Wish someone had told me about this beforehand. I have spent last 9 days wondering if my surgeon even removed my stomach and if I failed my surgery first time I ate. Hope my weight gets to moving soon. 😭
I feel so much restriction! I'm just 4 weeks out. I literally cannot eat more than 2 ounces at a meal. I heard the bougie size used makes a difference. My surgeon used a 36 Fr.
LOL I thought the same thing. Did they just make incisions and left my stomach where it was??? After watching the video, I am re-assured that things are happening for a reason and my body doesn't care what my scale says. It's doing what it needs to do to heal.
Thank you! Finally a male doctor that brings up the menstrual cycle. Most of my weight loss has always fluctuated around my cycle but hardly anyone ever makes the correlation. I trust this guy!!
I've had to listen to this video 3 times in the last week to feel better about the stall. I started stalling right at the 3 week mark and now I'm 4.5 weeks out and still teetering on the same 2 pounds. Trying to be patient! Thank You Dr. Pilcher for this reassurance :)

I’m in the same spot you were a year ago now but I do notice that even tho the numbers on the scale aren’t moving much, I do seem to fit into some of my clothes differently so I count these times as “Non scale victories”. They happen a lot more than we realize because we’re so used to wanting that number on the scale to move and we don’t even realize theirs other ways to see a difference!!

I loved this entire video from beginning to end. You explained so much that I was confused about. I thought I stalled at 3 weeks because I started eating puréed foods and my body was just holding onto the food for dear life. And I was confused as to why the scale says since post op I’ve lost weight but all my clothes still seem to fit the same. This explained everything! Truly thank you so much doctor!!!

