2020 and why I will always love it.

      Thank you! As soon as the new Cormac is out and read, it will have my undivided attention. I've ordered Jane Smiley's "The Sagas of the Icelanders" as it looks to be a pretty solid overview - do you have any recs beyond that?

    • @DCMCDXVIII
      @DCMCDXVIII Год назад +5

      @@WalshieYT1 Nice coincidence. I'm waiting for my Cormac boxed set too.
      The Smiley book was our bible, so that's a good place to start. Focus on "Egil's Saga" and some of the shorter stories first. "The Tale of Sarcastic Hali" is amazing too. Stick with the longer works if you can -- they don't have a traditional dramatic structure, they're more like shaggy dog stories, so they don't pull you forward like a modern novel. But they have an incredible amount of amazing incident and anecdote. We tried to replicate this feeling somewhat.
      As far as other texts go. The Poetic Edda is crucial, the Prose Edda less so. Jackson Crawford's translation of the former was very useful, especially his version of the Havamal, the so called "Wisdom of Odin". And lastly, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles helped with some historical detail.
      Have fun!

    I agree with your analysis, I did enjoy this DLC overall and I think the dialogue was very interesting and emotionally charged and you can tell Darby had his hand alone in all of it. I definitely would have liked a lot more interaction between other characters and clearly they may have been strapped for time or budget as it was surprisingly brief, but I think they salvaged a lot of Eivor's character development for me and it is probably the best we were going to get from the generally underwhelming state of Valhalla's post launch.
    Definitely some interesting setup for Mirage too. At first I was afraid Roshan being confirmed alive would ruin some of the intrigue around the story, but after playing the quest I'm actually quite curious to see how her relationship between Basim evolves and what ends up driving them apart, and why she leaves the Hidden Ones for a period of time. Was a little shocked that she didn't bring up or ask about Basim at all, and he didn't even comment on seeing his mentor in the simulation even but again that just might be a budget thing. Still not overly confident in Mirage delivering incredible gameplay or anything but I am pretty invested in seeing where the narrative goes.

    • @WalshieYT1
      @WalshieYT1  Год назад +6

      The budget/scope really is the sticking point. While the dialogue is virtually flawless, I can't help but find myself longing for elaboration and additional context in every single memory.
      Narrative really has been the most exciting thing about Mirage and the DLC only really amplified that imo (though that's kind of a given when we're yet to see gameplay) The setting is such an undefined and ripe context for an Assassin story, and there's genuinely so much MD potential in the ancestor and descendant being one and the same. Judging by interviews and development time, I expect the game to play just fine - honestly I'm pretty accepting of that so long as the story does actually deliver.

    Great review, man! I felt mostly the same way. I liked all of what was present, just wish there was more to each memory as you stated. But I enjoyed its sombre and reflective tone and really loved the final two scenes. Randvi's absence was weird but i didnt really care all too much about that character rofl.
    As for mirage, I am definitely a little more interested in its story after both the MD set up and the Roshan quest. Still not feeling excitement or hype yet, because we havent seen anything thus far and it is being made by a new Studio with new narrative leads to the series.
    I have to say, it feels good not being so jaded and negative about this series anymore. I am looking forward to whatever they do next

    I am curious as to who the protagonist of the Feudal Japan AC game will be. It should be named Tomoe (after Tomoe Gonzen) and should be set in Heian Period Japan, set 200-300 years after AC Valhalla, so set around the same time as AC 1.

Why would you set it before the feudal system entirely? Adding to that, Feudal Japan was a VERY long era from the 12th Century to the end of the Boshin War in the late 1860's, so we don't know when Codename Red is set during that huge length of time.
