The Cynical Monetisation of Assassin's Creed

While the degradation of Assassin's Creed is an oft-discussed topic, one of its leading causes is not, this, of course being monetisation. With the introduction of the Helix Store in Assassin's Creed Unity, MTX (Microtransactions) began to get seriously intrusive. Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla in particular, are games that are warped and made worse by Ubisoft's need to pedal MTX. This is a video (video essay if your parents aren't divorced) about Ubisoft's cynical monetisation.

I'm loving this jaded Walshie era, coming back with some absolute banger videos
Thank you brother. You of all people know just how difficult it is to maintain the "above it all nostalgia blinded ac fan" persona when riveting new content like this year's Sigrblot festival is releasing. It's a hard act to stick to...but comments like this make it all worth it ♥
@@WalshieYT1 are you going to change game theme?
This franchise is becoming death microtransaction hell?
Fantastic video Walshie, glad to have you back. Keep up the great videos and pressure on this increasingly corrupt company. Happy to have you back on the platform.
Dude Sorry , but do you actually think Ubisoft feels pressure cuz of Walshie's Videos 😂 ? Bruh
@@mrmeme2917 no I don’t. By implying pressure I don’t by any means think Ubisoft will care. By pressure I refer to dissuading potential gullible consumers from indulging in the companies malpractice and decreasing consumer care over the years. If some people can save their wallets just a bit then that’s definitely worth it through the video and efforts of it. I stopped purchasing Ubisoft games and even gaming altogether but I still firmly want consumers to know what they are getting into and how it could be better, who knows the video could reach a few of those with an extra comment or like.
@@richard_henry1358 why are you worried about other ppls wallets clowns like you need to mind their own pockets and if I wanna drop money on a game I will because I'm not some broke clown
I swear, and some damn big fandom pages here in Italy are unironically still defending Ubisoft, saying stuff like "uh, people like to shit on Ubisoft becouse that's what everyone does it, becouse it's the current fashion but they don't deserve it" or the evergreen "don't buy it, bruh" regarding MCs, it's so fucking sick that such things come out of admin's mouths, the worst is when twice they discarded the mistrreat of Ubi's devs saying that it has nothing to do with the games' quality or with the pages... as someone who is studying to enter in the videogame business this really sickens me, see how this "fans" prefer to suck on the corporation boot instead of protect the real minds and hands behind the series of which they literally are admin of a rather big community...
I can't say it's much better here, unfortunately. Our culture around corporations is pretty bleak. It sucks to see people deifying and pledging loyalty to mega-corporations who have only created art they liked by coincidence, because it was profitable. These corps have no artistic integrity and would happily churn out poorer products were it the more efficient and more profitable option: it is their fiduciary duty to do so. It's a real shame that consumers can't see this very blatant line in the sand that separates suits and artists. The former will always impede the latter if doing so boasts a bigger number. shit sucks lmao
I appreciate how articulate you are, it's good to have you back. Also I see that heaven or las vegas vinyl in the background king!!
greatest album of all time 🙏
Incredibly well-made video, glad to have you back!
you perfectly summarized the problem with modern ubisoft games in this video, it's not just that their games have microtransactions it's the fact that they're designed around them, I think it's mainly Ubisoft's fault but also the small minority who buys into all this stuff - the flaming armor skins, the time savers, they're ruining it for players who just wanna play the game that they paid for
I'm not even 5 minutes in but i know this is gonna be an absolute banger. Great to have you back!
Incredible video, Walshie. As a former AC fan who now has played Elden Ring for 150 hours, the whole existence of micro transactions and passes in the AC franchise seems so outlandish and horrific in hindsight.
I played Valhalla for 24 hours and was appalled by how boring and bloated it was plus the paid content. I uninstalled it.
It's so sad to see what major publishers and devs like EA and Ubisoft have done to some of our favorite titles. Good on you and others for calling it out.
The only Paid thing in Valhalla is Skins really
Thanks for the comment dude. I don't really play video games that much anymore, but when I do, it's usually Death Stranding or Minecraft, something I can just relax with for a bit, and I always experience that same whiplash. Having a great time with a "one and done" video game made to be a finite experience - like Elden Ring - makes everything else feel obsolete. If I wasn't so invested in Assassin's Creed I doubt I'd look twice at it after seeing the inclusion of an in-game store. Simply too much good stuff out there 🤷♂️
@@mrmeme2917 definitely. But for a game that prides itself on customization and being an RPG where you can make Eivor who you want him/her to be, it's a big deal just how much over the top stuff is behind a paywall. I tried to get back into the series with this game and just couldn't. It's not really even good at being an RPG imo. I get some people like it. I just couldn't.
@@WalshieYT1 and that's it, really. I've been playing ER over the course of a few months now and don't want to pick anything else up. There's only so much time and energy to give, so why give it to something that doesn't deserve it?

