I have a 997 turbo with intake/tune/exhaust (same basic Mezger motor) and you definitely won't lose the old-school turbo lag feel by doing upgrades. The motors are known for being bullet-proof in terms of longevity - there's a guy who put over 400K miles on one - but you have the coolant line issue that's pretty common and all kinds of other things can go wrong with these cars. Just like any old German performance car they can seem like an amazing bargain until something breaks. Then again, I don't have any plans to get rid of mine :)

I always said the exact same thing... you can't see the lights from the driver's seat, so who cares. I loved my 996tt. Made over 700hp to the wheels and it was an absolute blast.
My father bought a 996 turbo x40 ( WLS ). It's like a gt2 but with all the interior and Bose sound system. Same breaks, same engine, same everything. My fahter bumped the engine up from 450 HP to 511 HP tested on a dyno he installed a new exaust from Gemballa that's not even legal any more in germany because it's too loud. The Porsche is from 2003 with the newer Navigation system and everything and 130.000 km on the clock ( 80.000 miles ). This engine is the best engine that Porsche ever made in terms of reliability at least. There is always something more efficient but it's also pretty decent producing power. Glad to see that you enjoy this car too!

There's a fellow in some of the track driving circles who has a 996 Turbo with well over a half million miles on the original motor and goodness knows how many of those miles have been flat-out on a circuit. If you maintain it, it will last basically forever....that and many of the general interior parts cross reference to the vanilla 911s of that generation of which there are many, plus a strong aftermarket. Coolant hoses aside, seems hard to mess this one up.

