WOW. Thanks! came across your channel and saw this vid. What are the odds of finding a vid like this, at this time?
Me and my wife had our wedding pictures taken at Castle Duivenvoorde, 16 years ago, and it is nearly our anniversary! Thank you for bringing back those memories. It is a great location to visit (and a fantastic place to have your wedding pics taken).
We've since moved to Canada (for its nature compared to Holland, where all is man made) and will be visiting The Netherlands soon. Your vid might have given us a reason to visit Duivenvoorde again and show it to our kids (who are both born in Rijswijk, near Voorschoten).
And thanks for the awareness! Great cause and very much needed for more awareness!

If you like castles I recommend a visit to Huis Bergh in ‘s-Heerenberg, though it’s not around the corner from Leiden. It’s one of the largest castles in the Netherlands and it’s stunningly beautiful. It’s in “de Achterhoek” a largely rural area in the east of the country with a lot of castles and old farmhouses and somehow not yet discovered by foreign tourists.

The Panbos (Katwijk) is also very near to Leiden, it is a forest, very close to the sea, so the forest changes into dunes. It also has a beautiful little tearoom and you can see (traces) of the Atlantikwall (world war 2) and sometimes you can walk on top of the wall. You can go by bike or bus (but you have to change buses i think)

What a nice one Duivenvoorde. Spread all over the Netherlands you will find about 700 castles ☺️, many of which date back to the Middle Ages . The most beautiful ones ? Kasteel Doorwerth, Kasteel Ammersoyen, Ammerzoden, kasteel Hoensbroek, Kasteel De Haar, Haarzuilens, Kasteel Huis Bergh, 's-Heerenbergh ,Kasteel Westhove, Oostkapelle. Many you can visit , but besides these above been mentioned , there are also very beautiful ones which you cannot visit the castle itself, but you can visit the gardens.

Yesterday Hoensbroek Castle has been voted the most beautiful castle in the Netherlands by the ANWB. The Limburg castle was chosen by a jury from a top five of castles.
The other castles in the top five were: De Haar Castle (Utrecht), Westhove Castle (Zeeland), Doorwerth Castle (Gelderland) and Huis Bergh Castle (Gelderland).
      Authentic
The Limburg castle scores particularly high in the area of 'authenticity'. "The castle was never destroyed by fire or acts of war, so almost everything is authentic. As a result, the outside of the castle reads like a building history book," the jury said. "You can visit all floors of the keep with three meters thick walls."
The jury also praised the way in which the history of Hoensbroek Castle is kept alive for visitors of all ages.

Castles are nice to visit, I would surely recommend Muiderslot, which is in Muiden near Amsterdam for a visit.
But there are also a few castle ruïnes which have a story to tell. Go and visit Valkenburg for a totally different landscape, with manmade caves and a castle ruïne you can visit with still traces of secret passageways into the caves.

    • @TAndTGoDutch

Muiderslot is for sure on our list, but castle ruins are also of interest to us. Thank you for taking the time to suggest those, and for watching!

@@TAndTGoDutch Be sure to put Slot Loevestein on your list. Still a medieval Castle situated where Zuid Holland, Gelderland and Noord Brabant meet, where the Waal and Maas flew together. With a rich history!
Check it's calendar because there are activities that might make a visit more, or less, interesting.
Close by, there is Woudrichem, a star fort town, worthy of a visit as well, and a river ferry between town and castle.
Touristic, but not crowded like the Muiderslot, so enough to do and see.

Weird.. I commented just a hour ago and my comment disappeared! What's happening, U-toob?! Anyhoo, there's a wonderful 18th century house/castle you can actually stay in, which used to be the guesthouse of a nearby monastery, called Kasteel Slangenburg, near Doetinchem. It's lovely, has a great atmosphere (it still follows a bit of a 'Benedictine Rule', so no telly or radio in the rooms, but lots of wonderful eclectic guests to talk to, kind hosts, delicious food (all inclusive), woods and countryside to ramble or cycle in and peace and quiet to relax in. They've got a website. Won't give you a link, though, because U-toob is weird with links. Hope this comment won't disappear into the memoryhole...

So many castles and 'lustoorden' have been demolished in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Netherlands was quite poor then and it was worthwhile to recycle these castles
and lavish houses for their bricks, etc. This is also the reason why there aren't any ruins. Everything got reused.

      TRUE ! In Tilburg existed
a large 14th century castel which was demolished in order to build a large factory in 1860. Can you imagine ?
There are a lot castles left in The Netherlands though and a few really huge ruïnes like the one in Ravesteijn I believe..

There are a couple must-see castles with a lot of historic value like Muiderslot ,kasteel Doornenburg, kasteel Horn and slot Loevestein. Kasteel Hoensbroek may seem nice but like many other castles it is is ruined by 18th century building enlargement and renovation. Nice ruines are slot Teilingen, Kasteelburcht Valkenburg and Brederode. Other typical Dutch castles are Ammersoyen and kasteel Helmond. Kasteel de Haar is a fake fairy castle built on ruines of a real castle. I'm sure you 'll find your goals:).

In my opinion "castles" with walls less than a meter thick, large windows near the ground can't be defended so they are fake:(.

    • @bramharms72
      @bramharms72 2 года назад +1

I personally like my castles tough and high too, but sometimes it's only necessary to have a strong point that can can hold out for a few days and keep your treasures and vulnerable people safe while you're waiting for reinforcements.
These are the Netherlands so you wouldn't be holed up in a valley or on a mountain where no-one would notice. A good signal fire can be seen from 20-30 kilometers off and you can be attacked from the rear while you're still trying to break down the door.
That said, most of these "castles" had some sort of wall, palisade or water obstacle but lost them on orders from various conquerors or due to just being a damn nuisance when times got more eh... civilized (if you can call these times civilized anyway).
T&T, lovely video, it's great seeing you have a good time here.