Came here from LazerzZ channel. Awesome video, keep it up!
Personally, I'd like for Assassin's Creed to do away with the dialogue options and choosing your gender and just focus on writing good characters and stories like the games before Odyssey. The worst part of this is the game giving you the illusion of choice for what's probably the sake of padding and false replay value only for it to later come out that there is indeed a canon route.
I can agree with this. One of the things that has bugged me is them enabling you to play a character of either sex and give you dialogue options, only to come back later and write a book that establishes the canonical character's sex and actions. So what is the point?
Another thing that bugs me is the fact that characters in the world of the game itself don't react or respond to the sex you play as, even though historically they certainly would have. For example, nobody in Odyssey seems to find it strange that Kassandra is running around on a battle field, even though--from what I've learned in history--Greek women were not even supposed to be seen outside the home, let alone fight. Considering Kassandra's upbringing it makes sense that she won't conform, but nobody in the world comments on it.
@@laurahardy9420Characters reacting differently in Freedom Cry and Black Flag to Adewale and Kenway was a nice touch I wish was kept for the sex thing, in Black Flag Adewale is treated differently by the pirate friends of Kenway(except for James Kidd), and he reacts to some missions where there are slaves and slave ships. And in Freedom Cry there’s enemies specifically there to kill you because your race is different. Oh but don’t mind the woman being the captain of the ship while we go to Athens.
@@laurahardy9420 also it's historical fiction why are there gender and dialogue choices when this has already happened we are just reliving it. I shouldn't be deciding what Eivor did. She already made those decisions.

Finally you are back! Hyped
I remember the syndicate one. I think it's the only game where you can get free helix while roaming. I managed to get a ton by free roaming. Then when I was trying to 100% the game, there was this collectible that does not show on the map unless you buy from the helix store. I didn't want to buy helix because I already have about 80% of helix credits for buying the map. So I grind more helix for days and managed to buy the map from the store without paying a single cent.
its a shitty thing to do but still doable but you cant grind out the price for dawn of ragnarok lol

Welcome to the club. I've been the same distant peaking times to times to see what's up since 2013. It ain' to bad, you substantially lower your expectations and sometimes get good surprises like AC Unity ! I even had some really decent fun with AC Origins even though it felt off story-wise. And who knows, maybe we'll get a new Ghost of Tsushima type game in another setting soon !
Making unity is absurdly easy actually… if you go into the cafe renovations you end up making a stupid amount of money
Youre asking AC fans to actually put work into a game? lol
Thank you for this great video! Well explained! Lets be honest, when Desmonds died, the series died. Because after that, every AC game after had MT from to small to worst. And after Valhalla, im think im done wit AC and Ubisoft games because every game of them has these problems
Desmond is dead by the end of AC3. Do you really think a series that had the admittedly faulty Unity and the damn near perfect Black Flag in its future was dead?
i might be the worst kind of consumer. i didnt notice any of these predatory consumer practices with the helix stores, nor did i feel like i miss out on anything without having bullshit looking outfits or xp boosts
that’s just you knowing not to waste you’re money on stuff, so no ,you actually have common sense
@@C2190 for real, who the fuck cares how do i look in a single player game, all that matters is i wasnt paywalled ever
Oh my god. Firstly, I didn't know black flag had this kind of extra content I always thought unity was the one to hate for this (probably still that is the one). I put 100 hours into valhalla in 1 week when released, (never played since) that must be my most regretted time spent in my whole life. (except the almost this amount of odyssey) With both cases, playing the main stuff in hope for at least something worth watching and hearing, and valhalla almost got it. And I have to admit when it ended I really thought maybe we go back to the important narrative game style, but how blind was I.. as you mentioned there were few very very great key story moments in valhalla (only thanks to Darby) which are not worth the 60€. They are proof always left their to prove that they could've done something interesting, meaningful, powerful game. But they chose money instead. I can't express myself how much I'm sad right now but hey, thanks for the lovely video :D
Give this man a medal @walshie you know your stuff and we all know Ubisoft want to suck us dry of every penny nowadays..
Me doing the main quest, was told or was burdern to do a side quest... 150 hours later returning to the main quest, oh that npc died... was he important? the entire thing sounds sad but i have zero idea what i should be sad about.