So happy I found this. I lost 12 lbs in the first 3 weeks. I've been the same for the past 2 weeks. I was losing my mind. Walking 2 times a day. Writing down everything I eat. Just going crazy. Thank you Dr. Pilcher.
Thank you so much for this video. I was losing my mind wondering what is going on. I contacted a member of my surgical team, only for him to tell me that I need to workout more. Bear in mind that I was already working out at least 20 minutes (cycling) a day or 2 hours at most (cycling, walking, dancing). And this man still said it wasn't enough and I needed to run. Totally downplayed my efforts. I was so hurt and furious. Thank God I didn't listen to him and just decided to just keep doing what I was doing. This video explains things better and calmed my fears.
I first watched this video before my bariatric surgery. After my bariatric surgery, I have continuously returned to this video for a perspective check and self-education. Everything shared is on point -- including the fairy mother weight versus the "ideal weight". Thank you for making these videos. You can't put a price on the amount of time and research you provide to us as a doctor with extensive experience about the post-bariatric experience. Best,
Thanks so much Dr! I'm 3 days into my 3rd week and I've lost 21lbs since my surgery on the 9th. I was so depressed and disappointed in myself because I thought I was doing something wrong. My starting weight was 289lbs. Prayerfully, it'll start dropping again soon!
Hey there! I know it’s been a year but I’m exactly where you were right now. My starting weight, before 2 week the pre op liquid diet was 322. I got down to 312 the day of my surgery. I’m now at 288 . I haven’t lost any weight in the last week and thankfully this video gave me some hope. My question to you is.. the 91lbs you lost so far, are you counting the pre op weight you lost or just the weight since you had the surgery? Thanks and good luck on the rest of your journey!!
I know this was posted a while ago, but this has been so helpful! I have gastric sleeve surgery scheduled in 8 days and I want to be as mentally prepared as possible. This was very informative!
Hello Dr. Pilcher you are such a Blessing. I just had my Gastric Bypass on 10/26/22 and it is at the 3 weeks stall. On the day of my surgery I was at 256 and my 2 week post-opt visit I weigh in at 236 right at 20 pounds loss. This week I haven’t loss anything. I’m just at a stall. I’m so glad that I came across this video because you have explained each stages that I should be ready for if it come to pass. I truly believe that I have a great Bariatric Team to work with. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you for being there for someone like me learning on how to take care my new stomach and to live a healthier lifestyle on my new journey. Thanks you for All that you do.
this is excellent! i am just coming out of the three week stall and this helps affirm the plan going forward. Too often we read the fairy tale part of the story and skip over the part where she lost the slipper. This helps keep the mindset strong. Thank you so much.
I’m currently at my 3 wk stall and have been extremely frustrated. According to my doctors my numbers are great but I was a bit concerned until I watched your video. Thank you doc, I really needed to hear this. (Big sigh of relief) 😌😌😁
I’m having the mini bypass on October 1, which is not long now and I’m feeling excited and can’t wait. My husband and daughter aren’t happy about me getting it done as 5 years ago I had the sleeve done but my weight came back but now my knees and ankle are killing me due to injuries I’ve had over the years. I’m doing this surgery for me and hopefully my family will except this. Right now my ankle is giving me a lot of grief and I’m walking in a moon boot and I can’t do without it because of my injury. So once I have this surgery I’m hoping that with the weight loss my knees and my ankles won’t be suffering anymore. I’m struggling to exercise because of my injuries. I’m looking forward to it! These videos have helped me a lot and I want to thank you Dr❤
Im being set up for a revision of my 1995 vertical banded gastroplasty, to a Roux en Y bypass. You have taught me more than i ever learned the first time around. Thank you.
You are a gift from Gd and a true MENSCH! Thank you for all of this! Every video is GOLD and you speak to patients with such compassion and clarity. I’d like to mention that measuring is so very helpful when you are on this journey because patients can lose inches and not just “weight”, so be sure to take your measurements frequently, as well. And, thank you for stating you are not a fan of artificial sweeteners. Big love to you, Doc!
This was so helpful. I’m almost 3 weeks post op gastric sleeve and I love about 12 pounds the first 2 weeks and haven’t lost anything in a week now. I’ve saved this to remind myself that the surgery did work but I’m still recovering and my body is catching up. Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I am 3 weeks post op from my sleeve over here in the U.K. Mr Simon Dexter was my chosen surgeon and I am having a good recovery so far. The last 3 days I’ve maintained my weight though and re watching this video is so helpful and reminds me that it is normal. And that I’m going to step away from the scales for a while!😬🇬🇧
Hello Chrissy, losing 13 pounds in 2-3 weeks could well be a good start if your pre-op weight was less than about 230 pounds (people who start lighter don't lose as many total pounds, but they tend to end up at a lower weight than people who start over 300 pounds). If you began in the upper 200's or higher, then I recommend for you please to talk with your bariatric team about this concern at your next visit.
@@conradbarrett6 by October 2021 I got down to 197 from 300 (surgery weight) before I found out that I was pregnant… I am 7 months pregnant and gained 43lbs. The crazy thing is, I don’t look like it so 🤷🏽♀️
3 week stall patient here…Ty so much I’ve been kind of obsessing with the scale and been really weak, I’m eating puréed foods so that’s been great but at an awkward phase in the process. Thanks so much doctor.
Thank you so much for explaining this! I’ve literally been at the 3-week stall for 3 weeks! Now I get it. Im not failing - it’s just natural for my body post surgery now that im at 6 weeks post op! This explained so much!
@@JustJaynE7Hey do you have an update on this to calm my nerves? I’ve been at the same weight for three weeks now and I’m like 4 weeks post op. I literally lost 21 lbs in a week and a half after my operation and then got really sick but the scale hasn’t moved.
YES!!!!! I started stage three soft foods and the third week stall all at the same time I was like how I'm following everything the doctor said etc. Weighed myself this morning and lost a few pounds lol. Just have to remind myself it's a healing process and adjustments
I am so glad I found your video. I'm at 6 months and I noticed I get hungry more often. I also have platued. I've been the same a couple weeks now. I had my surgery Sept 7th I lost 15 1bs on the Liver shrink diet and I lost 74 lbs after surgery. Thank you for helping me see what I need to do.
Thank you 🙏 Totally needed to hear this stayed the same for week 5 and 6 post op. Doing all the right things and thought maybe Inam doing it wrong as not really given a lot of information from hospital and don’t see them again for another 3 months. So This is so timely. I will continue as I am and hope it settles and starts moving in the next week or so.
Yes, I bet that weight will come down again soon, and I bet you're noticing that your shape is shrinking in the meantime. Best of luck on your journey!
Thank you so much doctor, I was feeling so stressed. I’m in that 3 weeks that the scale is stuck, was even thinking that it had not worked for me. And I’m following the diet and exercising. Thank god it seems actually normal 🙏🏻
I had gastric bypass (RNY) conversion from VBG on July 28th (2022) so I’m at that stall point & have been for the past week. Frustrated is an understatement. I’ve been decreasing my calories & still taking in my vitamins & protein & water & fluids. Still not budging with my weight. Seriously this has helped me a lot. Although I have had others tell me in a bariatric support group I’m in on FB that it happens to most people I guess it didn’t really sink in that this is normal until I heard it explained. I now have some hope. Thanks so very much.
Had my VSG 12 days ago & I lost 11kg (24 pounds)..the truth is Dr John vids gave me so much information than my surgeon in Kuala Lumpur.. thank god I stumbled into it & I'm feeling really optimistic for my weight loss journey.. God Bless you Dr John..
This is such a helpful, informative video. I am 4 weeks post-op vsg, and I've lost 29 lbs since my surgery. My restriction is very tight. I can only eat 2 ounces per meal. More than that, and I vomit. Sorry, I know that's gross. Anyway, I was worried about not getting in all the food I should, but you've made me feel better with your explanations.
