I love the Avenger Titan, but turned it into a X8R because the TA is fairly easy to grind away at, and its a goal to work towards. There are also a few ships that I just can't fathom buying in IRL. I've got a little over $300 into the game counting some skins, the subscription service for about 10 months, and 2 pledges/3 ships that I've upgraded over the year or so and right now, I don't see myself spending more than a few bucks here and there on a store item and I fluctuate on the subscription service depending on how much I've been playing.

    CIG makes grinding for aUEC harder and harder.
    Even simple box delivery missions now involve derelict outposts swarming with enemies and no starter ship will survive their Cutlass Black always arriving after a minute or two. The later bunker missions are crazy with ~4 FPS servers. You cannot even switch weapons, but constantly die due to random invisible enemy fire, your body spawns in the centre of the planet and again you lose all your items which consumes all aUEC you made before. Eventually delivering the boxes will often let you end up in space until so many missions failed that the reputation with that faction is negative and you cannot get new missions again.

    I have acquired quite a significant fleet over the years I’ve been backing this game. Started way back in 2012 with a golden ticket, and ALL my ships have been purchased with real money. While over the years it has added up to a significant amount which opens up access to very very rare ships, overall I don’t think I’ve spent any more than I would’ve spent on other games as I give myself a gaming budget each year which is financed purely by overtime payments. That way it doesn’t effect any household savings.
    The main reason for purchasing with real money is the benefit of not losing the ships and having to grind for weeks or months again if I get killed in game, especially when I only have a very limited time to play anyway, I am however limiting myself to only using the ships in my fleet which the character can afford to run. So the bigger ships stay in the hangar unless it’s a very special event in game and I tend to stick with my smaller or medium ships. Taurus being the main workhorse.

    The insurances on paid ships will probably be changed drastictically cause of consumer protection laws. I'd imagine all real world purchased ships will all be LTI when the game goes live. Though the claim timers will be significantly longer than they are now and scale with the size/resources/avaliabiliy of your ships haul in the system your in (starter ships being like a few minutes where as like a javelin could be several weeks). The sail of aUEC in the cashop would disappear as to not enable people from bank rolling arms races. Ships with existing insurance packages will probably be changed to an insurance plus type package where it gets a automatically expedited timer, and ships without this enhanced tier can be added either through aEUC or cash shop item in 30 day periouds. While in game ships will need to be insured either with a significant portion of aUEC or some sort of cash shop purchased insurance package or risk being lost, however this does create a unique scenario for those with a lot of aUEC to simply purchase multiple ships rather than wait on a timer to have multiples in fast supply or to quickly outfit a military effort without others risk waiting on a long timer. I don't imagine them getting rid of selling ships in the cash shop however, they would probably go on some sort of limited rotation as well as new ships being made to keep funding the game and to give people a unique choice. Either I can earn the ship I want in game, constantly work to keep its insurance going in order to avoid the risk of it being gone forever, or purchase the ship when it goes on sale (hopefully at significantly lower prices than we are seeing now as they would be closer to DLC at that point then a funding effort) get LTI on it, and not have to worry about never seeing it again and allocate that money I was spending on insurance either getting better insurance or other in game things. Purchased subscriber flair more than likely will turn to skins that you can apply or repurchased in game after a set timer from a terminal.

    • @Farrister
      @Farrister  Год назад

      Yeah, I will be interested to see how it all translates. And of course the added complication that different laws affect different players. I wouldn't be surprised if they revisited the whole insurance system at some point

The money I save by not playing that game I save up and occasionally upgrade my ship with that cash or buy another. I have currently spent $400 over the past three years and have enjoyed my time in SC. Had I continued playing my old MMO the cost would have been tripled. I changed to SC and saved money. I though he might have weighed the pros and cons of auec vs cash. Time vs money. Maybe even a comparison of in game auec value vs cash price. A cyclone can be obtained with one mission but has very little money weaning potential apart from transport to a bunker. Where as a prospector can potentially be your cash cow to open up a whole world free (time cost) auec ships. Same could be said for a sentinal and a vulture.