i'm glad your back @walshie
The funny thing is that with Valhalla Ubisoft bothers more with adding microtransactions than actually patching up the game and fixing it. I'm sure many people including me still experience certain bugs that were there since the game's launch even after so many freaking patches and updates.
Walshie missed you alot bro
24:17 wow, they've started putting adverts in the middle of the game now!? You're playing the game and then suddenly you're watching an advert? What the heck???
its almost like games have been doing this for years when new content comes out.

I'm quite happy that Ubisoft's Micro-Transactions usually don't fit into the world of AC because it puts me right off buying them because I only like wearing Lore or historical era accurate gear.
He’s baaaaaaaaaack!!!!
Yes, i totallly agree with you. and im going to be watching the AC games on youtube from now on i think, unless there comes something spectacular. AC will always hold a peice of love in my heart growing up with the game, but Ubisoft will not.
Have you seen Skull and Bones too? They made a botchery of what they promised and what will be coming out. its funny how a game 10 years older.... Black flag! will still be better than a modern game they are making. Its like you said, value for money within the game will be no more. Ubisoft has allready done it with Skull and Bones.
(i know its not released yet but they have given loads of information about what they will have in the game and will not)
There is not a doubt in my mind that they wanted to make skull and bones an assassins creed title going back to the Caribbean but actually realized in their brain dead drained head that it wouldn’t have been the best idea so they’re making it a separate IP

The legendary prowler belt would have cost $1,347,301.19 in 2014 (150,000 livres in 1789). In 2022 it costs 1,686,351.73.
The alternative is to pay 10 bucks in modern money because people are somehow too lazy to just play the game.
The slippery slope: microtransaction edition
I wanted to try the Origins DLC since it looked interesting but didn't cause it costed twice as much as the game bought new for 20 dollars
I just buy Ubisoft games secondhand at this point. I'll enjoy their games for however long without giving them money, or adding to their total sales to fuel more selfish decisions.
@18:48 I just got the sword of damocles in odyssey and It looks nothing like that, why would they want you to pay to get a weapon from another game and then make a completely new version of it? Not to mention it looks kind of dumb
if they just ported it over, youd cry about it being lazy, if they change it, you cry about continuity, they literally cant win.

Shut them out completely and focus your attention on games and developers that produce quality content without the corrupt and greedy business practices and if those developers turn into the same thing... rinse and repeat.
What also bothers me lately is how lazy the character writing has been, and more sadly it's been like that at the same time they introduced female characters, it's really a shame it's like they don't even try to make them with a personality or likable, that includes secondary characters. The story all together is just lacking in general

The "if you don't like it don't buy it" argument works if you're talking about the game itself. If you bought the last three AC games or any of their side content within months of their release you’ve contributed to the problem, even if you didn’t engage with the microtransactions you’ve still contributed to the problem. My conscience is clear. I have not financially contributed to the state AC is now because the last time I gave them money was a sale bought Syndicate, in fact everything after AC3 was sale bought.

@@YungSavage203 when they design the game around the content it isn’t optional anymore. You can beat the games jut fine without leveling on Normal or easy. But you need to level because if you don’t you can’t do the story because you fall behind.
This is designs with means they are doing it on purpose. Or every time you start a new game you get an Xp boost. For a few hours so you can get a taste of how fast it is. Sadly, as long as the 10% of gamers who make them 50% of their money continue to make them huge profits, there will be no change in their business model.
