I'm not really concerned about which one is better but I think people sleep on AC1 hard and treat like an awkward beta for AC2 rather than a genuinely great game, that is one of the best games in the series, at least for me

That feels like a really succint way of putting it. I think people see Assassin's Creed 2 as a naturally progression simply because it's more ambitious, when really there's a lot of significant differences between the two.

hyped to hear your thoughts on this, and glad you're bringing it up. I personally enjoy AC 1 to AC 2 more. There are certain elements in the aesthetic, story and movement that I think AC 1 does best. I also like the stark contrast between modern day and ancestor storyline that never seems to be done again in the franchise. Every scene in the modern day of AC 1 felt tense and mysterious, and you really felt as lost as desmond as you slowly uncovered more pieces of the puzzle, read emails the hinted at a slightly distopian version of earth, and it would have been really cool to see them carry this style of modern day for the next games. Hope AC 1 gets a remaster (if its done well)

It doesn't need a remaster the game still looks incredible. A 4k60fps patch via backwards compatibility is all it really needs. That's the biggest reason the Series X is ideal.

i know a lot of people will disagree wiith me. but revelations is my favourite, maybe its because the music in that was really good, or its the fact that Altiar was in it aswell as journying with Ezio. the atmosphere of AC1 and the contrast of AC2 being so different really made both stories feel immersive in its own good way. Which is why both were the best in their own rights. but to bring both stories together and on top of that with Desmond too. it really gave me so much to love about the franchise at the time.

The one problem was Desmond doesn't do anything in the game and Ezio didn't need to face Templars in his story. We already got that from Altair's story. Give Desmond a actual story and replace those boring puzzles with more interactions with subject 16. You know the guy we heard so much about for years.

I agree with a lot of your commentary and I find it really interesting to hear opinions from fans of the series that have grown with it and can glance back with a more critical regard to it. I recently watch a video that pinpointed some of the elements you describe relatively to the story in ACII and how it became a sort of melo-drama where the first game was more grounded and adult throughout, and I think this is the kind of thing we tend to absolutely overlook when we're a 12-13 y/o but that bites back years late when returning to these games.
I would like to add a point that I have never seen discussed yet and it has to do with level design. A bit in reference to NakeyJakey's video on Rockstar, I feel like Ubisoft felt into the same trap of overdirecting every move of the player from AC2 onwards. In AC1, you do not have markers per say, missions are located on the map but starting them doesn't necessitate of you to be at a x, y, z position in the map to kick it off. Thus, you can approach most missions the way you desire. The game can also be completed with no usage of any HUD since all the information are given orally by the NPCs or presented in the games' world. In AC2 however, this is not possible anymore because the level design made it that you have to be at a precise point on the map to start the cinematic to engage a mission. This breaks down a lot of player agency as we are forced to participate in missions in a determined order and do not have a lot of room to decide how to complete missions really, as we are tasked with killing a set number of enemies or finding a set number of chests, etc. This to me is maybe the biggest sin of AC2, because it turned what was a sandbox assassination game à la Hitman into a GTA assassination game, and those are two very different concepts. This only got worse with the guilt-tripping full syncronisation objectives starting ACB and all.
The closest return to classic AC level-design was in Unity with the Black Box missions but even then it still holds your hand since it gives you all the information you would obtain from investigations and you can then pick and choose which one you prefer. I think it would've been so much better to have side missions before assassinations in which we can find out the best entries, guards, etc. and then get rewarded with more opportunities to complete our assassination mission.
Anyways, that was my two cents. ^^

AC1 just has this... Bleak sci-fi mystery atmosphere to it that I love and sadly, none of the games after it have replicated that. AC2 is definitely a great game and arguably one of the best in the series, but it really did change the overall "mood" of the franchise and I prefer the original version.
Also, do you (or anyone who happens to read this) have a link to a video explaining the incredible advanced parkour inputs. Even in just this video I caught a glimpse of Altair performing something I have no idea how the player pulled it off. I do pretty well with the parkour systems in 1 - Revelations but I KNOW I don't know everything and can learn a lot still.

