I can really understand why many americans oppose to the gun limiting current government, I live in Belgium where it's almost impossible to own a gun, let alone print one. Can't get any ammo either, with the war so close to us it just makes us realize that we have no power at all to protect what's ours, also in case of theft, burglary or home invasions we have no power to protect ourselves and if we do by any means most likely we become the perpetrator instead of the victim and get sentenced to jail. So no guns doesn't mean less crime, I think even more crime especially with the way our courts operate.
All I can say is that i support what you're saying just as many others and that no-one should touch your 2nd amendment.

Great video. I’m a very socially liberal person, also a Navy vet, an engineer and a gun owner and I completely agree with your stance on firearms. What I disagree with is your use of the word liberal to label people. When I started to watch your video, I was skeptical but as you explained your position, I found myself agreeing with you. But please don’t join the right wing fanatics with using the world liberal as a name to label people. Let’s take the word back from the media and use it as it was originally defined. My favorite part of the definition is “ an advocate or adherent of liberalism especially in individual rights” and here’s the part of the definition of liberalism that I’ll cite for the skeptics: “ a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties”

I like listening to your takes and enjoyed this video as well, but my gut reaction is to say that firstly, not everyone will have the opportunity, time, funds, etc to take a class on how to design a firearm. Secondly, the type of people that would spend the time and effort to purchase and calibrate a printer, order all of the required hardware, and then finally assemble and troubleshoot the final firearm, are statistically very, very unlikely to commit a violent crime with it. So in the end you're locking an already difficult process behind another barrier to entry due to a very small possibility of misuse.
Now obviously you have no obligation to release your files nor do I think you personally are stifling progress in the field of 3D printed firearms. But all the same, I think there's more to consider.

Great video. There is a flaw in your logic though. The question of being responsible for the use of your designs to do harm, in my opinion is not your responsibility. A couple ways to thing about this.
First, if you you release your designs can a bad actor get them, yes, but so can good actors. If 100000 people download your files and 10% print them and 1% use them and 0.01% use them to cause harm, if all but 1 of them do harm for good reasons, is that a failure or a win?
The other way to look at it is this, if a bad actor is going to do harm, does it stop him because your design isn't available? No, no it doesn't. Cain killed Able with a rock, so if the intentions are evil, the method is irrelevant.
    Food for thought.

The decision to release the files or not is a personal one and I respect it, but I'm not sure it's fair to say the designers have blood on their hands if their files are used in a crime any more than a car manufacturer is if someone uses their vehicle in a homicide. Civilians in that war were killed by everyone, from soldiers, paramilitaries, and even other civilians. After the end of the war, weapons were everywhere (from pistols, rifles, hand grenades, to mortars). Walking down the street you had to be careful not to look in eye any of these lunatics, because human life at that time in my country was cheap. They would kill you for 2USD. And I live in Europe. My country is part of the EU today. The monopoly on weapons and violence should be in hands of goverment. I support your decision not to share stl files. Interesting thoughts you share with us. I do not agree with the mono view, that a person can only become dangerous and mighty owning and having a gun. A rich person f.e. can be dangerous without using firearms. Someone who knows something and keeps it secret can be dangerous, as well as a person that knows something and does tell it to all the world. Think of Edward Snoden. Also I (thankfully) can not identify myself with a situation where a tall strong dude wants to beat me up. I think if you lead a life like that, it is even advisable to arm yourself, but I think this case is rather rare. Weapons for all means also more weapons for the few WRONG kinds of people. Mentally ill, criminals, and so on. They are the ones who are misusing their privilege.
Rather than saying generally that very person on earth should have free access to guns,
One last comparison: What would happen, if ALL states in this world would be allowed to buy nuclear weapons? One idiot among those many is enough, to ruin your day. No, there are definitely groups and people, which I do not to own guns. If we were all responsible shooters, mentally, economically, and in our family environment totally stable, ok. Until we have religious, political or criminal individuals who would the first to make use of such easy access, I do not see how it is in anyone's interest.
Add: from the technical point of few, I would not use 3D printed guns. Plastic is Plastic, not metal and it is easy to improvise a gun with a few household metal parts. In an actual conflict 3D printing and learning all that stuff would take much too long.