Thank you so much for this video! You are truly appreciated. I will start weighing myself every Friday instead of every day. I cant wait to get out of this 3 week stall.
Had my gastric sleeve surgery at the end of April 2023. Fast weight loss for 2+ months. For the past 3 weeks or so, weight loss has stalled. It was very disconcerting at first until I remembered that i've really increased my activity with weights and cardio. So, I'm building lean muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. I can also see in the mirror that I have less fat. I also increased my protein and water intake. Thanks for your information and encouragement!
I have saved this video - it is going to be a "go-to" for me through this journey. What you explained about the abrupt stop after surgery is something I would never have known. I would have just though that the surgery did not go well. Thank you for all this good information.
Hello. I’m 3 weeks post op and haven’t lost any single thing. I was just wondering since after your message have you lost anything yet??? It’s sad and scary for me .
Omg this doc is legit! Wish I would have found him to do my surgery. Thanks doc for this information. I never had a three week stall but I did have a three month stall. This explains things so well
I had my sleeve done on June 16th at Sage and lost 15 pounds at my one week check up. Since then I haven't lost much else. I've become very discouraged, but I feel a little better after watching this video. I have a lot of trouble staying hydrated, but I did before the surgery also.
How are you doing now? I also lost 13.5 lbs 1 week after getting the sleeve. Then I stalled now for about 3 weeks. It’s so annoying. I thought I was on pace to lose at least 20 lbs in the first month but now I don’t see that happening. The 13.5 lbs isn’t even noticeable to me aside from the scale and my shirts being slightly lose. I went from 241 to 228 and now nothing
How are you doing? I had my surgery 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I started at a lower weight 224 and I’m down to 196, I feel like I’m in a stall which I knew before hand could happen. I’m trying to make sure I stay hydrated. I trust the process and know that I’m doing everything that I’m supposed to. Best of luck.
@lindseyburchrealtor I just continued with my plan, largely on a daily basis, 60 grams of protein, 64+ oz water, raw vegetables and fruit. Eventually, I would all of a sudden drop 5 pounds, and realized this was going to be the normal way for me. I'm down 110 pounds now and I only weigh myself once a month or so. The best thing that helped, though, was changing my mindset and telling my body that I loved it, that the excess could go now because I am safe. 🥰😍
Thank you very much for a very informative video. I have done alot of research before surgery but your video is the only one that has given me confidence about how to handle the changes. Thank you for being so clear and straight to the point.
This was so helpful. I really appreciate this information being posted. I lost 34 lbs my first week and I have been sitting there for the past 2 weeks. I'm only 3 weeks post-op, so I can't complain. But I'm gonna keep on pushing. I'm confident that things will pick back up once my body adjusts. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much, Dr. Pilcher for your straightforward, informative and heartfelt presentations. These videos have been invaluable in my understanding of my surgery and what to expect moving forward.
Omg thank you so much for this video it is a life saver I had the sleeve in 2019 regained 40 lbs of the 90lbs I lost I just got revised to the gastric bypass 6 days ago and I wish I had these tips before in 2019
I’m literally 3 weeks post op and this is what I’ve been experiencing . Just trying to stay away from scale as much to keep positive. 30lbs lost since pre opp so still a huge Win 😊
Tremendously helpful! Gives me a template for this next year. It had never occurred to me to make journaling a regular practice around the 6 month mark
Thanks for watching, and my compliments on staying actively engaged at this medium timeframe after your surgery. Best of luck on your long-term journey
Honestly love this surgeon. He is very informative and reassuring. My surgeon and the PA are an immense disappointment. They aren't "available" and the surgeon spends as little time as he can. I receive more support from the dietician. I wish I had chosen a differnt surgeon. Once I head into maintenance, I plan to switch to a weight management physician. I have also decided if any post surgical complications arise, I will switch to another surgeon for a 2nd opinion.
Amazing information exactly as it happened in my case..I was wondering what was happening to me...now I understand. Thanks for the information Doctor 👍🏾
Thank you so much I was so worried am 3 weeks in and am stalled I was wondering what’s going on why am stuck this video is very detailing and helpful Thank you so much I appreciate it a lot 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💪💪💪💪
Pictures have helped me greatly I look in the mirror and look the same to myself I even keep buying clothes that are too big for me now. But seeing the past me and the present me side by side really gets me surprised
So glad that I found this. I’ve been beating myself up. Miserable, between the trying ti drink water. Protein and the constipation. I’m 3 weeks out and can’t wait to feel better.
This is exactly what happening with me as I lost 6 KG during my first week post op then it has been stalled at the same weight for about 2 weeks now with the weight fluctuated a lil bit at 0.5-1 KG up and down depending on the day. It is very discouraging but I can only trust the process and my body that it needs time to heal. I am also feeling extremely tired for these past 3 weeks and at the end of the day I feel so drowsy that I need to go to bed early everyday. I hope this lacking of energy state will go away very soon as it affects how I perform at work also.
I had my surgery on November 30th 2021 and today is 01-12-2022,I weight 193, I was 230 so that's like 37 pounds but now I'm at a type of stall deal, this was very helpful because I was tripping out real bad getting on the scale everyday so,thank you for this video,I'm trying to work on my meal plan now🤓
At first I was scared for you seeing 2021 to 2022 .. the. I realized it was only a few months from when you got it lol . It takes time. That’s why so many of us are watching this I guess
Im here!!!! hahahaha this is where im at right now!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! tomorrow is my 4th week post op! Been at 260/261 for the past week... Coming from 302 preop.
Thank you for your input about not weighing every day. I weigh myself once a week now on Saturday. Sometimes I'm tempted to weigh on Sunday too,but I try to not do it and just except my weight for that day. Thank you again!
Makes perfect sense. I noticed while I was losing a lot of weight that I could smell and taste the ketosis on my breath. Currently my weight loss is at this stall point and I can no longer taste or smell it. I also noticed that my skin looks and feels more hydrated and overall I'm feeling better.
Thank you so ooo much for all the information that you post. It has not only prepared me for surgery but has been a tremendous help in my first three weeks post gastric bypass surgery. I lost 10lb my first week and only 2lb my second week, I'm disappointed but trying to stay positive.
@@sbo3 Hello, I'm not too bad thank you. The awful smell of meat has now disappeared thank goodness and I'm able to eat a wider range of foods. It's been 14 weeks since my op and I've lost 3st 6lb so far 😁. Hope you're well.
I had gastric bypass on 5/19/21 exactly a year ago today . I gain 5 pounds and I’m so disappointed with myself. I started at 205 and my current weigh is 146.6 pounds. I’m going to start a liquid diet hopefully it helps me get back on track. I started craving sweets and I’m always hungry.
Yes that's pretty distressing Martha! I want to let you know that in the time from 1 year to 2 years after your surgery it's really common to gain 10-15 pounds. Even though this can be distressing/disappointing, it still fits with long term health as long as it is not the beginning of a lifetime trend. On the other hand, I think it may be a serious concern that you are craving sweets. This implies to me that something in your metabolism is out of balance. I strongly recommend for you to visit back with your bariatric team sometime soon.
Wish someone had told me about this beforehand. I have spent last 9 days wondering if my surgeon even removed my stomach and if I failed my surgery first time I ate. Hope my weight gets to moving soon. 😭

