  • This time on American Viscountess, I visit a hidden gem of a country house in Shropshire, close to the border with Wales. Pitchford Hall is considered England’s finest Elizabethan half-timbered house. The recent history of the Hall is a turbulent one - in 1992 it was sold and lost to the family who lived here. But by extraordinary determination and endeavour over 25 years they have returned to Pitchford. With her husband James, Rowena Colthurst, whose mother inherited Pitchford in the early 1970s, has worked tirelessly to get the family home back - but now, they’re faced with the enormous task of recovering the building from years of neglect. We got part of our family property back just over 100 years since it was sold by my great great grandfathers trustees. Once news circulated what happened people were leaving photos of the original house in our mailbox along with congratulations .

I can relate on a level. A couple of years ago I found out that the house my Dad's Dad's Dad's Dad's Dad's Dad's Dad's Dad built in 1682 was for sale. The house was located in New England. I found it on line on a well known real estate listing website. But alas it was beyond my resources. I was hoping at least a relative would buy it and sent emails to all my cousins who were descended from the same ancestor, or the ones I could find but none were the slightest bit interested. The asking price was $750,000 and just by the photos my estimate was it would require half a million to restore it to museum quality or $200k to renovate it to livable status. I'd have preferred the former. So the house sold for $679,000. Had I the resources I'd have paid twice that just to get it back in the family under the same name. Sadly, the buyer wanted the 9 acres and the only penalty for tearing down a historic house in that jurisdiction was a $500 fine and that was for not getting a special permit to make wholesale changes to a structure on the historic home list. They deconstructed the house which was roughly 2200 square feet and 2 1/2 stories high. They sold off all the timbers, pieces of fire place,. floor boards and wood trim to an architectural salvage company for an undetermined amount of money. Then they bulldozed the rest. Today there are 12 McMansions and 26 condos on the site. Meanwhile I was unable to convince the architectural salvage company to sell me so much as one splinter because they flipped the whole lot to a furniture maker who was turning it all into "post modern art furniture" and so I tracked them down and was unable to convince them to sell me one splinter because they had already gotten a contract to build post modern art furniture for some corporate headquarters on the other end of the country. So now the house my ancestor built is chairs and a conference table and credenza and book cases and executive desks and pantry cabinets in some never identified corporate headquarters. So I cry tears mixed of sadness for our loss but ones of joy for those like these people who get to go home again.

That roof needs immediate attention, but I am glad they are dedicated to restoring the house. I hope the auction company can trace the buyers of the contents and retrieve some or most of the items sold. By now, the original buyers may want to change their decor, or their children want something more modern. We can only hope! I hope this is the first in a series on this house... I wish there this couple had a restoring Pitchford Hall RUclips channel. I would love to watch it and to hear their stories. Even stories about hunting down the old treasures and bring them home. This building is way way way to fascinating for only 30 minutes. I could see there are more stories just of the land and surrounding buildings. Plus if they did RUclips I'd happily watch the adds knowing it was contributing to the restoration.

To Lady Julie and Lord Luke Montagu: As an American with ancestors on my maternal’s paternal lineage of the Beauchamp families ( American derivative name of Beacham and other phonetic spelling in the US) who came from Warwick Castle, England in that one of the descendants came to Virginia as an indentured servant and began his life in the Colonies. Your RUclips channel has taught me a very valuable historical and educational information regarding the nuances of the British families, how they lived, worked, the mannerisms within their relationships of families and friends, and the preservation of the historical estates. Since I have not been able to financially take a trip to England and retrace my Beauchamp ancestors to Warwick Castle, this is close as I can get to seeing the real life castle estates. Thank you for sharing your insight and willingness to educate us about the historical preservation of the buildings, and how you live in them today. Both of you and your husband is a delight to watch in each video with your down-to-earth sense of humor vibe! Thank you for being of service to humanity in this way! A job well done!!!❤️👏👏👏

Beautiful Ængla Land. Good story. Edward seems like a nice boy, glad to see he gets to enjoy this place with his family. When I was 6 I saw Candleshoe (1977) which is shot (exteriors at least) at Compton Wynyates in Warwickshire. I've enjoyed that movie again in more recent years. Stories like it, or even elements of Downton Abbey, and probably many more include this - 'English family must get their manor and estate back'. Redemption, restoration. Really nice.

Just imagine the millions of pounds it will take to restore Pitchford Hall. There should be a RUclips Channel or a reality show documenting the restoration. And what a lovely family as owners of the estate.

I love your intimate exploration of this property and it's truly heart wrenching story, Rowena is amazing, and an inspiration, well, both her and her husband ofcourse! I grew up in a Jacobean House, I definitely connect with the feelings she conveyed about the home and the ghost story. Now I renovate listed properties as a consultant. So really love I can give back to these old beautiful homes.

I saw in June that Lloyd’s of London is offering 3 million pounds of compensation to any of the 200 victims who qualify (unless they choose to fight for more which is feasible since many people lost more).
My hope is that the family is able to get compensation. Getting scammed placed such an undue burden on a responsible family. It makes me sad/mad on their behalf, especially since the house seemed to have been neglected by the previous own.

I would love to see Rowena start a channel on youtube as well. I love that she and her husband got the house back - it's amazing! These sorts of homes are exactly what I think of when I think of England. I'd love to own and live in such a home...the character of such homes. Maybe a youtube channel, about the history and this estate and the family, would help with gaining some funds to repair things - especially if they got sponsors and such? Just a thought. I know I'd watch their channel all the time.

Good for them for Rowena for perseverance! That is a LOT OF WORK they have taken on. Crikey Moses! This house will have to work for it's self from now on to maintain . Well done for preserving Mapperton and Pitchford for future generations!
There is a great British band that plays Jazz/Funk/Soul.... I have known about since the early 90's Here in America. They are called "Incognito!". Maybe this band can be booked for concerts for Mapperton and Pitchford Hall. Who knows? They are still one of my favorite bands.