Absolutely agree, I think after all these years I've realised that AC1 is the perfect assassins creed experience and that I've become so mentally drained by these games that I am starting to see that I'm a AC purist (sounds cringe), but I really feel AC1 is a timeless game. After reading the book Secret Crusade, it became more clear how well crafted AC1 is and how there is no bloat or goofy dialogue, it takes itself seriously. I could go on forever tbh, it is the best AC and will always be.

It also doesn't really make you do or even have that much content that is outside of what an Assassin would want to do, my target pretty much never left my mind, no matter what I was doing, I was always thinking of "how is this gonna help me take out my target?" and it almost always did in a way that made the time I spent feel meaningful, in a game like AC Valhalla or even Origins to a lesser slightly extent, I'd often forget the game even had assassinations which for me, breaks the fantasy a lil bit

Ac2 is severely overrated. It to me is good but far from a masterpiece like so many claim it is. Assassin's Creed 2 was the start of when the series began dumbing down its narrative and theme. For example the game paints Templars as evil for the sake of beung evil. The original game it wasn't so black and white. They made very compelling points that make you stop and think maybe he's right. It would cause cities to deteriorate without their leader. None of the other games ever do that. The combat is criminally underrated. You have to learn the intricacies of it not just spam attacks and counters. You had to time your counters to get the counter kill. None of that ever returns except for maybe Unity another underrated game. Another step backwards AC2 made was with the graphics. I have no idea what happened there it was two years later. Hell I remember Game Informer rated AC1 higher than AC2. I think I still have that issue. Yet AC2 is what many would say is the jumping off point as if the first game is trash. The changes AC2 made are what a lot of sequels do,streamline and dumb things down to be more profitable and it works. The same happened to Mass Effect. ME2 streamlined things and focused more on action and most hail it as a masterpiece like AC2 for much of the same reasons. Even though to get so popular they had to sacrifice everything to get there.

A very mature video, not biased by nostalgia. AC II is a great game, but in here you described all of my initial issues with it when I first played it in comparison to the first game, which is also my favorite of the series. AC I's atmosphere is more atune with what Assassin's Creed is, while AC II feels more like a Zorro adventure, which isn't bad, by any means, but it is simply too romantic, and AC I was anything but romantic. The moral ambiguity of the first game's story and characters is also a highlight that is lost in the second with its cardboard villains and likeable, yet simplistic heroes. Ezio is more a classic hero, while Altair is more a man guided by increasing wisdom and understanding of the world surrounding him.
And the gameplay is also another important topic. I like than in AC II they refined parkour, but I didn't like the changes in the combat. AC I's combat has the light and heavy attacks, doing combo kills is easier but more strategic and the counter window is smaller. Enemies are also faster, smarter and more aggressive and they chase you to the end of the world.
AC I's aggressive, more challenging and less romantic vibe gives a more adequate atmosphere, and as such, pulling off assasinations, open combat, parkour escapes or social stealth, ends up being more rewarding for me than it felt in AC II.

I think it fits for AC2 to be much more vibrant given that it takes place in a much less dark time period in some of the most beautiful cities still standing, AC1 needs to look more depressing since it takes place during a brutal series of wars that lasted for almost 4 centuries that was ultimately pointless

The same kind of vibe of watching your back with danger round every corner *could* have also been captured again in unity or syndicates settings - had they chosen to go in that direction, but they just…didn’t. :( Makes the original all the more special.