@@JustJaynE7 update?
I know this was posted a while ago, but this has been so helpful! I have gastric sleeve surgery scheduled in 8 days and I want to be as mentally prepared as possible. This was very informative!
So glad this was useful! Best of luck on your journey!
So glad this is helpful! Best of luck on your journey!
Thank God, advice from a medical professional! Thank you so much and keep these videos coming!
Thanks for watching! Best of luck on your journey!
this is excellent! i am just coming out of the three week stall and this helps affirm the plan going forward. Too often we read the fairy tale part of the story and skip over the part where she lost the slipper. This helps keep the mindset strong. Thank you so much.
Very glad you're thinking for the long term. Best of luck on your journey!
I’m currently at my 3 wk stall and have been extremely frustrated. According to my doctors my numbers are great but I was a bit concerned until I watched your video. Thank you doc, I really needed to hear this. (Big sigh of relief) 😌😌😁
Yes! Can be an anxious time! Best of luck on your journey!
Best of luck on your journey!
Im being set up for a revision of my 1995 vertical banded gastroplasty, to a Roux en Y bypass. You have taught me more than i ever learned the first time around. Thank you.
OK! Best of luck going forward!
Thanks for watching, and best of luck on your journey!
This was so helpful. I’m almost 3 weeks post op gastric sleeve and I love about 12 pounds the first 2 weeks and haven’t lost anything in a week now. I’ve saved this to remind myself that the surgery did work but I’m still recovering and my body is catching up. Thank you!
Glad this was helpful, and best of luck on your journey!
And that I’m going to step away from the scales for a while!😬🇬🇧
So glad this was helpful! In the long run, I think it is useful to track your weight, but typically once a week is more useful than daily.
I just started week 3 I haven’t had a rapid weight loss phase yet. So far I’ve loss 13 lbs since surgery.
How are you doin now Chrissy?
@@conradbarrett6 by October 2021 I got down to 197 from 300 (surgery weight) before I found out that I was pregnant… I am 7 months pregnant and gained 43lbs. The crazy thing is, I don’t look like it so 🤷🏽♀️
OMG what a clarity! Much appreciated doc to help me understand the 3 weeks stall which I was worried about.
So glad this was helpful, and best of luck on your journey!
These videos are the best information that I've seen anywhere regarding bariatric surgery.

