      @J K They sent the parts back to Japan for testing. Not sure anything was actually revised though - most likely they tested them to make sure they weren't going to end up with too many warranty claims. BMW's are for people who can buy or lease one new every 3-5 years before they start to act up, or enthusiasts who are happy to spend time and money fixing older models. Given the Supra's engine has all the usual plastic bullshit in hot/wet/oily areas that should be metal that every modern BMW engine has, and that will start to break down after about 5 years of normal use, I can't see the Supra being any different. Also when those plastic timing chain guides wear out, you've got to pull the engine out to get at them because they put them on the back of the engine! I swear stupid shit like that is done deliberately just to make people think they should just buy a new car rather than deal with the problems!

      The turbo 996 is unlike the other 996s. The normal 996s are known for the catastrophic engine failures. The turbo 996 came with a different engine. The metzger engine. It won the 24 hours at lemans and held up through that. Outside of lemans the 996 turbo is known as a very very reliable car.

  • @npaul4171
    @npaul4171 5 лет назад +9

    I've always loved these, and how they were produced at a major transition point of analog to digital. The driving experience is unique and fun. The car was available in a proper manual transmission. And the headlights (love them or hate them) make this generation distinctive compared to other generations. I personally dig the looks. The Turbo will probably maintain pretty good reliability over time, and I think demand for these will probably increase as those who were coming of age during the 996's run are now entering their prime earning years.

    I have a 997 turbo with intake/tune/exhaust (same basic Mezger motor) and you definitely won't lose the old-school turbo lag feel by doing upgrades. The motors are known for being bullet-proof in terms of longevity - there's a guy who put over 400K miles on one - but you have the coolant line issue that's pretty common and all kinds of other things can go wrong with these cars. Just like any old German performance car they can seem like an amazing bargain until something breaks. Then again, I don't have any plans to get rid of mine :)

    My father bought a 996 turbo x40 ( WLS ). It's like a gt2 but with all the interior and Bose sound system. Same breaks, same engine, same everything. My fahter bumped the engine up from 450 HP to 511 HP tested on a dyno he installed a new exaust from Gemballa that's not even legal any more in germany because it's too loud. The Porsche is from 2003 with the newer Navigation system and everything and 130.000 km on the clock ( 80.000 miles ). This engine is the best engine that Porsche ever made in terms of reliability at least. There is always something more efficient but it's also pretty decent producing power. Glad to see that you enjoy this car too!

    There's a fellow in some of the track driving circles who has a 996 Turbo with well over a half million miles on the original motor and goodness knows how many of those miles have been flat-out on a circuit. If you maintain it, it will last basically forever....that and many of the general interior parts cross reference to the vanilla 911s of that generation of which there are many, plus a strong aftermarket. Coolant hoses aside, seems hard to mess this one up.

      Honestly, the last few years of the 993 has a bit of that 90s feel. But if you look at pictures of it and the 930, I'd say it resembles more of a 70s car than a 90s. The 996 was really the first modern interior. It's not my taste in interiors personally. I think so of the hate generates from it sharing a design with the Boxster. Which is silly, because pretty much all models across the portfolio. And Boxster are fine cars.

    Having owned both a 996 Turbo and a 997 Turbo, which was so good I kept it for 11 years, the 997 is a massively better car in pretty much every way compared with the 996. The PCC brakes are a huge improvement and the engine is noticeably more progressive. The ride is better as is the steering. Both my cars had 550 HP and whereas I always felt the 996 was out to kill me, as in extremis, it still suffered the lift off oversteer of some earlier 911’s, the 997 has the handling much more under control and you always feel it is working for you.

    Still always been a fan of the 996 911. Had a good buddy in high school who’s dad owned a line of Chevy dealerships in Colorado. As luck would have it, he owned (at 16 years old) a 911 turbo in yellow. And let me drive it. And I’ve been in love ever since. As a matter of fact, I’m in the market to buy one as we speak. Very incredible car. Loved this video

    I have one. I've almost always had a Porsche: 356 As, Bs Cs, 912, narrow body 911, 911sc, Boxsters...
    The 996tt is the one I would most like to drive right now, in modern traffic. Boxster second for it's normally aspirated soundtrack, then the narrow body 911 (except it would be uncomfortably valuable) then the 356 roadster, then the 356sc.
    It is a great combination of analog feel , raw performance, and sure footed competency.
