It is because in your country when they prepare your milk products they remove some of the sugar lactose from the milk before selling it to you it happens also in Zimbabwe. I grew to know this when we went to the industry a lot as a kid during school trips. A very good example of what i am trying to say is like Coca-Cola makes its products specific to what people in a country want.
My thoughts when i heard him say Africa. When in my country Kenya most people get milk direct from the farm and i have never heard of lactose intolerance.
@@crazedzeen i am sure if I remember straight from our school trips to the milk industry the process of removing the sugar starts at the farm. Even fermenting milk for commercial use starts at the farm.

As an Indian I can confirm that 90% of us dont even know what lactose intolerance is 😅 our parents make us drink milk at any cost
Im pretty sure he is referring to East Asians such as Chinese
The statistics here are misleading because there are various degrees of lactose intolerance. Many people who has it never even notice. The lactose just passes through their digestive system and comes out at the bottom without doing any harm. If you're one of them, you won't get the calories from the lactose but you still benefit from all the other goodies in the milk.
@@BUSeixas11 Nah every Chinese and other East Asian person I know drinks milk,
@@aftokratory It is briefly mentioned here and described more in the Nebula-extended video. Basically modern East Asian countries like China really like and even push for more milk consumption, and people are likely training their bodies and maybe even epigenetic factors to process lactose better into adulthood regardless of base genetics.
pretty sure Indians aren't lactose intolerant, since a significant part of their culture revolves around cows.
As an Asian, I've never heard of lactose intolerance growing up nor have I met anyone with it until I met my lactose-intolerant European husband who told me that majority of Asians are lactose intolerant. The irony.

Hes correct, you would more than likely come back positive for a lactose intolerance but have mild symptoms so you dont realise.
You have superior genes. You must help his bloodline lol
As long as I can remember, my dad has been avoiding milk because it gives him stomach pains. Mom never stops trying to get him to have diary in his diet, though, usually by secretly adding milk into bread doughs when cooking. I never understood how silly that ‘remedy’ was until I myself developed lactose intolerance in my late 20s, when all of a sudden I could not enjoy a coffee without suffering severe cramps shortly afterwards. After some trials and (painful) errors, I found a brand that offers true lactose free milk that I could safely have, and recommended it to my parents so that mom would stop pestering dad to try regular milk in small qty and “just ease yourself into it slowly”. No mom, one cannot just ease oneself into regular milk if one suffers from lactose intolerance, the gut will recognise it right away. Better stick to properly treated milk, or go soy / oat / almond…

Remember, lactose intolerance is a gradient
Being intolerant doesn't mean incapable of digesting milk, just that it has side effects (Which are usually *very* minor and unnoticeable)
Kinda like how some people who are allergic to *insert fruit here* only notice it when someone tells them that no, oranges are not supposed to make your tongue tingly

@@jadeasereht4638 Not supposed to, no
Nice textpost reference!
They don't!?
Lactose intolerance is not a gradient, it's caused by failure of the LCT gene(the gene eventually turns off). Your body can't digest lactose when it's turned off, you'd have to eat only fermented lactose or your gut bacteria will digest them with gas as a byproduct.
Asia : 90% lactose intolerant.
Also Asia : we love all types of milk tea!
Me as an asian : lactose intolerance is western made up illogical thing

25yrs ago in India less than 1% people were lactose intolerant but now this number is close to 50%.
Reason being introduced of Foreign and Genetically modified breeds for higher yields price being quality. My mother is also lactose intolerant now but can easily digest Indigenous cow's milk and there are many like here. It might be because of the Genetics as you mentioned as they're newer species for a particular region or because of quality altogether as we call A1 and A2 milk

@@anon21qwerty17 I don't know about US but Indians can relate to this. No one in last 5 generations of my extended family of over 200 people was lactose intolerant but now more than half of newer generations is.

So here’s the thing, the fat content of milk in Asia is different than the ones here in the states, which is why a lot of people had no problems drinking milk in Asian countries, and consumed A LOT of it, but once they move to the states, milk gives them the runs.

I think the definition of lactose intolerant is doing some very heavy lifting for that stat. Growing up in Pakistan I never ever met anyone that had lactose intolerance like people tend to have in the US (e.g. I had a couple gulps of milk and now I'm shitting out my guts).
A majority _might_ have some slight problems with digesting milk though. That kind of thing is hard to notice.
"some slight problems with digesting milk", in other words: lactose intolerance.
Bro,that's just you are denying it.
Yeah I know what you mean. Many assume lactose intolerance involves a violently agonising allergic reaction when really it could just be that you’re a bit gassy and end up being known as the farty one in the family.
"some slight problems with digesting milk" is the literal definition of lactose intolerance. You guys are lactose intolerance, you just don't know.

