Our October addition to the CAS fleet is this limited edition RHD Porsche 996 Turbo S with the all important manual gearbox. The 996 rewrote the script for the 911, with the most significant change being a water-cooled engine replacing the previously air-cooled engine. Plus that controversial 'fried-egg' front re-design of the lights definitely split opinions!
In this episode, Raj introduces the new car to the channel as well providing a little history lesson and the reasons behind the redesign. Let us know in the comments what you think of this new car and also Raj's cooking skills!

    I haven’t seen a 993 turbo next to a 996 turbo for a while… boy do I love the 996 more than a 993🖤

after owning an 85 g-body for years and always salivating over the 993 sleekness by comparison i semi-begrudgingly got into an '02 turbo, wooed by the performance but always with a wishful softspot for the 993. Now seeing them side by side, as you point out, i'm having a rethink. The 996 is waaaaay sexier..... ruclips.net/video/o1voHMU3KD0/видео.htmlsi=z42k7GENdcewVA30&t=469

The 996 turbo and 4S will become the most wanted 911's in 10 years! (next to the gt2 and gt3 off course)
The mk2 "egg" headlights are NOT ugly 🙂
First water-cooled and first real drivable 911. Buy now, have the fun of your live and never loose money on it!
    I love 996 mk2 Porsches!
(as a 996 targa owner maybe a bit biased...)

  • @std882

People always fussed about the fried egg headlights but they should really differentiate them. There are two versions. The first ones that came out with the regular 996 and this Turbo version, which was later added onto the non turbo cars as well. The early cars' headlights are what I really don't like. That is the real fried egg version because of the orange part for the turning signal. The Turbo version actually looked so much better. As the years go by, it's looking even more beautiful. At 5:47 the 996 Turbo actually looked more aggressive than the 993.

I have a 2002 996 Turbo with X50 pack - basically the same car without the ceramic brakes. Moved up from a 1986 3.2 Carrera Supersport (turbo body), so quite a change. As you say, it can be used everyday. Drives happily off boost and is very docile. On boost it turns into a completely different car with eye-widening acceleration - love it.

As a bit of history the car was designed by Pinky Lai who previously designed the BMW E36 (And it is surprising how many people have owned both E36 and 996 cars!) Also the main reason for the much maligned headlights was that the 993 was hideously expensive to build so Porsche got Toyota involved to try and “Productionise” the design. One of Toyota’s suggestions was rather than fit 2 headlights, 2 indicator lights and 2 fog lights to every car if instead all lights were built into single units (Which can be fitted into the car in seconds) then Porsche could shave time and money off the building of the car, an important factor given the common parts across the build of both 996 and 986.
Regards upgrades? Given its task as a daily driver I’d suggest the fitting of the Porsche PCM (Or any double din) but I hardly need to tell you guys that!
Beyond that? As others have said upgraded engine mounts (I have RSS semi solid ones) make a hue difference to the car when cornering.
Others have recommended KW though I have Ohlins those these might be a little stiff for a daily. Another highly optimised option is Centre Gravity are developing a special kit developed with Bilstein specifically for fast road use. No doubt you are aware of Centre Gravity already but their reputation in the community is second to none. Oh, and the 996 is very sensitive to good geometry and good tyres.
Love the car having had a 996 Turbo as a daily a few years ago and absolutely adored it. The vacuum assisted clutch might feel a bit “Wooden” but means that even in heavy traffic the manual box is a joy.
Finally the CAE shifter mentioned elsewhere is a work of art but might be a bit too “Racecar” for a daily. A more subtle option would be the Numerik shifter (Which is invisible when fitted) or alternatively for the “OEM plus” route I fitted the 997 GT3 factory shifter. Slightly shorter shift than you’ll have now and metal bearings for a more precision feel.
Look forward to following more on the car!

Cooking with Raj needs to come out soon, love the reference😂😂😂 Congratulations Raj, very nice daily, looking forward to see what mods you're gonna put on this. I would get a new headunit along with some coilvers.