I think AC 1 is a very good AC game but that it had major problems in the structure of the gameplay. Missions were very repetitive and considering the gameplay is the most important part of a game, it's obvious why AC 2 is better than 1 just thanks to that. I do agree on some aspect of what you said, however I think it needs to be given a context. When we talk about social stealth for example, it's true that hiding in ac1 among people wearing something just like youfeels better than just hiding in the crowd in ac2. However Ta also true that they couldn't do the same thing because the two games take place in two very different times and places meaning that they had to find another way to do that exact same thing but that was better contextualised in Ezio's time. For what concerns templars, AC 1 does a really good job. Ac2 definitely steps back in that regard, however we have to consider another thing. AC 2 is about Ezio's revenge. If the people that killed his family weren't templars he would have still tried to kill them. It just happened that be was part of a family of assassins that was killed by some templars. That's why templars are depicted badly in ac 2, because we see them through Ezio's eyes. They are just enemies who killed our family and we seek revenge. Ezio in ac 2 don't give a shot of templars or assassins basically for most of the story. He just wants to revenge his family from the people who killed them. Si while I agree it can be considered a step back, on the other hand it's just a completely different story that doesn't focus on assassins or templars but focuses on Ezio's journey. Ezio's trilogy is literally Ezio's life, we see him from the day he was born to the day he dies in embers.
For what concerns combat I can't say anything, love them both but I can't judge because I am one of those that enjoyed more the unity combat where you were almost forced to act like an assassin in the shadow rather than enter and kill them all with the sword.
If AC 1 had a remake or a remastered (but with some changes in the missions to make the m less repetitive) it would be amazing. But apparently Unisoft has other plans

Hi Walshie, excellent video. I did enjoy watching it. I wanted to leave a comment since this topic as been on my mind as of lately too. Especially since I have replayed both these two games a few weeks ago myself.
I appreciated the topic you brought up about the the atmospheres of both games, the world in the modern day, and the world of the past. In Assassin's Creed [1], the Aberstgo building made me felt like I was being watched and felt imprisoned, enforcing the state Desmond was in. In the same game, the world created by the Animus when we visited Altair's memories were quite special that none of the later games never really recreated again. the way the worlds were colored, saturated; the way the cities felt quite alive, and uncanny, really made me think that this isn't a "real" place. Anytime I am playing as Altair and seeing my environment I get subtle reminder that the world I am in is a construct of an animus. With the other AC games I don't get that feeling anymore, the atmospheres are "real" and pretty, and are just another fun place to explore. I like what you said in the video that Assassin's Creed II was just different, and I agree with that. Assassin's Creed II cities are one of my favorite places to explore in the entire series.
Another topic of interest to me are the two game's driving narratives with their modern day. Although the AC series have a lot of historical settings, I believe the AC series is not a historical fiction; at least with how the modern day shapes its larger narratives. In Assassin's Creed [1], they did an excellent job Introducing Abstergo and showing how big and threatening it is to society with its control, and it left plenty of room for future installments to show how big and nefarious Abstergo really is. The one thing I wish they did do more of in Assassin's Creed II and other installments were to do something more with some of the cool elements introduce in Assassin's Creed [1]: The Philadelphia Project and Eye-Abstergo. I think one of the major flops in the Assassin's Creed series is that we didn't get enough chances to fight back against Abstergo in the Modern day. When AC 1 and AC 2 first came out, I thought when 2012 rolled about, we were going to fight Abstergo head on as Desmond, stop the Eye-Abstergo launch directly, and collapse Abstergo Industries. We did a little bit of that in AC III but nothing to have to that scale, or having a lasting impact. I think what they alluded to with The Philadelphia Project and Eye-Abstergo could have done some really neat things for the series if they implemented into the future games well. (too late now)
I do give credit to Assassin's Creed II for introducing the Vault, Ezio as a prophet, and the Truth files bit Subject 16. Especially the Truth files, those were all brilliant things to introduce in AC 2 after the first game. It really help cement my interest in the in game universe and I was an immediate fan from that point forward (2009). Sorry for the long comment. Great job on the video again.

  • @abrielrobertsson4160
    @abrielrobertsson4160 2 года назад +2

You are so right about the atmosphere. It was so brutal and to a point, drowning. You could feel the misery, the darkness around the cities. The templar soldiers were scary and you would think twice in attacking them. You could feel the city if it makes sense. Unity was the only game thereafter which achieved this connection of the city with the players. Paris was a mess, people were angry and revolted, and you could feel that.
Altair was also more mysterious. Ezio and every other character that followed, were described in details, but we knew nothing of Altair and he never showed his face. AC1 again was the only game where the modern plotline was more important than the one in the Animus. Another thing is that AC1 is more difficult. It didn't show everything on the map, you had to strategize to achieve objectives, etc. AC2 was great, but different. The game became more commercial and open to casual players.

