I have been told from the time I started looking at cars I know I had my first at 12 but obviously not on the road and I was working on it, my family told me if i need work done when I go to put they car on the road ask around and find a highly recommended local Guy, you may need a specialist but your local Guy will know one if you need it. I don’t trust dealer repairs anymore. Took my work van to a Chevy dealer once to get some stuff done. After I drove out of the service parking lot the van wouldn’t shift into 3rd gear. Turned around (drove like 500 feet), went into the office and they told me I have to schedule an appointment and pay $150 up front JUST for diagnostics. Long story short went to private mechanic apparently they disconnected a transmission sensor and acted like they didn’t know anything.

Also consider replacing the infamous IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing if this has not been done. M96 motors are prone to this bearing failing. This car is high mileage, so this should be done if it hasn't been already. Use compressed air to blow out the radiators. If you are going to track the car, consider a deep sump or Accusump to protect the motor. Also, if you are a serious track guy, consider a Motorsports AOS (air-oil separator). I personally use Castrol 5W-40 Edge in my street Porsches with very good luck. Stay away from that "other" oil if possible. Then go have fun and tear it up!

  • @schaefsky
    @schaefsky 4 года назад +2

I had a PPI done at a Porsche dealership here in Germany a few years ago. I think the hourly rate was actually cheaper, but still very much on the high end.
I am in no way a mechanic so I wanted to have a professional take a look at it. Also the asking price was quite an incestment for me, so I asked to go in the garage to have a look mysself. I knew I would not spot anything that wasn't glaringly obvious, but I also knew I would be angry at myself if I spent that much money and there was something obvious I could have seen.
When I came in, the mechanic was just about to lower the car from the stand again as he was just finished. I told him I would like to have a look myself, we went from front to back, he said something like the suspension parts look good and I just took his word for it, other then rattling at some things and probably look stupid I would not have known what to do anyway. He said the car was basicly fine for its age.
When we came to the back I noticed quite a bit of oil on one side of the engine. I asked "Where is the oil coming from?" to which he replied "What oil?" One side of the exhaust system was comletely covered in it, I thought the guy was joking. He was not, "Oh I missed that"... I mean finding out where it was actually coming from was probably more work than I paid for, but not noticing it at all, the guy did not even look. There were some other small issues with the car, but mostly I did not trust the dealerships oppinion after that so I did not buy the car.
Yes, I wanted to buy a used car from a private guy, and just went to the dealership for an inspection. Since I did not live there it was also clear I would not have any future work done there. But paying over 100€ for about 1 hour work that should not matter, for that price do a good job or do not offer the service in the first place.

Thanks for the great, educational video. I have noticed the same things with the local Porsche dealer. Those parts are quite often ”rare” and not in the warehouse right now and naturally have to be ordered outboard. Which was expensive. The situation suddenly changed when another company started offering Porsche parts and maintenance.

Most of us know the game... A regular Joe walks into a Service Dealer and wants an inspection on an older "new purchase". They see that you never been to their dealership and they want to make a lifelong customer. They give you a "Good Report" and you gladly agree to get your car up-to-date according to dealer specs. They clean it and hand you a PAID invoice with the Luxury dealerships Logo on it.You take your car home and you start noticing the same sounds, creeks etc.You take it back and they tell you that so and so needs to be replaced. You ask them why they didn't catch it the first time and they just give you that sad look .They will help you out on the price because you already spend thousands and they also give you a very nice rental car.
They start fixing it again and thats when you get a call that they found a critical issue that must be addressed urgently. They can't help you on the price because the parts are OEM and there is no wiggle room here. You don't mine too much because you will get to keep their expensive rental for "free" for awhile and the dealership, out of the goodness of their heart, will help out with the labor since the car is already on the rack.
You take the car home and notice other things, noises etc.
This is the game ladies and gents. They play it every single day.

MeesterDash First off...good for you! I tend to fall into that category of fix it yourself, too. Having grown up around car dealerships, and Porsche dealerships in particular, I am well familiar with the issues you and Hoovie describe. It was a big part of the reason why my Dad stopped being a Porsche mechanic in the 70s. So this problem is not new. Second, to give a bit of deference to the mechanics themselves, I think the problem is the dealership pricing scheme for repairs. The flat rate system screws the mechanic who can't let the vehicle go back to the customer with a problem not truly fixed, so he ends up giving away time for free on more complicated jobs. Meanwhile the dealership forces him to grossly overcharge for more routine work. On the whole I think dealerships and the new car dealership system is a dinosaur that will soon be extinct.

Thankful I have some great indy's around me, but shops that don't know what OEM stands for, or how to do a google search and read a forum have happily got me into what diy's I can handle. I'm a service advisor at a Honda dealer. When someone brings their car in for an inspection, I charge them 1 hour ($135), and I make sure the technician tells them EVERYTHING going on with the car. I do not let them do a half ass job on checking out the car. 1 hour diagnosis to basically do a multi-point inspection is gravy work, and I insist the techs be very thorough in their inspection. Most of the time, the tech's spend like 15 minutes on the car tops...The least they could do it be thorough.

    But good on you 👍
It's actually shocking that they didn't find the engine mounts and suspension faults, that's unforgivable. The airbag diagnosis charge seems reasonable now, given the module isn't communicating (so they might have actually plugged in to check codes and got the same result as the Car Wizard). I'm really surprised they didn't pick up that it's impossible to see out of the rear window because it's gone opaque with sun damage tbh - that's such an obvious thing staring them in the face that they should have noted down in a pre-purchase inspection.

This is what I like about independent mechanic shops. They usually don't charge you for an inspection. Takes him 5 minutes to scan the airbag meanwhile Porsche wants another 1.5hrs at $190/hour on top of the $190 they have already charged this man.
I had a similar experience at an Acura dealership. 45 minutes to scan the ECU for power steering faults for a warranty issue that they refused to cover... takes no more than 5 minutes to scan...

Agreed. I worked at a dealership like this so I've seen this kind of job from the inside. The pressure to turn out jobs in a day means you don't have the slack time to take a technician off other work you ARE getting paid to fix to just diagnose a list for a guy who is going to drive away to his normal garage, give them the diagnostic sheet from us and say "here's what's wrong, fix it for me".
That said, Tyler paid for diagnostic, and the technician report should have reflected the time spent on the car. Yes the profit per work hour is terrible, and I understand it'll drag the sold hours for the day down, but when it's someone this well known you would have thought they'd cover thier backs a bit better, despite knowing it's going to hurt thier day/week figures.

I used to work for a small used car dealership. When someone really liked a car but was on the fence about its condition, I'd always recommend they get a mechanic's shop they trusted to perform a Buyer's Inspection. It's no different than hiring a Home Inspector to help you identify issues before buying a house.
You hire them to find the problems on your behalf.

No, I go to the Dealership for recalls. That way if it fucks up (like in the case of my newly replaced Takata Airbags), I can SUE THE SHIT OUT OF THE STEALERSHIP & HONDA! If I had the work done somewhere else, (most likely) I wouldn't have a leg to stand on legally.
Those airbags have reportedly been exploding & sending pieces of shrapnel into the vehicle occupants when they go off. I don't trust the new ones any more than I do the ones they are replacing just due to the widespread failures.
Other examples are the unintended acceleration in Toyota Camrys, & "failure to go into park" with Jeep Cherokees. It's not that I don't trust the competence of local shops, but when it comes to safety issues. These Corporations will look for ANY WAY to get out of a Litigious Situation. Don't give them that opportunity.