I know everyone Loves the air cooled Turbo's! But I live in Orlando Florida and when our rally group goes out on Summer Days on a Children's Benefit Rally the air cooled guys can't get enough air conditioning to work, the cars are running really HOT and they hate to run them. We are talking 95 -100 degrees in the shade when its a normal summer in Orlando. So, air cool is so very cool to have. Just not what my Porsche Club Rally guys like to drive in the summer and in Florida, its basically always Summer here. Most of our vintage guys run 996 and up. Just my opinion...

Turbo S owner here used as a daily. You got a bargain at 53k quid. Keep the HOLLOW SPOKED wheels. You now have a safer, faster, and more predictable ride. Your friends should read up on Porsche history, air cooled snobs. One of the rarest 911s out there.

As someone who has a 4S for a daily (and a 993 for the weekends), I would say first thing is Porsche's PCCM+ and one of these wireless CarPlay adapters. The guys that did mine managed to hide the USB thing to the left hand side of the glove box (but in a way you can't see it). Game changer if you are indeed going to use it as a daily. You start the car and your Waze, Google Maps, Spotify and everything connects automatically. No cables anywhere :)

Don't forget. That engine you have is a Mezger engine. It's LeMans derived.
Hans Mezger designed that engine. The best engine Porsche ever made.
    UPGRADES:
    1. CAE ULTRA shifter - Must HAVE
    2. RSS Engine mounts - Must HAVE
    3. RACRO Pole Positions
    4. 19" (BBS) wheels
    5. KW 3 Coilovers
    6. Sachs clutch and light weight flywheel
    7. RSS suspension kit.
    8. Half role cage painted same colour as calipers
    9. Braided break lines
I could go on. The first two.... Are a must though.
Same car ;) in seal grey.

Great Vid! Moody brothers need to put some respect on the name of the 996 turbo! Not fried eggs for a start. Love my 996 turbo. My mods: Full geo setup with Chris and Pete at Center Gravity (transforms front end), Kline exhaust 200 cell cats (bit more noise and free flowing), 997 GT3 shifter kit (not too short but reduces the long factory shift), Markski intercoolers (efficient), Markski remap...transforms an already fantastic setup from the factory and subtle too.

I have a 2002 C4S in Sydney as my daily. Couldn’t stretch to a Turbo here (stupid prices in Australia). Upgrading stereo for 2DIN wireless with nav was a game changer. Numeric short shift upgrade too (no need for you probably). These cars don’t need any major mods for daily road use, and I think will benefit long term value. Plenty of power and amazing grip levels in all weather…and they are reliable which is a must for a classic daily. Have fun.

Hey man!, I just jumped on this channel by chance and must say I like the effort put in the videography side of things plus I’m here because I proudly own a 997 c4S which I bought with a Hartech rebuilt engine , tan leather everywhere dash included! In a midnight ocean blue with oem staggered multi spokes rims wrapped on Bridgestone runflats , factory aero kit , Makkasar sycamore package & sports chrono plus . The 911 was a childhood dream car I would one day own and now I have one .. love it to bits! It it’s the 993 & the 1989 models was my lust over pin-up models 😅.

... at 7:28 to be precise, the spoiler on the 996 Turbo adjusts itself hydraulically. It's one of the 996TT's trouble spots as the car ages. For anyone who thinks the 993 Turbo is car perfection, I would point out its rather outdated and non-integrated interior design, which still shared elements with 20 year older cars. And whether on the outside it's more beautiful than the 996, that's personal taste, I would argue. The 993's oversized spoiler undermines its otherwise great looks.

  • @stephenauty2402

Boxster never had those lights , they are gen2 996 Carrera C4S and Turbo only....the so called fried egg headlights were the early 996/986 cars with amber lights...which in my opinion look the best.
Don't think I'd daily it personally but if you can afford it then yes what a car.
