I like this method. Just hardboard and plywood ... no fancy hardware. Definitely this is going to be my inspiration.

I"m back 4mo later and idea I have.
Instead of 3/4 plywood for sides ... 2x4 maybe a 2x6 might work even better to attach some sort of hardware to that you can make some dropin dividers .... thus able to make flexible size tray ....
Got a step-son-in-law that's gun ho about doing stuff .... gonna get his help in making this.

Noice! I usually HATE watching RUclips instructional videos.... I'd rather read an Instructable over watching most people's videos but, you sir nailed it. No annoying music, no hour and a half segments where you don't say anything, everything was to the point yet detailed enough for people watching, to grasp the concept or instruction and mimic it at home. Hats off to you sir. I will be subscribing

I actually built this about 2 years ago and it works great!! Just be sure that you allow that felt to set in place first, otherwise it can rub off. The only other thing is, weight is a factor! I have been tinkering with the idea of replacing the felt slide with wheel bearings from Harbor Freight, hoping it will make the slide movement a little easier, but just haven't done it. Great design and I show it off to everyone who has a truck and tell them they need to build one themselves! Great job Jeremy!!

Love the simplicity! May not be as robust as a commercial product, but totally adequate for day-to-day use. The best part is how low it is and does not sacrifice much of the headroom under the tonneau cover. It's a winner.

Made one very similar, but used indoor/outdoor carpet on the top of the drawer. Also took strips of Formica and lined the boards where you put the felt. Everything works like a charm. No pealing and no problem. Slides very easily.

This is so good! I like that you don't lose much height at all for drawer slides or bearings or wheels, the essence of simplicity. It is one BIG step above my current bed slide which is a piece of cardboard that really doesn't slide well at all.

  • @calclearview335

Made one for my Avalanche, couldn't be happier with it, so simple works so well with less than an inch loss of height. Thanks!

I made one similar to this. I put Formica slides from a countertop under mine for the slides and put indoor/outdoor carpeting on the top so nothing would slide around. It works really well.

I found your video while searching for ideas about bed slides. I stole your design and it is excellent. I used a lot more felt in the hopes of improving the slide with a lot of weight on it. I used outdoor carpeting on it to keep things from moving around. I also put tie downs on the tops of the sides to strap down items that might tip over. Works perfectly. Although, with heavy items, it does require some effort to pull out and push back. Still, it is better than a 1500 permanent slide that robs 3" of height in the bed. Thanks for showing me how to make this!

Came across this looking for ideas to put a 6 foot long slide in our rv pass through. Going with 1/2" and glue a piece of hard board to it since the pass is carpeted. Then I'll add some collapsing legs for support... Simplest solutions are always the best IMO ... Great work bud! You did all the hard work for us.

I admire how you've made the complex simple. Glad I found your video. Best DIY video I've seen in a long time.
1 questions-1 suggestion. Have you or anyone, used furniture sliders instead of the felt. I live down a dirt road and even with a tonneau cover, dust gets in. It may be easier to clean the sliders than the felt...just wondering. The suggestion...take some Johnson's Paste Wax in the yellow can, and wax the hardboard/Masonite. I've used it on many hardboard projects and it makes it twice as slick and will help with the moisture issues. Also, try painting the underside and edges of the hardboard with flat exterior paint to seal from moisture. It will still grip the rubber mat but will be more water resistant. Thanks.

For anyone looking to try this. Take from this what you will, but I just built exactly this setup while using a large sheet of suede instead of felt strips. And with about 350lb of tools on the tray there’s no way to make it work.
I don’t think felt would have been any better, but in my opinion, opposing UHMW strips sliding on each other will be the best way to make the manual pull system work with any weight on it without slides.

i recently bought a pick up truck and needed a bed slide to get my equipment that i will use often. wanting to save money and space i tried this version. i just finished it yesterday and while it works its not as easy to use as i had hoped. with about 200lbs on the slide (two road cases about 40lbs each, wheeled cart, clothing bag, back drop stands in soft zipper case and anther small case and it was difficult to slide out. not impossible but not super simple. you really have to use some strength to get it to slide out. and once it hit the tailgate it was like hitting the brakes. so i cut a piece of hardboard and velcroed it to the inside of the tail gate and that helped but still not super easy. pushing it all back in was a job too! over all its a neat idea and if you are not putting much weight then it should be great for you but 200lbs or more and prepare for a work out. by the way i used 3/4 inch plywood due to knowing ahead of time i would be putting heavier equipment in there.
it works for now but most likely will invest in a real bed slide down the road.

I did something similar a couple of years ago, but put 2 inch wheels on it, and made aluminum tracks for the wheels to roll in. Then I glued indoor/outdoor carpet on the whole thing. I load a lot of weight, so I don't know if the slide would move in and out easily without wheels.

Great idea, but I wouldn't put any sides on the 1/2in plywood. One other problem with the Avalanche system is when you fold up the seats for 8 ft the plastic hinge is obstructing and the bed angles up at that point. Sliding the 1/2in sheet back over the plastic will make loading easier.

a guy could nail or screw compartments into it as well, even with lids or a box with other drawers, maybe use a roller dowel ( pin, bolt or dowel with a sealed bearing at the end) in the backside of the shelf so when its fully out the dowel holds it from teetering, holds it down .. in your case a carriage bolt out thru the inner side of your bed liner work great for that, use two nuts to secure a small sealed bearing....easy nuff, maybe need 3/4" on each side for the race.. worth it in case you have something heavy way out on the end but nothing at the back.. hold it down so it wont flip on you . . . :-)
real good idea tho they want a bundle for those roll outs and they take up so much room, most are at least 8" tall? no thanks