3 week stall patient here…Ty so much I’ve been kind of obsessing with the scale and been really weak, I’m eating puréed foods so that’s been great but at an awkward phase in the process. Thanks so much doctor.
So glad this was useful. Best of luck going forward!
Thank you so much for explaining this! I’ve literally been at the 3-week stall for 3 weeks! Now I get it. Im not failing - it’s just natural for my body post surgery now that im at 6 weeks post op! This explained so much!
Absolutely, and best of luck on your journey!
How long can the stall last? I’m at the stall right now and I’m almost 4weeks post op. I’ve lost 2 lbs in 2 weeks and it’s driving me insane!!
@@JustJaynE7Hey do you have an update on this to calm my nerves? I’ve been at the same weight for three weeks now and I’m like 4 weeks post op. I literally lost 21 lbs in a week and a half after my operation and then got really sick but the scale hasn’t moved.
Thank you. I was just thinking about the stall. This is my 4th week since my surgery. Now , I understand.
Best of luck going forward!
23 days out post op VSG surgery and I’m experiencing the stall. Drinking more water, eat 2-4oz per meal. This video was very helpful 😊
So glad it was helpful - best of luck on your journey!
YES!!!!! I started stage three soft foods and the third week stall all at the same time I was like how I'm following everything the doctor said etc. Weighed myself this morning and lost a few pounds lol. Just have to remind myself it's a healing process and adjustments
Thanks for watching, and best of luck on your journey!
Thanks for watching, and best of luck on your journey!
I needed this video so much. I've lost 3 lbs in 3-4 weeks. I was crying. I needed to hear this
So glad this was helpful, and best of luck with the rest of your journey!
Thank you 🙏 Totally needed to hear this stayed the same for week 5 and 6 post op. Doing all the right things and thought maybe Inam doing it wrong as not really given a lot of information from hospital and don’t see them again for another 3 months. So
This is so timely.
Sure thing. Best of luck on your journey!
Best of luck on your journey!
So glad this was helpful - best of luck on your journey!
Glad this was helpful!
Sounds good - best of luck on your journey!
Hey, thank you so much for this video, this is a great service for the post surgery community!
So glad it was useful. Best of luck on your journey!
I have saved this video - it is going to be a "go-to" for me through this journey. What you explained about the abrupt stop after surgery is something I would never have known. I would have just though that the surgery did not go well. Thank you for all this good information.
So glad this was useful, and best of luck on your journey!
So glad I came across this video I'm 2 1/2 week post op and have not lost no weight since surgery 😮😮😮
Glad this was helpful. Best of luck on your journey!
This explains things so well
So glad it was helpful!
I had my sleeve done on June 16th at Sage and lost 15 pounds at my one week check up. Since then I haven't lost much else. I've become very discouraged, but I feel a little better after watching this video. I have a lot of trouble staying hydrated, but I did before the surgery also.
So glad this was helpful, and best of luck on your journey!
Hi I had my surgery June 16 of this year.
I'm having surgery tommorow and watching this was extremely helpful and great
Best of luck!!
I stalled at 1 month, and have been the same for about 3 weeks now. 😢 Great info here, thank you. I was so frustrated and sad.
You got this! Best of luck on your journey!
What did you eat or introduce during this time of the stall?
@@DoctorJP 🥰
@lindseyburchrealtor I just continued with my plan, largely on a daily basis, 60 grams of protein, 64+ oz water, raw vegetables and fruit. Eventually, I would all of a sudden drop 5 pounds, and realized this was going to be the normal way for me. I'm down 110 pounds now and I only weigh myself once a month or so. The best thing that helped, though, was changing my mindset and telling my body that I loved it, that the excess could go now because I am safe. 🥰😍
@@MichelleIbarraMHAEdD awww I love that so much
Thank you very much for a very informative video. I have done alot of research before surgery but your video is the only one that has given me confidence about how to handle the changes. Thank you for being so clear and straight to the point.

