- It's really common (and distressing) for patients to shed a lot of hair some 4-6 months after bariatric surgery. Clearly this is not a nice thing, but Dr. Pilcher explains that it can be part of the normal recovery process and talks about our best advice for the return of healthy hair.

OK, best of luck!
Wow thank you 🎉
You’re welcome 😊
Can you do a video on what to look for in vitamins post surgery.
Thanks for the suggestion Laneia - I will take a look at that although honestly our Registered Dietician is MUCH more knowledgeable than me. You might want to check one of her videos here: www.sagebariatric.com/post-operative-classes/
I've had 19 surgeries and only lost hair following bariatric surgery. I also only lost 53 pounds over 1 year.
I’m 18 days post op. I’m so scared for hair loss
Hair loss also occurs with people who use extended fasting to reach autophagy because energy is diverted to more essential organs. It's the bodies way of protecting itself from what it perceives as a food/energy "crisis". It's normal and healthy because in a state if autophagy the body goes after any and all non essential detritis, i.e , damaged/dead cells, visceral fat, etc for energy before going after anything else. You will actually look and feel better.
Thank you for the additional information, and I fully agree.
I am 13 months post op RNY and my hair never grew back
I am over a decade, mine has not come back either - done all the things he recommends for years.
What about body hair? Will it fall out®row? Thank you
I suspect something similar happens with body hair, but I have never had a patient notice or complain about it.
How to deal with chronic neausea and vomiting?
Long term nausea and vomiting are not expected in my experience. Sounds like you should re-connect with your bariatric team.
Can I take Biotin to help with hair growth?
Most programs do recommend Biotin. I suggest for you to coordinate with your own bariatric team.
Already losing mine anyway lol having a bypass on the 19th April.
Best of luck tomorrow!
@@DoctorJP I had to move it forward a week, due to a passport issue. Should be next Monday when I have it . Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.
What about the teeth after the surgery?
I haven't seen any problems with the teeth in my patients, though I have taken over care of some patients with chronic nausea and vomiting who have dental damage.
I haven’t lost my hair . Actually it grow longer..
Nice! Best of luck on the rest of your journey!
Equates the effects of what he does to chemo! WTF!!😨😨
That is not at all what he said .. he is simply saying there are lots of conditions internal or external that can cause hair loss.. hypothyroid is a common disease that is prevalent that causes hair loss .. please listen with a pure heart so you don’t care false witness as to what he said
