- Have you been leading a cheese-deprived life because you are lactose intolerant? We’ve got great news for you. Watch our video to find out what cheeses are lactose free.
Before we start talking about what cheeses are lactose free, let’s take a step back and talk about lactose. Simply, lactose is a carbohydrate (sugar) that occurs naturally in milk. And when I say milk, I mean milk of any animal source.
So, going back to our milks above. Cow’s milk contains on average 4800mg/100g of lactose whereas sheep’s milk is typically around 4700mg/100g and goat’s milk 4200mg/100g.
Statistically speaking, people who are lactose intolerant start to show symptoms of discomfort when they consume in excess of 12000mg (12g) of lactose. Therefore, a glass of milk (of any of the 3 sources above) is often within the limits of what their body can handle.
Without a doubt, the lactose content of cheese varies more based on the maturation period than the milk that it is made from. Let’s have a look at the lactose content in different types of cheese.

What Cheeses Are Lactose Free? (Guide For Lactose Intolerant Cheese Lovers)
Being a lactose intolerant cheese lover myself, I was amazed to find out that so many of my favourite cheeses are lactose free. I would love to hear how you have navigated your intolerance.
as a severe lactose intolerant italian is tough as hell but parmesan and pecorino i can handle. HURRAH...great break down though cheese wanker hahah love the name thats gold.
Fun fact, it's actually around 68% of the world's population that are intolerant. Not a small percentage of humans
This is so informative and helpful, thank you. It is nice to know what cheeses are easier in the lactose content.
Thank you for watching our video and leaving a comment. Being lactose intolerant myself, I can fully relate to how challenging it can be.
I see, yes it can be really tough. Thank you for sharing this support with us
Thank you for this! 🧀💪🏽
You're very welcome. Are you lactose intolerant as well?
@@thecheesescientist Yes lol within the last going on ten years now, I know what I can eat and what I cannot. Some foods I miss though such as cottage cheese, cream cheese and yogurt.
this is great thanks!
Thank you 😊
Thank you for your help
American cheese is the worst cheese to the lactose intolerant. You literally have to look up what type of cheese is in the menu at restaurants. The one that gives you at least 3 natural cheese options will usually have a decent menu.
I pray for healing and health of our body from all allergies and intolerances in Jesus name amen 🙏
I am lactose intolerant. However, I can take the following without any issues:
Yogurt
Ricotta (Surprisingly, I have not had intolerance with it)
Cottage
Chedder (I've recently found out that I am ok with Chedder).
I cannot eat pizza mainly because, I think, it has Mozzarella and Parmesan (?).
Thank you for the chart.
That's really interesting because typically ricotta will have more lactose in it than Mozzarella. It might come down to the amount of cheese that's actually on pizza. Parmesan is pretty much lactose free so shouldn't be a problem.
@@thecheesescientist Thank you. I was able to eat pizza and I love pizza. I don’t have problem if I take the cheese out of Pizza. So something in Pizza that I have issue with.
I’m lactose intolerant and found that cheese still does cause burping and makes me vomit. My lactose intolerance is 10x over the benchmark, lactase tablets can help but I still get severely bloated and end up in excruciating pain if I have too much. I appreciate the video but feel some people cannot consume lactose even if it’s 1% for myself anything under 0.1% is tolerable
Helpful ! I thought feta cheese gave me less problems because it was goats milk. Nope ! Finding out parmesan, and a bit of roquefort are good also makes me want to go shopping.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Parmesan should be a safe bet but just be a bit careful with Roquefort. I'd try a small bit first to see how your gut handles it.
My daughter is Casin intolerant and even with a very low lactose content how can one measure the amount of casin that is present.? The only cheese she consumes is vegan cheeses, which in my opinion are terrible. Great news for the Brie, Camembert, and Stilson lovers,of which I’m one.👍🏻❣️
Casein intolerance falls under the Milk Protein intolerance umbrella and unfortunately is a lot trickier to navigate. Cheeses made by cooking the curd will sometimes have reduced whey and casein levels. Some examples are Gruyère, Parmigiano Reggiano and Manchego
thecheesewanker.com/cheese-science/what-is-milk-protein-intolerance/
Thank you so much for the great information regarding Casein and it’s role in the cheese protein. I will pass this information on for those you also have Casein intolerance and hopefully they might be able to enjoy Parmesan in small amounts.
OMG thanks for info. Friend's child lactose intolerant. I'm making him an Alfredo sauce (almond milk and ghee), over spaghetti squash. Just parmesan cheese opens whole new avenues in cooking for him. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome. Parmesan and Cheddar are two great options that are effectively lactose free. With Cheddar, be sure to choose a variety that's been aged for at least 12 months.