Honestly, the last few years of the 993 has a bit of that 90s feel. But if you look at pictures of it and the 930, I'd say it resembles more of a 70s car than a 90s. Us Porsche owners are a special kinda breed. I will say that the 996 is a pretty car both in standard and the GT flavours. Everything after was just digital...
I don’t understand the hate on the design of this car, the front is honestly what I associate with the typical Porsche design language. Then again, I grew up in the early to mid 2000’s, but it honestly looks better than most of the other Porsche designs IMO.
If you put a Klein catless exhaust and just do a simple stage 1 computer tune this car will blow your mind. It's ridiculously quick and sounds amazing.
Totally agree! A couple things to look at... check the radiators. They start to weep after about eight years. We replaced ours with solid aluminum. How could you not like that!! The orange color, the overall look and styling of the car between interior and exterior! 🤔 I bet it’s a blast!!
Head banging to Dolly Parton hahaha
A recipe for black eyes lol
that exhaust sounds just like my Grandpas 2000 subaru legacy wagon and I love it
6:23 ".....hoovies garAge" you said it just like we swedes do in Swedish. 👍👍
Sverige gang
or wqatch harrys garage. how he says it as an englishman
Like peterbjörk xD
Honestly my all time favourite Porsche for looks and drive-ability
"Here is why I'm selling my Porsche after barley driving it in one year."
I'm pretty sure it was Hops driving... 😂
@D.O.A. haha, after 2 hours we post at the same time Hops jokes.
Took me a minute, but I got it....Beerly......
Barley drive it a lot and might have crashed it.
The 996 is THE Porsche for me and will always be.
Same here, I'd get another 996 before I got any other. My last 996 made over 700hp and was the most fun car I've ever driven!
Love the 996 Gen 911 Porsches 😍
I think those headlights looks like the legendary Porsche GT1 !! I like it!! Great review!
Normally wouldn't like that color but it works on that car 👍
That is a sweet ride Tyler. Thank you for your channel. I have enjoyed so many episode’s
"wrapped in awwnge"
Us Porsche owners are a special kinda breed. I will say that the 996 is a pretty car both in standard and the GT flavours. Everything after was just digital...
Hoovie hocking earbuds for Ray J..
Who would of thought..lol
I don’t understand the hate on the design of this car, the front is honestly what I associate with the typical Porsche design language. Then again, I grew up in the early to mid 2000’s, but it honestly looks better than most of the other Porsche designs IMO.
hoovies i would leave it silver color and put the original turbo wheels, make it classy and age well.
Totally agree.
If you put a Klein catless exhaust and just do a simple stage 1 computer tune this car will blow your mind. It's ridiculously quick and sounds amazing.
I think the silver looked better.
Whoever was singing the song at the end has a great voice.
German lullaby ...
USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
:)
Need I say more...
You made it...someone in Croatia is watching You...
:)
That poster is probably why he's had so many cars break lately. Those Galaxy class starships are endless money puts as they age
Croatian nerd spotted! JK! Live long and prosper.
Hoovies videos are creative, well produced and darned entertaining.
hoovies garage, barely makin it over 10 minutes with a one minute ad.
Always loved the 996. Had a non-turbo and it was great. Next one is going to be a turbo. Gotta free up a parkin' spot first. #FirstWorldCarProblems.
I wonder why Hoovie doesn't own a Saab 9-3 turbo X
Strange turbo setup!! Only the left enginebank provide the turbo pressure. So strange!!!!!!!
He needs a 2008 9-3 Turbo-X sport Combi! He'd like it with his wagon fetish lol.
@@Heathertheheathenkitty true true. He can finally get rid of that cursed C63.
@@Blasterxp nope
Totally agree! A couple things to look at... check the radiators. They start to weep after about eight years. We replaced ours with solid aluminum. Also, replace the coolant hose out of the pump (If you haven't already) Ours split the entire length. These car's are great but hate being water cooled and activity try to shake that system off like a dog that hates his collar...
This car is worth $40k+ all day, any day. I know, I've been looking. If you ever fall in love with a 996 Turbo S Cabrio and plan to sell this, contact me.
Tyler: I couldn’t agree with you more. I have a 2004 turbo cab and just love it because it’s so old school. FYI. I’m sorry I missed seeing you last Thursday when I stopped in to see The Wizard on my way from CO toTX. I did see he had finished your 911 and it was ready for pickup. Enjoy and have fun. They are amazing cars.
Blown coolant lines... Not the worst thing that can happen in Topeka...
Oh Tyler! Canary Yellow would be an excellent colour update!
Next week it blows up and Tavarish buys another project car he never finishes!!
Haha, love the poster of the Enterprise in the background of your garage. Good to see another real Trek fan.
Well it’s perfect although it broke up a couple of times and spent months fixing it🤷🏻♂️😅
In the Hoovie-book, that *is* perfect.
Didn't it only break once when he pushed it on the track?
@@ArKritz84 no,no, you have to be correct:
almost, it is almost perfect ...
to let space or a parking lot for the next cheapest, perfect one to be found in the world.
Couldn’t agree more! Grew up with 996’s and they were all amazing cars!
A Porsche in Ford Orange! I like it!
ah ha I knew I saw that weird color before.
My dad recently just purchased a 997.2 Carrera S and he loves it !
The best Porsche ever made was the 928 in my book.
My favourite is the 914
That orange and black looks amazing
the E63 wagon by the way I love it still one of my favorite even after all the shit you been through have you ever thought about contacting legit streetcar and collabing with him he is a Mercedes Master Mechanic and seems unusually confident especially for a RUclipsr mechanic just trying to think out of the boxer
and its Greeeeen 🤪
Green Aston, blue lambo, orange Porsche, and a purple RR what a line up
Oh yeah he's flexing Porsche on the garage rug
To hide oil spots? ;-)
@@Blasterxp lol
Bas BlasterXP oh God that's an expensive shop towel
It's always funny when someone says "they sell for a fraction of other brands" - because 7/2 is also a fraction...
I think you've finally found your groove Hoovie. Now lose that E63.......quick!!
I have one. I've almost always had a Porsche: 356 As, Bs Cs, 912, narrow body 911, 911sc, Boxsters...
The 996tt is the one I would most like to drive right now, in modern traffic. Boxster second for it's normally aspirated soundtrack, then the narrow body 911 (except it would be uncomfortably valuable) then the 356 roadster, then the 356sc.
It is a great combination of analog feel , raw performance, and sure footed competency.
These look soooo nice lime green. Please Hoovie it will make my day
I agree so match that I bought 2 996 .. 1999 in mint condition، 2001 used and abused .. but ran perfectly.. and am Enjoying every second in it.