  • @icarusgaming6269
    @icarusgaming6269 2 года назад +3

In AC1 you are invisible by default, not because of who you're adjacent to, but because nobody knows your identity. Even assassinations are considered undetectable, with only the presence of dead bodies after the fact causing alerts. In later sequence your notoriety is permanently increased, making low profile more important. Even when guards are placed on high alert, as long as you don't get too close to them or do any high profile actions you can move freely, avoiding any social obstacles that may get in your way. If you do need to get close to an alert guard or a dead body, blending acontextually makes you even more invisible - quite the opposite of only blending with scholars, you can blend *even when no civilians are present at all*
You're on the right track, but it looks like you've only experienced two dimensions of AC1's four interlocking combat systems. You've got combos down, and counters close enough, but grounded enemies must be managed differently and fear is completely opaque. Whenever you throw, shove, grab break, or counter an enemy and they fall on their backs, they become immune to combos and the only way to get a finisher is to attack with the hidden blade. AC2 would change this so every weapon type except fists is capable of the same moveset. Sometimes they'll be knocked a good distance away and you'll have to close the space in order to execute them, which I prefer to do by unlocking and jogging over to them, but you can also also do with a quickstep. This is one of the several finishers that activates the fear system. Whenever you get one of those cinematic takedowns, whether through offense, defense, or executions, one enemy in the group will be chosen at random to cower, leaving them vulnerable to assassination. The animations for this area subtle and must be watched carefully. When they all run away that's routing, which is different behavior. One easy way to learn to recognize them is to get down to the last two guys and get a finisher on one, giving the last a 100% chance to be chosen for a cower. Once you figure that out, getting the game to target the right one requires unlocking from combat, so you'll have to get used to constantly switching between the two modes. Enabling the "hold to lock" setting helps a lot with this if your controller is compatible. Give this a try, and if you want to be even more powerful and get those endlessly repeating chain assassinations like Jcers does, ask him about shock and awe

It felt so real, the graphics were better than ac2. I played it for hours just wandering around the beautiful cities. I loved it, even in it's clanky and repetitive gameplay.