Thanks so much for this info. I am experiencing the stall now and I'm one month out. ❤️❤️
That sounds about right. Hang in there!
Thank you so much for this video. Literally avoided a nervous break down 😅🙏🏼♥️

Agree, you are destined to lose a LOT more weight. Best of luck on your journey!

Omg thank you so much for this video it is a life saver I had the sleeve in 2019 regained 40 lbs of the 90lbs I lost I just got revised to the gastric bypass 6 days ago and I wish I had these tips before in 2019

Best video yet. I love the science in it. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the feedback!
I'm glad this information is helpful for you, and I wish you the best on your journey!
This was very helpful. I’m 4 weeks post op and I’ve been stalled for a few days.

Your struggles sound pretty typical Unity, so I hope they pass soon!
I noticed when I felt tired soup with some salt helped me a lot
How
How are you doing now unity ??
I had my surgery on November 30th 2021 and today is 01-12-2022,I weight 193, I was 230 so that's like 37 pounds but now I'm at a type of stall deal, this was very helpful because I was tripping out real bad getting on the scale everyday so,thank you for this video,I'm trying to work on my meal plan now🤓

Thank you so ooo much for all the information that you post. It has not only prepared me for surgery but has been a tremendous help in my first three weeks post gastric bypass surgery. I lost 10lb my first week and only 2lb my second week, I'm disappointed but trying to stay positive.

How are you getting on, Nicola?
I ❤ sage bariatric best explanation and caring for patients im on my stall but i know im healthier that more important
Thanks for watching, and I'm confident that weight will come down for you!