    • @Farrister
      @Farrister  Год назад

      I think it gets too individual at that point. People assign different value to their time, and the 'true' value of something will be dependent on how much use they get out of it. A Prospector accordingly is more or less valuable to some players, depending on how much they like mining. So I tried to be a bit more general with some of the themes, I guess

    When I joined SC in alpha 3.15, I had a Titan avenger starter, and did a mining grind for all ships in game - including a Carrack and 890 Jump. With the recent wipes because of patch 3.18, I’ve organised my fleet around four cash ships.. took me a year to reach concierge.
    At this point in time, we don't know if there will be a wipe in patch 3.19, or whether its a partial inventory wipe (like patch 3.18.2), so I'd hold off buying until we receive some clarity (all my XT and JT aUEC)

    I understand that many players are not in a position to lay out real cash, or simply object or not wish to fork out what can be insane amounts of money for game content, but nowadays I prefer to purchase mine with real cash. I’ve spent several years playing the grinding game so I feel I’ve done the time. Now I’ve reached that stage where I want to enjoy the game for what it offers without the pressure of thinking I need to be making money all the time just to get back to the point I’d reached before one of the many wipes. To continually repeat this process knowing full well what the future holds would be a game killer for me. I don’t expect anyone to agree with me and I’m certainly not knocking SC but I’m playing this game for pleasure and the future seems a lot brighter knowing I can hit the ground running after a reset.

    To me it’s quite simple, get a ship of your liking, either a prospector or a ship that you can manage to do at least high risk bounty’s for real cash. That will save quite a bit of frustration with the wipes, always being able to fall back on a decent way to make aUEC. And even if you can only afford a starter ship IRL you can always upgrade that a little bit further down.

Example: The basic Greycat buggy that you could drive around your hangar with wasn't for sale for real cash but actually could be bought in-game for only 5.000 Uec's. Also the Origin 85X, a very handy tiny 2-seater luxury multi functional ship still can NOT be bought in the store, but CAN be bought in-game. Also I noticed that often prices in-game are much cheaper in comparisant to their real-money purchase options. Perhaps you can do a video on that next? I have a few pledge ships. I think keeping them through the wipes is the only reason to get them. I mean, everybody has 1, but most are or will be available for EAU. I happened to get a bonus Aurora when I originally signed up and it had lifetime insurance. I've upgraded it to a Cutty Black over the years so it's got the LTI on it now. I also upgraded the original pledge (mustang) to an Avenger Titan, then to a Pisces X8R. That only came with 3 months insurance. Then I have a Nomad with 6 months insurance that I recently purchased because it's just great to have around. I do think the insurance system should be reviewed. If you pay IRL cash for something you should be able to keep claiming it. Maybe add some type of EAU fee or add fines to be paid before they can be claimed. Something to balance it out and prevent it from being an essential pay to win with players with IRL ships just dominating. That being said, some of us could die of old age before they start messing with peoples money with insurance mechanics. I can go play Eve if I want to loose the money I spend on supporting a video game.

    Regarding LTI; it should be for a lifetime, but in game costs for upgrades to components (coolers, shield generators, etc...) and weapons should have limited insurance and especially cargo should have optional insurance (highly recommended).

    For me it all comes down to playtime. My rule of thumb is 1€ should get me at least 1 hour of gametime. So if I pay for a full game 60€, I expect that I get at least 60 hours of gametime out of it. So this also means that if I enjoy a game, I might invest some extra to incentevise the DEVs to bring more stuff that I like to the game. I usually prefer "Micro Transactions", like having a skin for a couple of bucks. So for SC I have a better starter ship, and will most likly use warbonds to get a Freelancer MAX, as I really like the ship. But I don't see myself spend any more money on ships, as it makes me question also the balance of the game. If a new player buys the released game (in 10 years maybe ^^) and they start aut with an aurora or mustang and see everyone fly javelins and idris and what not, it might frustrate them. Especially as some ships literally make the difference of being able to play a certain game loop or not. Sure you can rent a prospector for a day, but you can't rent a vulture to try salvage.
    In short: I don't want to be a whale in this game, but I will support the devs with micro transations if they offer something interessting, as I want to see the project get released.