My opinions are my own; respect to every person opinions and their lifestyle. But if we ever get invaded by another country or we get attacked by a terror is group; the only army that matters is not our country’s but the one you and I “civilians” make. “Family, friends, comrades we should trust on.”
“A bad man is a person that knows doesn’t know itself that they’re doing a immoral and painful actions.”
“A crazy man is a man that knows what he does is a immoral and painful action and doesn’t stop.”
“A respectful and honest man, knows when and where to use his painful actions and does commit immoral deeds.”
If you do a painful action it doesn’t mean that you area bad or crazy person “as long as you do it trot the sake of your family, friends and comrades or even by your self. All means of survival for the ones you love.
You become a crazy and bad person when you do painful things for the pleasure of them selfs or others.
Rape, child abuse are immoral things that should never happen; and when they do; eliminating is the only way to prevent another casualty. but printing 3D weapons are done for the sake of the loved ones survival; “that just means that you are a honest and respectful person. Even when those weapons commit a killing/ murder.”
That is the reason I’m saving up to buy 3d printers and creating my own.
“I am a forger of 2 children. And for the sake of their survival I’m willing to defend and kill someone that is willing to do harm or immoral actions.”
Shorten version is… any good father or person is not evil because they, us, I 3d printed a weapon for the sake of survival; but it becomes a evil person when they, us or I 3d printed weapons for the sake of his own pleasure. If you steal to feed your family, is not a bad deed but it becomes evil deed when you steal for your own pleasure; such as, buying drugs.
Thank you for reading this. And always remember that we all have our freedom; so please respect all opinions and never be quick to assume all bad things are evil.

Matthew, have watched your videos for years and I always appreciate your perspectives. Our opinions often align, as it does in this video today. My only comment is be careful with the labels you use. A significant amount of effort goes into muddying the waters, or deliberately mislabeling things until meaning changes. You've been a victim of this yourself. Liberals and the neo-liberals / ultra "left" are not the same. This new group of always-playing-the-victim, taking away freedoms to satisfy their ego types are not liberals in any way and the distinction must be kept clear or it hurts actual people who ARE fighting for the freedoms of all.
Anyway, great video! I've also made a non-insignificant number of files of a dangerous nature. The machinery of firearms are very intriguing and fun to safely play with. I contribute to the community with suggestions and advice, but haven't shared my files for the same reasons you outline.

At best I think you're making accessories for a weapon. In both samples you recorded you'd made a stock that the 10/22 mounted onto. There's a plethora of companies that do this already and you adding to the mix should be less...consequential? You're not responsible for the actions of others and should not be constricted because of what people "might" do with them.
Although in this day and age that may be an antiquated thought as Americans are being conditioned to blame the "tools" and "tool makers" on the actions of criminals. Yes guns are intended to kill things. But people associate that with murder first instead of putting food on your table (hunting) or protection of you and yours from criminals. I personally like to go target shooting. Would your design help with that? Maybe. What I'd do with them would be my choice really. I don't need them though to be able to use my 10/22 as is.
Now, I'm already working on a CAD design myself. I'm building a Halo DMR rifle around the 10/22. Still need to figure out what to do about the trigger though as it's a bullpup rifle. I'd love to talk shop with you on this and bounce off some ideas. I'm currently prototyping something with a coat hanger!

i pushed "dislike" and here's why - some of the guns that Ukrainians use were provided to them by the government. Owning a gun is not a humans right (the way it is implemented in the US) why dont the US implement a Swiss model (you get to keep a gun after a military service) similar to what a driving licence is for. This way a gun owner is a trained individual. Some people know what it takes to make a gun but some people also know how to build a nuclear reactor, both can be harmless. My point is, its easier to police guns than people having them. Sorry for my chaotic thoughts

    • @kingleonitus12

The important part about 3d printed guns is that now, it is NOT easier to police guns than it is to police people with them. A 200 dollar machine and steel bars can make a 9mm carbine now. They're being used in Myanmar.
All the same, the right to self preservation is innate, and to control the tools with which one decides to defend themselves is to suppress that right.

One thought that occurred to me just a few minutes ago is that your rationale for not releasing the STL files for this weapon makes sense in a world where engineers are in a distinct class of people who would not misuse a weapon. Unfortunately there's an overlap between the two sets: those with engineering skills and those with social/mental disorders.
But I guess you do what you can to reduce the probability of causing harm to innocent people.

one of the most important ideas is that of chris hedges regarding gun ownership and social impotence. the reason why gun culture is nurtured and needed in the US is because if not for this token of power, the poor (white) working class would have to acknowledge the despair and powerlessness it has experienced and ended up with since the advent of unregulated keynesian capitalism and the complete destruction of the american working class

Locus of control is a concept from psychology worth learning about. It explains in a very logical, evidence-based way why losers always blame external factors. The social contract between the classes means nothing. For a brief period after WW2 the middle class in America did extremely well and for some stupid reason they thought that was the way of things forever. There is churn in the 1%. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, etc. Were all middle class as children. If you want something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done. There's a huge amount of luck involved, but there are things you can do to become more lucky. eg.The more times rule the dice, the more likely you are to hit double sixes. The world is better today than it has ever been in all of history for the vast majority of human beings. I always roll my eyes at people who want to criticize the mechanisms which got us here. There is massive room for improvement, but don't tear something down until you have something better to replace it.