    Assassins Creed 2 + Brotherhood.
If we ever get a remake of AC2+Brotherhood, I would love it if Rodrigo Borgia would get a new character model and voice actor…. Both in the form of Jeremy Irons.
This legend will always be Rodrigo Borgia to me.
    Creeds of the Future.
AC1 remains my all time favourite , I am elated to hear of the remake that will accompany this Mirage AC. Followed by AC Origins,2 and Brotherhood. My excitement is palpable , I can't wait to use beautiful moves to cut down my enemies with a Shamshir and single hidden blade. Perhaps we can even get the Byzantine Paramerion sword and perhaps we can ally with the Byzantines , ah the potential for gaming perfection is vast!
I am currently loving Origins and am highly excited for Mirage. I do hope it will be good.
I am also looking forward to be a Shinobi in 1400’s AD Japan .
If you want nuanced ,philosophical conflict I would love to be a Mongol Assassin in 1200’s AD. Where you end up accompanying Ghengis Khans great horde to China and Persia, where they laid waste to the Persians and you assassinate the Shah. Where you can see all the good and freedom the Mongol empire brings...but you also see the brutal violence and devastation brought about by the Mongol horde. Creating the largest empire in history following a charismatic leader whom united his people and provides religious freedom in the entire empire... yet he once entered a village , struck his sword into a doorway and proclaimed :'' Any person whose head is higher than this sword when walking past...will lose it....''
Pharaoh Teti 2323 BC First ever recorded assassination in history.
I love Origins and Egypts vast history, 2228 years before the reign of Cleopatra.
THIS should have been AC Origins.
To be an Aztec assassin in 1450s AD Tenochtitlan would be insane, killing Messo priests that aim to sacrifice humans to the Sun deity and assassinating corrupt Azetc kings ,replacing them with more capable leaders and then to fight against the invading Spanish conquistadors… so many possibilities.
Or Perhaps a Zaputech Assassin 1500s AD, hiding in the cloud forests as you fight against the encroaching forces of the Aztec Empire …then you hear rumours of a new people that made landfall ,far to the east….
Starting out using clubs, Obsidian knives , bolas, obsidian spears and then ending up getting an obsidian club and for range an atl-atl.
AC Babylon where you go up against the guards of Nebuchadnezzar I 1121 BC and help thwart his plans of the construction of the Tower of Babel.
Follow Cyrus II The Great 600BC of the Achaemenid Persian Empire
The Great King, King of Kings, King of Anshan, King of Media, King of Babylon, King of Sumer and Akkad, King of the Four Corners of the World to conquer Messopotamia, Anatolia and the levant.
Abolishing Slavery throughout the Empire , conquering Babylon, and rescuing the Isrealite people and escorting them back to their homeland ,to Jerusalem.
Medieval France where you fight against the Avignon Papacy of the 1260s AD - Treachery perpetrated by the Avignon Popes and the vile king Phillip IV the Fair 1264 AD, that betrayed the Templar order ,forced them to dissolve and brutally tortured and executed them. Thus in a twist, you end up helping the real / original Templar knights to escape torture and execution, to help them relocate, to start a new life (Such as in Portugal) and to help them fight against the new, evil powers in charge, the corrupt Avignon Papacy.
Where we get to revisit the events of ‘’Unities’’ start where legend sir Jack de Molay had cited before the tribunal of God that vile Phillip and the corrupt Pope Clement will be cursed by God Three in One.
This time , we will see his execution in person as an assassin allied to the knights.
One year after he perpetrated his treachery, Phillip IV and Pope Clement V were both struck down by God. Phillip having died in a ‘’Hunting Accident’’....
A few months after Phillips' burial , lightning struck the convent housing his remains and it burnt to the ground.
And finally I need to go back to beautiful Constantinople but During the reign of Emp Justinian 500s AD, working for the Byzantine Emperors to Assassinate their numerous political enemies in Anatolia, the Levant,Mesopotamia and North Africa.

