    Porsches and 911 turbos are not about headlights, they are about performance. Who ever makes comments about such nonsense has missed the point of these beasts. They are beautiful driving machines.

    In a Supercar interior would be seen as minimalist, as focus is on driving. For 996, it gets hate it shouldn't for interior. Especially from the driving enthusiastic crowd that should be more concerned with driving Dynamics and not luxury features. From my standpoint as a luxury buyer I don't see the car as lacking for what it does. I wasn't expecting a super luxury interior back when this car first came out. The interior simplicity is good for enthusiasts imo.

  • @henryatkinson1479
    @henryatkinson1479 2 года назад +17

    7:00 The hood is actually not mode of aluminum. No body panels on the 996 are, everything that's metal on the 996's body is some sort of steel. There's a breakdown of what's what in the factory service book if you're interested.
    EDIT: 12:40 That was not even close to the first twin turbo Porsche. The first twin turbo roadgoing car they made was the 959 with twin sequential turbocharging, and it was followed up by the 993 Turbo, which used conventional twin turbocharging just like the 996.
    EDIT 2: 5% is a pretty gross overestimation of IMS failures, and rally dumbs down the problem. The lawsuit alleged a 1.5% failure rate on single row bearing M96 (so M9603 and M9603S on the C4S), while the dual row bearing in the early M96 (M9601 and M9601S) had a failure rate of less than 0.5%. There's also a lot of factors that play into it. Low mileage cars are more likely to fail, and replacing the bearing on a car with a manual is ridiculously easy.
    EDIT 3: On your interior comments. Firstly, yes, the cupholders were an afterthought. The 996 interior was designed in the early 90s and debuted in 19993 on the Boxster concept car. It went basically unchanged for the 996 when it went into production in late 1997. The cupholders used to be detachable pieces that clipped in front of the air vents on either side of the dash (so over the ignition and in the same place on the passenger side). This was dropped in 2002 in favor of option in-dash cupholders as you have. Further, the center console locks because the original 996 had no glove box. The airbag module was larger and an older design, so it took up the entire passenger side dash. This changed in 2002 as well. The locking console was a carryover. Nothing to do with cabriolet.

      Henry you obviously know the ins and outs when it comes to Porsche. In you’r own opinion is the standard lighter 996 c2 with the right suspension a better driving car compared to the all wheel drive turbo or C4S???

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 Год назад +3

      @@treedeblue Really depends. The Turbo and C4S give you tons and tons of grip, whereas the C2 is more nimble and direct like older 911s. If you want something that sticks to the road, the Turbo or C4S are the way to go.

    • @treedeblue

      @@henryatkinson1479 thank you Henry. I’m conflicted, but I think the old school 2WD 911 feel might be more for me. I already owned a TTRS manual 2013 and I have a feeling the turbo would be very similar

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 Год назад +2

      @@treedeblue 996 Turbo is honestly the better car. The dry sump Mezger is more than worth the AWD. Its still a 911, and it will feel a lot more nimble than the TT did, just not as light and tossable as a C2.

    Congrats on the 996 Turbo. My 993 Turbo was the first twin turbo Porsche. The headlights you show on the picture of the Boxster were the headlights no one liked and were called the runny egg headlights due to the amber lenses. That runny egg headlight was on the base 996 from 98-01 Your 996 Turbo in 2001 had the revised headlights that everyone liked better and those updated lights appeared on the regular 996 starting in model year 2002.. The 996 Turbo was a big hit when it debuted due to performance and revised headlights

    The front vents are not for downforce, they are ducting to cool the brakes. Also, you don't jumpstart in 1st gear bet second. And please, please don't ever smash the funk like that! The tires in front are not taller, the 40 is a percentage of the width so 40% of 225 = 90 mm in the rear it's 35% of 295 = 103,25 mm. The ceramics are NOT part of the X50 package, they were an option. Even on the x50 package. The 996 also has a light pointing down from the roof, it's in the centre roof console. The lights in the doors are not for lighting the starter key but are just crude ambient lighting. They stay on while driving.

    Nice quality video ,but let me correct you about two things. First, the front lights of the turbo and 996.2 where not on the Boxster neither the GT1 ;) Second thing, the "turbo s" model (2005) got the standard ceramic brakes (PCCB) and other extra like sport seats, not the X50. The optional performance package "X50" had bigger intercooler + bigger turbo (k24) + reinforced gearbox + a different ECU map (as the "turbo s"). I have an X50, cheers from Prague :)

    I purchased a 2001 996 Turbo earlier this year. Virtually identical to yours - however, there is slightly larger spoiler, after market X-pipe, and Fabspeed air intake, and the silver painted interior trim and carbon fiber. I did opt for the Tiptronic as I have a bad knee and I can't do a clutch anymore, unfortunately. An absolute beast of a car...and got it for a bargain. I got lucky. Thanks for this video. Well done! The exhaust tips are X54 option the 02-05 did not come with them factory without the option. Also the 225 width 45 wall is duplicated with a wider width and a shorter wall. Also the x50 was bigger turbos. The ceramic brakes were a different option. The reason why the glove box locks is because the 01 did not have a glove box so that was the only storage. The key on the left is because the driver could have his hand on the shifter and turn the car on at the same time...