I encourage you to watch and truly absorb the truths of two movies. 1) Enemy at The Gates 2)The Last King of Scotland. My interpretation of your words leads me to think you are resentful of other people's success. You therefore want to say the system is rigged and it should be torn down. Life is unfair. That's undeniably true, but the system is actually incredibly functional and your emotional reaction to the unfairness is leading you to advocate for things which would make the world FAR worse than it is today.
      > there is no "swlf made man"
I agree, but there is a LOT of unused talent in the world. Putting this talent to use; motivating this talent to build your vision in an extraordinary feat. The man didn't do it himself, but he did do something that inspired others to help him do it. Should we not respect him for being good at his position. Even if he was groomed for it from the day of his birth?

@@DesignPrototypeTest enemy at the gates is imho a pseudo historical romance which misinforms you about the war and thus has little informational value, the last king of scotland is colonialist apologia in too many ways to be relevant. as are most speeches given by royalty. both movies were merely emotionalizing a fraudulent historic frame to pull your eyes away from the uactual history and responsibilities at play
i counter with " come and see" by klimov. the hard truths grandparents in europe never talked about and all the shame and oblivion which has created pyramids of misconceptions we see as the canon of our history that is still driving our lives every day and deepening the divide.
The other film is Joshua Oppenheimers documentary about the true horror of the US indonesia intervention called "Jagal - The act of killing" (or for the more faint of heart "senyap - the look of silence"). This is when you understand the human condition at play and what it really means.
I m not resentful, I greatly appreciate the channel and your attitude as well as willingness to communicate, but i see so much historical gaslighting and mythology upon which we build our view of the world and that i resent.
I also am not saying that any of the billionaires mentioned do not act out of a mixture of their (however skewed it may be to me) moral compass and a certain degree of educated self interest. But i still think we should finally get rid of this mythology of self made billionaires who happen to be emerald mines or DARPA university projects from Paperclip... They may be the heirs but the question is if they inherit the sins of their fathers by inheriting their geopolitical claims and interdependences...
Such people CANNOT be emulated, they are born into dynasties and created by long standing cultures of power and an intellectual self perception that will always defend inheritage and fight against taxes, because that would mess up the lineage and continueity of plans that were made generations ago.

The idea of "gun makes you stronger" is very weird 🤔 You (as average US citizen, states differ a lot) have 4X chance to die from a gun and almost 14X chance to be killed with a gun than me.
I agree you with distributing weapon-related parts and designs - it's never good.

    • @DesignPrototypeTest
      @DesignPrototypeTest  2 года назад +1

Well articulated and astute. One critical feature of American exceptionalism (I do believe there is such a thing) is the championing of individualism. We value uniqueness and non conformity. This is the better way as compared to Autocratic dominance hierarchies where all that matters is how highly ranked you are. Sticking out in such an environment is a sure way to get hit until you represent the established norms. The Gun industry has, in a way, hijacked this societal value and convinced us that owning a gun makes us a strong individual. Of course even people from collectivistic societies love guns. It feels powerful holding one. Taking away people's guns feels to them like taking away something that makes them valuable. It's an insult to their ego. It's an emotional thing. Guns are not logical no matter how much post rationalization you do.

You are forgetting the golden rule: power corrupts. People having the power of a gun or other weapon and start out chaotic neutral, will likely evolve to chaotic evil. He himself will likely not consider himself as evil, but his actions would likely start showing that he thinks more of himself because of his power and thinks less of people without such power to the point that it will seem normal to dominate those. Even you already sound as if you feel yourself above the "harmless" non-dangerous people. I concur that knowing how to use a gun and maybe even knowing how to make a gun can be a useful skill, just in case you end up in a country being invaded by Putler. However, the freedom to own one or multiple guns without strict control makes for a dangerous environment as demonstrated too often in the USA. The problem is not the family father having a single gun stashed away SAFELY just in case (and probably has too little practical experience to actually use it), but the obsessed owners of all sorts of machine guns and other heavy weaponry, which must already be a result of some mental traits which I'd rather not see armed to the teeth ... So, living in Europe, 2 weeks ago I would have been certain that my kid would be more safe here than in the US. Now, with a crazy guy waving nuclear weapons ... I'm not so sure anymore, but also not yet convinced of the opposite ...

      What dangers has America demonstrated?
Not sure why you are worried about your fellow countryman owning lots of guns. In most European countries the military and police are very well armed and it's not dangerous.
Countries with conscription take a bunch of kids and give them access to all sorts of small arms and even more capable arms, it's still a very safe environment.

BINGO, this is an american problem. the culture is one of fear and the paranoia that you are next to be attacked or freedoms taken away, and gun violence is normalized and justified at a very young age through entertainment and the media. one commenter here even inquired about plastic explosives, holy hell. as i type this a gun video is suggested with 1.5 million views in just 11 days, obsession is an understatement. god if only that amount of attention could be drawn to an actual threat like climate change as we have 8 years left before earth reaches points of no return.