    I've bought a few ships as a means of funding the project and often melt or upgrade them once in a while. I developed some sort of rules or strategy in doing so.
    For example, I try not to take away from my own experience of making money and buying new useful ships and then using them again to make more money. I'd especially avoid ships in the "money maker in the early stages in the game" category because that would take away all the fun. So when it comes to real money ships I tend to prioritize the fun, uniqueness, etc factors rather than utility.
    I also bought some really rare or hard-to-get ships like the Archimedes.
    And I aim to own with real money one ship in the 100m+ category as a mobile base for me and friends. So far there isn't a ship that perfectly matches my fantasy, but I'm sure eventually one will be announced and added to game.

  • @emperorurbi
    @emperorurbi Год назад +1

    In game currency is indeed perfectly viable at the moment.
    If you want to spend a little more, there's relative cheap ships in most gaming loops.
    I'm always happy to start in my arrow after a wipe :)
    when you like bounties, consider the arrow over the starter ship. you like the box runs or some trading check out the titan or maybe the cutty black.
    you like fps missions maybe an upgrade to a medical pisces could be for you.
    the mining loop and/or salvage require a bigger investment, but once the vulture is rentable it should be fairly easy to rent one to get enough auec to buy one later. .
    the prospector is already rentable in game to test out the loop and make some cash.
    there's also the two seaters that are fairly cheap in game to play with a friend.

Long insurance claims, long delivery times, long times required to kit out ships that have poor default configs, inventories getting lost whether on death or on storage/claim etc. etc. I tried for a couple weeks to 'earn' in game and found that the game seemed to be trying to rob me at every step of the way. ATM it makes absolutely no sense to make the insurance system more punishing when the vast majority of claims are bug related not player error. And we're pretty far away from that being changed significantly.

    I want LTI on my ships so that's one less thing I have to worry about. IMO, they should just assume everybody has insurance on all their ships by default. But they don't. So I buy ships in the Pledge Store so I can have LTI.

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK Год назад

      LTI is way too overhyped tbh even CIG admitted that in the past when they tried to stop giving out LTI but couldn't resist the money flow it brought in and kept going with it. Either you upgrade your ship or it gets obsolete because something new released before the base insurance runs out especially with the longer contracts and CIG already confirmed that it wouldnt be that expensive anyway and compared the renewing fee to refueling, maintenance cost and docking fees. LTI won't cover costs of insurance claims (expediting), repairs or lost non-stock equipment either so you need to insure any upgraded modules or weapons seperately anyway.

    In game insurance will have to be a strictly enforced in-game overhead because of consumer protection laws around the world. If it's a big enough money sink, could keep you too poor to leave a star system at some point without assistance

      I suspect a monthly premium for each ship. Should be a major factor in Tony Z's economy. It's a part of strategy that in-game purchasers and out-of game buyers should really consider. Capital ship premiums could be hefty

    It's kind of a Catch-22, you spend days grinding for ships in game just to lose them during a server wipe, and even if you're really lucky and the persist through a wipe, you will still lose them before the game eventually goes to full release anyway (baring a huge change of heart by CIG). On the other hand, say you spend tons of real money on a fleet of ships, all with lifetime, or at least really long-term insurance. Then you've taken a lot of incentive out of actually playing the game. As a cargo hauler, why do I need to spend a year grinding my way up to that Hull E if I have one setting in my hanger on Day 1 of full release?

    Most of your ship money is going toward the production of Squadron 42, which you do not get with your purchase. Give yourself something to do in-game and buy the ships there.

