hey capnt.... i got a customer thats wants me to flush all the oils on the trans and diffs... but the front one looks like a pain to flush... any recomendation? i rly dont want to take it off... how would you flush the front diff on a 2002 ranger
I have a 1998 ford ranger sport 2wd and the right rear wheel was hanging up and everytime I would back up I had to give it half throttle then it seemed to let gp with a bang and jerked we replaced the drums and everything seemed to subside but started up again and the emergency brake was hanging up so I released it and again seemed to be fine for awhile well I was in town the other day and stopped to get cigarettes and went to back out and again wouldn't move and finally let go with a bang and a jerk I went to pull forward and again hung up and let go with a bang stopped at a light and went to take off and was banging repeatedly got it home next day went to take the garbage down and went to pull backwards and wouldn't move at all then when I did get it to move a little bit it was 6 loud bangs and it still wouldnt move until I had it under half throttle weny out the next day and moved fine what could be causing this is the axle bad?
Usually this happens because of the pinion nut backing off and losing the bearing preload. The cause of that can be many things, including improper assembly, or excessive driveline vibration due to drive angle changes. The pinion bearings, having lost their preload and proper clearance against the race, will vibrate in the race and wallow it out. With proper bearing preload maintained, and lube maintenance, a rear end can be one of the longest-lasting parts of the truck.
I have an 89 Bronco with an all stock 8.8 in the rear. I'm hearing a "whoom whoom whoom" sound comming from the back. I replaced the inner and out bearings last year. I currently suspect the pinion bearing. When I put it on stands i did not hear the sound and i feel this is due to having no load on the axle. My transfer case is also a big sloppy and the noise could be radiating from that. any thoughts?
Did you figure out the fix for the problem? I have a 96 that makes kind of roaring or whinning noise going down the road, I don't exactly know how to explain the noise, but I will get under it tomorrow and check the play in the pinion
I have a 1982 toyota corolla 2 door five speed stick shift that my dad bought brand new. About a year ago the rear end started whining crazy as it might seem I kinda like the sound but i can't help thinking it will break someday. My mechanic who has fixed everything on the car even the whole ac and heat system which knocked the lining out of my pockets says he can't make the whining stop because of the wear pattern or something he changed the fluid and it still whines and he said he doesn't see the point in replacing it since it still works... any ideas
If pinion bearing preload is lost, it usually results in damage to bearings or bearing races, or the pinion/ring gears themselves. Tightening the pinion nut to increase bearing preload will only accelerate the failure. It could also be a carrier bearing failure, which is unrelated to pinion bearing preload. There's no way to know without a detailed inspection. Often times you cannot inspect the state of carrier or pinion bearings without a complete disassembly. Good luck.
i have the same problem with my car.. the axle is making a sound just like this guy car... the question is, will it be any problem if i continue driving it?? and will the sound end if i tighten the preload bearing??
when i go over bumps there is a deep knocking sound. is this what was wrong with yours? it happens when i go over a bump. i have an 04 ranger. it even happens when i have 300 lbs in the bed.
My jeep commander is making a noise like this, all the noise was on the right side rear passenger so I replaced the wheel hub today. Well with the new hub installed it is still making the noise so I'm guessing this is what it is. Thank You
had a ford van with a howling rear diff. bad pinion bearing and a badly shimmed pinion. teeth on the pinion and the ring gear were miss aligned and just over time ate the teeth up.
please guys help me with my Ford 2002 explorer It's a gas blow back airsoft handgunhaving problem in reverse some time goog some time no reverse and some banging sound when changing from N to D.please please
I also have a similar problem, I kinda hear it only from the rear driver side...and honestly that noise is killing me, I have been everywhere, some people say its the shocks and others say its the bushing and some and someone says its something a missing rubber in the differential, really not making sense and I have an 03 infiniti fx35 and I really don't wanna fix the wrong thing please help
I made a right turn into some curves on the road, suddenly load bang as though a tire blew out, stopped at a gas station inspected and found nothing....drove off again at same 50 mile an hour speed got home noise didnt return...could it be the differential????
Hello sir. I hope you can answer this. I had 4 mechanics come look at my truck and no answer. My truck is not moving. It starts it was shifting fine when driving then I it sounded like thor hit the back of my truck while I was driving and it stopped moving. I had it towed to my house but its been a year sitting there. I can't figure out why its not moving. They all said transmission but I do t believe its that because it was shifting fine until I herd a big bang in the back of my truck. I wish I knew. Its a 1998 ford expedition xlt 4x4 4.6 engine. Is it a bad rear differential why its not moving 🤔 desperately waiting for your answer
I'm not a mechanic. Suggest you have a couple of mechanics look at it and give you opinions and see if they are consistent. Then begin the process of elimination and work through it. Have you considered a problem with the tires? Good luck.
I have a Tire wobble on my Ranger. I put the truck on stands, and began to take the wheel off, then the drum, leaving only the axle and flange to spin. Come to find out, I have a bad axle. It got bent somewhere down the line. I have a few vids showing my progression and narrowing down my tire wobble. The truck would vibrate (for a lack of better words) when driving on the highway, and when apply brakes, would basically cause the truck to shudder. This also caused a problem with the brakes.
So Norm.....I'm having the same problem and noise on my '96 Explorer with 232,000 miles. What was your diagnosis on this and is there a "kit" I need to buy? Thanks
If you can't do it yourself, having a good mechanic replace bearings shouldn't be a major cost. Meanwhile, a complete new or remanufactured axle assembly for a newer vehicle can be in the range of several thousand dollars. Unless the gears are damaged, a bearing swap just requires that the mechanic check gear backlash/pinion depth and adjust if necessary due to bearing size differences. Maybe about a day's worth of work and cost.
My rangers now making a chatter noise when I press the gas but if I push the clutch in it goes away everything is new 600 miles on clutch salve cylinder an transmission it use to make this noise witch the old tranny but now it came back again
wow damage their ring and pinion damage bearing replace seals dust seals any chuncks from the ring or pinion broken off most likely went into the spider gears
@@andrewcarlson5205 thank you for the reply .. awesome i appreciate it im going to change them , was it also having a hard time shifting into gears? thanks once again

James Bannister i have a 2003 ford e250 cargo van i had this helicopter noise coming from the rear side i thought it could be wheel bearings i change the wheel bearings and still i get this helicopter sound coming from the rear side ..only when it goes over 40 km the sound comes ..any suggestion please ????

have a 04 jeep liberty rear right shifts or moves out and in when you step on it and make a noise any ideal
fill plug on the diff looks like it hasnt been touched . Was the gear oil changed at all before the noise?

You could also use long rod soldered to the ole metal oiler and touch the housing until the neoise is loudest
Can you do this on a 4x4 truck ? Suspending the rear to turn wheels?

I think the list could be long on that one, wouldn't want to speculate - maybe a bent rim?

My 87 Camry front hub bearing made this noise!
thanks now i can tell and show my wife it is not the differential save me time and most of all money
How much play is in a new one? None? I belive that there should be a bit, but of course not that much as here.

sounds to me like a bearing inside the diff... pretty sure that pinion race is toast.
Worn pinion bearings. There should be no side to side/up and down play.
big clunking when I push or let off the gas pedal. Can hear and feel it. 2004 Ranger.
That's happening to mine right now. 97 ranger 5spd. Do you know where the noise on yours came from?

bom....
Drain oil and replace with cement let dry a few days problem solved

So what actually caused the problem? Yoke? Low Fuild? Axle bearings? You ended the video without a real conclusion
Typical Ford, seemed that all of their differentials have these darn problems.Damn shame Ford installs shit parts.