    Assassins Creed 1.
I am elated that Assassins Creed One is getting a graphical remake.(I hope)
They should just work on the graphics and add more medieval arming sword options, I would love to use a beautiful Crusader arming sword as Altair.
I don't care one bit about the story outside of history/the animus, I just want the historical content. My top ACs are Origins,2,Brotherhood and Unity. Revelations setting of Constantinople was superb, but the half arsed npc design ( copy and paste potato face) really placed that game on the back burner for me.
But without a shadow of a doubt my favoutire Assassin's Creed of all time still remains Assassins Creed one.
The setting of the Levant is such a climax in our world's history, the numerous cultures and world views that all convened ,coexisted and cooperated at this crossroads were immense.
Medieval, in cities that are policed by soldiers , guards and police forces , shows exactly why stealth and assassins were a reality/necessity. Those settings are superb.
With iconic cities such as Arce,Demascus and the center of the world Jerusalem , the world in which you find yourself is so rich in history, culture and importance, filled with peoples and packed, lively streets.
In a medieval setting using European arming swords, ME shamsiers , short sword, throwing knives and your iconic hidden blade , makes the close quarters melee combat the best there ever was.
I adored the melee combat in these older AC games, such beautiful, complex, flowing moves that were so elegant and deadly and AC 1 still has the best / most beautiful melee movesets of all the games.
You start with just your hidden blade, then slowly as you develop your skills and rank up you gain access to more and more weapons until you are armed with some of the most elegant and deadly weapons of the middle ages.
You only use a one handed weapon, thus only a single handed or double handed weapon, no Sword+dagger or sword + shield or two sword combo and that is melee perfection to me.
An arming sword in the hand and nothing in the other. In the remake If they added some moves that included damaging the enemy with your hidden blade whilst in a melee duel using your sword, like when you fight janissaries in AC Revelations then it will be pure melee perfection.
In Unity you use a corner to remain out of sight, assassinating an enemy around a corner you kill the target and you neatly place the body against the wall you were hiding against also out of sight. I REALLY hope this will be present in AC 1s remake.
Altair is by far the most intriguing and capable Assassin to me , he is strong, calculating, mysterious and in my opinion the most skilled assassin thus far.
You sit on benches to blend into the crowd, or you join a group of monks in prayer allowing you to vanish from your pursuers.
The way the factions in the game are depicted is good,
Unlike the propaganda of the repulsive woke cult of today , they don’t portray the Christian Crusaders as the villains. Although they did portray the Crusader held territories as cold, bleak, dilapidated and run down where the Muslim areas are vibrant and more appealing which I do not agree with.
Especially the Hospitallar quarters which in reality were some of the cleanest and most clinical areas in the entire Levant since they specialised in surgery and the healing and recuperation of all injured / sickly people , be it wounded crusader knights or Muslim/Christian/Jewish villagers sharing the same cities.
The Crusaders specialised in the construction of wells and water ways / aqueducts that facilitated the flow of fresh , clean water into controlled cities and waste water out of these cities.
(Although I can’t recall if Acre was under siege at the time in game, if that is the case, that could explain the city's dilapidated state.)
But be that as it may, you still fight against the Crusaders as well as the invasive Muslims.
At the end they show that the enemy is not the Templar Knights , but instead the corrupt ,evil leaders on both sides of the conflict.
I love that they correctly show that both factions have evil and corrupt figure heads that you have to assassinate and in turn both factions have good honorable leaders that bring so much good to the world such as King Richard the Lionheart and Saladin.
The toughest enemies to fight are the Great helm wearing Templar Knights and rightly so. These special forces of their time were a force to be reckoned with and even when you use all your combat skill and tricks… you still get a proper run for your money when challenging a Templar Knight to a duel.
I don't want open world, I don't want guns and I loathe MYTHOLOGICAL / MAGICAL shit looking at you AC Viking hype train. Keep it 100% Historical. I loved that AC1 gave tiny hints about God Three in One's existence/presence but that was never the focus.
I want an AC with the depth and realism similar to Red dead Redemption but in a Medieval/Ancient setting.
I can’t stress how much I love AC one and I can;t wait to play it again when the remake comes out.

AC2 has a perfect progression to begin with but with AC1 it's the purest so a remake of the first game would stand out more than the original I think and it has a same place for me but obviously I would prefer AC1 more.

Really interesting take, I jump between AC1 and 2 being my fav in the series so completely open to either side of the argument. The combat in both has its merits and is fun, the vulnerability of AC1 makes it possibly more interesting, although being OP as Ezio makes sense in the second half of AC2 just because he has been doing it for 10 years (the game spans 20 years I believe)
Your points on the modern day stuff are great and it is the biggest change for me, but I am not sure how, with Desmond being liberated from Abstergo, it could have been done differently, especially with the story line and feeling of time pressure till Abstergo find you. Feels almost like a needed sacrifice to progress the story. Being so caught up in Ezio story you can lose sight of the modern day aspects is an especially valid criticism, wish they had jolted you out a bit more to keep that connection but without breaking the flow of Ezios story
The really interesting point for me was the clear good and bad in AC2 to the morally grey of AC1. I have always interpreted this to be Altair is doubting himself and is questioning what he hears from his targets whereas Ezio in AC2 specifically is on a pretty clear cut revenge story line so from his point of view there is no ambiguity, his side is good the other side is bad and that is reflected in the narrative.

You can throw people and finish them off on the ground, you can use strong attacks, you can dodge, you can use combo kills which is basically kill chain from Brotherhood but depending on timing, and most importantly, you can break the guards' defense similar to kick in Brotherhood for an easier finisher.