One thing that isn't talked about in this video: there are degrees of lactose intolerance, and of course different ways people respond to the effects of it. For example, someone could be slightly lactose intolerant, have one cup of milk at breakfast, and not feel a thing, whereas I myself would end up in a hospital if I did that. Not because of an allergy, but because of the stomach pains.
It must be awful. I’m lucky enough to only have stomachaches at times.
True though. If the map he's showing was correct, I would probably be lactose intolerant but over the past 2 decades I've been chugging a lot of milk and the only time I've run into some toilet problems was when I emptied one 1-liter-box of milk in one go.
This is true, I am only slightly lactose intolerant, I didn't even know that until I was 12...
Yes, hubby is african american and lactose intolerant but only to a degree as you mention. He can have pizza and ice cream with no issue but if he were to drink a milkshake, just kill him because he will be on the toilet for hours
I only have stomach pains when i eats a lot and also drink a glass of milk, it's only happened once though, probably because after that i rarely eat much anymore, just a few cups of noodle and call it a day, unhealthy yes, but it's taste decent and somewhat filling

The reason the mutation persisted in the first place is because people consumed milk because it was good, regardless of side effects experienced and the ones with less side effects had an evolutionary advantage. A lot of confused comments here... Lactose intolerance sounds intimidating, but it doesn't mean you have to experience severe diarrhea to be diagnosed. The human body is more resilient than people give it credit for. Same thing with alchohol. Taiwan: literally introduces milk tea
Yeah, don’t know why, but many people just accept that you get a bit of loose bowl after having milk.. lactose intolerance is not common heard. However, the symptoms seem much worse when people travel overseas, like the US. I had a friend, she was so sick that she had to go to the hospital twice when we traveled to the US.. maybe because there are more dairy products in western countries.

I’m white and I had milk all throughout my teenage years but I find now in my 30’s i have to watch it a bit. Ice cream is no problem but a huge bowl of cereal and milk actually gives me discomfort the next day.
Edit: my point is that it isn’t just “yes or no” there’s degrees of tolerance/intolerance
You are white, you don’t really have to worry about it
Same for me …before my 30’s never experienced lactose intolerance…after my 30’s I am getting more and more lactose intolerance
It's very interesting that in the map at 3:38, India is listed as ~60-80% Lactose intolerant, but I never met anyone who said they were. In the South, Milk Tea/Coffee in the morning and evening is like an integral part of life.
Most of Us except those with high Indo European amcestry are lactose intolerant. Phir bhi we can drink milk bas digestion slow hota hai aur gas nikalti hai.
Most people from Asia and Africa in this comment section rarely ever heard of that term yet most of them experience some kind of aftermath after drinking milk, so my bet is that most of these people wouldn't openly say 'hey I'm lactose intolerant' mainly because they aren't familiar with the term despite being lactose intolerant. I have some friends in Japan and Korea and they all love milk-based drinks yet they all admit milk doesn't sit well with them, so I always assumed "lactose intolerance" isn't a common term over there.

Fun fact: when the vikings explored North America, they invited milk to the natives while trading with them. These became sick and, believing they were poisoned, chased the norsemen out of their land.
That doesn't sound very believable. Are you telling me they went on a sea voyage that was weeks long, without any refrigeration, and brought MILK with them? You know, the thing most notorious for spoiling really fast?

@@georgiykireev9678 Dude, they didn't sail from Norway straight to the unknown lands of the west. They had colonies and outpost in Iceland and Greenland, from there they explored coastal North America. They had a short lived settlement in Newfoundland, which they called Vinland. It wasn't for fun, it was because being able to digest milk in the old times meant that you had an extra source of food available in times of need, and thus avoid starvation.
@@WoodlouseChucker well there is cat
If my stomach is badly empty and I havent eaten for days ill get that milk. Its that simple, starvation makes you eat anything. Some even gets poisoned in the process, luckily milk aint poisonous.
Lactose-fre products are widely around meanwhile. So "treated" milk products are no longer a problem for those being lcatose-intolerant. AND: lactase enzyma can also be produced artificially and is available in most drugstore and supermarkets with health products so you can add it into your food resp. eat a dose in a preparative way if needed.
i don't realise i am lactose intolerant not until one day i suddenly came up with a weird thought to quit milk, and things started to change. My skin becomes better and not itchy, I don't have big tummy and belching. Perhaps I am not allergy to lactose, but the milk proteins act as tiny platforms for allergens to attach, resulting in immune response and GI syndromes.

Like he said at the end, despite 90% of Chinese being lactose intolerant they drink so much anyways. Drinking milk probably just makes you guys a little more gassy and poop a little runnier
You “train” to be able to tolerate certain quantities of lactate. So one could be lactose intolerant but because they drink it so much, they’re able to handle 3 cups a day. My friend is a good example of this: he drinks milk daily but as soon as he goes over 1 cup his stomach starts acting up.
Maybe it’s American milk that you aren’t tolerant to and because America basically rules the world with their culture and military values like that are based off of America and as a result, Asia is ranked as lactose intolerant to American milk.