    Outstanding subject, excellent production, good presentation, but frankly comical inaccuracies.
    IMS only affected 5% of the 996’s? Then why do more than 70% of them have new ones retrofitted?
    C4S won’t go up in price? You sure about that? The last 5 years says otherwise.
    First twin turbo flat 6?
    The list goes on… and don’t even get me started on the headlamp story.
    All good fun. Thanks for the video.

    Several years ago, I purchased a 2005 Turbo S Cab. I chose a 996 because it had depreciated so much. I believed at the time that paying $54,000 for a 24,000 mile 996 was market at the time, but represented a very good deal in reality. If the headlights caused the price to decline, I was OK with that and did not find the appearahe prnce objectionable. By the way the original price of my vehicle was $157,000. The car also has leather seats, dash and door panels... I now have just over 28,000 miles. With the price increasing I have considered selling just to capture the higher value.... Oh the car is a Tiptronic.... I also have a 1991 964 cab....

It's annoying when people blindly and incorrectly regurgitate misinformation that doesn't even apply to the car they're talking about. The Turbo headlamps were never put on any Boxster.

    Lovely car. Like v much. I PREFER the 996 gen 2 headlights to those on any other model. I missed the 911/Boxster snobbery or the air to water cooled irk. Mind is a 2004 40th anniversary edition, so only 345bhp, narrow body, but low mileage and beautiful condition. I’ve updated it with PSSM+, PSE and of course new tyres all round. I really adore the combination pointed out here, that it’s modern enough to use it for any purpose but analogue enough to feel strongly classic. The internet was so recent and mobile internet almost edgy back then, that it’s not loaded with digital tech. I have recently begun to regard too much digital, always connected tech as surveillance and remote control potential. Call me paranoid. They really are after us 😮
    Noted typical 996 scratch on centre of C pillar, where a rear wiper malfunctioned at some point. Once this is pointed out, you see it often. 26 min.

    "Cheap"? Maybe 10, or even 3 years ago. Or do you think 50k-60k is cheap? I bought my 996 15 years ago and it was definitely a great deal.

  • @Wewawewa123
    @Wewawewa123 2 года назад +1

    While the car is appreciating in value, it's actually *costing* you money to own (gas, insurance and maintenance). So the $40K-$60K calculation needs to be metered against cost of ownership. Tough to call cars "investments". More often than not, they are depreciating assets.

    • @matpatte
      @matpatte 2 года назад

      Correct, but 996 Turbos are now well past their bottom and are now steadily appreciating like every 911 Turbo has done in history after finding the belly of the depreciation curve. I actually picked up 3 of these recently, my annual insurance cost for all 3 on guaranteed value coverage is ~$1100.

    Have the opportunity to buy a 2002 turbo 996 silver with custom ordered light blue tint from Porsche originally. Car is bone stock just over 65,000 original miles. Has sunroof, Bose sound system, black leather. The coil packs were resently replace along with new spark plugs. The oil pressure sensor replaced and the rear spoiler hydraulics replace with electric units. Mechanic owned and paint great condition with minimal scratches can purchase for $35k. Car is set up as a Grand touring not exactly my taste but the price seems good considering the current market.
    Just looking for some opinions if this would be a good car to snap up and possibly upgrade to a more track focus package in a year or two?

    • @DSC800

      I read somewhere that the 996 interior was designed in the early 90's for the 993 but they shelved it due to financial reasons, basically keeping the 964 interior. It does explain the "old tech" look and feel as it was dated by 5+ years in 1998.

    • @Tential1
      @Tential1 3 года назад

      It's as low as 25-30k usd, and was 20k usd. That's cheap for a car that you can sell back for the price you bought. Whatever you're driving now is probably more expensive once you factor in depreciation while a 996 is not depreciating anymore

    • @face2much
      @face2much 3 года назад

      @@Tential1 link ? I literally just checked cars.com and the cheapest turbo is 48k with 100k miles

    • @Tential1
      @Tential1 3 года назад +1

      @@face2much I meant all 996s. If you want a turbo, it's more expensive but they hold their value and you won't lose money on depreciation.
      I'm on bring a trailer though and seen many go for under 40k. In 2019, you could do below 30k if you tried hard.
      This is the worst time to do a 996. Prices are up 50%. Every RUclipsr did a video on how good the value was, and they shot up.
      It's not the sticker that's important, it's how much you can buy and sell the thing for. If you can buy it for 50k and sell it for 50k, did it really cost you anything other than interest? A used Porsche is cheaper than a lot of used cars that will depreciate to almost zero, while there will ALWAYS be a Porsche fan that wants a 911