Not lactose intolerant myself but good to know when cooking for others :)
For sure! 😊
Thank you on their behalf
To be honest, the degree of how much you're intolerant can vary from person to person... when I drink a half to a full glass of milk, it usually makes me uncomfortable and I drink more than that I get sick; I have tried Gouda cheese but I still experience discomfort if I eat too much... so technically there isn't an actual cheese without milk in it?
You're spot on. The degree of sensitivity does vary tremendously from one person to another.
What about queso fresco? Thanks for the information.
Thank you for watching our video and leaving a comment. Queso Fresco is similar to Ricotta in lactose content. You can expect an average of 2.8g/100g. Unfortunately, this can be a bit on the high side for someone who is very sensitive to lactose.
What about cottage cheese?
Any hard cheeses are safe for People with lactose Intolerance to eat
Apparently I've been lactose intolerant my whole life but it presents as skin irritation way before digestive issues. I'm so sad but the itching has got to stop.
That's really unfortunate. Have you tried eating hard cheeses like aged Cheddar and Gouda? They're usually very low in lactose. I'm lactose intolerant myself and I'm usually good with those types of cheese.
sounds more like an allergy
Can you please do something like this for paneers...
We'll add it to the pipeline 😊
Nice video but how is over 80% of human adults a small percentage?
I think I've been getting issues from eating a lot of Brie lately, could it be that 1% is too high?
I've had bad reactions to yoghurt in the past.
Some people are more sensitive than others unfortunately. Does it happen even when you have a small amount of soft cheese?
@@thecheesescientist I usually eat a whole wedge, probably 250 grams. But that should only be like 2.5 grams of lactose right?
You said you’ve been “eating a *lot*” the lot part is the problem.
How do you get away with calling yourselves the Cheese Wankers? Lol. Interesting video, thanks.
We play by our own rules! 😂😈
This is the sexiest aussie accent I heard...oh....love it..
Why thank you ☺️
@@thecheesescientist Well I love it.......can't help it,
@@thecheesescientist Would you kindly do a video on Paneer and how to get a lactose free version....please...
What about Halloumi cheese?
With Halloumi, you can expect around 1800mg of lactose per 100 g serving. While it is not lactose free, Halloumi is still much lower in lactose than fresh cheeses like Cottage Cheese and Philadelphia Cream Cheese
Am not lactose intolerant but definitely have something going on, can't eat anything with cheese or I end up having a terrible belly ache lol
There are definitely different extents of lactose sensitivities. And then there's also milk protein intolerance. Are there any of types of food that are giving you similar symptoms?
@@thecheesescientist Didn't knew about these extents, so I probably am!!! I used to love a good mac n cheese or grilled cheese but if I eat anything with that there's a chance I'll be in bathroom forever. Once I ended up vomiting so I don't really know, I'll check up to see if I have actual intolerance to lactose, but it's kinda different, it usually gives me an ache but sometimes I'll end up getting very sick :(
Many people lose their ability to tolerate dairy products as they age. You may not have been lactose intolerant as a child, or even a young adult, but it can develop over time.
does cheddar cheese count with those cheddar cheese slices from the supermarket? E.g cheesdale cheddar slices.
I would double-check the ingredients list on the packaging. If it says 100% Cheddar cheese, then it should be effectively lactose-free. The other way to check is to look at the nutrition facts. If the carbohydrate tally says 0 g, then the cheese is lactose free
ok thanks, the carbohydrate tally says 0.7g is that fine?@@thecheesescientist
@@ricexi1192 that could indicate that it has additional ingredients like milk powder. Even if all of the carb content is lactose, that is still a relatively low amount. Are you lactose intolerant?
Yes I am@@thecheesescientist
I can't handle a glass of milk
Unfortunately some people are more sensitive than others. Have you been able to digest any cheeses?
@@thecheesescientist I've tried parmesan in the past and it was fine. I'm trying to find a block of the stuff to try to make my own pizza but my local supermarkets(sainsburys) only sells pre shredded versions while having every other type of cheese lol
Honestly don't know who is in this world drinking a whole glass of milk
Ive got some blue stilton in the fridge Im scared to eat. Had it for Christmas as its supposedly low in that big balloon belly hose pipe arse stuff so special me can eat it. TBH im scared.
It can be pretty daunting. I'm lactose intolerant too and I'm ok with small amounts of Stilton. I usually wait for a day when I know I'll be at home before trying any new cheeses. Since our bodies are all different, I've found this to be the safer way rather than follow other people's recommendations
umm yeah small amount like 70% of the population lol
While the global percentage is unknown, recent research in the US estimates that 12% of their population may be lactose intolerant.
Wtf is "wind"? Farting?
That's right!