    Buying ships in-game should be the way to go. It would be the primary motivation to make money in the game; get a better and bigger ship. It's a more tangible goal than something like "I want to just have fun and enjoy the game."
    For me, I always think about what ships I want to start off with. It'll be one daily driver, one backup, and maybe one long range ship. They all should be "general purpose" or multi-purpose versatile ships. From that point on I'll buy more specialized ships in-game (explorer, mining ship, salvage ship, hauler, etc). At least at this point. Things may change depending on how the game evolves.

    If you enjoy playing the game then spend what you can afford and or subscribe if nothing else. I buy ships when I can. Then I can trade them in on bigger more expensive ships next time I have an extra 100-200 to spend. Someday I may have a 1300.00 ship. In the mean time I like buying paints for the ships that I own.

    Even without wipes I'd buy ships. I just don't have the time to grind these days.

    I have long held that ship prices in game (especially prior to the recent price jumps, but even still) were, and are, set appropriate to the inflated payouts and temporary nature of such ships, (being subject to wipes) the current state of the game, they want it to be fun to earn a bunch of ships easily while people are messing around with the alpha game.
    but come 1.0. I think the economy will undergo a big refactor. and either they will devalue the UEC (or Speso, as I call it) so that, like the peso, it's almost worthless, but it makes idiots feel good to earn millions of spesos an hour, even if it means a hamburger costs thousands of spesos,
    OR they go back to the good old days when a UEC is worth about a dollar. a hamburger costs 5 UEC and a beginning player might earn 500 UEC for a basic mission. ultimately the value of money vs items and ships and money sinks in the game will mean that a ship which NOW takes about 20 hours to earn might take 200 hours to earn. and people are not going to want to spend all their time grinding. they will want to spend time PLAYING.
    I think the common maxim of "you can earn all the ships in the game" will become, for most people, "you can earn ANY ship in the game... maybe even 3 or 4 over time."
    I picture my trading career: if I start out with a Nomad, I'm spending dozens of hours to build up to the point where I'm able to haul some really profitable cargos. Finally I'm rich enough I could afford to haul 46 SCU rather than just 24, but now I have to spend weeks to earn a cutlass, or maybe a freelancer. and start leveraging that larger cargo capacity to earn some "real money" and maybe in another 6 months, I am able to afford a FL Max, or a MSR, Zeus, or maybe even a Taurus. Wow, with that massive 100-200 SCU capacity. maybe in another year I can earn a ship with 450-700 capacity... you get the picture. and you can see that buying "toys" along the way (fun ships like racers, or cute little alien ships, or that 400i I thought "I'll just buy that in game" will REALLY set me back in my career, and it might be YEARS before I finally have a Large scale cargo ship, and the cash flow to keep it filled with lucrative cargo. and FINALLY be able to save up for a 350R or a Connie Phoenix or Khartu-al.
    now for ME, I am buying all these cargo ships as "stepping stones" ahead of time with Cash. and I am buying some of the "toys" with cash, so I don't have to wait until I'm rich enough in game, 5 years from now, to start buying them out of business profits. I can enjoy them from Day 1. If I want to go out and race with the org, I have my 350R, a variety of speeder bikes, I've got my beautiful Talon and my Khartu-Al, which is really not practical for anything except "cool factor."
    And I can spend my "grinding time" just earning more valuable or larger cargos.
    eventually it comes down to time. If I can buy a ship with 20 hours of real world work, or 200 hours of In Game work (grinding), and given my age and family, I might be lucky to have 5 hours of gaming a week. but I have about 60 hours of real world work a week. buying ships for cash is a STEAL.
    That said, there are a few ships I won't buy with cash, such as the 890 Jump, which I intend to make my in game goal ship. what I am working towards to earn. a reason to actually play the game.

    when the game moves to beta expect the economy to COMPLEATLY change to a more player based economy with manufacturing of ships being LIMITED supply and prices being set by the demand
    ships will most likely be sold as "Hulls" not whole ships and parts will be bought and everything has to be insured manually.
    this is the organic path i see CIG headding towarD because this whole quanta thing and TDD having infinitte money supply is never going to produce a working economy
