  • Have you been leading a cheese-deprived life because you are lactose intolerant? We’ve got great news for you. Watch our video to find out what cheeses are lactose free.
    Before we start talking about what cheeses are lactose free, let’s take a step back and talk about lactose. Simply, lactose is a carbohydrate (sugar) that occurs naturally in milk. And when I say milk, I mean milk of any animal source.
    So, going back to our milks above. Cow’s milk contains on average 4800mg/100g of lactose whereas sheep’s milk is typically around 4700mg/100g and goat’s milk 4200mg/100g.
    Statistically speaking, people who are lactose intolerant start to show symptoms of discomfort when they consume in excess of 12000mg (12g) of lactose. Therefore, a glass of milk (of any of the 3 sources above) is often within the limits of what their body can handle.
    Without a doubt, the lactose content of cheese varies more based on the maturation period than the milk that it is made from. Let’s have a look at the lactose content in different types of cheese.

    American cheese is the worst cheese to the lactose intolerant. You literally have to look up what type of cheese is in the menu at restaurants. The one that gives you at least 3 natural cheese options will usually have a decent menu.

    I am lactose intolerant. However, I can take the following without any issues:
    Yogurt
    Ricotta (Surprisingly, I have not had intolerance with it)
    Cottage
    Chedder (I've recently found out that I am ok with Chedder).
    I cannot eat pizza mainly because, I think, it has Mozzarella and Parmesan (?).
    Thank you for the chart.

    • @thecheesescientist
      @thecheesescientist  2 года назад +5

      That's really interesting because typically ricotta will have more lactose in it than Mozzarella. It might come down to the amount of cheese that's actually on pizza. Parmesan is pretty much lactose free so shouldn't be a problem.

    I’m lactose intolerant and found that cheese still does cause burping and makes me vomit. My lactose intolerance is 10x over the benchmark, lactase tablets can help but I still get severely bloated and end up in excruciating pain if I have too much. I appreciate the video but feel some people cannot consume lactose even if it’s 1% for myself anything under 0.1% is tolerable

      Casein intolerance falls under the Milk Protein intolerance umbrella and unfortunately is a lot trickier to navigate. Cheeses made by cooking the curd will sometimes have reduced whey and casein levels. Some examples are Gruyère, Parmigiano Reggiano and Manchego

    To be honest, the degree of how much you're intolerant can vary from person to person... when I drink a half to a full glass of milk, it usually makes me uncomfortable and I drink more than that I get sick; I have tried Gouda cheese but I still experience discomfort if I eat too much... so technically there isn't an actual cheese without milk in it?

      I would double-check the ingredients list on the packaging. If it says 100% Cheddar cheese, then it should be effectively lactose-free. The other way to check is to look at the nutrition facts. If the carbohydrate tally says 0 g, then the cheese is lactose free
