  • In this final episode of her current visit to Hinchingbrooke House, I am joined by Tom Wheeley, one of the history teachers at Hinchingbrooke School. Together we delve into the past of this fascinating building - from its time as a medieval nunnery to being the ancestral seat of the Earls of Sandwich and for the past 50 years as Hinchingbrooke School.
But the upkeep of such an historic building is a constant challenge. With the current lead roof reaching the end of it’s 100 year life-span it will soon need replacing. So The Friends of Hinchingbrooke have launched an appeal to help fund this vital work to preserve Hinchingbrooke House for future generations.

Julie an old naval tradition was when a wooden ship was scraped the main deck was cut up and to each person who served on the ship a gifted trophy of a piece of the deck was sent. In the case of Hinchingbrooke a trophy mounted piece of an old shingle from the old roof

This Process is called "Planking," &. it is still carried out today.😊
A Section of the Decommissioned Submarine or Ship,
Is Each given a Number, then Engraved into the Section of Plank - usually from the Hull of a Submarine or Ship,
&. Given to the Person who has Donated, or Bid for a certain "Plank Number."‼️

Fascinating. This tradition reminds me of the story behind the Resolute Desk, the official desk of the US president in the White House. The desk was constructed from salvaged decks and timber from HMS Resolute, a Royal Navy ship. HMS Resolute was exploring and studying the Artic in the 1850s when it was trapped in an ice flow and nearly crushed. An American whaling ship saved the British sailors. Queen Victoria, in gratitude, had a desk made from the salvaged timbers of HMS Resolute and sent it over as a gift to POTUS. The Resolute Desk still sits in the Oval Office today.

Julie, not to take anything away from John and Kate, but I did so enjoy this segment. As a fervid watcher of Time Team I love the fact that they had the old maps of the nunnery and were able to find out so much about the house. And uncovering bits of Norman architecture was wonderful. It is sad that they stable blocks were torn down but understandable. We see the damage to the stables at Mapperton. A 1,000 years is a very long time for continuous occupation. It was great to see that clip of Rosemary again walking thru the Hitchingbrooke gardens and have Julie and Tom be on the same spot. Julie, not sure of protocol but when you're dissertation is done and submitted I hope you'll be able to share it with us.

My theory that Cromwell's dissolution of these Catholic buildings was largely fed by his personal greed is only reinforced by the history of Hinckingbrooke. I’m pausing midway through so it may have been cleared up. The first Cromwell to take possession after the nunnery was dissolved was Richard Cromwell, a nephew of Thomas Cromwell, not Oliver Cromwell. Oliver was the great grandson of Richard. I don’t mean to nitpick. I’m fascinated with Tudor era and knew Thomas Cromwell was the driving force behind the Reformation and dissolution of the monasteries and nunneries. Nevertheless, these videos are amazing and I’m happy that much has been preserved and rediscovered. But in the long run it was a home longer than it was a nunnery I suppose. And as Luke’s father said in the previous episode life goes on. Or something along those lines.
