I love mine! I added rubbery drawer liner to the top so it would be non skid and added a thin piece of Luan with rope handles that you can pull out on the bottom to get to things that roll back there.
This is awesome. I want to build one just like it and add two separate sliding drawers underneath to use for tools and parts in each drawer. Great job and also very unselfish of the guy sharing it with everyone.
I don't have a truck, well I do but I don't use it for work, but I just translated this idea into a deep and heavy drawer for under stairs storage. As soon as I saw this video I knew what I was going to do with it. No need to crawl to the back of the space any more. Great idea.
Thanks for passing along such a great idea. I do handy man stuff and my little old truck is usually loaded down with more tools than the trucks worth! It is always a problem for this old man to get to the tools needed as it seems the tool needed most is always the farthest from the tailgate! I have started this project. Cant afford all the fixed casters, so I laminated some 3/4" ply together to make 1 1/2" stock. from that, I've cut out 16, 2 1/8" wheels with a 21/64" hole in the center. Today I'll make the caster brackets. I'll use the same 3/4" plywood. I'll then drill a 5/16" holes for a 3 1/2" bolt with locking nuts to hold the wheels at the point to give me a 3" tall caster. The rest is a piece of cake! Again..... Thanks!!
I got it finished today. Works pretty darn good! I will add some screw eyes on the side rails for securing the tools in place. Again, thanks for the heads up on this great idea!
Excellent drawer. Would like to see a schematic drawing. Does the drawer rock back and forth as the truck slows and accelerates ? I saw on your other video where you used pipe insulation as a bumper.
Have used this method for almost 3 years now. Has worked great, the storage underneath is really helpful also. I suggest using some type of hardwood runner where the casters meed the "bed". A regular 2x4 will become dented kinda like a washboard.
I think I might build something similar for my Volvo 940 estate, I use it for work and as my job covers many aspects of the building trade I have lots of tools! Just need to figure out a way of leaving the spare wheel accessible, so cool though!
Very nice set up, but when someone rear ended my van I learned you need to have a crumple zone 2x4 , meaning you can't have a solid 2x4. Luckily I had a heavy duty 3x4 plywood that was mounted to the frame above me and kept the tools and 2x4s from punching through !!!
I want build this only without taking up any space between wheel wells. Lifting the slide out as high as possible say 12-15" up. That way im not wasting the space uptop and i can still fit plywood studs etc underneath. Also a plywood back going up so Aholes cannot get to any tools by popping the cap door open
I purchased the casters all I need now is the plywood. and 2x4s. etc etc. can anyone show me the way he stops the too slider from coming rite out. I'm assuming the res metal tabs that stick out on the ends to bump upagainst the caster wheels on the top portion????
I built one of these for my truck and it is fantastic. If you are worried about it coming out, you could make a couple of 1 1/2" wide shims about 3/4" tall at the high point and screw them at the far end of the sliding tray on the top. The shim will interfere with the top wheel and won't come out.
After ten years and the guy who posted this didn't reply to ANY of these comments. One thing EVERYONE here neglected to realize was the added weight of this "system". If you are pulling a trailer/camper you are going to want to know this.
Not a fan of casters, roller bearings, etc they’re mechanical, they need maintenance (greasing), they hang up, I use one of several cheaper, no maintenance methods, I’ve did this for more carrying capacity . I built a box carcass & 2 pullout drawers (67”l x10”d x 22”w) to full truck bed length for small parts & tool storage, on top of the box (3/4” ply) as well as slides for the drawers, I mounted drawer glides made of plastic PEX or 1/2” PVC, pre-drilled, screwed into the top with short sheet rock screws in 4 bed length strips ( PEX -5’ or PVC-10’ can be bought at Lowe’s in straight pcs rather than a PEX coil which is standard). I put down 4 strips of PEX, cab to tailgate, pre- drilling in 4 locations spaced evenly, I secured a hold-down ( adjusted to hight ) made of 3/4” ply with 5/8” overhang at a right angle, securing it to the side of the box, next I cut a 3/4” x4x8’ pc of ply trimmed to fit my bed length (short bed ) & waxed its rougher side ( they have a rough & smooth side) WAXING: Using Min wax (qt.) dump out generous quantity, screed to smooth & level, rub in, when 3/4” ply is completely covered buff it out. When dry, turn waxed side down & slide it on the pvc, under the hold downs, (adjust hold down height as needed for final fit, should be 1/8th-1/4” above plywood slide out)# works as good as mechanical cabinet slides. If you load heavy stuff like air compressors, generator, ice chests, ladders, bicycles, folding tables & chairs, etc, it’s ideal cause it saves your knees by pulling it out 3/4 of its length allowing loading & unloading from the ground outside, use a cut & routed hand hole or get a regular folding metal pull. Shalom!
Watch like 10 video until this one. Great build!
5 years on and it’s still a great tip Brad. Thanks. 👍🏻
Finished mine today & love it... I weigh 190 and can sit on it fully extended and it won't tip... Opens with two fingers... Thanks!!!
All the people that gave this a thumbs down work for companies that build these

Always enjoy these ideas of how to utilize truck beds for tool storage. Thanks. :)

I just designed my truck bed on sketchup. It looks just like yours. I reinvented the wheel 9 years later ;)
Cool design! Im starting mine tomorow. Thanks for the idea. Im not a contractor and i dont have 4G to spend on a truck vault.
Slider for the bottom would of been a nice touch.
Fantastic tip!
Wow!!! I'm building this for my dad. Thanks.
Great idea. No limit to its use. Like could use it as a mobile home (bed). Thnak you.
Thank you for the wonderful fact that these ideas

+charginmahlazors
Try 1/8" x 2" flat aluminum plate where the runners hit.
love it!
great design

wise idea,thanks for sharing.
Oh yea...my next project. got a UK spec ford thunder 4 cab, still can't reach the back so this will help...With a few adaptions of course. Thanks guys
Quick
Easy
That’s nice
This. Is. Awesome!

Love this idea cant wait to make one my self
Nice.
i love this, i want to build this. are there plans?
great idea a very worth wild project
iwantosavemoney I think it's more a worth while project

Spend $205.00 @ home D.

Is there another video that shows this in more detail?
+Brad Hays ive yet to see a second video. I have built similar thing by viewing this alone. . I will try n record n show u what I diid to build it,
10 years later, and you can spend $2500 on a 'bed-slide' which achieves the same thing.
What's yer point?
Just came to say that this now costs about $500 to make after lumber and whatnot.
Nah bud, just bought everything, about $225. Harbor freight for the casters.

Why didnt you make a video, instead of describing what nobody will be reading? Just curious…
